그리고 지금은 새벽 6시 25분. 술을 퍼 마시고 잠든 자의 생각으로는 그건 그리 현명한 판단이 아니었다. 잠깐 눈을 비비고 세수 좀 했을 뿐인데 6시 57분이라니. 눈도 채 다 못 뜨고 호텔 로비로 달려나갔다. 그래도 먹고 살겠다고 어제 사 둔 가츠샌드를 챙기는 걸 잊어버리지는 않았다. 편의점 샌드위치인데도 짭쪼름하고 맛있다. 이따가 또 사 먹어야지. 한 시간 정도 지났을까. 차에서 내릴 때가 되어서야 정신이 좀 돌아오는 것 같았다. 다른 사람들이 모일 때까지 기다리는데, 맙소사. 세상에. 저런. 동생과 내 눈이 바쁘게 움직였다. 아마도 스노클링샵 직원인듯한 남자들이었는데, 오키나와에서 몸 좋은 남자들은 전부 여기에 있는 것 같았다. 오키나와 역삼각형 클럽이라도 되나....역클? 너무 쳐다보면 실례니까 자제하려고 애썼지만 돌아가는 눈을 멈출 수는 없었다. 그리고 그건 우리뿐이 아니고, 건너편 테이블에 앉은 여자도 마찬가지인 것 같았다. 다른 한국인 일행이 20분이나 늦어서 한참 기다렸지만, 덕분에 지루하지는 않았다. 그리고 두꺼운 스윔수트가 의외로 예뻐서, 서로 사진을 찍어 주느라 정신이 없기도 했다.  ＃폼 잡으려고 가져온 선글라스를 용도에 맞게 사용했다! 폼을 잡는다! 신난다! 예쁘고 신기한 것도 잠깐이었다. 곧 땀이 줄줄 흐르기 시작했다. 안 그래도 더운 날씨에 구명 조끼에 뭐에 껴 입고 있으니 그럴만도 했다. 푸른 동굴로 향하는 배에서 잘 마른 오징어가 되어가고 있자니, 직원이 씩 웃으면서 말했다. "콜드 워터 오케이?" 일단 콜드라면 워터든 아니든 아무 상관이 없어 고개를 격렬하게 끄덕인 순간, 벌려진 목덜미 사이로 찬 물이 쏟아졌다. 아. 이래서 저쪽에서 꺅꺅 소리가 들렸구나. 나만 시원해질 수 없어 동생에게도 콜드 워터를 권했다. 역시 좋은 건 나눠야지. 서로 장난치다 보니 물에 들어가지도 않았는데 이미 흠뻑 젖었다. 그러니 바다에 들어가라는 이야기를 듣자마자 바로 뛰어들수밖에.  ＃물고기 무리가 먹이를 따라 몰려들고 있다 ＃뻔한 표현이지만 정말로 맑고 투명했던 바다  ＃바닥까지 보일 정도로 물이 맑다 바닷물은 놀랄만큼 맑았다. 위에서 아래를 보면 바닥까지 투명하게 보일 정도라니. 그보다 놀라운 건 스노클링 직원이었는데, 사실 물 밖에서 그 사람은 대단히 조용하고, 말도 잘 못 걸고, 수줍어하는 인상의 남자였다. 하지만 물로 들어가자 그런 태도는 거짓말이었던 것처럼 활기차지는 게 아닌가. 혹시 물고기라서 뭍에서는 조심스러워지는 건가? 아무런 장비도 없이 깊은 바다를 헤엄쳐 다니며, 거기서 사진까지 찍는 모습이 거의 기예처럼 보이기도 했다.  ＃나비고기는 생각보다 크다! 빵조각을 손에 꼭 쥐자 물고기들이 다가오기 시작한다. 무슨 새처럼 빵을 콕콕 쪼아 먹는데 어쩐지 간지럽다. 빵이 없으면 피라니아처럼 날 쪼아 먹으면 어떡하지 하는 쓸데없는 생각도 해 본다. 빵이 떨어질 때까지는 내가 이 구역 인기인이다. 바닷물은 햇빛에 적당히 데워져 딱 기분 좋은데다 경치까지 좋으니 바랄 게 없다. 수심이 깊은 곳에서는 다이빙을 하는 사람들이 사진을 찍고 있다. 이 다음엔 스노클링 말고 꼭 다이빙을 해 봐야지. 왠지 나도 바닥까지 내려가보고 싶다. 깊은 물 아래에서 물고기들을 올려다 보면 어떤 기분이 들까? 물고기에 정신을 너무 팔아서일까. 아니면 너무 움직여서 그런가. 물안경 사이로 물이 들어온다. 벗었다 다시 쓰려니 또 물이 막 들어온다. 쩔쩔매고 있었더니 멀리서 직원이 돌고래처럼 헤엄쳐 온다. 물안경을 다시 씌워주고 사라지는 뒷모습조차 돌고래 같다. 직원들은 발목에 무지개색 발찌를 저마다 하나씩 찼는데, 얼핏 보면 색색깔의 물고기들이 헤엄치는 것처럼 보인다. 꼬르륵. 한참 놀고 뭍으로 올라오니 위장이 움직이기 시작한다. 원래는 호텔에 갔다가 도로 나올 생각이었지만, 그럴 여유가 없다. 차에서 내리자마자 우리는 고기를 먹으러 간다. 그렇다. 어제 저녁에 스테이크를 먹고 열두시간이나 지났으니 다시 고기를 채워줘야 한다. 어제 저녁처럼 우린 맛집을 찾을 겨를이 없다. 심하게 배고프다. 그런데 은근히 국제거리는 점심에는 영업을 안 하는 가게들이 많아서, 한참 헤매다 눈에 띈 가게에 들어간다.  ＃스테이크 플래터 - 함박 스테이크, 치킨 스테이크, 감자튀김과 샐러드와 밥 불안하게 가게에 손님이 별로 없다. 그런데 가격은 꽤 저렴했다. 우리는 스테이크 플래터와 안심 스테이크 작은 접시 하나를 시키고는 음식을 기다렸다. 커다란 가게 안은 텅 비어있고, 맞은편 테이블에 오키나와 현지인처럼 보이는 여자가 스테이크에 맥주를 한잔 마시고 있다. 맥주로 목을 축이더니 꽤 자연스럽게 담배에 불을 붙인다. 아, 일본은 음식점에서도 담배 필 수 있는 가게가 많았지. 담배 연기가 좋을 이유는 없지만 못 보던 모습을 보니 그저 신기하기도 하다. 주인 아저씨가 우리 음식을 가져온다. 그런데, 서비스도 있다. 뭔가 애매해서 시키지 않았던 스테이크 라멘을 작은 접시로 두 그릇 놓아준다. 일본에서 드물다던 서비스다. 스테이크 라멘은 약간 느끼했지만 서비스라면 감사히 먹을만한 맛이다. 스테이크는 어제 먹은 집이 나았지만, 그래도 가격을 감안하면 이 집도 나쁘지는 않다. 고기를 다 먹고 나갈 때쯤 오키나와 현지인으로 보이는 학생들이 우루루 들어온다. 여기가 수업을 마치고 자주 모이는 집인가? 궁금하지만 일본어가 짧아 물어볼 수가 없다. 스노클링도 했고, 고기도 먹었으니 발 뻗고 쉴만도 하지만 아직 할일이 남아있다. 한국에서 사 온 수영복을 개시도 못해 보고 돌아갈 수는 없다. 수영복에 로브를 걸치고 호텔 수영장으로 나간다. 호캉스를 온 듯한 가족이 놀고 있다. 물은 시원하기는 커녕 미지근하다. 삼십분 정도 놀려고 애써 보았지만 영 기분이 살지 않는다. 수영장 말고 뭐 좋은 거 없나 보니 옆에 자쿠지가 있다. 그래, 뜨거운 물에 몸 담그는 게 최고지. 기포 위에서 이리 뒹굴 저리 뒹굴 게으름을 피운다. 수영은 딱 삼십분 하고 자쿠지에서 한시간 반쯤 게으름을 피우다 방으로 돌아간다. 호텔 해피 타임 전에 한숨 푹 자려고 했는데. 텔레비전에서 쿠션 파운데이션 광고를 한다. 일본 화장품 광고는 대단히 스케일이 크다. 스토리텔링이 장난이 아니다. 기미로 고민하던 40대 주부는 어느날 쿠션 파데를 만나게 되고, 거울을 보자마자 감격하며 소리친다. "제 인생이 바뀐 것 같아요!" 멀리서 진행자가 따스한 눈빛으로 지켜보며 고개를 끄덕이더니, 이제 준비된 스튜디오에게 주부의 친구들을 불러모은다. 친구들은 하나같이 영혼이 없는 목소리로 "예뻐-" "귀여워" "너무 변해서 깜짝 놀라고 말았어요(국어책 읽기)"를 외치기 시작한다. 주부와 진행자가 빛나는 얼굴로 쿠션 파데를 들어올린다. 정확히 해석은 못하겠지만 아무튼 저걸 사면 인생이 바뀐다 이런 말이려나? 무안단물?  ＃사실 이게 첫째날 사진인데 헷갈려서 잘못 올렸다 그리고 우린 또 먹는다. 어제 한잔 먹고 일어나기 아까웠던 샴페인을 마신다. 레드 와인도 한 잔 마셔보지만 어째 밍밍하니 별로다. 칵테일 코너에 비피터 진이 있길래 토닉워터와 라임과 레몬을 대충 섞는다. 대충 섞어 마시는 것 치고는 그럴듯한 맛이 나는 것 같지만 역시 기분 탓이려나. 클럽 라운지에서는 오리 로스와 치즈가 제일 먹을만 했는데, 뭐든지 음식이 좀 짠 오키나와답게 블루 치즈가 짜도 많이 짜다. 그래도 훌륭한 술이 있으니 얼마든지 먹을 수 있다. 느긋하게 쇼핑을 할 시간이다. 날이 덥고 습해서 곧 의욕이 꺾여 버렸지만. 돈키호테에 들어가자 의욕은 더더욱 바닥을 긴다. 무슨 사람이 이렇게 많아? 면세까지 받으려면 길고 긴 줄을 기다려야 한다. 원래 일본에 가면 이것저것 잔뜩 사 오려고 벼르고 있었는데, 인파를 뚫고 나갈 자신이 없다. 결국 속눈썹과 속눈썹풀 하나와 과자만 사서 나온다. 무더위에 지치고 쇼핑에 치인 마음을 달래는 건 역시 술이다. 술!  ＃낯선 수제맥주에게서 카스의 향기가 난ㄷ ㅏ...  ＃바다포도와 간장계속 스테이크만 먹어대긴 했지만 오키나와에 가면 꼭 먹어보고 싶은 식재료가 바다포도였다. 입 안에 넣으면 톡톡 터지겠지? 진짜 맛있겠지? 기대하며 바다포도를 입 안에 넣었다. 바다향이 입 안에 가득했다. 바다에서 한 일주일은 이리저리 떠밀린 해초를 헹구지 않고 먹는 맛이었다. 이거 왜 이래? 우린 계속 폼을 잡으며 어떻게든 먹으려 해 봤지만, 이건 사진을 찍고 한 입만 먹으면 솔직히 다 먹은 거다라는 의견에 동의했다. 동생의 말로는 한국에서 초고추장에 버무려준 걸 먹은 적이 있는데 그건 맛있었다고 한다.  ＃마르게리타 피자 바다포도로 버린 입맛을 살리기 위해 피자를 시켰다. 스몰 사이즈 팔백엔. 그러고보니 이 펍은 특이한 게, 주방이 엄청 컸다. 밖에서 안이 들여다 보이는 오픈형 주방이었는데 요리사 모자를 쓴 사람이 적어도 셋이었다. 아마도 백종원이 몹시 싫어할 법한 이 가게는, 메뉴가 거의 백 가지쯤 되었는데, 그걸 다 만들려면 저정도 주방은 있어야할 것 같았다. 배를 채운 우리는 이리저리 떠밀리며 걸었다. 습한 날씨 덕에 온몸이 끈끈했다. 그래도 아직 숙소로 돌아갈 때는 아니었다. 포켓몬 센터에 가야하니까. 류보 백화점 직원에게 '여기 포켓몬 센터가 어디요' 하고 물으니 뭔가 '아-'하는 얼굴로 싱글싱글 웃으며 방향을 알려줬다. 보아하니 이 백화점은 그리 살만한 브랜드가 많지 않아서(라뒤레 꽃잎 블러셔가 사고 싶었지만 라뒤레가 입점되어 있지 않았다) 어째 백화점에 오는 사람보다 포켓몬센터에 오는 사람이 더 많을듯 싶었다.  ＃동생이 산 '피카츄의 옷장' 피카츄. 옷은 별매로 여러 종류가 구비되어 있다  ＃왠지 나도 질러야할 것 같아서 지른 오키나와 한정 피카츄 매장은 생각보다 작았는데, 동생의 말에 따르면 알차게 구하기 힘든 아이템들이 들어차 있다고 했다. 한국에서는 피카츄 파란 잠옷을 구하기 어렵다나. 가격도 비싸고 크기도 커서 사지 않았는데, 왠지 두고두고 후회가 됐다. 생각보다 예쁘잖아. 여자 둘이 밤늦도록 술을 마실 수 있는 곳은 어딜까 고민하던 우리는, 무난하게 묵는 호텔 바로 가기로 했다. 호텔 바니까 예쁘게 차려입고 가야할 것만 같은 느낌이 들어서, 방으로 돌아가 거울을 보고는 그저 화장만 조금 고치고 나오는 걸로 만족하기로 했다. 일본 음식은 듣던 대로 상당히 짰는데, 거기다 원래 다이어트를 하고 있어서인지 얼굴이 무슨 공처럼 동그래졌다. 다시 한 일주일 정도 깨끗하게 식이하면 돌아가겠지. 돌아갈 때가 되니까 슬슬 체중계가 두려워졌다. 분명 인바디 재자고 할 텐데. 안 재면 안되겠지? 엉엉엉.  ＃하얏트 나하 호텔 바에서 본 야경  ＃올드 패션드 동생과 호텔 바에 앉아 있자니 괜히 기분이 좋았다. 괜스레 동생과 처음 갔던 여행, 아니 출장이 떠오르기도 했다. 나도 사회에서 만난 사람과 이렇게까지 가까워질 줄 몰랐어. 그건 늘 하던 이야기였다. 동생과 갔던 출장은 아주 즐거웠다. 뭐랄까. 세상에, 이렇게 말이 잘 통하는 사람이 있다니. 그런 기분이었다. 손발이 착착 맞으니 일은 언제나 누구보다 빠르게 해치울 수 있었고 나머지 시간에는 술을 마셨는데. 세상에, 술 취향도 술 매너도 너무 내 타입이었다. 그렇게 업무를 빙자해서 자꾸 만나다 보니 결국 여기까지 와 버렸다. 밤늦도록 무슨 이야기를 했더라. 아마 나는 조금 위로받고 싶었을 것이다. 솔직히 말하자면 이제 무언가 잘 될거라는 생각은 별로 들지 않는다. 잘 견뎌야지. 잘 버텨야지. 작년부터 지금까지 그런 생각을 해 왔다. 근데 의외로 그러다 보니 잘 버텨진 것 같기도 하다. 어떤 일이 생기건 간에 놓지 않고 있으면 그냥 흘러간다. 가끔 정말 엉망진창인 때가 오기야 오지만, 지나가겠지. 그렇지 뭐. 동생과 술잔을 비우고 일어났다. 동생이 씩 웃는다.
