중, 고등학교 때부터 보드까페를 가고 보드게임에 흥미를 느끼기는 했지만 진지하게 보드게임을 수집하면서 깊이 있게 빠지지는 않았습니다. 뭐 그 당시 학생 때에는 컴퓨터 게임이 더 접근성이 좋기도 하고... 그러던 제가 보드게임에 제대로 입문하기 시작한 것은 군대에서부터 였습니다. 당시 저희 부대는 싸지방이 좁고 일병~상병초의 동기들은 제대로 할 수 있는 게임이 별로 없었기 때문에...2개월 동기제를 시행하던 덕분에 동기가 꽤 많았는데 그 때 동기들끼리 휴가 나갔다 오면서 보드게임을 사서 들어오자는 이야기가 나왔죠. 다른 동기들이 그때 당시에도 유명했던 카탄, 시타델, 루미큐브 등등을 들고 왔을 때, 저는 뭔가 더 깊이 있고 재미있는 보드게임을 찾고 있었습니다. 그리고 휴가를 나온 제 눈에 띄었던 것이 바로 아그리콜라 구판 (2007) 이었습니다. 그리고 부대 복귀 후 그 게임을 펼치는 순간... 정신을 차려보니 벌써 2018년이 되었군요. 1. 아그리콜라 소개 아그리콜라는 독일의 보드게임 디자이너 "우베 로젠버그"의 작품입니다. 우베 로젠버그의 전작은 "보난자" 로, 흔히 "유로 보드게임" 이라고 부르는 묵직한 유럽형 보드게임이 아니었는데, 아그리콜라의 발표와 함께 유럽형 보드게임에 센세이션을 불러일으킵니다. 당시 보드게임 긱 순위에서 오랜 시간 동안 1위를 지켰던 푸에르토 리코를 밀어내는 데 성공했죠. 2009년에는 확장팩인 "아그리콜라 : 새로운 도전"이 나왔고 그 외에도 다양한 추가 카드팩들이 출시되었습니다. 그리고 2016년에는 그간의 구판을 개정하여 일부 룰을 변경하고 카드를 삭제하며 새 카드를 추가한 개정판이 출시되었습니다. 아그리콜라 (2007) ( https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/31260/agricola ) 현재 보드게임 긱 순위 17위 ; wieght 3.63/5 아그리콜라 : 새로운 도전 (2009) ( https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgameexpansion/43018/agricola-farmers-moor ) weight 3.54/5 아그리콜라 개정판 (2016) ( https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/200680/agricola-revised-edition ) 현재 보드게임 긱 순위 133위 ; weight 3.38/5 (이 밖에도 2인용 버전인 "크고 작은 피조물들", 난이도를 낮추고 어린 연령층을 위해 나완 간략화 버전인 "아그리콜라 패밀리", 여러 카드팩 애드온 등이 있지만 생략하겠습니다.) 아그리콜라의 난이도는 "쓰루 디 에이지스 : 문명의 새 이야기" 에 비하면 나은 수준이지만 상당히 묵직합니다. 이는 "먹여살리기" 라는 시스템 때문인데, 모든 플레이어는 농작물을 수확하고 동물이 번식할 때마다 자신의 가족 구성원들 수에 비례하는 음식을 장만하여야 합니다. 이 주기적인 "먹여살리기" 를 위해 플레이어들은 각자 음식을 장만할 방법을 강구해야 하고, 혹시 내가 생각했던 방안을 다른 사람들이 선점해버리면 엄청난 타격을 입을 수도 있습니다. 반대로 타인의 점수를 갉아먹기 위해서 동물 키울 공간도 없는데 일단 다 모조리 고기로 도축해버리는 플레이도 가능합니다. (물론 게임 끝나고 난 뒤 체어샷이 날아올 수도 있습니다.) * 뒤이어 나올 후기에서 구판에만 적용되는 설명은 A., 개장판에만 적용되는 설명은 B.로 구분하겠습니다. 2. 개봉하면서 아그리콜라의 경우 카탄 급은 아니지만 어마어마한 인기를 구가하는 베스트셀러로, 코리아보드게임즈 ( http://koreaboardgames.com )에서 한글화하여 판매하고 있습니다. 유통은 거의 왠만한 온라인 보드게임 쇼핑몰 뿐 아니라 오프라인 대형 서점에서도 진행하고 있으므로 따로 주소를 올리지는 않겠습니다. 현재 아그리콜라 구판 확장팩은 품절 상태이고 신판 확장팩은 원 제작사인 독일 Lookout Games에서 올해 안에 발매하려고 하고 있습니다. A. 아그리콜라 구판의 개봉은 군대 생활관에서 진행했기 때문에 추억보정/군대보정이 더 많이 들어갈 수도 있습니다. 일단 구판의 개봉했을 때의 충격은 어마어마했습니다. * 최대 5인용이 가능한 색깔 별 나무 마커 * 네 가지 자원 (나무, 흙, 갈대, 돌)과 두 가지 농작물 (곡식, 채소), 세 가지 동물들 (양, 돼지, 소) * 추가로 하드보드지로 된 음식 자원과 대량 표시 마커 * 주요설비/보조설비/직업 포함 350장이 넘는 카드들 단점이라면 구판의 플레이어 나무 마커는 미플이 아니라 원형 나무 마커라는 점, 그리고 자원 토큰과 농작물 토큰 또한 개정판과 달리 원형 나무 토큰이기 때문에 눈으로 보면 조금 심심할 수 있다는 점입니다. 그런데 동물은 또 동물모양이 살아 있어서 너무 대비되기도 하고...따라서 구판의 부품은 조금 아쉬움이 있습니다. (구판) 부품 : 4/5 B. 반면에 아그리콜라 개정판은 기존의 5인이던 최대 플레이어 수가 4인으로 바뀌었습니다. 대신 그에 맞추어 부품의 수는 조금 줄어들었습니다. * 최대 4인용이 가능한 색깔 별 나무 마커, 기존 구판에 비해 플레이어별 색깔이 보다 밝게 바뀌었으며 가족 마커 또한 미플로 변경 * 네 가지 자원 (나무, 흙, 갈대, 돌)과 두 가지 농작물 (곡식, 채소) 또한 실재 자원 모양으로 변경 * 직업과 보조설비의 리워크 및 삭제, 추가를 통하여 밸런스를 맞추려고 시도. 단, 개정판 원본에 들어있는 카드 수는 크게 감소 아그리콜라 개정판은 구판에 비해 매니아들의 호불호가 갈리는 편인데, 그 중 가장 크게 갈리는 부분이 바로 보조설비와 직업 카드의 변경입니다. 구판에서 밸런스 상 문제가 되어 대회 및 플레이에서 금지가 되는 카드들이 삭제되거나 리워크 되었고, 가족 먹여살리기 단계의 빡빡함을 조금 완화하기 위해 음식을 쉽게 확보할 수 있는 보조설비들이 조금 늘어났습니다. 그리고 구판의 방대한 카드 수가 크게 감소하였습니다. ㄱ. 구판의 빡빡함과 높은 볼륨을 좋아하는 사람들은 구판을 선호합니다. ㄴ. 구판의 직업/보조설비가 밸런스가 맞지 않고 전반적으로 난잡하다고 느꼈던 사람들은 신판을 선호합니다. 컴포넌트 디자인은 신판이 구판보다 크게 개선되었습니다. 단 카드의 글씨체는 눈에 잘 안 들어오는 편입니다. 저도 카드 디자인은 그냥 구판 그대로 갔으면 어땠을까 하는 아쉬움이 있습니다. 거기다 구판에 비해 보조설비와 직업 카드의 배경 색감 차이가 줄었습니다. 익숙하지 않은 분들은 헷갈리기도 하시더라고요. 자원 및 농작물의 디자인은 카베르나와 거의 동일합니다. 전반적으로 플레이하면서 더 많은 매력을 느낄 수 있었습니다. (개정판) 부품 : 5/5 3. 튜토리얼 플레이 아그리콜라는 여러 형태의 플레이 스타일을 지원하는데, 초보자에게 적합한 가족 플레이가 있습니다. 가족 플레이는 직업이나 보조설비를 생략할 수 있고, 여러 플레이어들이 경쟁하는 것이 아니라 공통의 가족을 갖고 운영할 수 있습니다. 또한 아그리콜라는 1인 플레이가 지원이 되기 때문에 입문하는 것에 대해 인원적인 제한은 없었습니다. A. 아그리콜라 입문의 최대 장벽은 바로 가족 먹여살리기를 준비하는 것이었습니다. 가족을 먹여살리기 위한 음식 자원은 직접 행동을 통해서도 가져올 수 있지만, 이 행동을 하기 위한 기회비용이 게임이 진행될 수록 급격하게 높아집니다. 따라서 플레이어들은 게임이 진행되는 과정에서 어느 순간부터는 다른 방식으로 음식을 마련해야 합니다. 그런데 안타깝게도 이 부분에 대해서는 많은 플레이 경험이 필요했습니다. 또한 점수를 계산하는 방법은 쉽게 접할 수 있지만, 튜토리얼 플레이 이후 직업 및 보조설비를 활용하는 부분에 있어서는 보다 많은 시행착오가 필요했습니다. 실재로 게임을 해보지 않고서는 어느 직업이나 보조설비가 좋은지 알기 힘들고, 또 같은 직업 및 보조설비라 하더라도 1인 플레이와 2인, 3~4인 플레이시 선호되는 직업, 보조설비가 다르기 때문이죠. 전반적으로 텍스트 설명이 많고 2007년 초판 발매 게임이다 보니 비언어적인 기호가 많지 않아 설명서를 자주 찾게 됩니다. (구판) 직관성 : 3/5 B. 아그리콜라 개정판에서는 가족 먹여살리기 단계에 대한 유저들의 애로사항을 수렴했는지, 자잘하게 음식을 확보할 수 있는 기능의 보조설비들이 추가되었습니다. 또한 구판에 비해 디자인이 좀더 직관적이고 비언어적인 기호를 활용하도록 바뀌었고, 직업/보조설비의 텍스트 문구도 간략하게 변했습니다. 5인에서 4인으로 최대 플레이 가능 인원이 줄어든 대신 전반적으로 군더더기가 줄었다는 인상을 받았습니다. 하지만 지나치게 텍스트를 간소화하다 보니, 일부 카드들은 추가적인 설명이 없으면 에러플레이를 하기 쉽상이더라고요. 애드온에 대한 지원에 대해서도 변동이 있었습니다. 구판의 경우 주요 설비/보조 설비/직업 카드는 카드 뒷면에 한글로 그 카드의 유형에 대해 적혀 있었습니다. 그러다보니 추가 카드 팩이 한글화발매가 안 되는 경우 소비자가가 손으로 개인 한글화를 해야만 본판과 연동하여 사용해야 했습니다. 하지만 개정판에서는 각 카드 뒷면에 그림만 있고 아무런 텍스트가 없었습니다. 추후 발매할 애드온 카드에도 텍스트가 없을 경우 연동 사용이 용이할 것 같습니다. (개정판) 직관성 : 4/5 4. 플레이를 하면서 아그리콜라를 처음 접한 뒤 해보면서 느끼는 가장 놀라운 점은 시스템의 완성도입니다. 가족 먹여살리기의 빡빡함 까지 포함해서 "내가 정말로 중세에 화학비료도 없이 농사 짓던 농노 가족이 되었구나" 싶은 정도의 테마 재현성을 보여줍니다. 물론 직업과 보조설비가 잘 터지면 그런거 없고 고 정주영 회장 처럼 소떼를 몰고 다닐 수도 있습니다. 하지만 2인에서야 가능한 것이고 3인 이상의 플레이에서는 점수칸 빡빡하게 채워가며 고득점 하는 것은 무리입니다. (구판) 테마 : 5/5 (개정판) 테마 : 5/5 아그리콜라의 충실한 컴포넌트는, 게임이 끝난 뒤 온갖 역경을 이겨내고 가족을 크게 발전시켰다는 심리적인 만족감 외에도 시각적인 성취감을 느끼게 해줍니다. 가족이 살고있는 집의 방이 늘어나거나 집을 튼튼하게 개량하고, 밭을 일구어 농작물을 심고 울타리와 외양간을 건설하여 동물을 기르는 일련의 과정들이 눈 앞의 개인보드 위에서 펼쳐집니다. 컴포넌트를 개인적으로 업그레이드 하는 보드게임 매니아들이 많은데, 아그리콜라는 손대지 않아도 좋다는 의견들도 종종 보일 정도입니다. (구판) 성취감 : 5/5 (개정판) 성취감 : 5/5 A. 마지막으로 이 게임을 오랫동안 붙잡을 수 있는 또 하나의 이유는 바로 다양한 보조설비와 직업카드가 아닐까 합니다. 여러가지 기능이 있는 직업 카드와 보조설비를 활용하여 1인 플레이의 고득점 기록 갱신을 할 수도 있고, 플레이어들끼리 다인 플레이를 할 때에도 같은 양상이 반복되지 않게 해줍니다. 플레이어들끼리 진행할 때에도 '7 Select', '10-3 Select', 'Draft' 등 다양한 룰로 게임을 접근할 수 있어 체험할 수 있는 볼륨감은 배가 됩니다. (구판) 볼륨 : 5/5 B. 하지만 안타깝게도 원본만으로 방대한 카드팩을 지원해주는 구판과는 달리, 개정판의 카드팩은 그 양이 너무 부실합니다. 자질구래한, 손에 들어도 별로 활용도가 낮은 카드들을 정리하고 금지 카드 분류되는 오버 밸런스 카드들을 너프하다 보니 오히려 카드가 고만고만 해지는 결과를 낳고 말았습니다. 특히 직업의 경우 1+ 카드들의 수가 구판에 비해 확 줄어들다 보니 2인 플레이를 하다 보면 어느 순간 같은 장면이 반복되는 느낌이 들기도 합니다. 현재 해외 발매된 영문 카드들을 확인해보고 있는데 만약 한글판과 호환이 가능하다면 필히 구매해야 할 것 같습니다. (구판) 디자인 : 5/5 B. 다만 개장판의 시각디자인이 조금 아쉬웠는데, 직업과 보조설비의 색감 차이가 적어져 눈에 확 띄지 않는 점 뿐만 아니라 차후 나올 타 언어팩과의 호환을 위해 카드 뒷면의 설명 글자가 없어졌다는 점, 그리고 자원 기호가 비 직관적이어서 눈에 확 들어오지 않는다는 점은 게임 플레이를 할 때 몰입을 방해하는 요소가 되기도 합니다. 카드 선택의 폭이 좁아지고 플레이 스타일이 보다 단순하게 변했다는 점, 개장판이나 추가 팩이 나왔을 때 구판/원본 보다 더 높은 평가를 받는 다른 보드게임들과는 달리 개장판의 호불호가 크다는 점도 완성도 면에서 조금 아쉬웠습니다. (개정판) 디자인 : 4/5 6. 총점 : (구판, 개장판 모두) 9/10 구판을 구매하고 확장을 사지 못했다가, 확장 지원이 끊키고 앞으로는 개장판만 지원한다는 소식 때문에 개장판까지 구매해버렸지만, 개인적으로는 구판, 개장판 모두 구매한 것에 대해 높은 만족도를 느낄 수 있었습니다. 사실 이전에 소개한 비티컬쳐나 쓰루 디 에이지스 개정판에 비해, 정말로 다른 사람들에게 무난하게 추천할 수 있는 보드게임은 오히려 아그리콜라가 아닐까 생각하게 됩니다. 또 아그리콜라의 추천 연령이 +12/+14 정도로 표기되는데, 어린 자녀가 있으신 분들은 +8 연령의 아그리콜라 패밀리를 가족들이 함께 플레이하기도 하시더라고요. 이런 저런 제품들의 인기가 모두 높다는 점이 아그리콜라 시리즈의 매력을 증명해주기도 합니다. 아그리콜라 원본은 ios에서 지원하는 것으로 알고 있습니다. 안타깝게도 안드로이드에서는 2인용 버전인 "아그리콜라 : 크고 작은 피조물들"만 지원하고 있더라고요 ㅠㅠ 보드게임에 흥미가 있으신 분들은 꼭 한 번 플레이 해 봐야 하는 게임, 아그리콜라에 대한 감상이었습니다.
