여성이 과학을 한다고 하면 많은 사람들은 화학을 떠올립니다. 혹은 생물학 이건 우리나라에서 공대나 자연대에서 그나마 성비가 맞춰지는 학과가 화공이나 화학과인 것이 한 몫 할 것입니다. 특히 약대체제의 변경이후로 안정적 전문직(약사)에 대한 선호가 여자 과학도들 사이에서 높은 편이죠. 또한 여초업계이자 성장산업인 화장품업계로의 진로가 열려있기 때문이기도 할 것이고요. 물론 이런 국내현실 말고도 전세계적으로 여자 과학자의 끝판왕이자 팡테옹에 묻힌 유일한 여성이었던 마담퀴리나 영국의 왕립학회의 여성멤버들 사이에서 가장 메이저한 필드는 바이오 케미스트리와 제네틱스와 같은 화학 생물분야죠. 그런데 최초의 왕립학회 여성회원이 20세기에나 본격적으로 나타났다는 걸 생각하면 그보다 더 이전에 시대적 제약(18~19세기)으로 인해 여성들이 과학에 발자취를 남기기 힘든 시절에 여성 과학자들이 가장 활약한 분야는 수학이었습니다. 현대의 여성은 수학을 못한다는 myth가 만연한 걸 생각하면 여성과학자중에서도 수학자들의 기록을 만날 때 마다 신기하죠. 먼저 직접적으로 수학필드에 큰 업적을 남기지 않았어도 수학에 대한 뛰어난 이해를 바탕으로 업적을 남긴 사람들이 있습니다. 대표적으로는 나이팅게일이나 이제는 사람들에게 너무 유명한 아이슈타인의 아내 말레바가 그러하죠. 말레바는 20세기 사람이긴 하지만, 말레바의 학문에 대한 재능은 매우 뛰어나서, 여자일 뿐만 아니라 장애인으로 태어났음에도 그 시대적 분위기에서 집안이 그녀의 고등교육을 전폭적으로 후원해주었을 정도니까요. 직접적으로 수학으로 이름을 떨친 사람중에서 가장 유명한건 아마 코시 코발레스프카야 방정식의 기여자이자 편미분방정식을 통해 미분학에 큰 기여를 한 소피아가 코발레스프카야가 아닐까 합니다. 19세기에 러시아의 국립과학협회 멤버로 최초로 받아들여지기도 했죠. 소피 제르맹은 탄성연구로 대단히 유명한 학자이며 그 이름을 딴 방정식도 있을 정도지만 동시에 수론에도 뛰어났으며 페르마의 정리에도 기여했다고 알려져있습니다. 당시 여학생을 받아주지 않았던 프랑스 대학의 처우에도 불구하고 자신을 입학시켜주지 않은 대학 수업을 청강생으로 들으며, 홀로 수학해 과학을 공부해 업적을 이룩하였습니다. 이 때문에 프랑스에서는 '조건이 열악하여도 노오오오오력을 통해 성공한 사람'의 대명사로도 유명하다고 합니다. 프로그래밍 언어 ADA라는 이름으로 그 업적을 치하받은 에이다와 에이다의 선생님이었던 서머빌, 에밀리 드 샤를레는 수학자로서 대단한 업적을 남겼다고 평가받지는 않지만 수학적인 사고에 정말 강했으며 그러한 특성으로 인해 프로그래밍언어에서부터 물리학까지 많은 분야에 업적을 남겼습니다. 유독 과거의 여성과학자들이 수학이나 그 관련 필드에 업적을 남긴 이유가 무엇일까요? 혹자는 여성의 섬세한 성격이 수학에 강했으며 특히 수론을 이해하는 데 여학생들이 뛰어났던 걸 보면 여성이 선천적으로 수학적 개념에 친숙해지기 유리하다라는 설명을 하기도 합니다. 또 다른 누군가는 여성의 실험적 증명들을 불신하는 분위기가 사회에 만연했고 또한 여성의 연구를 펀딩하는 사람이 상대적으로 없었으므로 명료성과 글로만 승부할 수 있는 수학필드가 자연스럽게 여성에게 상대적으로 유리한 분야이기 때문이라고 합니다. 좀 흥미로운 설명도 있는데 당대에 수학교사나 과학서에 주석, 해설서에 대한 수요에 공급을 담당한 사람들 중에는 여성이 유독 많았는데 직업적으로 이런 분야가 여성에게 많이 할당되다보니 그나마 수학은 여성도 할 수 있는 학문이라는 인식이 있어 여성수학자나 수학능력을 가진 여성을 길러내는데 도움이 되었다고도 하죠.
