수원-병점 인근까지의 유랑은 목표도 없고, 정처도 없었다. 스마트폰이 없던 시절이었다. 고등학교 때 쓰던 사회과부도와 길가 표지판을 보며, 사람들에게 물어가며 걸었다. 기억을 더듬어가며 주변에 사는 지인과 친구에게 연락을 했다. 그렇게 걸어걸어 수도권의 남쪽까지 도착했다. 거처를 구하지 못해 잠자리가 불편했던 몇몇 경우를 제외하면 전반적으로 기분 좋을 정도로만 피곤한 여정이었다. 다른 식으로 말하자면, 걸어가면서 생각을 할 정도의 거리를 돌아다녔다. 신은 무엇인지, 나는 누구인지, 나는 지금 무엇을 하고 있는 것인지, 세상은 어떠한 방향으로 가야하는지 등등. 지금은 명확하게 기억나지 않는 다양한 화두를 품고 있었지만 내가 천재도 아니고 몇 시간을 혼자서 골몰한다고 답을 찾을 수는 없었다. 하나의 질문에 지칠 때면 다른 질문이 떠올라 생각을 덮어버리고는 했다. 남쪽으로 방향을 돌렸다. 여행을 시작할 때 계획했던 것 중 하나는 낯선 도시에서 살아보는 것이었다. 목표는 광주였다. 역사적 상징성이 있는 도시라 생각해서였다. 도시에 존재하는 집단적 기억을 느끼고 싶다는 마음이 있었다. 당시 학교에 끝물로 남아있던 학생운동의 영향을 일부 받은 면도 있었다. 5.18일에 광주를 갔다 오는 순례 행사가 있던 시절이었다. 당시에는 차비가 부담되어서 참여하지 못했었다. 내 정치적 성향은 고등학교 시절 만난 스승이라 부를 수 있는 선생님에게 영향을 많이 받았다. 보다 정확하게는 중학교 때부터 지니고 있던 성향에 언어를 부여했던 것이 그 선생님이라고 할 수 있겠다. 당시에 그 선생님은 안성에서 교편을 잡고 계셨다. 한신대 도서관에서 쪽잠을 자고 나서 안성으로 이동했다. 안성까지는 9시간을 걸었다. 오산 인근을 지날 때 있었던 일이 기억이 난다. 초로의 남성이 길을 가던 나에게 돈을 빌려달라고 말을 걸었다. 부산에서 올라왔는데, 친구가 다쳐서 왔다가 지갑을 잃어버렸다고 했다. 사기일 가능성이 다분했다. 그러나 당시의 나는 호구였다. 일단 인간은 믿어야 한다는 마음이 컸다. 가능한 범위 내에서는 내 원칙을 지키고 싶었다. 내가 이 사람을 무시하고 가면 뭔가 큰일이 날 것 같은 두려움도 컸다. 비상금으로 모아뒀던 쌈짓돈을 꺼내 6만원을 빌려줬다. 초로의 남성은 6만원을 받더니 다른 말을 걸기 시작했다. 자기가 불 속에 있는 아이를 구해주기 위해 뛰어 들었고, 그 아이는 조막손으로 살아났는데 공부해서 자기를 보살피겠다고 다짐하고, 자기가 부산 지역에서 사람들을 도와주고 있고, 신심도 돈독해서 천주교에서 상당히 높은 직위에 계신 분들이 은총을 내려준 묵주를 가지고 있고, 불 속에 뛰어든 바람에 다리에 큰 상처가 있는데 이 때문에 거동이 불편하다는 등등 가만히 이야기를 듣다보니까 돈 더 달라는 이야기였다. 물론 나는 호구새끼였던지라 4만원을 더 '빌려줬다'. 정작 나 자신은 밥을 얻어먹고, 밖에서 잤음에도 불구하고 말이다. 초로의 남성은 나중에 돌려주겠다면서 계좌를 받아갔다. 나는 안성까지 가는 길 내내 내가 잘한 걸까? 멍청한 짓을 한 걸까?를 고민했다. 선생님은 이야기를 듣더니 껄껄 웃었다. 그럼 그게 사기지 뭐겠냐. 나는 얼굴이 빨개졌다. 선생님은 자기라면 당연히 주지 않을 것이라고 했다. 그러면서 지금의 네 처지에서 10만원이라는 돈이 선뜻 내어줄 수 있는 금액이냐고 물었다. 나는 아니라 답했다. 선생님은 돕고자 하는 마음 자체는 그르지 않다고 말했다. 허나 도와주는 방법이 돈을 빌려주는 것만 있는 것은 아니라 하셨다. 예를 들면, 경찰서로 가서 도움을 요청하는 것은 어땠겠냐고 물었다. 하나같이 타당한 이야기였다. 나는 더 부끄러웠다. 하지만 선생님은 그런 서투름이 보기 좋다고 말했다. 함께 지리산을 올랐던 고등학교 1학년 때처럼 술잔을 나누었다. 다음 날은 천안으로 이동했다. 다행히 만날 수 있는 사람이 있었다. 문제는 약속 시간까지 걸어서 가기가 요원하다는 점이었다. 5시간 정도를 걷다가 시간에 맞추고자 하는 수 없이 지하철을 이용했다. 계속해서 걸었으면 2~3시간은 걸렸을 거리를 순식간에 도착하는 모습을 보면서 바퀴의 위대함을 실감했다. 저녁을 얻어먹고, 그 날의 잠자리를 구하기 위해 단국대 미대로 걸어갔다. 자정이 넘어 도시는 어두웠다. 가죽 점퍼를 입은 초로의 아주머니가 '학생 쉬다가'라고 속삭였다. 그 나지막한 목소리에 소름이 돋았다. 괜찮다고 답한 후 황급하게 자리를 떴다. 비가 내리기 시작했다. 우비로는 비를 다 막을 수 없었다. 단대 미대에 도착했을 때는 몸이 으슬으슬 떨렸다. 다행히 로비에는 난로가 있었다. 수평 의자를 끌어모아 잠자리를 만들었다. 몸을 말리기 위해 생선 굽듯이 계속해서 자세를 바꿔야 했기에 제대로 자지는 못했다. 몸 상태를 챙겨야 할 필요가 있었기에 다음 날에는 주변 찜질방에 들어가서 주말을 보냈다. 식사는 마트에서 산 빵 3개와, 선생님의 사모님께서 챙겨주셨던 비상식량으로 때웠다. 푹 쉰터라 월요일에 공주까지는 한 번에 걸어갈 수 있었다. 일기에는 천안-남천안-도장-소정-행정-전의-영당-양곡-금사-도신-덕학-가산-송학-유계-청룡-금흥동-신관동-공주대라고 적혀 있다. 시간은 12시간 정도. 가지고 있던 사회과부도에 천안 지역과 공주 지역이 서로 다른 장으로 연결되어 있기에 거리를 착각했었다. 일직선으로 뻗은 평지가 줄어들고, 굽이굽이 돌아가야 하는 산길이 늘어난 것도 시간이 오래 걸린 한 요인이었다. 그러나 기분 좋은 하루였다. 도시에서 벗어나면서 길가의 꽃들이 많이 보였다. 주변에 사람이 없는지라 심심하면 혼자서 노래를 부르며 걸었다. 중간에 농사짓는 부부에게 길을 묻다가 새참을 얻어먹었다. 꽃을 보고 계시던 고운 할머니와 잠시 담소를 나누기도 했다. 날이 어두워져 손전등을 켜야 했다. 저 멀리서 보이는 도시의 불빛은 반가웠다. 공주대 도서관에서 잠을 청했다. 다음 날은 은행에 들렀다. 즐겨보던 블로그 주인 분께서 후원을 모집했기 때문이었다. 한 사건을 해결하는데 밀도 깊게 관여하고 계셨었다. 당시에는 아는 사람이 없었지만, 지금은 어느 정도 인지도를 얻은 사건이다. 판사 석궁 테러 사건. 다른 말로는 '부러진 화살'이라고 불린다. 사기를 당했을 때와는 다르게 기꺼운 마음으로 돈을 드릴 수 있었다. 그 후, 공주영상대에서 공부를 하는 고등학교 친구를 만나러 동쪽으로 이동했다. 헤이 워킹 보이, 걷는 소년! 장난끼는 여전한 친구였다. 이제와서 돌이켜보면 내가 나온 고등학교가 지역 내에서 위세가 낮은 학교였기에, 정작 여행 당시에는 만날 수 있는 친구들이 꽤나 있었다. 대학 진학을 안 하거나 지방대로 간 친구들이 태반이었으니까. 친구네 집에서 이틀을 보내고 대전으로 출발했다. 날씨를 보아하니 비가 올 것 같았다. 금강 인근을 건널 때쯤부터 비가 오기 시작했다. 비가 오면 피로는 배가 되었다. 대전에서 만난 게임 모임 형에게는 폐를 많이 끼쳤다. 돌이켜보면 카이스트에서 박사 과정을 밟고 계셨던 것 같다. 바쁜 시간을 내주셨는데, 정작 나는 당시 게임 모임 내 일을 처리한다고 늦게까지 기다리게 했다. 여행을 다니면서 많은 사람들에게 신세를 졌다. 그 중에는 제대로 감사를 표현하지도 못한 채 시간이 지나 인연이 끊어져 버린 사람들이 태반이다. 돌이켜보면 지금도 마찬가지인 것 같다. 그런 일들은 많이 후회가 된다. 누군가를 도와주는데 별다른 거리낌이 없는 것은 그런 기억들 때문이기도 하다. 그런 돌려줄 수 없는 선의와, 돌려받을 것을 기대하지 않는 선의로 사람이 살아가는 것 같다는 생각을 한다. 대전이 생각보다 커서 빠져나가는데 시간이 오래 걸렸다. 계룡으로 진입하는 길에 들어섰을 때는 벌써 오후 4시가 넘어가고 있었다. 빠른 길을 찾다가 고속도로를 따라 걸었다. 한참을 걷는데 뒤에서 사이렌이 울렸다. 고속도로 순찰대였다. 고속도로를 사람이 걸을 수 없다는 걸 그 때 알았다. 덕분에 계룡시 입구까지는 순찰차를 얻어타고 이동했다. 그래도 계룡시내에 도착한 것은 땅거미가 진 후였다. 오늘은 계룡대에서 잘 생각이었다. 계룡대의 '대'가 대학교의 '대'가 아니라는 사실은 한참을 헤메고서야 알 수 있었다. 하는 수없이 근처에 있던 계룡시청에 기어들어갔다. 아동 음악회가 열리고 있던지라 시청은 부산했다. 몰래 옥상 인근에 침낭을 펴고 누웠다. 아침에 경비 아저씨께 걸려서 혼이 났다. 논산으로 이동했다. 인적은 드물었다. 아침에 화장실에서 옷과 수건을 물빨래 했다. 나뭇가지를 가방에 꼽고 그 위에 빨래한 것들을 매달았다. 가을이 깊어 마르는 속도는 빨랐다. 가을이 깊어가면서 길가의 감도 익어가는 것이 눈에 보였다. 양심에 찔려서 서리를 하지는 않았다. 좀 더 길을 걷다보니 가지가 부러져서 땅에 떨어진 감이 있었다. 옳다꾸나 한 입 베어 물었으나 떫은 감이었다. 논산에는 오후에 도착했다. 시간이 남아 연무까지 이동했다. 마땅히 잘 곳이 없었던터라 파출소를 두들겼다. 다행히 환대를 받을 수 있었다. 컵라면을 얻어 먹으면서 민원을 처리하는 모습을 바라보았다. 지금까지의 여정을 이야기 하는데, 경찰 중 한 분이 원래 목소리와 말투가 그런지 웃으면서 물어보셨다. 여성 같은 느낌이라 부담스럽다는 말도 함께. 으레 있는 일이라 그러려니 했다. 장난 섞인 대화가 오가고, 육군 훈련소가 근처에 있으니 체험 삼아 갔다 오라는 이야기를 들었다. 아침 6시에 전주로 길을 나섰다. 밤에 사고 당하지 말라면서 안전 야광복을 주셨다. 새벽 안개가 상쾌하게 느껴졌다. 길을 걸으면서 육군훈련소를 지나쳐갔다. 3년 뒤 다시 오게 될 곳이었다. 전주까지의 여정은 기록이 뚜렷하지 않다. 친척들이 사는 익산을 들르려다가, 너무 돌아가는 것 같다는 생각에 전주로 직행했다. 삼례를 거쳐 서전주 쪽으로 들어갔다. 노-사 체육대회를 하는 곳에서 점심을 얻어먹었다. 아주머니들이 행색을 보더니 떡과 수육을 싸주었다. 전북대 근처에 도착했을 때는 이미 밤이었다. 12시까지 전북대 도서관에서 선잠을 자다가 밖으로 쫓겨났다. 두어 시간 정도 피시방에서 쉬다가 다시 남쪽으로 길을 나섰다. 새벽은 추웠다. 새벽 5시가 넘어 편의점에 들어갔다. 파출소에서 얻은 라면을 끓이고, 점심에 얻은 수육을 녹여 먹었다. 편의점에는 소설책을 싼 값에 팔고 있었다. 책이라도 한 두권 챙길까 싶어서 둘러봤다. 편의점 근무를 하던 여성은 청소해야 하니 나가라고 냉정한 표정으로 말을 했다. 시무룩해하며 밖에서 기다렸다. 잠시 후 미안해하더니, 저런 식으로 서 있다가 훔쳐가는 사람이 많아서 의심을 했다고 했다. 그걸로 말이 트여 여행 중인 사정을 이야기했다. 그 여성 분도 전북대에서 특이한 행색을 하고 돌아다니는 나를 봤었다고 얘기했다. 이야기를 듣더니 어차피 방향이 같으니 잠시 편의점에서 몸을 녹이다가 자신이 퇴근하는 8시에 같이 가자고 했다. 덕분에 한 두어시간 따뜻하게 잘 수 있었다. 끝날 때 번호를 교환했으나, 한 두 번 문자가 오고 갔을 뿐이었다. 전주 남부로 이동해서 고등학교 친구들에게 아침을 얻어먹고, 자취방에서 잠을 청했다. 친구들은 얼굴이 많이 타서 알아보기가 힘들다며 웃었다. 타지에서 생활하느라 다들 곤궁한 처지였을 터인데, 여기까지 왔으니 대접을 해야한다면서 다른 사람에게 돈을 빌려 치킨을 사주었다. 그 우악스러움에 며칠 간의 피곤이 금새 녹았다. 지도를 보니 소백산맥이 가로막고 있어, 전주에서 광주를 직행할 수는 없어 보였다. 정읍과 장성을 거쳐 서쪽으로 돌아가고자 했다. 오후가 접어들어 출발했다. 이제는 경관도 비슷하여 주변을 둘러보기보다는 생각을 이어갈 때가 많았다. 처음 여행을 시작할 때는 나에게 주어졌던 것과, 내가 성취한 것 사이를 구분해보고 싶다는 마음이 컸으나 정작 여행을 하면서는 둘을 구분하기가 모호했다. 고등학교 친구들만 하더라도 내가 특정한 가족의 구성원이었기에, 특정한 지역, 특정한 학교를 다니게 되면서 형성된 제약된 가능성 하에서 만남이 이루어졌던 것이다. 여행을 하면서 집에 연락을 먼저 한 적은 없었다. 대부분은 걱정을 견디다 못한 부모님이 먼저 했다. 나는 그 연락이 마뜩치 않았다. 여행을 통해 1차적으로 벗어나 보고 싶었던 것은 가족이었다. 가족으로부터 벗어나고 싶은 마음은 여러가지 이유가 있었으나, 큰 하나는 중학교 3학년 때 접했던 진화심리학의 영향이었다. 부모 개체가 자녀 개체에 대해 갖는 애정과 돌봄을 유전자의 자기 보존/확산 원리로 환원하는 설명은 인상적이었다. 인간의 감정을 세계로부터 자신을 보호하고, 확산하려는 유전자의 반응으로 설명하는 관점은 나와 타인의 감정에 대한 의문으로 이어졌다. 일단은 왜 내 부모님이 나를 사랑하는지가 의문이었다. 1년 정도 이런저런 책을 찾아보고, 친구들과 교류를 통해 자신의 감정을 살펴보면서 설령 유전자로 환원이 된다 할지라도 감정의 가치에 대한 의미 부여는 별개의 차원이라 결론을 내렸다. 그럼에도 불구하고 주변에서 일어나는 일들을 한 편으로는 있는 그대로 느끼면서, 다른 한 편으로는 생물적/기계적 작용의 결과로 보는 이중적인 의식은 오래도록 나에게 자리잡혀 있었다. 그렇기에 가급적이면 태어나면서 나에게 주어진 것에 가까운 관계와 감정보다는, 내가 선택할 수 있는 감정과 관계들을 찾아보고 싶었다. 이제는 가족 또한 고정된 집단이 아니며 그 내에서의 동학도 나의 선택에 따라 달라지는 부분이 있다는 것을, 그리고 모든 부모님이 우리 부모님처럼 좋은 부모이지 않다는 것을 알지만 그 당시에는 나의 영역을 가족 밖에서 찾고 싶다는 마음만이 강했었다. 해가 지고 나서도 한참을 걸었다. 동네에서 보는 것과는 비교도 되지 않는 많은 별들을 볼 수 있었다. 덕분에 다리의 아픔도 잊고 계속해서 걸을 수 있었다. 차들이 계속해서 옆을 지나가는지라 정취에 녹아들기는 힘들었다. 휴게소를 발견했다. 녹두장군 휴게소라는 이름이었다. 우동 한 그릇을 시켜먹었다. 휴게소 아주머니께 사정을 설명드렸다. 휴게소 내 수유실을 빌려서 잠에 들었다. 새벽같이 일어나 장성으로 이동했다. 휴게소 아주머니들은 장성/정읍의 세부적인 지도를 빌려주셨다. 그러나 중간에 길을 잘못 들어 한참을 돌았다. 호남 터널을 뚫고 가지 않으면 더 먼 길을 돌아야 했다. 하는 수 없이 고속도로에 발을 디뎠다. 결국은 이번에도 순찰대에게 걸려 다시는 고속도로를 이용하지 않겠노라 싹싹 빌고 빠져나왔다. 지도로는 작아 보이는 동네였지만 장성을 통과해서 이동하는데는 오랜 시간이 걸렸다. 대부분은 산지였다. 길은 구불구불했다. 내장산 도립 공원에 백양산이라는 이름을 추가해야 한다는 주장을 내건 플랜카드가 여기저기 걸려있었다. 호수를 따라 나 있는 길을 한참을 걸었다. 12시간 정도를 걸어 장성읍에 도착했다. 이미 해가 진 뒤였다. 다리는 부셔질 것처럼 아팠다. 중간중간 앉아서 쉬는 주기가 빨라졌다. 길고 단단한 나무를 주워 지팡이 삼아 걸었다. 장성읍 근처에서 길가에서 술을 마시던 아저씨와 이야기를 나누고, 차가운 커피를 한 잔 얻어 마셨다. 기왕 이리 된 거 오늘 안에 광주까지 가보기로 마음 먹었다. 손전등을 비춰가며 인도인지 도로인지 구분이 가지 않는 길들을 걸었다. 그래도 광주까지 도착하면 한동안은 걸을 일이 없으리라 생각하니 힘을 낼 수 있었다. 걷는 속도는 매우 느렸다. 살면서 오늘이 가장 오래 걷는 것 같은 마음에 왠지 모를 뿌듯함이 들었다. 한계까지 자신을 몰아쳐보는 감각은 예전부터 좋아했다. 광산구에 접어들었지만 광주 시내와는 또 거리가 있었다. 후들후들 떨리는 무릎을 손으로 붙잡고 걸었다. 경사진 길을 올라갈 때는 네 발로 기었다. 그래도 움직이는 것 외에는 별다른 도리가 없었다. 그런 순간에는 생각이고 사유고 쓸모가 없었다. 단지 몸을 움직일 뿐이었다. 시내의 불빛은 점차 가까워졌다. 드디어 광주라는 생각이 들었다. 그리고 그 때부터 12월 19일까지 광주에서 한 달 반 정도를 지내게 된다.
