 광주에서 목포까지는 한 번에 이동했다. 처음부터 한 번에 이동하려고 계획했던 것은 아니었다. 광주를 빠져나올 때는 이미 점심 나절이었고, 나주에 도착했을 때는 땅거미가 지고 있었다. 사우나에 들어갔는데 잠을 자는 공간이 없었다. 마루에서 눈을 붙이려고 했지만 여의치 않았다. 하는 수 없이 밖으로 나왔다. 기왕 이리된 거 밤에 걸어보자는 생각을 했다. 1시간도 채 안 되어서 후회가 밀려들었다. 날씨는 생각보다 춥지 않았다. 하지만 피로가 겹쳐서 어디라도 눕고 싶다는 마음이 강했다. 길 가다 보이는 정자에 누워있다가, 휴게소 앞 탁자에 엎드리는 등 별짓을 다 했다. 나중에는 다리 밑으로 기어들어가 나뭇가지를 모아서 불을 붙이려고도 했다. 그러나 라이터가 고장났다. 라이터를 집어던졌다. 독이 잔뜩 올라서 끝까지 가보자고 마음 먹었다. 머리는 맑아졌다. 나주 외곽에 있는 작은 마을들을 지나, 함평으로 넘어갔다. 차선공사에서 일할 때 자잘한 보수 작업을 위해 방문한 적이 있어 길은 눈에 익었다. 도로는 새로 낸 것처럼 깔끔했는데, 가로등은 없었다. 풍경은 어둠에 묻혀 희미했다. 계획적으로 짜여진 도로 형태가 반복되는 무늬처럼 느껴서 기분은 몽롱했다. 졸려서 그랬을지도 모르겠다. 함평 시가지에 도달할 즈음에는 세상에 푸른 빛이 돌기 시작했다. 함평역사에 들어가 30분 정도 휴식을 취했다. 새벽 5시에서 6시 사이였다. 아침부터 어디론가 가시려는지 할머니 한 분께서 역 관계자 분께 시각을 묻고 계셨다. 철도청 관련 잡지를 뒤적이다가 다시 길을 나섰다. 무안이 다가오면서 풍경은 고속도로에서 논과 소로로 변해갔다. 아침에는 안개가 가득 끼었다. 수확을 끝낸 논 위에 해가 솟았다. 무안은 생각보다 큰 도시였다. 아침으로 빵을 두개 먹고, 고등학교 동문회에 밀린 회비를 송금한 후 농협에서 깜빡 잠이 들었다. 직원 분이 나를 흔들어 깨웠다. 그 사이 1시간 정도가 지나 있었다. 피로를 가득 베어물어 텁텁한 입맛을 다시며 목포를 향했다. 안개가 전조였는지 비가 내리기 시작했다. 소나기이기를 빌었지만 헛수고였다. 언제나처럼 우의를 걸쳐내고 빗속을 걸었다. 빗물과 피로가 다리를 아래로 잡아 끌었다. 지도로 가늠해 보면 멀지 않은 거리였지만, 내 상태가 말이 아니었다. 꾸역꾸역 걸어가다 차에 눌려 죽은 개를 보았다. 내장이 튀어나와 있었다. 그대로 두면 사체가 더 훼손될 것 같았다. 사체를 수풀로 옮겼다. 차가운 몸과 달리 털은 너무나도 부드러웠다. 목포 시내에 도착한 것은 오후 4시 정도였다. 도착한 순간에는 피로와 졸음이 느껴지지도 않았다. 전날 오전 10시에 출발했으니 중간중간 쉬었던 시간을 제외하더라도 하루를 꼬박 넘게 걸은 셈이었다. 찜질방을 찾아 들어가 죽은 듯이 잠에 들었다. 창 너머로 들리는 빗소리가 기분 좋았다. 깨어난 것은 다음 날 밤이었다. 멍하니 밖으로 나와서 생각해보니 밤에는 섬으로 가는 차편이 없었다. 몇 시간 뒤면 길이 열리는데 찜질방으로 돌아가기도 애매했다. 목포과학대에 들어가 5시간 정도 선잠을 잤다. 아침 목포에는 물안개가 가득차 있었다. 여객선 터미널은 일출과 함께 반짝이고 있었다. 선착장 모래 바닥 위에서 한 아버지가 딸을 안고 바다를 바라보고 있었다. 신안에 가는 것은 초등학교 때 이후로 근 10년 만이었다. 팔금도 행 배에 몸을 실었다. 12월 23일이었다. 섬에 내려 마을 버스를 탔다. 부모님께 연락해서 알아온 주소를 말씀드리니, 그 할머니 손자냐고 반갑게 맞아주셨다. 막상 내렸는데 여기가 할머니 댁이 맞는지는 확실하지 않았다. 그 때 한 할머니께서 밖으로 나오더니 내 이름을 불렀다. 그러더니 우짜자고 여기까지 왔느냐면서 볼을 쓰다듬었다. 예전보다 청력이 더 악화되셔서 의사소통은 힘들었다. 할머니는 연신 먹을 것을 내오셨다. 나는 주는 대로 받아먹었다. 그리고 이불 속에 들어가 잠에 빠졌다. 다시 일어났을 때는 저녁이었다. 눈을 뜨니 할머니가 나를 보며 웃고 계셨다. 밤이 다가오는 것을 알리는지 빛이 붉었다. 섬을 쏘다니며 이틀을 보냈다. 크리스마스가 되었다. 할머니는 나를 쳐다보셨다. 나는 웃으며 교회로 따라가겠다고 했다. 여행 전이었으면 기독교를 믿지 않는데 교회를 갈 이유도 없다고 생각했을지도 모른다. 하지만 그즈음에는 그런 것은 딱히 중요하지 않다고 생각하는 상태였다. 할머니께서 좋아하시면 그걸로 된 거였다. 교회를 가서 열심히 설교를 듣고, 기도를 드리고, 찬송가를 불렀다. 이 섬에서 교회는 일종의 마을회관이었다. 예배가 끝나고 나서 잔치가 있었다. 마을 할머니들은 계속해서 내 입에 반찬을 물렸다. 집에 오는 길에 할머니 사진을 한 장 찍었다. 할머니는 웃었다. 도착해서 낮잠을 잤다. 두어시간 자고 일어나니 옆집 할머니가 놀러와 계셨다. 옆집 할머니는 이따가 자신의 집으로 놀러오라고 하셨다. TV를 보며 뒹굴거리고 있는데, 할머니께서 장롱을 뒤지시더니 돈을 꺼내셨다. 나라에서 나오는 보조금을 모아두셨다 했다. 나는 극구 사양했다. 할머니는 목소리를 높이며 받으라고 했다. 할머니께서 원하시는 바대로 해야겠다는 생각에 돈을 받았다. 옆집 할머니가 생각 나 옆집으로 이동했다. 다른 할머니도 한 분 더 계셨다. 할머니께 돈을 받은 이야기를 하자 잘했다고 칭찬을 해주셨다. 나는 할머니, 할아버지, 그리고 아버지에 대해 물었다. 그리고 이런 기회가 아니었으면 듣지 못했을 많은 이야기를 들었다. 얼마전 듣기로는, 그 할머니들은 모두 돌아가셨다고 한다. 다음 날 할머니는 일찍 일어나셨다. 출항 시간이 아침이었기에 나도 일찍 일어났다. 할머니는 나를 토닥였다. 점심에도 배는 있다고 했다. 조금이라도 더 있다 가기를 바라셨다. 그러나 곧 밖에서 나를 부르는 소리가 들렸다. 첫 날 여기까지 태워주신 버스 기사 분이셨다. "잘 다녀와라 내 새끼야". 할머니는 담담하게 웃었다. 나는 버스 뒷자리에 앉아 눈에 들어오지 않을 때까지 할머니를 바라보았다. 아침 선착장에는 어디서 왔는지 모를 수많은 사람들이 배를 기다리고 있었다. 목포를 빠져나가는데도 생각보다 시간이 오래 걸렸다. 시내를 천천히 둘러보며 이동했기 때문이었다. 대불산단을 벗어났을 때는 이미 해가 뉘엿뉘엿 저물고 있었다. 광주에서 목포로 왔던 기억을 떠올렸다. 이번에도 해남까지 한 번에 가보기로 했다. 일단은 배를 든든히 채워야 겠다는 생각을 했다. 주변에 나주 곰탕집이 보였다. 광주 친구가 꼭 한 번 먹어보라고 추천한 프랜차이즈였다. 음식점 주인은 내 행색을 보며 신기해했다. 여행에 대해 이야기를 하자, 식사비를 받지 않겠다고 하셨다. 호의를 감사히 받고 길을 나섰다. 영암-금호 방조제를 건넜을 때는 밤이었다. 목포에서 해남으로 가는 길은 세 가지가 있었다. 방조제를 건너지 않고 월출산 국립 공원 남쪽을 돌아 아래로 내려가는 길, 방조제를 건넌 후 산이면을 따라 해남까지 쭉 내려가는 길, 그리고 서쪽으로 우회하여 진도와 전라우수영을 들려 돌아가는 길이었다. 이미 방조제를 건넌 터라 가용한 선택지는 두 개였다. 해남에서 일할 때 우수영과 해남 사이의 황산면에서 일했던 터라 그 길을 가고 싶은 마음이 있었다. 하지만 길이 너무나도 멀어지기에 산이면에서 해남으로 빠지기로 했다. 방조제 너머에서 발을 뻗고 있던 불빛까지도 점차 주위에서 사라졌다. 안으로 들어가는 길목에 한 음식점이 있었다. 불이 새어나오는 마당에 남자 아이와 여자 아이가 놀고 있었다. 아이가 나에게 물었다. '어디 가세요?'. 나는 대답했다. '해남으로 가.' 아이가 다시 물었다. '어디서 오셨는데요?'. 나는 다시 답했다. '서울에서 왔어.' 아이가 외쳤다. '거짓말! 어떻게 서울에서 한 번에 해남까지 가요.' 나는 웃었다. 아이는 안으로 들어가면서 외쳤다. '엄마, 저 아저씨 서울에서 왔대.' 등불도 없는 길에, 달도 채 높게 뜨지 않은 밤. 세상은 그림자로 뒤덮여 있었다. 희미한 빛으로 주변을 분간할 수는 있지만 숲은 검고, 하늘은 짙은 잿빛이였다. 그 동안 여행을 하면서 주변의 풍경에 압도된 적은 없었지만, 그 날 밤에 보았던 풍경은 특별했다. 처음에는 랜턴을 켜고 나가다가, 풍경을 흠집내는 듯한 느낌에 랜턴을 껐다. 어둠에 홀린 듯 길을 나아갔다. 길을 나선지 10시간 가까이 되어가니 슬슬 다리에 무리가 올 법 한데, 그 때는 다리에 별다른 통증도 느껴지지 않았다. 주위를 감싸는 검은 나무들을 바라보고, 그 가느다란 잎을 바라보며 정적과 어둠을 벗삼아 걸어갔다. 숲을 벗어나 야트막한 언덕으로 넘어설 무렵, 달이 나타나면서 그 홀림은 깨졌다. 이유는 모르겠지만 달은 낮게 떠 있었다. 공을 살짝 하늘로 던지면 닿을 듯한 높이였다. 슬슬 마을들이 나타나고 있었다. 다리가 저려와서 중간 중간 버스 정류소에 앉아 10여분간 눈을 감고 있었다. 새벽 3~4시쯤 되어서 도시 안으로 들어갈 수 있었다. 해남이라는 도시는 섬과 같은 느낌이 든다. 주변 지역이 거의 개발이 안 되어 있는 것과는 대조적으로, 갑작스럽게 도시가 솟아난다. 일할 때 자주 들렀던 도시라 눈에 익으리라 생각했지만, 내가 가보았던 곳은 시내 일부였던 터라 막 해남에 도착했을 때는 어디로 가야 하나 막막 했다. 편의점에서 빵으로 끼니를 때우면서, 아르바이트 하시는 분께 여쭈어 보아 시가지 방향을 알 수 있었다. 시가지에서도 찜질방을 여기저기 돌아 보았는데 하나같이 비싼터라 포기했다. 이전에 일하면서 묵었던 숙소 주변에서 저렴한 사우나를 찾았다. 27일이었다. 새해에 맞춰 땅끝으로 가고자 해남에서 이틀을 묵었다. 목표가 없는 삶은 무료했다. 피시방에서 시간을 때우는 것도 한계가 있었다. 생각을 바꿔서 땅끝으로 일단 가기로 했다. 푹 쉬고 출발하려고 사우나에 일찍 들어갔다. 한숨 자고 일어났는데 주인 할머니께서 한 번에 12시간 이상 머물 수 없다고 했다. 하는 수 없이 야밤에 길을 나섰다. 해남에서 땅끝까지는 전부 신작로였다. 아무도 오가지 않는 도로를 건너고, 긴 터널을 지났다. 목포로 가는 길에서 봤던 것처럼, 길가에 고양이 한 마리가 죽어있었다. 이번에도 시체를 풀숲으로 옮겼다. 어제 비가 와서 그런지 풀에는 물기가 남아있었다. 그 이후로는 마을이 나타났다. 새벽이 밝아왔다. 멀리 바다가 보이기 시작했다. 파도 소리가 들리기 시작했다. 땅끝이었다. 아쉽게도 일출은 놓쳤다. 몇몇 친구와 대학교 동기들에게 문자를 보냈다. 그 때는 내가 땅끝에서 2년 군생활을 보내게 되리라고는 상상도 못하던 때였다. 땅끝에는 잘 곳이 없었다. 정확하게는 내가 잘만한 사우나나 찜질방이 없었다. 죄다 여관이었으니까. 아쉽지만 버스를 타고 해남으로 다시 올라가기로 했다. 그나마 종주를 도보로 끝냈으니 다행이랄까. 30여분 정도를 졸다보니 해남에 도착했다. 눈이 내리고 있었다. 남쪽으로 계속해서 걸어온지라 첫 눈이었다. 하룻밤 자고 일어나 횡단을 시작하기로 했다. 목표는 강진이었다. 그러나 걸어서 길을 이동할 수는 없었다. 눈이 너무나도 많이 내렸기 때문이다. 산을 건너야 하는데, 눈이 계속 거세지는 상황이었다. 산을 올라가다가 포기했다. 해남으로 다시 돌아와 궁리를 했다. 며칠 여기서 머무르는 것이 나을지, 아니면 버스를 타고서라도 이동하는 것이 나을지. 그래도 국토종주는 걸어서 끝냈으니, 나머지는 버스를 타고 돌아다녀 볼까 하는 생각이 들었다. 땅끝 출발 전 이틀 정도 해남에서 지낼 때 무료함을 견디기가 힘들었던 것이 영향이 컸다. 지금 생각해보면 아쉬운 노릇이다. 목표를 하나 이루고 나니 지쳤다고 표현해도 맞을 것이다. 어찌되었건, 종주를 끝낸 이후부터는 버스를 이용하게 된다.
