http://comic.naver.com/webtoon/detail.nhn?titleId=660025&no=1 송곳이 드디어 긴 휴재를 마치고 연재를 재개했습니다. 본 글의 내용은 송곳과는 관련이 전혀 없습니다. 다만 제가 참 좋아하는 웹툰의 소식이라 아직 모르시는 분들을 위해 링크를 겁니다. ------------------------------------------------------------- 이 글은 제가 쓰는 글 중에 드물게도 '완성'하지 않은 글입니다. 완성이 작문의 기술적인 부분이나 글의 완성도를 말씀드리는 것이 아니라, 제가 이 글의 주제에 있어서 '입장'이 명확하지 않음에 대해 완성되지 않았다고 미리 말씀드리고자 합니다. 낮에 아르바이트를 하면서 유머게시판의 택배기사님들을 생각하시는 많은 분들의 댓글을 읽었습니다. 참 좋았습니다. 많은 사람들이 택배기사님들의 과도한 노동강도나 현실속에서 부딪히는 부조리에 분노해 주셨습니다. 이런 모습은 정말 흔하게 볼 수 있는 광경입니다. 저는 현실에서나 인터넷에서나 어떤 '약자'를 두고, 맹렬하게 비난하고 차별하는 곳은 일베정도밖에 본 적이 없습니다. 그런 일베들도 현실에서는 쉽게 그런 말을 꺼내지 못합니다. 사람들은 '비정규직'에 대해 대체로 안타까워 하고, '택배기사'의 노동에 대해 안타까워 하고, '성차별'에 대해 안타까워하고, '비리'에 대해 분노하고, '권력형 범죄' 에 대해 또 분노하고, '변하지 않는' 사회에 분노합니다. '보통'의 사람들이란, 참 착하다고 생각합니다. 그런데 제가 한 가지 꺼끌꺼끌하게 느껴지는 것은, 우리는 '좋아요'를 누르고 '안타까워요 ㅠㅠ' 를 타이핑하는 감수성을 지니고 있는데, 왜 당사자들은 점점 더 가혹해지거나 혹은 전혀 변하지 않는 상황에 있어야 하는지가 궁금합니다. 그렇지 않나요? 저는 거의 7년이 넘게 인터넷 쇼핑을 이용합니다만, 배송료가 왜 2500원에 고정되는지 잘 이해가 되지 않습니다. 제가 알기로 인터넷 쇼핑이 활성화 된 후 전국의 물류-택배 산업규모가 꽤 불어난 것으로 알고 있습니다. 그리고 많은 사람들이 이렇게 적은 배송료는 '규모의 경제' 덕분이야, '시장'이 커졌으니 가능하지. '박리다매'의 원리야 같은 말로 이해하는 듯 합니다. 제가 해외를 자주 다녀본 것은 아니지만, 우리나라 사회교육에 놀라움을 느낄때는 이럴 때입니다. 굳이 대학을 나오지 않은 사람도 수요공급과 규모와경제와 시장의 알고리즘을 쉽게 이야기 할 수 있고, 그러한것들이 하나의 상식으로서 잘 작동하는 사회. 정말 대단하다고 느낍니다. 하지만 제 궁금증은 여기서 마무리 되지는 않았습니다. 택배기사는 소서리스가 아니니까요. 숙련된 노동자들이 생산효율을 높이는 것은 자명하지만 그게 곧 인간을 초월하는 단계로 나아가지는 않습니다. 아무리 숙달되도 텔레포트는 불가능하다는거죠. 택배기사가 아무리 숙달된 노동력을 제공한다 하더라도 하루의 물량부담은 명확하게 정해져 있습니다. 오히려 많은 물량은 개당 단가를 낮춰주었고, 노동량이 늘어나도 수입은 고정되거나 떨어지는 모순이 벌어집니다. 그러나 시장의 소비자인 우리들은 그게 꽤 합리적인 시장의 효율성 달성이라고 생각합니다. 어쨌거나, 택배기사에게는 일감이 늘어났고 다만 모종의 혁신을 통해 그분들이 '이윤율'을 늘려야 하는 부분이라고 믿는거죠. 지난 7년동안 가장 가격이 오르지 않은 상품을 생각해보니 삼각김밥이 떠오릅니다. 그땐 700원이었던거 같은데 요샌 900원 이더라고요. 그런데 이것도 '혼자 밥먹는 인구'가 늘어나고 '편의점 식품 소비'가 늘어났으며, '편의점'자체가 엄청나게 늘어났는데도 거의 30%가까이 가격이 인상된 셈입니다. 단순 가격 비교를 할 수는 없지만 원자재의 가격상승 따위를 생각하더라도 쌀값과 유가를 대충 퉁친다면 현재의 '배송료'는 여전히 이해하기 어려운 수준으로 쌉니다. 심지어 정말 많은 쇼핑몰이 '배송료'를 무료로 제공하기도 하고요. 주류경제학이 상정하듯이, 우리의 기호. 즉 우리가 가진 감수성이 만들어내는 '택배기사님들은 일도 힘든데 가격이 싸서 돈도 많이 못버는게 참 안됐다' 라는 공통된 기호가 정말 작동하고 있었다면, 택배비가 오르지 않을 이유는 없을 것입니다. 왜냐면, 택배비가 낮다는게 모두에게 공통된 인식으로서 기능한다면 판매자들은 택배비를 낮추거나 없애려고 할 필요가 많이 줄어들테니까요. 그러나 우리는 택배기사님 ㅠㅠ 하면서도 배송료 무료와 배송료 할인쿠폰을 찾습니다. 그리고 배송료를 아까워 하는 사람들도 많죠. 그들의 서비스는 우리가 아니라 누군가가 지출해야 할 (이를테면 판매자가) 거라고 믿습니다. 저는 택배회사와 판매자간의 계약의 구체적인 부분은 잘 모릅니다. 다만 아마 택배서비스를 이용하는 판매점들도 '배송료'를 본인들이 그대로 부담하고 싶지는 않을겁니다. '기업'이잖아요. 기업은 개인보다 훨씬 더 철저하게 이윤을 추구하는데 순순히 택배서비스에 모든 금전적 부담을 질려고 하지는 않을 것 같습니다. 기업이 정말 그런걸 다 책임지는게 일반적이라면 '남양유업'사태 같은건 있지도 않았겠죠. 저는 택배기사들(일반 노동자로도 인정받지못하고 이상한 자영업 사업자로 계약된)이 소비자와 생산자 사이에서 낑긴 직업중 하나라고 생각합니다. 그리고 이 '낑긴'구조는 우리에게 한 가지 헛점을 만들어내죠. '누구도 잘못한 건 없지만 비극은 끊임없이 재생산 됩니다.' 많은 사람들, 저를 포함한 정말 많은 사람들은 대체로 선합니다. 선하게 반응하고, 선한것에 기뻐하고, 선한 입장에 서고자 합니다. 그러나 저는 제가 옳은 것을 실행하는 것인지, '옳은 입장에 있는 나'를 연기하는 것인지에 대해서는 자신이 없습니다. 우리는 거의 모두가 어떤것이 잘못되었음을, 어떤것이 부조리함을, 크게는 '우리가 누군가의 착취를 통해 편안함을 누리는지를' 알면서도 외면하고 있다는 것을 압니다. 대한민국은 지구 단위에서 보았을때 훌륭한 제 3세계의 착취국중 하나니까요. 하지만 우리는 어떤 시점부터는 그것들이 '어쩔 수 없는' 것이라고 믿습니다. 그리고 동시에 그 '어쩔 수 없는' 것이 '내 이익을 손대지 않는' 시점에서 '어쩔 수 있느냐 없느냐'로 결정된다는 것을 깊숙히, 깊숙이 묻어버립니다. 택배기사의 가격 갈등은 단순히 한 가지의 사례입니다. 또 한가지 떠오르는 것은 한 의경출신의 페이스북 댓글이었습니다. '저는 시위를 반대하지 않습니다. 그러나 방패를 들고 나가서 보면, 분명 순수하지 않은 목적의 시위꾼들이 공격적으로 도발하고 싸움을 일으킵니다. 그런 사람들이 문제라는거죠.' 저는 이 댓글이 맞다고 생각합니다. 시위 현장의 어딘가에는 분명 그런 과격한 이들이 존재합니다. 그러나 이 사실이 만들어내는 의미는 틀렸다고 생각합니다. 시위 현장에서 공격적으로 도발하고 싸움을 만들어내는 사람들의 잘못이 사라지는게 '순수'함을 담보하지는 않습니다. 정확히 말하자면, 민주주의는 '순수'랑은 아주 거리가 먼 체제라고 생각합니다. 민주주의는 정말 흙탕물은 깨끗하다고 할 만큼 온갖것이 뒤섞인 사회를 받아들이자는 각오에 가깝습니다. 민주주의의 축을 움직이는 세 가지는 '의회, 법, 시민'이라고 생각하는 입장에서, 이 세가지는 언제나 끊임없이 갈등하고 끊임없이 순수를 포기합니다. '순수한'정치같은게 세상에 있을리가 없지 않습니까. 그러나 사람들은 그 문장에서 '순수함'이 곧 어떠한 기제로서 '옳음'을 담보한다고 믿습니다. 그러나 '순수함'은 '옳음'을 핑계삼기 위한 단어에 불과합니다. 그래서 우리는 무언가의 갈등을 봉쇄할 때에 그 갈등의 '잡음'을 공격합니다. 그리고 이는 매우 강력하게 동작합니다. 왜냐하면, 우리는 모두 자신의 세계 바깥의 것들에 어느정도는 무지하기 때문에 내가 아닌 타인의 세계에서 벌어지는 가치갈등, 그곳에서 작동하는 이데올로기를 정확히 판단할 수 없기 때문입니다. 그래서 많은 사람들은 손쉽게 순수해지라고 말합니다. 그것이 마치 실재하는 것처럼. 저는 '순수한 갈등'같은건 박정희가 독재를 할 때에나 있었다고 생각합니다. 혹은 히틀러가 독일인들을 고무시킬때에나 있었겠죠. 위 두 사례는 각각 경제와 정치적 측면에서 제가, 혹은 누군가가 의견을 결정하는 기제에 대해 이야기 한 것입니다. 우리는 무언가를 옹호하고 반대하기 위한 근거를 찾습니다. 그리고 그것이 나를 선한 입장에 세워준다면 더할나위 없습니다. 그러나 그것이 나의 이익에 침해를 일으킨다면 '말' 이상의 것을 행동하기에는 매우 어렵습니다. 이런 글을 쓰는 저 역시 그렇습니다. 저는 그래서 이익의 이데올로기에 세뇌된 저 자신이 때때로 무섭습니다. 모든것을 '이익'과 '손해'로 따져보는 판단력이 30년 가까운 사회화를 통해 길러졌다면 나는 이 이익의 관점을 벗어날 수 있을까에 대해 자신이 없기 때문입니다. 그러나 이런 이익과 손해를 따지는 과정은 너무나 강력해서 내가 찾는 근거가 나를 옹호하도록 하게 하는 자력까지 발휘하는 것 같습니다. 저는 마르크스가 자본에서 이야기 한 '물신숭배'의 개념을 매우 감명깊게 읽었습니다. 그러나 저는 여전히 제가 지불한 가격이 그 이면에 있는 모든것을 담보한다는 매혹적인 말을 적극적으로 거부하는 행동을 하지는 않습니다. '이해'란, 그래서 '합리적인' 것이란 너무나 강력하고 '너무나' 옳게 사회화 된 개념입니다. 그리고 위에서 말했듯 이렇게 누구도 나쁜짓을 하지 않았는데, 비극은 재생산되어 갑니다. 최근에 저는 구조와 제도가 뭔가를 기적적으로 바꿔주리라는 생각을 많이 버렸습니다. 사람들은 착하지만, 정말 똑똑하고 그래서 아마 자신의 이해관계를 최대한 보호하는 과정 속에서 선한 입장을 견지하려하는 사람들이 곧 대중의 대부분을 차지할거라 생각합니다. 그러니 변화하는 구조와 제도 역시 끊임없이 공격받고, 또 언제나 명확한 한계속에서 나아가거나 퇴보할거라 생각합니다. 그러나 우리의 변화에 대한 '실망'은 그보다 훨씬 빠르고, 우리는 속 시원하게 부조리들이 사라지지않는(특히 우리와 직접적인 상관이 없는 부분들이)모습에서 쉽게 염증을 느낄거라고 예상합니다. 저 역시 그렇고요. 하지만 변화에 모순이 있다는 것이 곧 변화를 위한 동력이 될 가능성이 있음도 인정합니다. 다만 그 가능성의 주체가 단순히 구조나 제도가 아닌, 개인이 갖는 감수성과 행동간의 관계에 있다는 생각이 자주 듭니다. 저는 여전히 이 사회속에서 힘들어하는 온갖 신분들, 계급으로 통일하기 어려울 만큼 많은 신분들이 각자의 자리에서 부조리에 노출되어 있다고 생각합니다. 그리고 아마 정말 많은 사람들이 그 부조리에 대해 동정적이고, 변해야 한다는 시선으로 바라봐 준다고 생각합니다. 저는 생각보다 더 급진적으로 성소수자의 권리를 외치기도 했고, 동물 보호와 원전반대, 환경보호, 성평등, 청소년 인권 등을 함께 주장해 준 많은 대중이 있음을 기억합니다. 그러나 그만큼, 우리는 '좋아요'로 덜어낸 죄책감과 부채감 덕택인지 전혀 변하지 않는 많은 부조리 역시 기억할 것입니다. 일일히 언급하기도 힘든 착취의 현장들이 하나하나 '우리 스스로'의 합리적인 의사판단에 의해 정당화 되어가는 모습을. 그것을 지배하는 이데올로기가 대체 무엇인지 구체화 시키기도 어려울 만큼, 단순히 신자유주의나 자본주의모순이라고 뭉뚱그리기에는 어떤 사람도 '악의적'이기보다는 그렇지 않은 구성원들이 왜 사회를 자꾸 '어쩔 수 없는' 것으로 규정하고 체념해 가는지를. 변화만큼이나, 변화하지 않으려 하는 항상성이 언제나 민주주의 내부에서 작동하고 있음을 발견합니다. 이 글의 제목은 감수성과 행동의 관계입니다. 알튀세르의 개념을 빌리자면 저는 우리의 감수성은 과잉결정적인 특징을 갖고 있고, 우리의 행동역시 과잉결정된 감수성들 사이에서 합리적이라고 생각하는 것을, 또는 합리적이지 않더라도 매력적으로 보이는 선택지를 고르고 있다고 봅니다. 그리고 그러한 '과잉결정의 상수들'과 '행동'을 이어가는 판단에 가장 큰 영향을 끼치는 것이 우리 사회에서 끊임없이 재생산되는 이데올로기라고 생각합니다. 합리성, 자유, 이해손실, 개인주의, 법률, 도덕, 보수성, 생존. 이 모든것의 토대로 존재하는 자본주의적 생산관계와 그 생산관계의 작동을 위해 구성된 경제적 구조. 그리고 이러한 경제적 구조와 사상적 이념이 상호작용하여 개인 단위의 행동이 감수성과 괴리되도록 만드는 것이야말로 단순히 법률이나 도덕, 시민성같은 제도적 요소로서 이야기 할 수 없는 하나의 '시대정신'이라고 생각합니다. 저는 그것을 우리의 자유의지를 강력하게 규정하는 '이데올로기'라고 여깁니다. 그래서 저는, 혹은 여러분중 몇몇 분들은 나쁜 선택을 하지 않고 선한 입장을 견지하면서도 비극을 재생산 하는데 일조하고 있습니다. 이 모순을 직시할 수 없게 만드는 모든 것들로부터 자유롭고 싶지만, 그러기 위한 전략을, 방법을 모르겠습니다. 변화의 구체적 대안이 되어줄 방법이 제게는 없다는 것을 핑계로 삼아 미완성의 글을 마칩니다.
