9월 22일에 페이스북에 써둔 글인데 일단 올려봅니다. 아무래도 키쿠치에 대한 정보가 꽤 잘못 알려진듯한 느낌이... 이변이 없는 한 키쿠치 유세이(菊池 雄星. 세이부)는 이번 시즌이 끝나고 메이저리그로 진출할 가능성이 높다. 키쿠치의 최대 무기는 역시 누가 뭐라고 해도 평균 구속 91.47마일(147.2Km)에 달하는 패스트볼이지만 메이저리그 좌완에게 평속 91마일은 빠르다고 하기 어렵다. 다들 최고 구속 158Km에만 주목하는데 알렉스 우드(다저스)의 평균 구속이 90.8마일이고 패트릭 코빈(애리조나)이 91.3마일이니 솔직히 키쿠치의 구속이 빠르다는 말은 못한다. 패트릭 코빈 보고 강속구 좌완이라고 하는 사람은 없다. 솔직히 최고 구속은 그릇이라고 하지만 실전에선 평균 구속이다. 최고 구속이 높을수록 좋긴 하지만 정작 실전에서 내내 최고 구속으로 던지는건 계투 요원이나 하는 거니까. 그리고 키쿠치는 선발로 쓰기 위해 데려가는거다. 오케이. 그럼 왜 메이저리그에선 키쿠치를 주목할까? 정답은 고속 슬라이더다. NPB 좌완 투수중 최고속 횡슬라이더를 던지는 키쿠치의 슬라이더는 평균 구속이 무려 137.8Km, 즉, 85.62마일에 달한다. 키쿠치 등판 경기에서 140Km를 넘는 슬라이더를 보는건 드문 일이 아니다.(게다가 키쿠치의 슬라이더는 슬라이더 평균 구속 TOP 20중 유일한 선발 투수의 슬라이더이기도 하다) 91.5마일의 패스트볼은 빠르다고 하기 어렵지만 85.6마일의 슬라이더는 무지막지하다. 실제로 이번 시즌 후반기 키쿠치는 슬라이더의 비중을 늘리면서 반등을 만들어냈고 실제로도 금년 슬라이더의 구종 가치는 커리어 최고를 기록중이다. 그것도 커터가 아닌 확실한 횡슬라이더의 궤적을 그려내면서 말이다. 의외로 최근 좌완 투수중 고속 패스트볼-고속 슬라이더의 조합을 찾기는 쉽지 않다. 키쿠치 스타일의 투수라면 현재로선 J.A 햅(양키스)과 마이크 마이너(텍사스)를 꼽을수 있다. 두 투수 모두 좌완으로서 키쿠치와 비슷한 스타일의 투구 패턴과 구속을 가지고 있다. 곁다리로 커브를 던지긴 하지만 오타니 쇼헤이(LA 에인절스)가 커브를 준 봉인 상태에 넣은 것처럼 키쿠치 역시 커브와 체인지업은 봉인할 가능성이 있다. 그러나 압도적 구속이라는 무기를 가진 오타니와 달리 키쿠치의 구속은 압도적이지 못하다. 마에다 켄타(LA 다저스)처럼 하이브리드한 유형의 투구를 하는건 아니라는 것. 햅과 마이너를 고려한다면 키쿠치를 두고 [메이저리그 3선발급 투구를 할 수 있다]라고 평하는건 분명 해볼만한 발언이지만 키쿠치의 진짜 쓰임새는 계투에 있을지도 모른다. 그러나 키쿠치는 2013년 이후 구원 등판이 컨디션 조절차 나온 단 2번 뿐이다. 천상 선발투수라는 것. 다만 실제로 메이저리그에서 키쿠치를 3선발로 기대하긴 무리가 있을 것이다. 어느 정도 제구도 되고 볼넷 비율도 낮은 햅과 마이너와 달리 키쿠치는 데뷔 이후 꾸준히 사사구와의 전쟁을 치른 투수다. 최근 2년이야 9이닝당 2.5개 이하로 떨어뜨리긴 했지만 NPB 시절 볼넷과 거리가 먼 투수였던 다르빗슈 유(컵스. 7시즌 통산 9이닝당 2.4개. 직전 3년 1.87개)와 달리 키쿠치는 그러한 제구와는 거리가 있는 투수다.(8시즌 통산 9이닝당 3.3개. 직전 3년 2.93개) 그러한 다르빗슈도 메이저리그에 입성한 후 9이닝당 볼넷이 3.4개로 늘어났다는것을 고려한다면 정교함이 떨어지는 키쿠치의 경우 4개에 육박할수 있다. 즉, 투구 밸런스의 이상을 일으킬수 있다는 이야기. 그러니까 박찬호 수준으로 볼넷과의 전쟁을 해야 한다는 이야기다. 그렇기 때문에 NPB의 성적과 투구 스타일을 고려한다면 실질적인 키쿠치의 기대치는 메이저리그 4~5선발, 개인적으론 금년 텍사스 시절의 콜 해멀스(컵스)나 텍사스 후반기의 데렉 홀랜드(샌프란시스코) 정도가 딱 기대치라고 본다. 그러나 워낙 오타니 열풍이 거셌기 때문에 키쿠치는 그 반사 이익을 얻을수 있을 것이다. 덧. 다만 키쿠치가 뛴 세이부의 홈구장 맷 라이프돔은 리그 최상급으로 타자에게 유리한 구장이고 키쿠치는 홈과 원정에서 큰 차이를 내지 않았다. 만일 펫코 파크나 AT&T 스타디움, 양키 스타디움 같은 구장에서 뛰게 될 경우 기대 이상의 성적을 보여줄 가능성이 은근히 높은 편. 그 점에 근거해 필자는 작년 오타니 쇼헤이를 놓친 샌디에고 파드레스가 이번 키쿠치 영입전 최전선에 설 거라고 생각한다.
