지하철이 역에서 출발하지 않는다. 출입구와 출입문의 위치가 약간 어그러진 것이 초보기관사라고 생각했다. 지하철의 도어가 열리지 않는다. 아마도 조금 더 앞뒤로 지하철이 움직이며 문과의 위치를 맞춘 뒤에 열릴 것이다. 그러나 시간이 지나도 움직이지 않는다. 잠시 후 차내의 스피커로 이야기가 흘러나온다. 사고로 인해 잠시 정차중이다. 쯧, 하고 혀를 찼다. 지각의 핑계로 교통사고라니. 그것도 지하철에서. 무슨 일이 벌어졌는지를 알게 되는데는 오랜 시간이 걸리지 않았다. 누군가가 죽었다. 전기로 움직인다고는 믿을 수 없을만큼 육중하고 거대한 지하철에 비하면 사람은 연두부처럼 연약할 따름이다. 푸석하게 부서진 시신을 두고 나는 혀를 찼다. 누군가의 삶보다 내가 들을 몇 마디의 꾸지람이 더 짜증이 났던 것일까. 지하철에 타고있는 사람들은 저마다의 표정을 짓는다. 혀를 차는건 누구일까, 짜증을 내는건 누구일까. 슬퍼하거나 두려워하거나. 아직은 인간인 표정들을 외면하고 나와 같은 동종의 사람들을 찾는다. 안도가 필요하다. 나만 이런게 아니라는 안도. 사람이 죽었다는 사실은 조금 더 드라마틱하고, 그래서 좀 더 마음에 울림이 크게 퍼진다. 단순한 접촉사고로 차가 막힌다거나 할 때, 늦어서 짜증이 나는 일로 죄책감을 느끼진 않을것이다. 하지만 동시에 문득 그런생각이 든다. 타인은 얼마나 먼 것인가. 함께는 얼마나 아득한 말인가. 허리가 구부정하고 다리가 불편한 할머니가 버스의 자리에 앉을때까지 출발을 기다리는, 그 느릿하고 위태로운 발걸음과 뼈에 거죽만이 매달려 있는 손으로 간신히 손잡이를 잡아 나가는 과정을 바라보며 짜증스러움이 올라오는 사람의 사회란 얼마나 외롭고 고독한 것인가. 나의 인간성은 어디로 팔려가고 어디에서 회복해야하는걸까. 문득, 손에 쥔 서류가방이 유독 무겁게 느껴졌다. 이번 달에는 보너스가 얼마쯤 나온댔는데. 그 돈으로 사고 싶었던 것들을 떠올린다. 어디에도 혀를 쯧 차는 나를 외롭지 않게 해줄 것들은 보이지 않는다. 다만 그럴싸하게 좋은 것들은 이것저것 많이 보인다. 지하철에 실려가는 나는 일종의 상품권이 아니었을까. 환전센터에서 매달 환전을 받아간다. 무언가를 사고 그것이 내 것임을, 나의 소유권을 증명하고 그렇게 나의 세계는 나와 너가 아닌, 나의 것과 남의 것으로 구별되어 차곡차곡 쌓여간다. 누군가는 자신의 인간성을 찾으려 여행을 떠났다. 민들레 홀씨마냥 여기저기를 떠돌며 많은 사람들에게 아직 남아있는 인간성에 기대었다. 벗어남은 그렇게 시작되어, 남들에게 사랑을 얻어 겨우 나도 남을 사랑할 수 있게 되었음을 기뻐했다고 한다. 그러나 떠날 수 있는 이들만큼이나 떠날 수 없는 이들은 얼마나 많을까. 인간성의 회복은 관계를 통해서만 가능한건 아닐까 하는 생각이 문득 든다. 젊을때 연애해라, 여러 사람을 만나 봐라, 많은 걸 겪어봐라. 하는 말들이 어쩌면 누군가를 이기고 고난을 이겨내고 역경을 극복하며 성공을 위해 준비하는 시간들이 아니라, 타인을 우리로 이해할 수 있고, 나와 너를 함께로 받아들일 수 있기 위한 시간들은 아닐까 하는 생각이 들었다. 좋은 사람들도, 나쁜 사람들도. 그렇게 마음속에 쌓은 다른 사람과의 정이, 전혀 모르는 누군가조차 소중한 사람임을 느끼게 만드는 것. 그런게 새삼 많이 중요하다는 생각이 든다. 그런데 자꾸 그런 마음을 잃어버리는 것 같아서 슬프다. 그래도 되는 것 같고, 그런게 일상인 곳에서 물드는 것은 달갑지가 않다. 물들고 싶은 것은 서로에게 가질 수 있는 애정과 따스함인데. 아, 20분은 넘게 지각한 것 같다. 계단을 헉헉대며 뛰어올라갔다. 허벅지가 뻐근하고 심장이 쿵쾅댄다. 헉헉대는 숨결 사이로 또 혀를 쯧. 찼다. 20대 초반에 석모도로 지인들과 여행을 하고 내려오는 길에
고속도로 한가운데서 타고있던 버스가 사람을 받아 즉사하는 사고가 있었습니다.
저는 2번 좌석에 앉아 3번에 앉아있던 할배와 잡담을 하던 중이었는데,
버스기사가 "어.. 어.." 하더니 바로 쾅... 하더군요.
한 110~120km/h로 달리는 버스와 사람이 부딫히면 버스에는 사람모양의 자국이 남고,
사람은 거죽만 남고 내용물은 흩뿌려진다는걸 그 때 알게되었습니다.
사망한 사람은 음주운전으로 접촉사고를 내고 차를 버리고 도망갔다가 다시 차를 가지러 고속도로... 더 보기

저희 버스와 사고가 난 지점과 100미터? 정도 떨어진 지점에 사망자의 차량과 사고가 난 차량이 있었습니다.
그냥 아무 생각 없이 경찰서에서 진술을 하면서 '산 사람은 살아야지' 하는 생각으로
사실을 진술하되, 말미에 "그 상황에서 당황하여 급브레이크를 밟거나 핸들을 꺾지 않은 운전기사님께 감사합니다" 는 진술을 덧붙였는데,
그 진술이 끝나자마자 사망자의 아내가 배가 부른 상태로 장인/장모와 경찰서에 들어와서 오열하는 것을 보고 마음이 참 복잡했던 기억이 납니다.
30대 초반, 신혼이라고 했었어요.
그 것만 있었다면 타인은 멀고, 더군다나 죽은 타인은.. 더더군다나 고속도로에서 음주운전을 하고 무단횡단이라니.. 라고 마음에서 끝맺음이 되었을 일인데,
그 순간에도 버스에 타고 있던 어여쁜 처자를 의식하면서 목소리를 깔고, 허세돋는 몸동작을 했었다는 말이지요..
한동안 잊고 살았었는데.. (어여쁜 처자를 의식했던 것을)
이 글로 기억이 났습니다.
일단 오늘 하루는 겸손하게 살아야지..
