(*본래 감정을 설명할 때에는 affection, emotion, feeling 등을 구별합니다만, 본문에서는 일단 편하게 ‘감정’으로 총칭하겠습니다. 카테고리가 과학과 잡상 사이에서 애매하지만 업적을 위해 의료로 택했습니다. 또한 주지할 점은 제가 심리학전공자는 아니라는 것입니다. 전 정치학을 연구하기 위한 도구로서의 심리학적 방법론을 공부하고 있을 따름입니다. 전문가의 보론 대환영입니다.)  1. 우리는 왜 우울을 겪는 걸까? 저도 가끔 겪긴 합니다만, 타임라인이나 티타임을 보면 우울한 감정을 표현하시는 클러분들을 종종 봅니다. 그 가운데에는 스쳐지나가는 감상처럼 가벼운 우울감을 말하는 분도 계시고, 보다 임상적인 수준, 즉 고질적이고 무력감을 동반하는 우울감을 호소하시는 분도 계십니다. 그런 거 자고 일어나면 싹 사라져버렸으면 좋겠죠. 그런데 궁금함이 생겼습니다. 우리는 왜 우울해하는 걸까요. 특히 여성은 호르몬의 영향으로 남성에 비해, 또 아동에 비해 배에 가까운 빈도로 우울감을 겪는다고 하는데 왜 이렇게 된 걸까요. 2. 어쩌다 생긴 특질인데, 도움이 되어서 남아있다. 사실 ‘왜 우리가 이런 감정을 갖게 되었느냐?’란 질문은 ‘기능의 논리’를 전제로 하고 있습니다. 즉, 어떠한 특질이 어떠한 긍정적 결과를 가져오기 때문에 우리가 그 특질을 갖게 되었을 것이란 생각이죠. 실제로 현대 심리학은 진화이론을 바탕으로, 인간이 감정이라는 특질을 갖게 된 이유를 기능의 논리로 설명합니다. 즉, ‘우리가 특정한 감정을 갖게 된 것은, 그것이 생존 및 번식에 유리했기 때문이다’라는 전제를 세웁니다. 덧붙이자면 이 감정을 처리하는 부분은 대뇌의 아래, 귀의 위쯤에 있는 뇌의 변연계(limbic system)입니다. 변연계는 포유동물이 공통으로 갖고 있고, 같은 대뇌 가운데에서도 25세까지도 성장한다는 전두엽에 비하면 보다 ‘먼저’ 기능적으로 완성되는 부분입니다. 인간 아이의 경우 3세면 변연계가 제 기능을 한다고 합니다. 특정한 감정을 처리하는 부분이 뇌의 다른 고차원적 사고 기능에 비해 먼저 발달하고 인간뿐만 아니라 포유류 전반에게 존재한다는 사실은 한편으로는 감정은 포유동물이 일정수준 보편적으로 갖고 있는 특질이라는 것을, 다른 한편으로는 그 발달과정이 진화적이었음을 뒷받침하는 증거가 됩니다. 즉, 감정의 원인을 기능적으로 생각하는 게 이상한 건 아니라는 얘기죠.  대충 저 파란 게 변연계입니다. 멍멍이한테도 있어요. 파충류한텐 없고요. 3. 감정은 생존에 도움이 된다. 갖기 다른 감정들이 살아남고 번식하는 데 도움이 되어서 우리에게 남아있는 기능이 되었다는 것은 얼추 그럴 듯한 얘기입니다만, 그렇다면 우울도 우리에게 뭔가 도움이 되어야 합니다. 다른 감정의 경우 이 논리가 꽤 직관적으로 쉽게 이해됩니다. 핵심은 '감정은 생존에 도움이 되는 행동을 하게끔 강력히 유도한다'입니다. 예를 들어 ‘두려움’은 우리가 두려워하는 대상을 피하게끔 해서 우리의 생존 가능성을 높입니다. 두려움과 연관된 대표적인 진화의 근거는 ‘뱀에 대한 공포/혐오’입니다. 연구에 따르면 뱀에 대한 공포/혐오는 문화권을 가리지 않으며, 뱀에 대한 사전 학습이 없는 유아시절부터 발생합니다. 뱀을 피하는 것이 생존에 있어서 너무 중요했기에, 아예 뇌가 그와 비슷하게 생긴 것들을 피하는 방식으로 작동하도록 미리 유전자 단계에, 인류 보편적으로 남아있다는 뜻입니다. (참고로 이 기능은 완벽히 정밀하지 않아서 대충 뱀처럼 생긴 것들–길고 구불구불 움직이는 것들-을 인간은 대체로 혐오스럽게 봅니다. 지렁이나 애벌레, 실 같은 기생충은 물론 현미경으로 본 정자 같은 것도 말이죠.)  아, 슬리데린도. 쾌감도 마찬가지입니다. 쾌감은 우리로 하여금 그것을 주는 대상을 계속 하게끔 유도합니다. (동기, 욕구의 부여) 대표적인 예가 ‘섹스’입니다. 결과적으로 보면 ‘섹스는 번식을 위해 있는 것’입니다만 사실 우리는 번식을 위해서가 아니라 ‘쾌감과 정서적 만족감을 얻기 위해’ 섹스를 합니다. 번식은 만족 추구의 부수적 효과지요. 아주 단순하게 풀면 쾌감이 없는 쪽보다 있는 쪽이 더 번식행위를 자주 시도하게 되고, 그 결과 번식률이 높아져서 있는 쪽이 더 살아남습니다. 그래서 우리는 쾌감이 동반된 번식행위를 하는 종이 되었습니다. 이 역시 완벽하게 정밀하지 않아서, 인간은 물론 심지어 보노보와 같은 다른 유인원이나 개까지도 ‘유사성행위’를 하지요. 4. 그래서 우울은 대체 어떤 쓸모가 있는 거냐? 우울이라는 것은 슬픔, 의욕상실 등으로 구성된 복잡한 감정입니다. 우울 자체를 단일 감정으로 보지 않고, 복합된 감정이 생활에 심각한 장애를 주는 정도에 이르렀을 때만 ‘우울증’으로 칭하는 경우도 있습니다. 그래서 우울은 그 이익을 따지기가 다른 감정에 비해 복잡합니다. 일단 고통스럽기 때문에 겪는 입장에서는 무슨 이익이 있다고 생각하기도 어렵지요. 하지만 ‘생존에 해가 되는 특질이라면 번식에 실패해 도태되었을 것'이라는 전제 하에 학자들은 몇 가지 설을 제기합니다. 그 가운데 가장 잘 알려진 것은 ‘슬픔’의 기능입니다. 슬픔은 우울함을 이룬다고 할 수도 있고, 혹은 우울함과 매우 가까운 감정이라고도 할 수 있는데요, 슬픔의 경우 ‘상실’의 경험에서 촉발되기 때문에 우리로 하여금 ‘잃어버린 것’을 수복하고 싶어지게끔 만든다고 합니다. 우리가 뭔가에 대해 슬퍼하는 경우는 기본적으로 우리에게 있어서 중요한 것을 잃어버렸을 때지요. 또한 상실의 기억과 슬픔이라는 감정의 결합은 하나의 학습이 되어서, 두 번 다시 중요한 것을 잃어버리지 않도록 노력하게끔 하는 기제로도 작동을 하고요. 우울함도 비슷한 설명이 있는데, 이 감정으로부터 벗어나기 위해서 ‘쾌감을 주는 행동’을 하게 만든다는 겁니다. 맛있는 음식(진화적으로 생존에 필요한 음식)을 먹거나, 다른 사람을 만나서 대화와 놀이를 하거나(사회적 유대의 강화) 하는, 우울함을 벗어나기 위한 행위들은 대개 ‘생존에 도움이 되는’ 행위들입니다.  나 우울하다냥. 돌봐라냥. 이러한 이득은 ‘당사자로 하여금 이익행위를 하게 만드는’ [개인적 유형의 이득]인데요, 우울의 경우 그뿐만이 아니라 ‘타인으로 하여금 당사자에게 이익이 되는 행위를 하게 만드는’ [사회적 유형의 이득]으로 풀이되는 부분 역시 있습니다. 우울함에 빠지면 무기력한 모습이 표현으로 나타나고, 슬플 경우 눈물 흘리며 우는 모습이 표현으로 나타나게 됩니다. 이를 다른 사람이 보면 ‘거울 뉴런’을 통해 비슷한 감정을 공유하게 되고 동정적, 그러니까 우울감을 겪는 당사자에게 호의적인 태도를 보이게 되지요. 이는 경쟁자나 공격자의 적의를 누그러뜨리는 기능을 하기도 하며, 특히 산후우울의 경우 파트너로 하여금 육아를 분담하게 만드는 신호로 기능한다는 설명도 있습니다. 이러한 사회적 기능은 첫 문단에서 언급한 ‘여성이 남성이나 아동에 비해 자주 우울감을 느끼는 특징’의 이유로도 제기되고 있습니다. 5. 우울증, 그리고 현대 사회 그런데 이러한 설명들은 모두 ‘진화적’인 것들입니다. 그래서 우울함이 덜 고통스럽고 또 빨리 해소되면서 부수적인 긍정적 효과를 가져올 수 있다는 것 역시 진화적 관점, 즉, 현대가 아니라 과거 인류가 진화과정을 거치던 시기의 생활환경 및 사회구조를 두고 생각해볼 필요가 있습니다. 흔히 제시되는 인류의 진화적 환경은 수렵이 중심이거나 농경을 갓 시작한 수준의, 적은, 아주 많아야 150명이 안 되는 혈연집단으로 구성된 씨족사회였다는 것입니다. 이 환경에서 한 개인은 자신이 속한 집단의 사람들과 무슨 일이든 무리지어 하고, 언제나 다른 사람이 필요한 가까이에 있으며, 그 사람들은 모두 나를 알고 나도 아는 사람들입니다. 이런 환경에서라면 누가 슬퍼하면 바로 달래줄 사람이 있었을 테고, 집단 내에서 싸움이나 경쟁도 아주 심각한 상황까지는 치닫지 않았을 것이며, 우울함을 해소하기 위한 수단은 여럿이 함께 하는 단체행동밖에 없었으므로 당연히 결속이 다져졌을 터입니다. 하지만 현대사회의 환경은 그와 전혀 다르지요. 우리는 지극히 개인화되어 우리를 모르는 사람들 사이에 살고 있고, 아파도 관심 하나 가져줄 사람 없이 고립된 경우가 많으며, 집단 내 경쟁은 인생을 걸 정도로 치열하고, 외모, 성격 등의 사소한 ‘결점 아닌 결점’이 누구에게 보살핌 받아 해결되거나 넘겨질 수 있는 문제가 아닌 매우 치명적인 패배요인이자 사회적으로 무시당하는 요인으로 작동합니다. 사회는 물론 부모와 같이 가까운 사람들이 개인을 대하는 태도도 다릅니다. 과거 진화기의 생활에서 개인에게 요구되는 것이 건강, 집단의 규칙에 대한 순응, 단체 행동에의 적극적 동참, 번식 같이 단조로운 것이었다면 지금은 그보다 까마득히 어려운 성취를 기준으로 잡고 개인을 평가합니다. 그래서 우리는 우리의 먼 조상들에 비해 훨씬 인정받고 사랑받기 어려운 세상을 살고 있습니다. 이런 세상은 우울감을 갖기는 쉽게 만들고, 우울감이 가진 긍정적 기능은 좀처럼 발휘되기 어렵게 만듭니다. 놀이도 혼자서 할 수 있는 것들이 훨씬 쉽고 가까이에 많이 있지요. 심지어 고칼로리에 당분이 든 음식이 넘치는 지금 우울해서 뭔가를 먹으면 건강악화로 이어지고요. 우울증이 현대질병이라는 얘기가 괜히 생긴 것이 아닙니다. (*그렇다고 수렵사회 유토피아/현대 디스토피아설을 주장하는 것은 아니 오해 없으시길 바랍니다.) 6. 같이, 빨리 벗어납시다. 우울증의 기능에 대한 설명 가운데 ‘사회적 이득’의 부분은, 우울감 자체가 사회적-관계적인 성질의 감정이며 따라서 사회적-관계적인 차원에서 다루어져야 한다는 암시를 줍니다. 이 사회적-관계적인 ‘다룸’은 당사자와 주변인 모두가 같이 하는 것입니다. 그래야 '관계'지요. 우울한 당사자는 감정을 극복하기 위해 더 적극적으로 누군가를 만나 즐거운 대화와 경험을 나누려 해야 하고, 주변 사람들은 거울뉴런의 기능을 충분히 발휘해서 관심을 가져주고 도와줘야 합니다. (기능을 당위로 치환해버리는 오류 논법입니다만 너그러이 양해해주시길.) 특히 임상적으로 심각한 우울증의 경우 스스로 움직일 의욕이 떨어진 무기력 상태가 동반되고는 합니다. ‘진짜 우울증 환자는 자살할 힘이 없어서 자살도 못한다’는 말도 그래서 나온 것입니다. 이럴 때는 주변에서 찾아가고, 대화하고 또 만나고 전문가의 도움을 받을 기회를 계속 만들어주는 수밖에 없어요. 사회가 도와줘야 한다는, 정확히 말하면 가까이에 있는 사람들이 도와줘야 한다는 말이 진리입니다. 그러다 가끔씩 무기력이 조금 덜해지면 당사자 스스로도 의욕을 좀 더 내야겠죠. 우울한 우리들이여, 우울함은 스스로에게는 뭔가 하라고 있는, 남들에게는 뭔가를 해달라고 요청하는 감정이라 합니다. 그러니 우울하면 우울하다고 얘기하고, 대화하고, 또 그런 사람 만나고 도와줍시다. 하고 싶어지는 것을 더 적극적으로 하자는 거죠. 그렇게 해서 같이, 우울감으로부터 빨리 벗어나는 게 우울함을 긍정적으로 소화해내는 길입니다.(우리에겐 홍차넷이 있잖아요? 탐라에 철판 깔고 뻘소리도 하고 오프도 자주 있고... 기승전 홍차넷 칭찬이군요. 어흠. 어흠.) 참고문헌 1.
