오뇌가 저물 때가 돼서야 차츰 눈이 감기려 하였으나 뒷산을 향해 난 창문으로 쏟아져 내리는 태양이 원수라, 타의로 불면을 택한 K는 못마땅한 눈치였다. 그것은 자신의 영향 아래 놓인 온갖 것들을 벌건빛으로 태우며 심지어 이 좁은 방까지 화사한 색들로 빛무리를 놓는 바람에 그는 콧구멍 아래까지 이불을 끌어올린 채, 당장 피라도 새어 나올 것 같이 충혈된 눈으로 오렌지빛으로 물드는 방 안을 둘러보았다. 이윽고 그는 자신을 뒤덮으려는 햇볕을 경멸이라도 하는 듯 이불 속으로 머리까지 숨어들어 발가락부터 온몸을 한 마리 구더기처럼 웅크렸다. 그가 내쉰 더운 한숨이 개운치 못한 긴 꼬리를 남기며 이불 속을 맴돌다 이내 연기처럼 사라졌다. "오늘도 왜 못 잤는지는……. 아, 안 잔 거지만 묻지도 말라니까. 왜냐하면 그건 정말 아무것도 아니거든……." 그는 두 눈을 질끈 감았다. 덮인 눈꺼풀 아래의 두 눈이 마치 밧줄로 온몸을 결박당한 섬망증 환자의 그것처럼 불안히 들썩거렸다. 이를 악물어 관자근이 불거지고 한 차례 온몸을 뒤틀더니 여전히 눈을 감은 채로, "눈이 너무 뻑뻑하군, 시려워서 눈을 깜빡이기도 힘들어." 고개만 빼꼼 내밀어 벽면의 시계를 바라보았다. 시간은 8시를 갓 넘어가고 있었다. 그 시간대의 빛무리가 방 안을 포근히 감싸는 것과 대비되어 마치 빈방처럼 새벽녘에나 어울릴 법한 음침한 고요가 사방에 만연하였다. 동시에 시계의 초침소리가 서글픈 메아리처럼 온 방 안에 울려 퍼졌다. 초침소리가 심기를 거슬린 것인지 그는 -진작에 박살을 내버렸어야 했는데, 라며 신경질적으로 이불을 걷어차더니 침대 위로 퍼져 앉았다. 밤새 잠을 이루지 못한 K의 얽은 얼굴에 놀라울 정도로 빠르게 수심이 차오르더니 금세 울적한 표정으로 변모하였다. 수척한 인상을 찌푸리던 그는 머리맡에 놓아둔 쌍안경을 자신의 가랑이 사이로 가져와 놓고 들릴 듯 말 듯 한 목소리로 입술을 달싹거렸다. "속으로 그리는 것보다 이렇게라도 하는 것이 낫다는 게 더 슬픈 일이라고. 그런데 해야만 한다니까……. 오늘도 말이지." 유아용 완구품처럼 조잡한 쌍안경을 여럽게 만지작거리는 자신의 손가락을 내려다보던 K는 고개를 가눌 수 없을 정도로 괴로워졌다. 이에 반해 방 안은 확실히 부드러운 바람과 고운 빛들로 더욱더 화사해지고 있었다. "내가 봐도 참 한심해 보이지만……. 알 게 뭐야, 누가 뭐라 하여도 이건 용인되어야 할 행동이야. 이렇게 할 수밖에 없잖아. 왜냐하면……. 거창한 사랑이니까. 그것도 위대한 짝사랑 말이야." 그는 쌍안경과 휴대폰을 쥐고 맥없이 걸어가 문고리를 당겼다. 거친 마감이 눈에 띄는 투박한 나무문이 조용히 열렸다 닫혔다. 이른 아침의 볕은 집 안 가득히 오렌지빛과 따스한 기운을 불어넣으며 청명한 생기를 돋우고 있었으나, K가 들어서고 난 직후부턴 그 모든 온화했던 것들이 바로 한순간에 오래된 우표처럼 불투명해지고, 사그라들며 또 퇴색되어 마치 K를 피해 산산이 흩어지는 듯하였다. 그가 시선을 내리깔며 피로에 전 목소리로 말했다. "아주 상쾌하군, 좋은 아침이야. 기분 좋은 일이 있을 것만 같아." 발을 질질 끌다시피 걸어가 협소한 식탁 위 차갑게 식은 커피를 단숨에 들이켰다. 목이 더 칼칼해지는지 냉장고 안의 시원한 생수를 꺼내 마시자 허깨비 같은 웃음이 나타났다 사라졌다. 뺨과 입술 주변 곰보 자국이 흉해졌다. "참 내가 봐도 괜찮은 농담이었어, 나중에 써먹어 볼까." 그는 조금 남은 생수병을 입에 문 채 거실로 걸어갔다. 베란다 창을 통해 온 거실에 쏟아지는 햇빛에 그의 눈가가 가늘어졌다. 그는 괴로운 표정으로 한쪽에 놓인 소파에 몸을 누웠다. 유령처럼 창백한 낯빛으로 집 안을 관통하는 햇볕과 부유하는 먼지들 사이에서 몇 분 간 앓는 소리를 내던 그는 핸드폰을 집어 들었다. 마침 그때 귀가 아플 정도로 커다란 음량의 핸드폰 알람이 울렸다. K는 흐리멍덩한 눈을 떠 화면의 시간을 보려 하였다. 시야가 흐려지는지 몇 번이나 눈을 감았다 뜨며 초점을 맞추다가 시간을 확인하고는, "그녀의 구두 소리가 들려오는 거 같아." 라며 본 적 없던 미소로 팔걸이에 놓아둔 쌍안경을 들고 베란다 창 쪽으로 가까이 다가섰다. "이것 보라고. 집자마자 울려대는 꼴을……. 시간감각은 정확하다니까, 단지 조금 피곤할 뿐이야." 가까이서 내리쬐는 햇볕 탓에 K의 얼굴에 음영이 생기자 곰보 자국이 보기 흉할 정도로 불거졌다. 그때 K가 과장된 몸짓으로 창밖을 내려다보며 능숙하게 쌍안경을 눈앞으로 들이밀었다. 조잡한 쌍안경의 두 렌즈가 햇볕에 번쩍였다. K의 시선이 향해있는 우편의 골목길 끝에서 단연 눈에 띌 만큼 아름다운 숙녀 하나가 경쾌한 구두 소리와 함께 다가오고 있었다. 그는 침을 꼴깍 삼켰다. 바로 눈앞에 있는 듯한 그녀의 옷차림을 살피며, "검은 치마와 얇은 니트, 아주 시원해 보이는 리넨 코트......" 그는 품평하듯이 말을 이어갔다. "지난주 화요일과 같은 옷차림이군, 언제나 당신은 아름다워요." 그녀의 어깨 언저리까지 내려오는 단발의 머리칼과 치맛자락이 따뜻한 훈풍에 살랑거리자, K는 혹 바람에 그녀의 향기라도 실려 올까 싶어 게걸스레 킁킁거렸다. "향기, 향기라도 맡고 싶어. 그녀는 모과 향이나 장미 향...... 어느 것이라도 좋아." 그녀는 윤이 나는 낮은 굽의 구두를 또각거리며 점차 K의 시야로 가까워졌다. K의 게슴츠레한 시선이 치마 아래 뻗은 다리로 향했다. "아, 나의 천사, 나의 숨결……. 나만의 성경이 되어달라고." 그는 잠시 골똘히 생각하며 쌍안경을 내려놓고 크게 숨을 들이마셨다. 유령같이 창백했던 얼굴이 조금 붉어지더니 짐짓 사무적인 표정으로 말했다. "당신을 자세히 보고 싶은 것이지 네 다리를 훔쳐보고 싶은 건 결코 아니야." 그는 다시금 눈앞으로 쌍안경을 가져오며 덧붙였다. "……. 무척 아름답기는 해. 눈이 번쩍 띄거든 다리를 좋아하는데 아, 상냥한 그대는 다리까지 내어주고 말이야……." 그가 그렇게 말하는 사이 어느새 그녀는 K의 자택 바로 아래의 카페로 들어서고 있었다. 햇볕이 내리는 테라스 테이블에 핸드백을 내려둔 그녀는 코트를 벗어 의자에 걸쳐놓고 자리에 앉아 주문하였다. 자연스레 꼬아지는 그녀의 다리에 주목하던 K가 숨소리까지 죽이며 속삭였다. "오늘도 홍차를 시키겠지. 난 다 알고 있다고……." 아니나 다를까 이윽고 종업원이 붉은 차 한잔을 가져와 그녀 앞에 두고 돌아갔다. "거봐, 내가 얼마나 당신에게 대단한 사람인지 알긴 아나? 어디 당신이 매일 아침 홍차를 마시며 일간신문을 읽은 후 출근한다는 걸 아는 사람이 있을까……." 그가 마른 침을 삼켰다. "나 밖엔 없을 테지! 내가 그런 사람이라고, 그러니 한 번만 쳐다봐 달라는 거야." 쌍안경이 다시 한 번 번쩍거렸다. K의 두 눈이 더욱더 시뻘게졌다. 이윽고 홍차 한 잔을 비운 그녀는 짐을 챙겨 일어서더니 왼편의 골목길로 발걸음을 재촉하며 사라졌다. K는 쌍안경 속 떠나가는 그녀의 뒷모습을 유심히 바라보며 마음속으로 말했다. '나의 귀여운 여인! 내일 또 보자고. 난 오늘보다 더 홀쭉해져 있을거야. 각 문장을 쉼표가 없는 단문으로 끊어쓰는 것을 추천드립니다. 복문을 유지하고 싶으시다면 조금더 가독성있게 문장을 다듬을 필요가 있을거라고 생각해요. 이번 글에서는 마감에 쫒겨 급하게 쓰시느라 더 그랬던 것 같지만요 ㅎㅎ
