* 편의상 반말체로 작성하였습니다. 1. 지금 생각해 보면, 프로야구 초창기에 야구가 뭔지 제대로 알지도 못하는 서울의 국딩이 삼성 팬을 한다는게 그렇게 쉬운 일은 아니었던 것 같다. 한참 친구들 사이에서 프로야구단 어린이 회원 가입의 광풍이 휩쓸고 지나가던 시기에, 친구들 대부분은 연고지인 서울의 MBC 청룡을 응원하게 되거나. 몇달 지나서는 박철순과 김우열이 멋있다면서 대전 OB 베어스의 팬이 되었고, 나와 같은 삼성팬은 한반에 한두명이 있을까 말까 였으니 말이다. 별 생각없이 단지 사자라는 동물이 좋았아서 응원팀을 정한 나는, MBC 청룡의 팬이셨지만 직장이 삼성이던 아버님의 지원으로 어머니와 동방 프라자 (현 신세계?) 에 가서 삼성 어린이 회원에 무난히 가입하였으나. 그 이후로 그 전날 삼성이 진줄도 모르고 삼성의 점퍼를 입고 학교에 갔다가 여지없이 친구들의 놀림감이 되고는 했던 기억이 남아있다. 하지만, 다행스럽게도 당시 삼성 라이온스는 국가대표팀 멤버들의 절반 이상을 차지하던 대구 경북 출신의 야구 엘리트들이 주축이 되어 구성되어 있었고. 나는 비록 같은 반에 단 한명의 동지를 두었었지만 다른 팀 팬들의 놀림과 공세를 원년 삼성의 우수한 성적을 바탕으로 해서 이겨낼 수 있었다. 사실 따져보면 내가 다른 친구들을 놀릴수 있는 경우가 더 많았으니... ㅋ 그리고, 그 해에 당연히 삼성은 다른 팀들을 앞서나가며 우승권 싸움을 벌였고, 결국 OB와 첫 패권을 놓고 대결을 가졌는데. 그때는 상상도 못했던, 지긋지긋하도록 계속되고 끝나지 않던 삼성의 저주받은 가을이 이때부터 시작되었다. 참. 한참이 지난 지금 생각해봐도 정말 기가 막힌 것이. 처음, 원년에 좌완 에이스 이선희가 OB의 김유동에게 한국시리즈의 승패를 결정짓는 만루홈런을 얻어맞고 눈물을 훔치던 것을 지켜보고. 2년 뒤에는 그 자신만만하던 최동원에게 틀어막히며, 질래야 질수가 없다던 시리즈를 에이스 김일융이 유두열에게 3점 홈런을 맞고 한방에 날려버리던 것을. 그 후에는 한 시대를 지배했던 선동열의 해태에게 완벽하게 제압 당하는걸 보고 나니, 어느새 삼성의 그 화려했던 원년 황금세대는 끝나가고 있었다. 삼성의 그 "국대급 멤버" 들은 결국 한국시리즈 우승을 차지하지 못했었고, 모기업의 모토였던 1등주의, 1류주의는 야구에서도 예외가 아니었던터라. "우승을 못한 죄" 로, 내가 그렇게도 좋아했던 장효조와 김시진은 트레이드를 통해 옮겨간 롯데의 유니폼을 입은 상태에서. 그리고 당시 삼성의 상징과도 같던 이만수는 은퇴식도 없이 쫓겨나듯 조용히 은퇴하고 말았다. 이들이 그렇게 삼성을 떠나가는 걸 보면서, 어린 나이였음에도 처음으로 느꼈던 것 같다. 이 팀 참 매정하다고. 2. 그리고, 이만수가 아직은 건재하던 시절에 맞이했던 90년대. 1990년, 비록 한국시리즈는 아니었지만 처음으로 가을에 해태를 이겼다. 수비형 3루수였던 김용국과 장효조를 대신해 삼성으로 온 부산 사나이 김용철이 연 이틀동안 선동열을 홈런으로 두들기면서 처음으로 해태와의 시리즈를 승리. 누구든지 다 이길수 있을 것 같았던 마음으로 맞이했던 한국시리즈는 그해 신바람을 일으키던 LG에 휘말리며 4연패로 끝나버렸었지만, 그래도 큰 아쉬움이 없던 해로 기억할 수 있는건, "그" 해태와 선동열을 이겼다는 기쁨이 그만큼 커서였을까. 그리고 1993년. 아직도 한이 맺히는 시리즈. 괴물 양준혁의 등장. 재기한 홈런왕 김성래. 천재 강기웅과 류중일의 골든 글러브 키스톤 콤비에 여전히 상대에게 중압감을 주던 대타 이만수. 김상엽-박충식-김태한의 젊은 10승 투수 트리오. 그래도 아직 이닝은 먹어주던 성준과 가끔 땜빵은 해주던 류명선, 이태일. 한방있던 스나이퍼 어깨의 우익수 이종두. 전문가들 사이에서는 정규시즌의 순위 업셋이 일어날수도 있다는 말이 조심스럽게 나오던 그해의 한국 시리즈 상대는 역시 또다시 1위 해태. 아마 평생 가도 못잊을듯한, 선동열을 포함한 해태 투수 3인을 상대하며 해태의 강타선에 연신 3구 승부를 벌이고 삼진쇼를 펼쳐대던 박충식의 15이닝 181구 무승부 경기와, 절대 밀리지 않던 전력으로 4차전까지 앞서 나가는걸 보며 이번에는 이길수 있겠다는 생각을 했었지만, 결국 그때도 다시 지고 말았다. 그 해에는 선동열 때문이 아니었다. 저쪽에도 새로 등장한, 평범한 안타와 볼넷을 2루타, 3루타로 만들어버리는 괴물이 있었다. 이종범이라는. 참... 패배가 억울하다는 생각이 들 정도로 아쉬웠던 시리즈였다. 정말로 5차전 이후의 각성한 이종범만 아니었다면. 그리고 이후 몇해간 세대교체의 여파로 포스트 시즌 진출도 버거워하던 부진에 빠진 삼성에, 그때까지 본 적이 없던 "난 놈" 이 하나 나타났다. 투수로 입단했지만 팔꿈치가 안좋아서 일단 한시즌만 타자를 해보자고 했었는데, 예상보다 성적이 훨씬 좋아서 아예 타자로 전향했다던 친구. 선수 치고는 호리호리 해 보이던 체격에 순해보이는 얼굴로 홈런 30개는 기본으로 때려대던 이승엽을 중심으로, 삼성은 세대교체에 성공하며 첫 암흑기를 끝낸다. 3. 2002년. 전성기로 향해가던 이승엽이 한시즌 54개의 홈런을 날리고, 우승을 하기 위해서라면 피도 눈물도 없던 구단답게 프랜차이즈 스타인 양준혁을 어거지로 떠나게 하면서 데려온. 이승엽과 동갑내기인 임창용이 애니콜이라는 별명을 얻으며 아무리 호투를 거듭했어도, 삼성은 여전히 가을에 무기력했다. 99년 플옵에서는 박정태와 호세, 임수혁의 롯데에게. 01년 한국시리즈에서는 한회에 8점차를 역전당하고 상대팀에게 미라클 두산이라는 닉네임까지 안겨주며 다시 또 패배. 삼성을 머릿속에 떠올리면 이 팀은 뭘 해도 안된다는 생각만 들던 그때, 나는 삼성에 대해 실망하다 못해 낙담의 과정을 지나가고 있었다. 이미 몇해전 특급 포수였던 김동수와, 박충식까지 FA 보상 선수로 내주며 영입했던 투수 이강철이 모두 삼성에서의 첫해에 커리어 로우를 기록하며 삼성이 나자빠지는걸 보고, 거기에 더해서 솔직히 맘에는 안들었지만 우승만 할 수 있다면... 이라는 마음으로 이해해야 했던 우승 청부사 적장 김응룡까지 모셔오듯 영입했는데도 우승에 실패하며 졌으니 말이다. 그리고, 결국 그 다음해였던 2002년. 삼성은 "정말 삼성답지 않게" 한번 내쳐버렸던 FA 양준혁을 영입한다. 김응룡 감독의 적극적인 영입 의지에 대한 프런트의 답이라고는 했지만, 자신의 몸 속에는 푸른피가 흐른다던 간판타자의 재영입은 팬들을 환호하게 만들었고. 그 전해에 선수협 파동으로 인한 트레이드로 입단한 마해영과 2년차 외야수 박한이, 용병 유격수 브리또와 좌완 외국인 투수 엘비라. 혹사에도 불구하고 건재하던 에이스 임창용. 그리고 이승엽. 이들이 삼성의 정규시즌 1위와 한국시리즈 첫 우승을 만들었다. 6차전 그날, 9회까지 시리즈 내내 부진하던 이승엽을 욕해대며 중계를 보다가, 그가 LG의 혼이라던 이상훈에게 동점 스리런을 날리던 순간에 얼마나 기뻤는지 모르겠다. 그 바로 직후에, 마해영이 바뀐 투수 최원호를 상대로 시리즈 끝내기 홈런을 때렸을 때는 이게 진짜인가 싶어서 얼이 빠졌었고. 그렇게 맞이했던 삼성의 한국시리즈 첫 우승에 나도 모르게 나오던 눈물을 찔끔거리며, 미친놈처럼 웃다가 맥주를 들이키던 기억이 아직도 머릿속에 선명하게 남아있다. 전후기 리그 통합 우승은 있었지만, 처음으로 경험했던 한국시리즈에서의 승리. 내가 그렇게 삼성에 대해 애증이 겹쳐 있었는지 모르던걸 깨닫게 하는 계기가 되기도 했던 한해였다. 4. 그 이후. 선동열의 시대. 약간 기대에 못미쳤던 03년과 04년 시즌을 지나, 삼성은 천적이자 숙적이었던 선동열이 감독이 된 시대를 맞이한다. 김응룡의 시대와는 뭔가 또 느낌이 달랐다. 삼성 감독 선동열이라... 경상도, 전라도의 지역감정을 떠나 서울 토박이 삼성팬인 나에게도 삼성 감독 선동열은 참 어색한데다 받아들이기가 어려웠고, 그의 부임 직후부터 삼성의 전통적인 팀 컬러가 변화하기 시작했다. 타격과 수비력의 팀에서 투수와 수비력의 팀으로. 그렇게 선동열이 바꾼 팀 컬러와 투수 유망주들을 거의 모두 불펜투수로 성장시키는 전략을 통해 삼성은 성적을 냈고, 2003년에 56개의 홈런을 쳐낸 이승엽이 시즌 종료뒤 팀을 떠나 일본에 진출했음에도 05년, 06년에 팀 역사에 전례가 없던 한국시리즈 2연패를 달성했지만. 삼성의 야구를 보는 것 같지가 않던 느낌에, 우연히 음식점에서 보는 중계 정도가 아니면 삼성의 경기를 거의 본 기억이 없는게 이맘때이기도 했다. 선 감독은 그후에 삼성의 두번째 암흑기를 거쳐 세대교체를 이루어내고 팀을 떠났지만, 글쎄. 솔직히 양준혁의 강제 은퇴 하나만으로도 팀을 떠날때나 지금이나 그다지 좋은 기억이 많이 남아있는 사람은 아니다. 5. 1-1-1-1. 그리고 몰락. 선동열의 후임으로, 20년이 넘는동안 선수와 코치로서 계속 삼성맨이었던 류중일이 감독에 취임하며, 삼성 라이온스의 역사상 최전성기이자 최초의 왕조가 시작되었다. 막강 불펜. 채태인-최형우-박석민 (셋중에 남아있는 선수가 없구나...) 의 중심타선과 40홈런의 악동 나바로. 외인투수 2인+윤성환-장원삼-차우찬(+배영수) 로 만들어진 선발 로테이션. 2011~2015 시즌까지 정규시즌 1위 5회, 한국시리즈 우승 4회. 2012년 부터 이승엽이 가세한 뒤에도, 베테랑인 그의 부담을 덜어준다며 6번을 맡길 정도로 막강했던 라인업. 80년대의 해태, 90년대 후반과 00년대 초반의 현대, 00년대 후반의 SK를 이어 삼성이 최강의 왕조를 만들었고, 솔직히 삼성 팬으로서 야구 볼맛나던 시기이기도 했다. 하지만, 첫 우승 이후 선수들이 하나 둘씩 타 구단이나 해외로 빠져나가기 시작했고, 그 후에 이 왕조는 당연히 이번에도 우승하겠지 싶었던 2015년, 팀 전력의 핵심이던 투수들의 도박사건으로 인해 어이없이 끝나버리고 말았다. 참... 어이가 없다못해 황당한 일이었다. 다른 팀들의 전력이 상승한 것도 물론 영향이 있었겠지만 내부에서의 문제로 인해 팀이 무너져버렸으니... 6. 현재. 9-9. 최근 2년간의 순위. 삼성 라이온스의 최대 암흑기는 8개구단 시스템이었던 90년대 중반의 5-5-6과, 선동열 감독 시기의 4-4-5 였는데, 다행히 지금까지 최하위를 경험하지 않은 유일한 원년구단의 타이틀은 잃지 않았지만, 계속 이대로 가면 꼴찌는 시간 문제가 아닐까 하는 생각이 들 정도로 그냥 "야구를 못한다.'한참 성적이 좋고 통합 4연패를 할때에도 문제가 있다는 말이 나오던 외국인 투수 스카우트의 문제는 여전히 몇년째 계속 되고있고, 장원삼의 노쇠화와 왕조의 주축이었던 투수들의 이탈. 그리고 유망주들의 더딘 성장으로 인해 삼성의 투수력은 리그 최하위권이며, 타선 역시 리그 중하위권에 불과하다. 또한, 팀의 현재이자 미래인 김상수와 구자욱. 그리고 베테랑인 윤성환이 그와 마지막 인사를 나눌때 눈물을 보일 정도로 팀의 리더이자 정신적 지주 역할을 충실히 해내면서,은퇴 시즌인 올해에도 20개가 넘는 홈런에 2할8푼대의 타율. 100개에 근접하는 타점을 올려낸 이승엽도 이제는 떠났다. 그리고, 아무리 초보라고는 해도 팔꿈치 부상 전력이 있는 마무리 장필준에게 아웃카운트 4개, 5개를 기본으로 맡겨버리는 김한수라는 감독의 존재도 삼성에게는 큰 문제다. 외국인 투수들을 잘 뽑아오면 그래도 중하위권 정도로는 도약하지 않을까 싶지만, 항상 안되던 일이 사람 하나 안바꾸고 잘 될리가 없으니 내년에도 탈꼴찌 싸움이나 할 듯하고... 예전이나 지금이나 내가 가장 사랑하는 스포츠는 축구이고, 두번째가 테니스. 세번째가 야구가 될 터인데. 아니. 정확히 이야기를 하자면 야구가 아니라 삼성 라이온스와 뉴욕 양키스. 이 두 팀을 좋아한다는게 맞겠지만. 이런저런 안좋은 일들이 계속 터져나와도 삼성에 대한 관심을 아예 끊어버릴 수는 없는걸 보면, 어린 시절의 추억들이 강하긴 강한것 같다. 여전히 이 팀이 지는걸 보면 기분이 좋지가 않고, 이기면 그래도 피식하는 웃음이 나와버리니... 팀의 레전드이자 리더, 정신적 지주까지 은퇴하고 없을 다음 시즌. 그래도 언젠가의 부활을 바라며 삼성 라이온스의 건투를 빈다.
