라스트 제다이를 옹호하는 사람들이 내놓는 많은 논리가 기존 스타워즈 세계관의 한계를 넘어서게 했다는 건데요. 저는 이 시점에 갑자기 스타워즈 시리즈의 설정과 세계관, 스토리라인에 필요 이상으로 엄격한 잣대를 드러내는 것이 새삼스럽다는 생각이 듭니다. 스타워즈 세계관의 헛점은 수십년간 너무 명확하게 드러났지만 결코 그 시리즈의 매력을 깎는 요소는 아니었는데 말이죠 저는 스타워즈 시리즈의 매력이 단순성에 있다고 봅니다. 선과 악의 대립, 모든 것을 가능하게 하는 포스 같은거요. 그게 단점과 한계가 있을지언정 많은 사람들에게 어필하는 강점을 부정할 수 없고 굳이 그걸 버려야 될 이유도 없다고 봅니다. 사람들에 따라선 그런 허술한 세계관과 영웅서사에 불만을 느끼는 경우도 있습니다. 그 사람들이 틀린건 아니죠. 다만 그 사람들에게 스타워즈 시리즈가 맞지 않을 뿐입니다. 그건 어쩔 수 없는 일이죠. 프리퀄 시리즈가 망한 이유는 오리지널 스타워즈 시리즈의 설정, 스토리상의 한계 때문이 아닙니다. 이유는 간단해요. 영화를 정말로 못만들었습니다. 등장인물들의 대사는 끔찍하고, 형편없는 CGI, 자자 빙크스같은 발암 캐릭터가 영화를 망친거죠. 거기에 더해서 조지 루카스카 갑작스럽게 내놓은 미디클로디언 설정이라던지, 제다이 결혼금지같은 갑툭튀 설정도 욕을 먹었죠. 이게 핵심입니다. '갑작스럽게 내놓은' 설정이요. 난데없이 내놓은 설정과 이야기가 설득력을 갖지 못한다면 시리즈 전체에 불협화음을 만듭니다. 물론 시리즈의 새 작품이 기존 세계관과 캐릭터에 대한 변화를 추구하는 건 기본적으로는 바람직하다고 봅니다. 하지만 그게 결코 쉬운일이 아니고 많은 반발을 일으킬 수 있습니다. 특히나 많은 팬들이 애정을 갖는 시리즈는 더욱 그렇죠. 따라서 기존 시리즈의 작품보다 월등히 뛰어난 작품을 만들지 못하면 그 시도의 좋은 취지도 퇴색된다고 봅니다. 전 새로운 변화의 대표적인 성공 사례로 다크나이트, 대표적인 실패 사례로 이번 DCFU를 들고 싶습니다. 다크나이트에서 기존의 장난스러움을 버리고 섬뜩함을 배가시킨 조커는 엄청난 호평을 받은 반면 원작의 매력을 모조리 버리고 다크나이트 조커의 어설픈 짝퉁으로 전락한 배트맨 vs 슈퍼맨의 렉스 루터는 혹평받았죠 라스트 제다이는 어떨까요? 솔직히 이 영화에 대한 혹평은 좀 과장된 측면이 있다고는 생각합니다. 그럼에도 불구하고 개인적으로 라스트 제다이는 실패에 가깝다고 봅니다. 의도가 어떻든간에 스타워즈 시리즈를 사랑하는 팬들에게 충분한 설득력을 갖지 못했기 때문이죠. 더군다나 시퀄 삼부작의 두 번째 작품이 첫 작품과 전혀 다른 논조를 갖는다는건 좀 문제가 있다고 생각합니다. 이럴거면 다른 분께서 말씀하신 것처럼 첫 작품부터 라스트 제다이의 노선을 탔어야죠. 그랬다면 팬들이 분노했을 테고 에피소드 8의 흥행이 망할 걸 우려했던 걸까요? 잘 모르겠습니다.
