워크래프트를 봤습니다. 첫 예고편에서 괜찮다 싶었던 영화가 계속 예고편이 나올수록 웃음이 나오곤 해서 참 기대를 많이 낮추고 봤는데요. 그런데도 별로였네요. 제가 원작 게임의 팬이 아니었다면, 예고편만으로도 볼 생각을 안 했을 것 같아요. 그리고 영화를 보다 포기했을 것 같고요. 영화에서 제일 봐주기 힘들었던 건 소품이었네요. CG로 구현된 오크는 훌륭한데, 그에 비해서 인간의 갑옷이나 무기는 마치 일본 애니메이션 원작 영화들처럼 원작과 실사 영화의 차이를 생각도 안 하고 무작정 똑같이 따라한 것처럼 보여요. 그래서 보는 내내 거슬렸습니다. 오히려 오크가 괜찮아보이는 이유가 인간에 비해선 비교적 영화에 맞게 디자인된 복장이 대부분이었기 때문이었던 것 같고요. 뿐만 아니라, 등장 인물을 표현하는 데에 있어서도 두 주인공인 로서와 듀로탄 중에서 후자가 압도적으로 좋았습니다. 로서는 수많은 사건에 종속되서 끌려다니는데다가, 그 분량이 자기한테 온전히 쏟아지지 않아서 개성을 표현할만한 장면 자체가 별로 없었어요.(전 로서 역을 맡은 배우의 주연 드라마였던 바이킹즈도 재미있게 본 편인데, 그 때의 매력이 제대로 발휘도 안 되더군요.) 그에 비하면 듀로탄은 영화 내에서 유일하게 감정을 이입할만한 캐릭터였습니다. 사실 한 편의 영화에서 열 손가락이 넘는 등장 인물을 두 세력으로 나눠서 표현하는 데에 성공한다면 그게 더 이상할지도 모르겠고요. 심지어 훌륭하다고 말한 듀로탄은 다른 오크 캐릭터들이 완벽하게 평면적으로 묘사될 정도로 비중이 적었기에 가능했고요. 그리고 전투 묘사도 너무 유치했네요. 특히 후반부는 카타르시스는 커녕, 중반부까지의 몰입도를 찢어갈기는 수준이었습니다. 그저 인상적인 한 장면이나 있을 뿐이지, 후반부의 전투는 욕 먹을만한 편집과 맞물려서 기억에도 남지 않고, 지루하기만 했습니다. 영화 내내 초반부의 습격 장면 말고는 잘 짜여졌다 싶은 액션도 없었고요. 특히 대규모 군세 간의 전투를 묘사하는 데 있어서 TV 드라마만도 못한 연출이더군요. 그래서 영화를 다 보고 나서 드는 생각은 욕심을 버렸으면 훨씬 깔끔한 영화가 되었을 것 같더군요. 특히 영화는 게임과 전혀 다른 설정으로 각색까지 했는데, 좀 더 과감하게 가지를 쳐내는 편이 좋았을 것 같아요. 전 이 영화에서 제일 불필요한 캐릭터는 메디브였다고 생각해요. 메디브가 빠지고 온전히 인간과 오크의 대립만을 다루었다면 더 좋았을 것 같아요. 가로나도 많이 이야기되는 단점 중 하나인데, 만족스럽진 않더라도 필요한 등장 인물이긴 했다고 봐요. 마지막으로 원작 팬들을 위한 팬 서비스는 사실 하나씩 보면 별거 아닌데, 영화 전체로 보면 그게 쌓이고 쌓여서 굉장히 불필요한 장면이 많았던 것 같습니다. 예를 들어서 드워프나 하이엘프의 등장은 영화 내에서 자연스럽게 녹아든 게 아니라, 그냥 세계관을 설명하기 위해서 잠깐씩 튀어 나오는 수준에 그쳐요. 마치 후속편에서는 이런 저런 가상의 종족들도 나오니 기대해주세요라고 말하는 것 같은데, 반지의 제왕 1편만 하더라도 반지를 어떻게 할지 논의하기 위해서 여러 종족이 모여서 서로 이야기를 나누던 그 장면에 비하면 많이 아쉽더군요. 심지어 이 쪽은 CG도 티가 많이 날 정도로 별로에요. 가장 짜증나는 건 영화의 모든 갈등이 해소는 커녕, 고조조차 되지 못하고 결말이 나버리는, 대놓고 후속작을 암시하는 엔딩은 최악이었습니다. 정이 확 떨어지더군요. 이 정도 수준으로 2편이 나온다면 글쎄요, 그냥 게임 워크래프트 1과 2를 하는 게 나을 것 같아요. 연기가 전체적으로 허섭한 것은 둘째로 치더라도, 가로나는 특히나 심각하다. 이종족 포로를 첫대면하는 자리에서조차 국왕 내외의 안전을 경시하는 스톰윈드의 경호팀은 한심하기 짝이 없고, 그 행동 양식 역시 전혀 납득할 수 없는 개별 요소들로 점철되어 있다. 안두인 로서의 대사는... 말을 말도록 하자.
듀로탄은 그나마 작품 속에서 논리적 정합성을 가지고 행동하는 인물이었고, 그린지저스를 영화의 시작과 끝으로 배치한 것은 아웃랜드 겨우 밟았던 쪼렙 오크냥꾼으로서조차 가슴 뛰긴 했다. 고급여관에선 개새끼지만 그래도 쓰랄은 개추야! 근데 그래서 듀로탄은 왜 희생해야 했는지?'
말씀하신 부분하고 겹치는 부분이 꽤 되네요. 추가로 엔딩이 진짜 마음에 안 들었던 게, 듀로탄 사망, 굴단 건재, 레인 린 사망, 가로나 오해 받음, 스랄 동동 등 카타르시스를 주는 요소가 단 하나도 없어요. 그냥 '다음 편도 보면 기분 좋을 수도 있을걸?' 하는 건데 뒷 내용을 미리 알고 보는 입장에서도 짜증 나더군요. 그리고 이번 확장팩의 주요 캐치프레이즈가 '아제로스를 위하여' 아니었나요. '얼라이언스를 위하여'만 외쳤어도 될 듯 했는데...
차라리 진짜 호드편 얼라편 나눠서 굴단이 실권 잡고 게이트 열고 나와서 깽판 치는 부분까지 자르고, 떡밥 해소되는 후반부 내용까지 더 다뤄서 한편 내고 그러는 게 낫지 않았을까 싶기도 했습니다. 아 이러면 어차피 앞편이 발암인 건 마찬가지였을까요-_-;
