 제게 올해 최고의 영화였던 [버드맨]을 보고 난 후 제 블로그에 적은 글입니다 . 놀라운 작품이라 머리를 한 대 세게 맞은 느낌이었어요. 영화란 매체는 '화자에 대한 의심'을 품도록 만드는 즉, 내포저자를 상정하는 방식으로는 만들어질 수 없다는 생각이 깨어졌지요. 후에 대부분의 개봉작을 그냥 흘려보냈는데도 그리 아쉽지 않았습니다. 이런 영화를 또 만나게 될까요? 잘 모르겠습니다. 영화에 소품으로 등장한 보르헤스의 단편집에 실린 [죽지 않는 사람]과 연관지어 글을 써보았습니다. 영화관에서 [버드맨]을 보고 나서 영화의 결말을 어떻게 해석해야할까 잠깐 고민했습니다. 물론 영화는 허구일 뿐이고 허구의 열린 결말은 감상자가 어떤 해석을 내리든 상관이 없습니다. 현실적 개연성을 따져서 리건의 염력을 환상으로, 마지막 장면을 자살로 해석해도 상관없을 테고, 리건의 딸인 샘이 창문가에 서서 짓던 미소를 근거로 리건을 둘러싼 모든 사건을 한편의 거대한 농담으로 해석하는 것도 가능합니다. 또 한가지, 감독은 영화에 외삽될 수 있는 정보를 통해, 버드맨에 등장하는 인물과 배우로서의 그들의 실제 삶이 연결되도록 유도합니다. 주인공인 버드맨역의 마이클 키튼이 배트맨의 실제 주인공이었다는 것, 마이크역을 맡은 에드워드 노튼이 대본에 간섭을 많이 하는 배우로 알려진 것 등이 허구로 짜여진 원형의 세상인 무대와 무대 뒤라는 [버드맨]의 배경을 배우들의 현실과 매우 밀접하게 연관시키지요. 이를 근거로, 이 영화는 한편의 연극을 상연하기 위한 구도를 영화적 기법으로 보여주고, 영화의 서사는, 다름아닌 연극을 무대에 올리는 과정에서 일어나는 희비극을 보여주는, 마치 연극과 영화가 꼬리에 꼬리를 물고 서로의 무대를 혼성적으로 쓰고 있다고 생각할 수도 있을 것입니다. 또 한편, 리건이 준비하는 무대와 그 무대 뒷편을 리건 자신의 정신(의식/무의식)과 연결해서 보는 것은 어떨까요. 무대는 리건이 타인(관객)이라는 거울을 통해 자신을 드러내 보이고 싶어하는 상징적인 공간으로, 무대의 뒷편은 리건의 무의식의 영역이라고 말이죠. 그렇게 생각해 본다면 리건의 초능력, 즉, 마음에 안드는 배우에게 조명설비를 떨구어 강제 하차시킨다거나, 공중부양을 한다거나, 염력을 발휘하는 것은 하나도 신기할 이유가 없지요. 이런 해석이 허구적이나마 일말의 개연성을 가질 수 있을 것이라고 생각한 가장 큰 이유는 영화의 음악 때문입니다. 일반적인 영화음악이란 외삽되어 관객에게 특정한 정서를 불러일으키는(또는 강요하는) 방식인 반면에 이 영화에서 들려오던 음악은 리건의 정서와 심지어 위기의 상황에서 가파르게 뛰는 심장소리와도 연결되지요. 영화가 시작되었을 때 등장한 드럼 소리는 영화의 중후반 리건과 마이크가 브로드웨이를 걸을 때 길가에서 우연히 마주친 드러머로 현실화되지요. 그러다 마지막 무대를 향해 걸어가는 리건이 무대 뒤의 구불구불한 복도를 지날때 드러머는 태연하게 어느 구석을 차지하고 영화의 음악을 연주합니다. 그러나 드러머를 바라보는 시선은 태연하기만 하죠. 이 시선은 리건의 시선이 아닙니다. 리건을 바라보는 또 다른 시선 즉, 영화를 보는 관객의 시선이지요. 또한 리건이 리건 자신을 보는 시선이기도 합니다. 이렇게 영화의 음악은 실제 리건이라는 배우의 삶이라 상정지은 것을 단숨에 허구적인 것으로 만들어버리죠. 실제와 허구의 경계가 무너지는 순간 관객은 이 영화를 액면가 그대로 받아들이는 것은 쓸모없다는 것을 알게 되지요. 저는 영화의 음악이라는 것이 때론 얼마나 생뚱맞은 장치가 될 수 있는가를 여러 영화를 통해 경험했습니다. 감독의 의도가 스크린 속의 서사에서 자연스레 펼쳐져 관객에게 녹아드는 방식이 아니라, 갑자기 스크린을 넘어 외출을 감행하는 것이죠. 물론 그 외출이 효과적일 때(?)도 있습니다만 마치 목덜미가 잡아채어져서 강요당했다고 여겨진 적도 많았습니다. 저는 조금 더 건조했으면 바라게 됩니다. 리건을 무대라는 강박으로 이끄는 세 가지의 목소리가 있습니다. 첫째, 빨간 등이 켜지며 스탠바이를 주지시키는 소리 둘째, 버드맨의 목소리 세째, 리건 자신의 독백입니다. 무대 뒤의 리건은 분열된 채로 세 가지의 목소리를 다 듣습니다. 무대에 오르라는 명령을 리건은 착실히 따르죠. 그러나 그냥은 안됩니다. 예술가로 성공하고 싶다는 리건의 에고는 '넌 버드맨이야!'라고 말하는 분열된 또 다른 명령과 갈등을 일으키죠. 처음에 리건은 이러한 분열이 온전히 봉합이 되지 않은 상태로 무대에 오릅니다. 세 가지의 목소리는 처음에는 완벽히 분열되어 있지만 영화가 진행될수록 혼재되는 양상을 보입니다.  버드맨과 리건의 목소리가 명확히 혼재되는 시점은 분명, 비평가와 입씨름을 하고 술을 마신 리건이 쓰레기 더미 위에서 잠을 자고 난 다음입니다. 그 후 리건은 버드맨의 목소리를 온전히 받아들이죠. 그 후에 그는 하늘을 날기도 합니다. 당연한 일입니다. 이제까지 애써 부정하고 벗어나려고 했지만 리건은 버드맨이니까요. 또는 버드맨이 리건을 죽음으로 이끈 사자일 수도 있지요. 이냐리투 감독은 그의 전작인 [비우티풀]에서도 주인공 욱스발의 죽은 아버지의 환영을 소환하는 시점에서 새를 등장시킵니다. 어쩌면 버드맨의 운명은 리건은 태어나기도 전에 받은 신탁인지도 모를 일이지요. 그러나 뉘라서 죽음의 신탁에서 자유롭겠습니니까. 버드맨을 보는 또 다른 재미 중 하나는 마치 미로와 같은 무대의 뒷편입니다. 리건의 방, 거울에 붙어 있는 여러 필체의 경구들, 지저분하고 낡은 복도의 벽을 따라 더덕더덕 붙어있는 벽보들은 마치 리건에게 버려진 기억처럼 느껴지죠. 또한 미로를 따라 가면서 만나게 되는 여러 인물들은 아무 곳에도 없다가 갑자기 튀어나온 듯한 인상을 주기도 합니다. 잊고 있다가 갑자기 기억이 나는 사건과 그 사건에 얽힌 인물들처럼 말이죠. 그러므로 도저히 그 구조를 물리적으로 짐작하지 못하게 하는 무대의 뒷편은 리건 자신의 기억인 것처럼 보입니다. 또한 버드맨의 목소리는 리건 자신의 코기토이기도 합니다. 리건이 그토록 벗어나고자 했던 흥행배우 버드맨은 리건에게 어떤 식으로든 소환되고 말죠. 무대에서의 사고로 코가 날아가버린 리건이 붕대를 한 모습은 흡사 버드맨을 닮았고, 붕대를 풀고 난 리건의 얼굴의 멍과 부풀어오른 코 또한 리건을 버드맨처럼 보이게 합니다. 버드맨은 한치의 의심도 없이 리건이 버드맨임을 주장합니다. 무대 뒤를 리건의 (무)의식이라 상정할 때, 리건은 수도없이 (무)의식 속에서 타자와 대화를 나눕니다. 그러나 그는 결코 그 목소리들을 내면화 할 수 없지요. 결국 리건은 자신의 코키토로 돌아갑니다. 그의 존재를 증명해 주는 목소리는 버드맨이니까요.  마이크가 태닝을 하다가 화가 난 리건을 맞이하는 장면에서 마이크의 손에 들린 책은 보르헤스의 [라비린스]입니다. 보르헤스는 [라비린스]라는 제목의 책을 낸 적이 없어 의아했는데, 검색해 보니 그의 단편 모음집인 [픽션들]과 [알레프]를 영어권 편집자가 따로 선하여 출판한 것이라고 합니다. [라비린스]에 실렸는지는 알 수 없지만, 단편집 [알레프] 중에 제가 좋아하는 단편 [죽지 않는 사람]을 이 영화와 연관시켜 읽어보았습니다. 그럴 듯한지는 이 글을 읽으신 여러분의 몫입니다. 내용은 아래와 같습니다. 1926년 뤼생주의 공작부인은 고서적상 카르타필루스에게 포프의 여섯 권짜리 [일리아드]를 구입합니다. 그리고 이 묘한 분위기의 고서적상에게 호기심을 느끼지요. 그녀는 나중에 제우스호의 승객을 통해 카르타필루스가 바다에서 죽었으며 이오스 섬에 묻혔다는 소식을 듣게 됩니다. 그녀는 카르타필루스에게서 산 [일리아드]의 마지막 권에서 원고를 하나 발견하는데 거기에는 재미있는 이야기가 실려있습니다. 그 이야기는 나(화자)의 기억을 따라갑니다. 나는 로마의 장군으로 여러 차례 전쟁에서 승리를 거두기도 하지만, 그 와중에 심한 박탈감을 느끼게 되지요. 그는 전장을 이탈하여 사막을 건너 '죽지않는 사람들의 도시'를 찾아나섭니다. 그 도시는 아득한 강변에 요새와 원형극장과 사원이 즐비한 곳에 세워져 있다고 하는데, 나는 끝없는 사막을 헤메다 나를 따르는 군사를 모두 잃고 정신을 잃고 맙니다. 정신을 차렸을 때는 나는 손이 등뒤로 묶인 채 한 혈거부족의 포로가 되었음을 깨닫습니다. 혈거穴居부족은 뱀을 잡아먹고 돌로 이루어진 조그만 동굴에서 기거하며 말대신 짐승과도 같은 음성언어로 소통합니다. 갈증으로 무모해진 나는 절벽아래 물이 있는 곳으로 몸을 날리고 물을 마신 뒤 그곳을 탈출합니다. 그런데 의아하게도 나를 따르는 혈거부족인이 한 명 있습니다. 나는 그에게 율리시스의 개인 '아르고스'라는 이름을 붙여주며 사람의 말을 가르치려 합니다. 그러나 그 노력은 실패로 돌아갑니다. 나는 사막을 배회한 끝에 동굴 하나와 마주치게 됩니다. 그 동굴은 미로와 이어져 있고 신비한 미로는 시작도 끝도 없지요. 어느 복도의 끝에서 나는 예측지 못한 한 줄기 빛이 떨어지는 것을 보고 그 빛에 이끌려 아주 오래전에 축조된 도시를 발견하게 됩니다. 고색창연하고, 무한하고, 잔악하며, 강박적일 정도로 무분별한 구조물 속에서 나는 또 한번 길을 잃고 맙니다. 뒤엉킨 도시를 빠져나왔을 때쯤 나는 혈거부족이 실은 '죽지 않는 사람들'이며, 내가 마신 물이 영생의 샘물이라는 것과 아르고스라고 이름 붙인 나를 따르던 혈거부족인은 다름 아닌 율리시스라는 것을 알게 됩니다. 영원히 사는 혈거부족인들은 그들의 삶에서 점차 의식과 생각, 언어를 소거해 갔던 것이지요. [모든 지식은 단지 회상에 불과하다]는, 이 단편을 여는 말처럼 혈거부족인이며, 아르고스이며, 율리시스는 갑자기 야만을 벗어던지고 그리스어로 나에게 말을 하기 시작합니다. 나는 그 후에도 새로운 왕국과 새로운 제국들을 돌아다니며 전투에 참가합니다. 그동안 여려 이야기를 필사하기도 하고, 감옥의 안마당에서 체스를 무척 많이 두기도 합니다. 나는 죽지 않는 사람이니까요. 어느 도시에서는 점성학을 가르치기도 하고, 포프의 [일리아드]를 기쁜 마음으로 구독하기도 합니다. 수사학 교수와 시의 기원에 관해 토론을 벌이기도 하죠. 그러다 1921년 어느 항구의 외곽 도시에서 맑은 물이 솟아나는 샘을 발견하고 그 물을 마시지요. 그리고 살을 에는 것과 같은 고통을 느낍니다. 나는 드디어 다시 죽는 존재, 모든 사람과 같은 존재가 된 것이지요. 그날 밤 나는 모든 고뇌를 뒤로하고 새벽녘까지 잠을 잡니다. 일년이 지난 후 나는 내가 한 모험의 이야기를 읽습니다. 그리고 많은 것들이 허구임을 발견합니다. 끝이 가까와지면서 기억의 모습은 남아있지 않고 단지 단어만이 남으며, 운명의 상징인 단어들은 혼동될 수 있다는 사실이 별로 이상하지 않다고 느낍니다. 나는 율리시스처럼 '그 누구도 아닌 사람'이 될 것이며, 나는 모든 사람이 될 것이며, 나는 죽을 것이다, 라고 말하며 이 이야기는 끝을 맺습니다. 보르헤스의 저 이야기처럼 버드맨 또는 리건이라는 서사의 미로에 들어선 관객은 안과 밖이 불분명해 집니다. 마치 미로의 벽은 안과 밖이 불분명 한 것처럼 말입니다. 관객은 리건이 아닌 제 삼자로 이야기에 끌려들어가지만, 어느새 리건이 되어 다른 사람을 바라보기도 하고, 급작스럽게 다시 삼자의 위치로 강등되기도 하지요. 리건은 버드맨이길 거부하지만 그의 (무)의식이라는 미로 속에서 리건은 버드맨으로 돌아가지요. 죽지 않는 사람들의 도시를 찾아 떠난 나는 결국 영생의 샘물을 마시고 율리시스를 만나고, 포프의 [일리아드]를 읽으며, 또 많은 것이 허구임을 발견합니다. 그러므로 리건의 비행이 참이냐 아니냐를 따지는 것은 무의미합니다. 관객은 리건처럼는 죽는 사람이지만 버드맨처럼 죽지 않는 사람이기도 하니까요. 이야기의 미로에 들어선 순간 나는 모든 사람이며, 나는 죽을 것이지만, 또 죽지 않기 때문일 것입니다.
