1. 사람들은 요즘 세대가 역대급으로 책을 안읽는다고 한탄해요. 그런데 쓰기는 어떨까요? 한 10년 전 정도부터를 기점으로 요즘 세대는 지난 세대와 감히 비교를 불허할 정도로 많이 [쓰는] 세대가 되었어요. 저희 아빠가 일평생 읽은 활자가 저보다 못해도 두 배 이상 많겠지만 쓰기의 경우라면 제가 지난 10년 간 쓴 글자가 그분이 지난 30년 간 쓴 것보다 많을 지도 몰라요. 아니, 아마 훨씬 많을 거라고 생각해요. 질은 논외로 치더라두요 -_-; 전 대학교 들어가기 전엔 글쓰기 훈련이란 걸 (일기 쓰기 정도를 빼면) 한 번도 제대로 받아본 기억이 없어요. 있었을지도 모르지만 기억이 안나는 걸 보면 아마도 극미량이었을 테고, 그나마도 느릿느릿 쓰느라 재미도 없었을 거예요. 그러다가 고등학생 시절 (00~03년) 정도부터 서서히 키보드로 뭔가를 쓰는 일이 늘어났고 대학 입학 이후로는 키보드의 힘을 빌어 글을 쓰는 빈도/양이 모두 폭발적으로 늘었어요. 물론 당시 싸이월드에 써재끼던 글들의 수준이야 참혹하다는 말로도 부족하지만 (...), 모 스타크래프트 게이머의 가르침처럼 물량 앞에는 장사 없어요. 많이 쓰다보면 조금씩 좋아져요. 00년대 초중반을 돌이켜보면 웹상에 작성된 문서들은 대개 크게 신뢰하기 어려운 내용들이거나, 문장력이 썩 좋지 않거나, 글의 구성이랄게 없거나, 뭐 그런 경우가 대부분이었던 것 같아요. 나이가 어려서 그랬던 것 아닌가 하고 의심해볼 수도 있는데, 신기하게도 어리거나 젊은 분들 뿐 아니라 나이든 분들이 쓴 글들조차도 별로 좋진 않았었어요. 필시 평생 꾸준히 신문을 읽었던 분들이었을 텐데도요. 그분들은 읽어본 경험은 많았어도 써본 경험은 적어서 그랬던 게 아닌가 싶어요. 키보드+인터넷 등장 이전의 공론장이란 소수의 재능있는 글쓸러들이 언론사 등에 들어가서 전업으로 글을 [쓰고], 그걸 글쓰기 훈련을 받아본 적 없는 대부분의 미디어 소비자들이 [읽고], 그에 대해 자기들끼리 구두로 [이야기] 하는 형식이었어요. 따라서 자기가 직접 무언가를 쓸 기회도 별로 없었거니와 있었다 하더라도 굳이 쓰지 않고도 충분히 이 놀이에 참여할 수 있었지요. 이 구도가 익숙했던 미디어 소비자들은 기술의 발달에 힘입어 갑작스레 '글을 쓸 공간과 권한'이 주어졌을 때 프로글쓸러들처럼 글을 쓰는 건 그렇게 해 본 적이 없으니 잘 못하겠고 그냥 평소에 구두로 이야기하던 느낌 그대로 웹 상에서 글을 썼던 게 아닌가 싶어요. 하지만 시간이 갈수록 상황이 좋아졌어요. 물량에는 장사 없잖아요. 웹질을 10년 했으면 글빨이 조금이라도 느는 게 당연해요. 하물며 90년대생 이후라면 한글을 뗄 때부터 웹에 글을 쓰는게 가능했으니 모르긴 몰라도 제가 고등학생-대학생이던 시절보다 훨씬 더 연습이 잘 된 상태일 거예요. 그래서 그런지 이젠 글쓰기를 전업으로 삼는 글쓸러의 작업물 (뉴스 기사라든가)을 제하고도 웹에서 읽어볼 만한 글을 찾는 건 어렵지 않아요. 홍차넷도 있고 피지알도 있고, 재밌는 블로그도 많고, 페이스북만해도 쏠쏠히 읽을 만한 것들을 일반인들이 만들어내요. 내용적인 측면에서야 말할 것도 없고 구성/문장력 면에서도 10년 전보다 월등히 나아졌어요. 다가오는 세대는 현재의 조건을 토대삼아 더욱더 가열차게 무언가를 웹에 써댈 테고, 그렇게 우리들의 평균 글빨력은 상승할 거라고 믿어요. 2. 서양사는 잘 모르겠고 중국사는 글을 어디에 썼냐를 기준으로 문명이 큼직하게 변했어요. 뼈에 쓰다가 대나무에 쓰게 되면서 글쓸러의 수가 크게 늘었고, 그게 제자백가의 시대를 불러온 중요한 원인 중 하나라고 해요. 남송대에 들어서면서 상업의 발달로 종이값이 싸지고, 그 싼 종이에다가 글을 대량으로 프린팅하기 시작하면서 전체 인구 중 글을 쓰는 이의 수가 크게 늘어났어요. 그 결과가 성리학의 탄생이라고 해요. 그래서 제 분야의 사가들은 얼마나 많은 사람들이 읽느냐보다 얼마나 많은 사람들이 쓰느냐를 더 중요하게 보는 경우가 많아요 (물론 대개의 경우 시차를 두고 두 가지가 같이 가지만요). 한 가지 또 중요한 사실은 자기 자신이 글을 쓰는 이의 독해력/독해경험은 그렇지 않은 이들의 독해력/독해경험과 판연히 다르다는 거예요. 당연한 거지만 직접 쓰지 않을 때는 생각하지 못했던 관점이 생기고, 보다 더 깐깐한 기준으로 글을 보게 돼요. 일반인이 메탈리카를 들을 때와 (비록 아마츄어 수준일지라도) 매일 기타 연습을 쉬지 않는 이가 들을 땐 그 느낌이 사뭇 다르지 않겠어요? 마치 동업자의 작업물을 검토해주는 것 같은 느낌이 들 거예요. (물론 기타 안쳐본 사람이 더 잘 들을 수도 있어요. 제 말은 '느낌이 다를' 거라는 거예요) 매일매일 어딘가에 짧게라도 글을 쓰는 재가 (在家) 글쓸러가 계속 늘어나서 상당수가 그렇게 쓰기 생활을 즐기게 되면 어떻게 될까요. 웹에서 잘 훈련된 재가在家글쓸러 + 글쓰기 경험으로 잘 훈련된 독자가 늘어나면 결국 글쓰기를 전업으로 삼는 직군은 대격변을 겪지 않을까요. 아예 사라지거나, 축소된 형태로 살아남거나, 아니면 예상치 못한 형태로 변화하거나. 그렇게 우리의 활자 생활은 미증유의 시대에 돌입하게 될지도 몰라요. 석기시대, 철기시대에 이어 쓰기시대가 도래했으니 21세기가 그 기점이었다라고 미래의 누군가가 회고할지도 모를 일이지요. 아 만약 정말 그렇게 서술해준다면 열라 행복할 듯. 쓰기 시대가 도래하긴 했는데... 커뮤니티나 SNS에 넘쳐나는 그런 글쓰기로는 질적인 향상에 한계가 있다고 생각합니다. 그리고 너도나도 글을 쓰다보니까 상대적으로 평가하는 눈도 낮아져서 예전같으면 골방에서 혼자 몇년은 더 갈고 닦아야 할 실력도 온라인에서는 글빨 좋다고 칭찬을 받습니다. 그러면 자연히 안주하거나 매너리즘에 빠지기 쉽구요. 허들이 낮은 거대한 마이너리그가 생겼다는 면에서는 긍정적이지만 정말 읽을 만한 글들은 이전 세대의 환경에서 계속 많이 나올거라고 생각합니다.
