락클라이밍(Rock Climbing)을 잘 모르시는 분들 중에도 김자인 선수에 대해 들어보신 분들은 많으시죠? 런닝맨을 비롯한 tv 프로그램에도 몇 번 출연하셨고, 클라이밍 월드컵 등에서 수상하면 스포츠 뉴스에도 나오더군요. 위 동영상에서 오른쪽 벽을 타고 있는 김자인 선수의 클라이밍 스포츠 계에서의 위상은 이 한 마디로 정리될 것 같습니다: "2015년 클라이밍 월드컵 여자 종합 랭킹 1위." 이렇게 우리나라 선수가 잘하고 있는 이 클라이밍이란 운동은 무엇일까요? 클라이밍 종류는 아주 많습니다만, 일반인이 하는 클라이밍은 크게 세 종류로 나눌 수 있을 것 같습니다. 1. 볼더링 (Bouldering) : 비교적 낮은 높이에서 줄 없이 하는 클라이밍 2. 탑로프 (Top Rope) 클라이밍 : 루트의 가장 높은 곳에 걸어둔 줄을 안전 장치 삼아 높은 곳까지 올라가는 클라이밍 (무한도전 '행운의 편지' 편에 나옴) 3. 리드 (Lead) 클라이밍 : 줄을 벽 곳곳에 설치된 클립에 스스로 걸면서 높은 곳까지 올라가는 클라이밍 위 영상에 나온 것은 리드 클라이밍으로, 김자인 선수의 주종목이기도 합니다. 리드 클라이밍 중에서도 듀엘(Duel,대결)이라 불리는 경기 방식으로, 두 사람이 같은 코스를 동시에 도전합니다. 같은 코스지만 신체 사이즈나 개개인의 특성 때문에 조금씩 다른 방식으로 올라가는 게 한 눈에 보여서 흥미롭지 않나요? (만약 그렇지 않다면 순전히 저의 문장력과 소개 동영상 선정의 실패입니다 ㅠㅠ) 자 그러면 흥미를 끄는 소개를 성공했다 치고 추천사 들어갑니다! 클라이밍 해보세요~ 두번 하세요! 제가 아직 초-중급자 아마추어니까 지극히 개인적인 감상 위주지만, 제가 느끼는 장점은 이렇습니다. [따로, 또 혼자 할 수 있다] 운동은 보통 함께 할 때가 더 즐겁지만, 바쁜 현대인들이 항상 함께 운동할 사람을 찾는다는 것은 쉬운 일이 아니죠. 그렇다고 혼자 할 수 있는 운동을 하자니, 혼자 하는 운동은 재미도 덜하고 의욕도 떨어지기 쉬워서 하다 그만두기 쉽습니다. 클라이밍은 시간 맞는 사람과 같이도 했다가 혼자도 했다가 하면서 지속성과 재미 두마리 토끼를 다 잡을 수 있는 운동입니다. 탑로프와 리드는 '줄을 잡아 주는 사람'(Belayer)이 있어야 하기 때문에 같이하는 사람이 필요하지만, 줄이 필요없는 볼더링은 혼자서도 할 수 있기 때문이죠. (간혹 탑로프도 혼자 즐길 수 있게 '자동 도르래'(auto belay)가 설치된 곳도 있습니다) [누구나와 함께 할 수 있는 운동이다] 보통의 운동은 남과 여, 운동 신경이 좋은 사람과 나쁜 사람, 오래 그 운동을 한 사람과 초보자는 함께 즐기기 힘듭니다. 항상 더 잘하는 쪽은 상대를 배려하느라 충분히 운동을 못한 느낌이 들고, 못하는 쪽은 상대한테 고맙지만 미안한 마음이 들죠. 하지만 클라이밍은 같이하는 사람이 같은 레벨의 코스를 도전할 필요가 전혀 없기 때문에 함께 즐길 수 있습니다. 유일하게 장애물이 될 수 있는 것은 체급 차이이지만, 이 마저도 조금 더 고급진 장비를 사용하면 극복할 수 있습니다. [누구나 "잘" 할 수 있는 운동이다] 여자가 남자보다 불리하지 않습니다. (일반적인 경우에) 부족한 근력을 유연성과 가벼움으로 상쇄시킵니다. 운동 신경이 없어도 잘 할 수 있습니다. 흔히 운동신경이 좋다할 때 얘기하는 순발력/민첩성이 거의 필요 없습니다. 반대로 말하자면, 운동 신경이 크게 도움이 안됩니다. 뻣뻣해도 잘 할 수 있습니다. 근력으로 극복할 수 있습니다. 근육이 많이 없어도 잘 할 수 있습니다. 가볍거나 유연하면 유리합니다. 고소 공포증이 있어도 잘 할 수 있습니다. 물론 탑로프나 리드는 힘들 수도 있지만, 볼더링은 낮은 높이에서 하기 때문에 잘 할 수 있습니다. [운동 효과가 좋다] 클라이밍은 전신 운동입니다. 팔 힘으로 끌어올린다고 생각하기 쉽지만, 다리로 미는 힘, 배와 등으로 당기는 힘, 악력과 발목 힘을 골고루 쓰는 운동입니다. 개인적으로 '헬스 근육'을 별로 이쁘다고 생각하지 않는데, '생활 근육'이라고 할까요? 그런 잔근육이 균형있고 이쁘게 잡힙니다. 어깨와 등의 발달이 가장 눈에 띄지만 엉덩이, 허벅지, 팔, 복근 모두에 효과가 있고, 제 주변 남녀 모두 본인의 몸매 변화에 만족하고 있습니다. 클라이밍은 근력 운동만이 아닙니다. 다양한 자세로 스트레칭을 한 상태에서 균형을 잡고 버텨야 하는 과정이 절반 이상이기에 요가나 필라테스와 같은 효과가 있습니다. (동영상에 나오는 대결 종목이 스피드를 겨루는 종목이라 그렇지 사실 움직임이 느린 운동입니다.) 근력 강화, 몸매 교정에 유연성 확보는 덤입니다. [재미있다] 흔히 클라이밍을 퀴즈/퍼즐에 빗댑니다. 근력으로 어거지로 올라가는 것은 초급 루트에서만 가능하고 잘못된 방식입니다. 클라이밍에는 여러가지 기술이 있고, 자세와 무게 중심에 대한 이해를 바탕으로 한 [길 찾기]가 핵심인 운동이죠. 클라이밍에서 자주 하는 질문이 '너 이 루트 풀 수 있냐'(Can you solve this problem?)라는 것만 봐도 느낌이 오시지 않나요? 아! 처음 보는 사람에게도 퀴즈 풀이를 핑계로 말을 걸기 쉽다는 것도 빼놓을 수 없는 장점입니다!
