1. 왜 <나의 투쟁>인가 서아시아의 IS에서 시작된 난민의 이동과 과격이슬람단체의 테러가 연일 뉴스에 오르내리고 있습니다. 개인적으로 난민과 관련하여 시민단체에서 인턴으로 활동하면서 난민을 직접 만나고, 그들과 함께 이야기를 나누면서 한국에서의 난민 또한 멀지 않은 이야기라고 느끼기도 했습니다. 하지만 인터넷 댓글이나 대부분의 한국 여론은 난민에 대해 우호적이지는 않은 듯 합니다. 사실 '난민'이라는 개념 자체가 생소하기도 하고 대부분의 한국 사람들은 '우리도 먹고 살기 힘든데 난민 도와줄 여유가 어딨냐' 정도의 입장으로 정리 될 듯 하네요(이러한 난민과 그 인정조건에 대해서도 한번 글 쓰고 싶은데 오늘은 일단 넘어가겠습니다). 이러한 타자에 대한 거부감은 '낯섦'에서 오는 자연스러운 반응으로 이해할 수도 있습니다. 하지만 일부는 이러한 단순한 반감을 넘어 난민과 중국 및 동남아시아 외국인 노동자에 대한 적개심과 혐오를 표시하기도 합니다. 이러한 민족공동체의 인식과 외국인에 대한 반감은 단순히 한국의 문제만이 아니라 이제 미국 공화당 정식 대선후보가 된 도널드 트럼프에서 보듯 장기적인 세계경기침체에 따른 전 세계적인 분위기라고 생각합니다. 트럼프는 대놓고 이야기하지 못하는 미국인들의 이러한 속마음을 대신해주면서 인기를 끄는 면도 있구요. 이러한 기류속에서 작년 가을, 아돌프 히틀러의 <나의 투쟁>이 출판 금지가 해제되면서 국내에서도 재출간되기 시작했다는 소식을 접했습니다. 민족공동체가 가지는 힘에 가장 강하게 호소하여 엄청난 전쟁을 일으킨 히틀러의 정치적 바탕이 된다는 이 책에 대한 궁금증이 일었습니다. 미국이나 영국(자신들은 아니라고 하지만)이 추구하고 있는 고립주의, 순혈주의 움직임이 결코 히틀러의 파시즘과 무관하지 않다고 생각합니다. 엄밀히 말하면 왜곡된 헤겔의 정치사상과 신성로마제국, 프로이센의 비스마르크, 1차 세계대전을 통해 탄생한 파시즘이 그 뿌리라고까지 할 수 있을 것 입니다. 과연 히틀러는 어떻게 게르만 민족주의를 불러일으킬 수 있었을까. 적을 알고 나를 알아야 위태롭지 않다는데 일단 그 책을 직접 읽어보고 싶었습니다. 2. 히틀러에 대한 단상 아돌프 히틀러. 게르만 민족주의를 주창하는 나치당을 이끌고 제 2차 세계대전을 일으킨 전범. 반유대주의, 인종차별주의를 내세워 수많은 유대인을 학살. 당시 소련을 중심으로 유행하던 공산주의를 숙적으로 여기고 양면전쟁의 위험을 감수하고 결국 연합국에 이어 소련과도 전쟁을 벌임. 모스크바를 함락시키지 못하고 동부전선에서 엄청난 피해를 입고 서부전선에서 노르망디 상륙작전으로 결정타를 입음. 패전이 확실시 되자 베를린 벙커에서 자살. 사실 출생은 오스트리아인. 이정도가 제가 <나의 투쟁>을 읽기 전 알고 있던 히틀러에 대한 짧은 정보입니다. 이 책을 읽기전 궁금했던 점은 어떻게 2차 세계대전이라는 엄청난 전쟁을 벌일 정도로 독일 국민의 지지를 얻을 수 있었는지와 조금만 생각한다면 쉽게 알수 있는 동, 서부전선으로 나뉘어진 양면전쟁의 위험성을 감수하고 끝내 패망의 선택이 된 소련침공을 결정했는가 하는 것이었습니다. 먼저 히틀러가 독일 민족주의노동자당(나치스)을 조직하고 이런 엄청난 전쟁을 계획하고 수행하도록 독일 국민을 이끈 것에 대해 이 책은 단서를 제공하고 있습니다. <나의 투쟁>은 한국 번역본으로 1000 페이지가 넘는 거대한 분량의 히틀러 정치선전 책입니다. 이 책은 히틀러가 바이마르 공화국을 무너뜨리려 했던 폭동을 일으키고 실패하여 수감되었을 때 자신의 신념을 말로 구술한 것을 측근이 받아적은 것이라고 알려져 있습니다(후에 교정을 했다는게 일반적인 학설입니다). 책을 읽어보면 정말 히틀러의 유년시절부터 정치입문과정, 독일이 1차 세계대전에서 패망한 것에 대한 자신의 생각, 민족주의로 나야가야 하는 이유, 당시 유럽 및 세계정세 등 굉장히 광범위한 내용에 대해 상당히 설득적인 어조로 정리되어 있습니다. 뿐만 아니라 대중 연설가로서의 연설에서의 정치선동방법 또한 세밀히 기록되어 있습니다. 가령 민중들은 어리석지만 실제로 그들이 어리석은 것을 깨닫지 못하게 하라는, 한국 공무원보다 한 수 앞선 생각을 보여주기도 하고 같은 연설을 하더라도 낮에는 사람이 이성적으로 행동, 판단하기 때문에 선동이 쉽지 않지만 저녁에는 훨씬 감성적이기 때문에 감정적인 연설을 통해 대중을 휘몰아치기 쉽다는 내용 등을 상당히 전문가적인 견해로 이야기하고 있습니다. 물론 이 책이 훗날 추종자들에 의해 교정되었다고는 하더라도 본 내용을 바탕으로 했을 것인바, 구술로써 이런 내용이 제작되었다는 것은 히틀러의 정치적 식견과 판단, 능력이 일견 대단했음을 보여준다고 생각합니다. 사실 그 동안 히틀러를 그냥 시대를 잘 타고난 정치가, 미치광이라고 단순히 생각했던 제 생각이 크게 빗나갔음을 보여주었습니다. 결코 히틀러를 미화하거나 동조하는 측면에서 보지 않더라도 그는 어떤 방면에서는 대단한 인물이었다고 생각합니다. 그의 주장에 담긴 논거, 자기 소회 또한 상당히 설득력 있어 굳은 의지를 가지고 비판하는 입장에서 이 책을 읽지 않는다면 충분히 주장에 설득당할 수 있겠다는 생각도 들었습니다. 과연 이 책이 그 동안 출판금지를 당한 이유를 충분히 짐작할 수 있었습니다. 다음으로 결국 나치를 패망으로 이끈 소련과의 동부전선에 대해서도 이 책은 확실히 답을 알려주었습니다. 개인적으로 2차 세계대전에 관심 있어 관련 자료를 찾아볼 때 항상 궁금했던 것이 히틀러의 소련 침공 결정이었습니다. 전선이 두배로 넓어지는 것은 물론, 인구나 생산 등 국력 면에서도 만만치 않고 나폴레옹마저 결국 패퇴시킨 모스크바의 추위를 고려한다면 미친짓이라고 밖에 생각되지 않는, 도저히 이해할 수 없는 결정이 왜 나온 것일까 항상 궁금했었죠. 이 책에서 히틀러는 공산주의, 특히 볼셰비키즘을 정말 극도로 증오하고 있습니다. 이와 관련한 내용이 책의 30%는 되는 것 같지만 간단하게 줄이자면 공산주의가 결국 히틀러가 추구하는 민족주의에 반하기 때문입니다. 히틀러는 책에서 말하길 노동조합은 필요하다, 하지만 그 노동조합은 온전히 민족, 국민을 위한 노동조합이어야 하고 따라서 임금이나 처우개선을 위한 파업은 상상도 할 수 없는 반역행위라는 겁니다. 1차 세계대전에서 독일이 패전할 때 독일 노동자들의 파업을, 히틀러는 공산주의자들의 소행이라고 생각하고 있으며 이러한 '반역자'들의 본거지인 소련은 히틀러에게 반드시 무찔러야 하는 악의 무리였던 겁니다. 더구나 독일과 머지 않은, 동부유럽을 악의 무리에서 보호해야 하는 나치의 입장에서 바로 옆에 있는 소련은 결코 그냥 두어서는 안될 적대 집단이었던거죠. 히틀러의 처음 계획은 프랑스를 점령하고 영국까지 밀어낸 후 소련을 침공할 예정이었지만 제공권에서 밀리고 영국과의 협상에서 실패하자 소련으로 군사를 돌립니다. 히틀러에게 소련과의 전쟁은 당연한 수순이었던거죠. 제 생각처럼 '왜 불리한걸 알면서 무리해서 소련을 공격했지?' 이런 개념이 아니었던 겁니다. 3. <나의 투쟁> 책에 대해 최근 한국에 발간된 <나의 투쟁>은 앞부분 약 120쪽 정도에 프랑스 역사학자가 쓴 히틀러에 대한 간단한 설명, 책 본문에 대한 간단한 설명으로 시작하고 있습니다. 이 부분에 히틀러에 대한 간단한 평가와 비판이 제시되고 이후 1000쪽 분량의 히틀러가 구술했다고 알려진 <나의 투쟁> 본문이 실려있으며 뒷부분에 히틀러의 유언과 그 설명이 짧게 나옵니다. 특히 주의를 끄는 점은 앞부분에 나오는 역사학자의 <나의 투쟁> 책에 대한 고찰입니다. 이 책은 히틀러의 정치적 선전도구로 제작되어 당시 독일에서는 마치 성경과 같이 유통되었다는군요. 졸업이나 결혼 등 축하할 일이 있으면 이 두꺼운 책을 선물로 주기도 했으며 따라서 집집마다 한권씩은 있었다고 합니다. 또한 각종 연설이나 언론에서 성경을 인용하듯 <나의 투쟁> 구절을 인용하기도 했다고 합니다. 이는 전쟁이 끝난 후, 독일 국민들을 조사하면서 밝혀진 내용인데 이 책을 읽어봤냐는 질문에 거의 대부분의 사람들은 선물 받기는 했지만 읽진 않았다고 대답했다고 합니다. 물론 직접 읽어보니 분량도 그렇거니와 주제, 내용이 일반인이 가볍게 읽을만한 책은 아니라는 생각은 듭니다. 정말 학술연구를 하거나 당시 사회분위기에 따라 히틀러에 대해 직접 알고 싶은 사람만이 참고 읽을 정도구요. 하지만 전쟁이 끝난 후 많은 사람들이 이 책을 태워버리거나 묻는 등 폐기처분을 했다는 것은 읽든 읽지 않았든 책의 내용은 여러방법으로 알고 있었으리란 생각은 듭니다. 처음 책을 접하기 전에는 한국 번역판에 비판적 주석이 들어있다고 해서 히틀러의 생각이나 내용에 대해 반박하는 주석이 상당부분 차지할 거라고 생각했습니다. 오히려 그런 주석을 좀 기대한 거도 사실이구요. 하지만 제 생각과는 다르게 주석은 거의 없습니다. 그냥 세세한 부분에서 히틀러가 자신의 어릴적 가난함을 좀 부풀린 것을 바로잡아주거나 역사적 사실, 히틀러가 착각한 연도를 바로잡아주는 주석이 대부분입니다. 결국 히틀러의 민족주의 사상으로 1000 페이지 책의 내용을 다 채우고 있습니다. 더구나 당시의 상당한 설득력과 근거를 갖춘 내용이, 프랑스와 유대인에 대항하는 민족주의를 부르짖는 걸 생각하면 섬뜩하기까지 하군요. 그리고 마지막 부분의 패전이 확실해진 시점에서의 일기와 유언에서도 히틀러는 반성하거나 뉘우치지 않습니다. 하긴 히틀러에게 그런 반성을 기대한다는 것이 가당찮은 것 같기도 하지만 히틀러는 프랑스, 서유럽을 정복하고 소련을 침공하러 가고 싶은데 끝까지 자신의 협상에 응하지 않은 영국의 처칠에 대해, 자신이 유럽에서 유대인을 다 몰아내고 공산주의자들을 때려잡으러 가는데 협상만 하면 편하게 앉아서 그 열매(?)를 따먹을 텐데 그걸 거절하고 있다며 세계 흐름을 읽지 못한 것을 훗날 반드시 후회하리라며 저주하고 있습니다. 미국의 루즈벨트에 대한 혐오를 앞세우는 트럼프. 한국은 어떤가요. 중국을 혐오하고 일본을 혐오하고 북한을 혐오하고 한국 내의 조선족, 동남아인, 난민들을 혐오하면서 삐뚤어진 민족주의 고립주의는 이미 뿌리깊이 자라고 있습니다. 중국과 미국은 패권을 놓고 신냉전의 구도를 굳히고 있으며 러시아는 여전히 실질적 독재 국가이며 그 영향력이 동유럽과 터키까지 퍼지고 있습니다. 일본은 다시 전쟁할 수 있는 보통국가로의 헌법개정까지 코앞인 상황이구요. 혐오와 광기가 휩쓰는 세계, 히틀러가 다시 깨어난다고 해도 과언이 아니라는 생각은 저만의 생각일까요.
