 악몽의 늪처럼 검고 어두운 우주. 한없이 깊고 검은 허무의 공간 속에서 병변으로 일그러진 망자의 피부처럼 기이한 암회색과 탁한 주황색이 뒤섞인 거대한 행성이 보인다. 목성. 태양계에서 태양 다음으로 거대한 이 행성으로부터 이 이야기는 시작된다.
대학교를 졸업한 지 1년. 누군가는 진작에 취업에 성공해 손꼽히는 대기업은 아니더라도 그럭저럭 다닐만한 회사에 다니며 일을 시작하고 많은 시행착오와 꾸지람, 상상했던 것과는 지독하게 다른 실무에 실망하고, 이 회사가 나랑 안 맞는 걸까? 하는 고민과 걱정을 하며 잠 못 이루는 새벽을 지나 이른 아침에 잔뜩 무거워진 눈꺼풀과 어깨를 이끌고 출근하기를 한 달, 첫 월급을 받고 부모님께 맛있는 저녁과 내복을 사드리며 ‘그래. 그래도 이런 맛에 회사 다니는 거지.’ 작은 성취감과 함께 다시 마음을 부여잡고, 그렇게 한 달, 두 달, 그리고 1년의 시간을 보냈을 동안, 난 아무런 성취도 이루지 못한 채 점차 패배감과 우울함의 진흙 구덩이 속으로 빠져들고 있었다.
결국, 회사를 도망치듯 그만두고 집에서 츄리닝과 함께하는 백수 생활이 시작됐다. 그런 내 모습이 안쓰러웠는지, 부끄러웠는지, 혹은 혐오스러웠는지, 어머니는 나에게 학철 삼촌과 함께 일해보지 않겠냐는 제안을 했다. 어머니에게는 아래로 두 살 터울의 삼촌이 있었다. 내가 네 살인가 다섯 살인가이었을 무렵부터 종종 우리 집에 방문하여 나에게 뒤로 한껏 잡아당겼다가 놓으면 쌩하고 앞으로 달려나가는 장난감 자동차나, 포도, 사과, 딸기, 오렌지 등 여러 가지 과일 맛이 나는 커다란 사탕 봉지를 사주곤 했던 학철 삼촌. 그럴 때면 어머니는 쓸데없이 뭐 이런 걸 다 사 오냐며 퉁명스럽게 말했지만 내심 반가워하는 표정을 짓곤 했다.
그 이후에도 삼촌은 짧게는 두 달에서 길게는 1년의 텀을 두고 나와
그 날밤의 기억은 매우 특별하게 남아 지금도 선명하게 떠오르지만, 도대체 그 망원경을 어떻게 설치하고 조절해서 별을 관측하는지는 전혀 기억이 나질 않는다. 심지어 망원경이 어디로 갔는지조차 알 수 없다. 중학교에 들어간 이후로는 학철 삼촌을 보는 일이 점점 줄어들었다. 이후로는 1년을 훌쩍 넘겨 2년인지, 3년인지 마다 찾아오던 삼촌은 어느새 내 기억 속에서 점차 희미해져 그저 그런 친척 중 한 명에 불과한 존재로 변질됐다. 그랬던 삼촌이 이제 와서 어머니의 입에서 다시 나올 줄은 몰랐다.
“학철 삼촌? 삼촌이 무슨 일을 하시는데?” “별 본다더라. 뭐 우주 관측손가 뭔가. 집에서 아무것도 안 하고 가만히 있는 거보단 낫지 않겠어, 아들? 가서 일도 배우고 머리도 식히면서 앞으로 어떻게 할지 진중하게 고민해봐. 조용한 호수 옆에 있다니까 지내기 좋을 거야.”
문득 13살 때 삼촌이 사준 망원경이 떠올랐다. 그래서 그런 선물을 사준 걸까? 어찌 됐든 집에서 어머니의 눈치만 보지 않을 수 있다면 어디든 좋았다. 가뜩이나 집을 나와 독립하고 싶었지만 더 이상 어머니에게 손을 벌릴 수 없어 집에 있는 듯 없는 듯 숨죽여 지내던 나에겐 오랜만에 찾아오는 희소식이었다. 곧바로 어머니에게 알았다고 대답한 뒤 짐을 챙겨 다음날 바로 집을 떠났다. 갈아입을 여벌의 옷 몇 벌과 신발, 노트북, 현금 조금과 잡다한 짐들. 그리고 한껏 부푼 기대감. 버스를 두 번 갈아타고 강원도의 높은 산 사이로 뱀처럼 구부정한 길을 타고 한참을 간 후에야 도착한 곳은 강원도의 한 천체 관측소 입구였다.
버스에서 내려 캐리어를 이끌고 산 위로 난 포장도로를 걸어 올라가자, 10월의 선선한 날씨에도 이내 땀이 삐질삐질 새어 나와 옷을 적셨다. 15분 정도 걸어 올라가자 마침내 공사장의 안전모를 쓴 듯한 돔 형태의 천체 관측소가 보였다. 천체 관측소 옆에는 어머니가 말했던 것처럼 고등학교 운동장 두 개 정도 크기의 잔잔한 호수가 보였고 시원한 가을바람이 잔잔한 물결을 일으키며 제법 아름다운 풍경을 만들어냈다.
천체 관측소 입구에서 어머니가 미리 알려준 삼촌의 번호로 전화를 걸었고 이내 문이 열리며 학철 삼촌이 나와 날 반겨주었다. 뜻밖에도 내가 기억했던 삼촌의 얼굴보다 10년은 더 나이 들어 보이는 모습에 당황했지만 애써 숨기며 나도 반갑게 인사했다.
“오랜만이구나 현석아. 언제 이렇게 다 컸는지 듬직하구나. 자, 어서 들어와라. 먼 길 오느라 수고했다.” “아니에요. 버스에서 내내 잠만 잤더니 되레 기운이 넘치네요. 그보다 여기 풍경이 어마어마한데요? 화보 찍어도 되겠어요.” “그러냐? 맘에 든다니 다행이구나. 하지만 이따 밤에 더욱 멋진 걸 보여주마. 한 번 보고 나면 저 호수 따위는 한낱 물웅덩이에 지나지 않는다는 걸 깨닫게 될 거다. 정말 멋진 건 저 위에 떠 있는 법이지.”
삼촌의 안내를 받으며 건물 안으로 가는 동안 오늘 밤에는 꼼짝없이 붙잡혀서 망원경이나 바라보겠구나 하는 생각이 들었다. 뭐, 아무래도 좋지만, 너무 오래만 보지 않았으면 했다. 첫날인 만큼 방에서 조용히 생각을 정리하며 노트북으로 일기를 쓰고 싶었다. 삼촌이 안내한 곳은 천체 관측소에서 조금 떨어진 2층 건물 숙소였다. 삼촌이 말하길 이곳은 아주 작은 규모의 관측소여서 인원도 자신을 포함해 4명뿐이지만 크게 일손이 부족하진 않으니 부담 갖지 말고 편히 지내라고 했다. 내가 머물 방과 와이파이 비밀번호, 저녁 식사 시간을 알려준 뒤 삼촌은 다시 천체 관측소로 갔고 난 천천히 짐을 푼 뒤 주변을 둘러볼 겸 숙소건물 밖으로 나왔다. 저녁 식사 시간까지는 아직 두 시간 정도 남았으니 여유롭게 호수 주변을 걸어볼 생각이었다. 수질이 괜찮으면 낚시도 가능하지 않을까 하는 생각에 발걸음이 가벼워졌다. 정말 오랜만에 느끼는 해방감과 여유였다.
그날 저녁. 미리 삼촌에게 들었던 식당에 가자 이미 날 제외한 모든 사람이 식탁에 앉아 기다리고 있었다. 식사를 앞두고 기다리게 한 것 같아 미안한 마음에 황급히 자리에 앉았다. 삼촌은 기다렸다는 듯이 날 소개했다.
“아, 지난번에 말했던 내 조카일세. 내 일을 돕기 위해 먼 길을 왔지. 인사하게나.” “안녕하세요. 삼촌 소개로 오게 되었습니다. 박현석이라고 합니다. 앞으로 잘 부탁드립니다.” “반가워요. 현석 씨. 전 이곳에서 비서 겸 총무를 맡고 있는 손은주에요. 잘 부탁해요.”
은주 씨는 관측소 앞에 있던 잔잔한 호수처럼 맑고 깨끗한 분위기의 여성이었다. 단정하게 빗어 올린 흑발과 희고 깨끗한 피부가 남자들에게 인기 꽤나 끌었을 법한 외모였다. 이 작은 관측소에서 총무와 비서라니. 삼촌은 무슨 생각인 걸까.
“아, 네. 반갑습니다. 정민수입니다.”
낮고 굵직한 민수 씨의 목소리는 묘하게 어두운 기운이 느껴졌다. 무언가에 억눌려 기가 죽은듯한, 생명력 없는 목소리. 불과 얼마 전까지 집에서 죽은 듯이 지내던 나의 목소리와 닮았었다.
“자 차린 건 없지만 어서들 들게.”
삼촌의 말이 끝나자 다들 식사를 시작했다. 음식 맛은 이렇다 할 특징 없이 평범했다. 식사를 마치자 삼촌은 날 데리고 관측소 곳곳을 돌아다니며 소개해줬다. 딱히 할 일이 없었던 나는 쉬고 싶었지만 댈만한 핑계가 없어 잠자코 끌려다녔고 밤 10시가 돼서야 내 방으로 돌아올 수 있었다. 방 안의 욕실에서 따뜻한 물로 샤워를 마치고 가벼운 옷으로 갈아입은 나는 침대에 엎드려 노트북을 켰다. 짤막하게라도 일기를 쓸 생각이었지만 이내 방문을 두드리는 소리가 들렸다. 네, 하고 문을 열자 은주 씨가 편한 복장을 한 채 서 있었다.
“샤워는 다 하셨나요? 관측소에서 소장님이 찾으세요. 아직 가는 길이 헷갈리실 테니 제가 안내해 드릴게요.” “아아. 네 감사합니다. 어…… 샤워는 다 했고 지금 바로 가면 되겠네요. 하하”
은주 씨의 갑작스러운 방문에 나는 당황한 기색을 감추지 못했고 관측소로 가는 내내 허둥댔다. 대학교를 졸업하고 나선 가끔 학교 동기들을 만날 때를 제외하곤 여자와 얘기할 기회가 없었기에 나는 두근거리는 심장을 쉽사리 가라앉힐 수 없었다.
“방은 좀 괜찮으세요? 어디 불편하신 곳은 없고요?” “네. 침대 매트리스가 거의 새 거던데요? 제가 살던 집보다 더 깨끗해요. 이대로 여기서 눌러살고 싶을 정도예요.”
내가 호들갑을 떨며 이야기하자 은주 씨는 풋, 하고 웃으며 얘기했다. 굉장히 귀여운 미소였다.
“그 정도예요? 보통 현석 씨 나이 또래면 이렇게 한적한 곳 심심하지 않아요? 주변에 죄다 호수며 산밖에 없는 곳인데.” “제가 좀 애늙은이 기질이 있어서요. 조용하고 한적해서 되려 좋네요. 다른것 보다 엄마 잔소리 안 들어도 되는 게 최고예요.” “아무래도 그렇겠네요. 저랑 취향이 비슷한 것 같아 좋네요.”
점점 대화가 트이면서 사이가 가까워진다고 느낄 때쯤, 커다란 원기둥 형태의 건물 앞에 도착했다. 관측소였다. 관측소 문이 열리자 약간의 한기가 느껴졌다. 산 중턱에 있으니 가을밤에도 제법 온도가 떨어질 만하지만 숙소보다 확실히 추웠다. 거대한 천체 망원경을 손보던 학철 삼촌은 날 보며 크게 반가워했다.
“현석이 왔구나. 자, 어서 들어와라. 낮에 얘기했던 대로 멋진 걸 보여주마. 아마 너도 좋아할 거다. 망원경 좌표는 미리 맞춰놨으니 보기만 하면
삼촌은 자랑스러운 표정으로 날 바라보며 망원경을 볼 것을 재촉했고 나는 없는 관심을 억지로 만들어내며 망원경 렌즈에 눈을 맞췄다. 렌즈에 비친 것은 지독하리만큼 검은 어둠의 한 가운데에 위치한 목성이었다. 마치 병변으로 일그러진 망자의 피부처럼 보이는 암회색과 탁한 주황색이 기이하게 뒤섞인 모습이었다. 그 기이한 행성의 하단부에는 광인의 눈처럼 한껏 치켜뜬 눈동자 모양의 소용돌이가 칼끝처럼 날 직시하고 있었다. 갑작스러운 미지와의 조우에 나는 이해할 수 없는 두려움을 느꼈다. 렌즈에서 눈을 떼 저것을 그만 보고 싶었다. 아니, 저것이 날 그만 보게 하고 싶었다. 하지만 마비된 것처럼 굳어버린 내 몸은 쉬 움직이지 않았고 나는 찰나의 긴 시간 동안 그 끔찍한 행성과 서로를 바라봤다.
귀에 삐 하고 지독한 이명이 들리는가 싶더니 바늘 같은 고음 사이로 중음의 기이한 울림소리가 찢고 나와 내 귀를 난도질하기 시작했다. 깊은 파이프 관에서 울리는 바람소리 같기도 하고 오래된 종이 공명하는 소리 같기도 했다. 목성과 나의 거리는 6억 km가 넘음에도 불구하고 나는 금방이라도 목성으로 빨려 들어갈 것 같은 공포심에 휩싸였다. 온몸의 감각이 낯설게 느껴질 무렵 어깨에 누군가의 손길이 느껴졌다. 그제서야 정신을 차린 내가 고개를 돌린 곳엔 걱정스러운 표정의 은주 씨가 있었다.
“괜찮으신 거죠? 옆에서 보고 있었는데 거의 몇 분 동안이나 눈을 깜빡이지 않고 계셔서…” “네? 아…. 네. 괜찮습니다. 잠시 정신 줄을 놓고 있었네요. 하하…”
은주 씨가 나를 걱정하는 동안 학철 삼촌은 나에게 어떤 큰 반응을 기대하는 얼굴로 날 바라보고 있었다. 계속해서 강조했던 멋진 것을 보여준 것에 대한 반응.
“목성…이죠? 주황색에 그 눈동자 같은 소용돌이도 있고…” “그래. 태양계에서 태양을 제외하면 가장 거대한 행성이지. 그 소용돌이는 대적점이라고 부른다. 지구보다 훨씬 크지. 겉으로 보기에는 그저 소용돌이무늬처럼 보이지만 사실 거대한 태풍이라고 생각하면 될 거다. 그것도 지구의 5배 크기인 거대한 폭풍우. 상상할 수 있겠니? 지금 우리가 밟고 있는 이 행성보다 더 거대한 태풍을.”
물론 상상할 수 없었다. 길이가 수만 킬로미터나 되는 태풍을 상상하기에 난 한걸음에 수십 센티미터를 걷고 끽해야 버스나 자동차를 타고 수십 킬로미터를 이동하는 작은 인간일 뿐이니까. 지구 밖의 우주와 다른 행성들이란 개념은 지나치게 거대하고 멀었다. 그런 내 생각과는 관계없이 삼촌은 계속해서 목성에 관해 설명했다.
“목성은 서양에서는 그리스 신화에 등장하는 제우스를 상징했고 과거 중국에서는 목성의 공전주기가 12년인걸 감안해 십이지를 담당하는 별로 여기기도 했단다. 동서고금을 가리지 않고 위대한 별로 추앙받았다고 볼 수 있지. 내가 이 관측소를 설립한 것도 모두 저 목성을 관측하고 연구하기 위해서다. 저 거대하고 그 거대함보다 더 거대한 신비로움을 가진 행성의 비밀을 꼭 알고 싶거든.”
삼촌은 그 이후에도 계속해서 목성에 대한 이야기를 늘어놓았지만 방금 겪은 이상한 일 때문인지 집중이 잘 안됐고
“목성은, 무거운 질량만큼이나 거대한 탐욕을 가지고 있어. 가지고 있는 위성만 해도 69개나 되지. 마음에 드는 별은 모두 자기에게 끌어들이는 거야. 부디
삼촌은 이미 목성을 인격화하고 있었다. 더 얘기를 들었다간 머리가 이상해질 것 같아 몸이 안 좋다고 둘러대고 숙소로 돌아왔다. 침대에 누운 뒤에도 난 쉽사리 잠을 청할 수 없었다. 어렵게 잠이 든 나는 지독한 악몽을 꿨다. 저녁에 목성을 관측하며 들었던 기이한 울림소리가 방 안을 진동시키며 거센 폭풍우가 몰아치는 가운데 찢겨 날아간 천장 위로 눈 안에 다 담을 수도 없을 만큼 거대한 대적점의 태풍이 날 바라보는 꿈이었다. 그 거대한 눈동자는 분명, 날 바라보고 있었다. 기이한 울림소리 때문에 귀가 터질 것만 같았다.
