물리적인 긴 거리를 직접 달리는 것을 일반적으로 알려진 마라톤의 정의라고 할 수 있을 것입니다. 그러나 어떤 사람들은 하룻밤이 걸리는 긴 여정의, 그 일반적인 정의와는 좀 다른 마라톤을 매년 준비합니다. 바로 메시에 마라톤입니다. 18세기 프랑스에 살았던 샤를 메시에는 당시 태동하기 시작한 혜성 관측을 업으로 삼은 천문학자였습니다. 그러나 그에게 혜성 발견에 대한 업적이 있기는 해도, 정작 그의 이름이 아직까지 전해 내려오게 된 가장 중요한 업적은 바로 메시에 목록이라고 부르는 리스트가 되었습니다. 메시에 목록은 딥스카이라고 부르는, 별을 제외한 천체들. 은하, 성단, 성운 등등에 숫자를 붙여 나열한 리스트인데요, 원래는 혜성 관측에 방해되는 희끄무레한 것들을 따로 모아서 제외시키기 위한 목록이라고 하죠. 후대에 추가된 것까지 합쳐서 약 110개의 딥스카이 천체가 메시에 목록에 포함되어 있습니다. 일반에 잘 알려진 메시에 천체로는 게성운(M1), 안드로메다 은하(M31), 플레이아데스 성단(M45) 등이 있습니다. 앞에 M을 쓰고 뒤에 숫자를 붙인 것이 메시에 천체의 형식명이죠. NGC목록과 더불어 별 보는 사람들에게는 중요한 딥스카이 목록입니다. 현대에 들어와서 아마추어 천문을 취미로 즐기는 사람들은 이 메시에 목록을 하룻밤 사이에 가능한 많이 관측하는 대회를 열게 됩니다. 매년 춘분을 전후해서 말이죠. 춘분을 대회 개최 시기로 잡는 것은 대부분의 메시에 천체를 볼 수 있는 때가 공교롭게도 이 즈음이기 때문입니다. -저녁부터 다음날 새벽까지. 지구 자전으로 인해 밤하늘은 약 180도 움직이게 됩니다. 하지만 지평선 부근의 광해나 산(천체관측을 하기 좋은 곳은 대부분 산등성이쯤입니다.), 여명 등으로 인해서 하룻동안 일년간 볼 수 있는 모든 천체를 관측하는 건 불가능합니다.- 하여튼, 이 대회도 당연히 경쟁이 있으니까, 나름대로의 전략이 필요합니다. 서쪽 지평선 가까이에 있는 것들을 가장 먼저 관측한다던가, 좌표만 입력하면 자동으로 찾아주는 프로그램은 당연히 쓸 수가 없으므로 파인더(주 망원경 위에 달린 보조 망원경)로 메시에 천체를 찾는 연습을 한다던가 뭐 그런 거죠. 여담으로 구경이 큰 망원경들을 대포라고 부르기도 합니다. 카메라 렌즈 큰 것들을 그런 식으로 부르는 것처럼요. 그렇게 큰 망원경들이 모인 모습은 꽤 장관입니다. 왜 대포라는 별명을 붙였는지 이해될 정도로요. 3월의 밤은 아직 춥습니다. 대회를 여는 곳은 더 춥죠. 춥고, 배고프고, 졸립죠. 붉은색 손전등으로 성도를 비춰봐도, 깨알같은 글씨들은 잘 보이지도 않습니다. 그런데 그런 것보다 별 보는 사람들이 더 싫어하는 건 구름입니다. 달 같은 밝은 광원입니다. 비가 오면 그날은 그냥 꽝이죠. 별 보기 좋은 날들은 의외로 일년에 며칠 안 되거든요. 그래서 날이 좋으면 하늘을 보게 되고, 해지기를 기다리게 됩니다. 메시에 마라톤은 그런 사람들을 위한 축제라고도 할 수 있겠죠. 랑크는 메시에 마라톤을 다녀온 후기(제가 쓴 건 아닙니다.)와, 올해 메시에 마라톤을 주최한 곳 중 한 곳의 일정표입니다. 혹 관심 있으신 분들께는 참고가 되길 바랍니다. 부끄럽지만 전 북극성이 어디있는지도 모릅니다. 밤하늘을 올려다보면 모든 별이 똑같아 보이죠. 큰곰자리, 페가수스 등을 찾으려 해도 찾을 수가 없습니다.
저 같은 사람이 보면 그저 반짝이는 하나의 별일 뿐이겠지만, 아는 사람의 눈에는 추위와 잠을 잊을 정도로 매력적인 존재가 되는 군요.
