오늘 오후 1시부터 대학로에서 열리는 민주총궐기 시위가 있었습니다. 4시부터는 광화문에서 진행되었죠. 아마 지금도 많은 사람이 모여있을 겁니다. 제가 갔을 때만 해도 많은 노조와 단체들이 깃발을 나부끼고 있었으니까요. 지하철역에 도착하는 사람들도 많았습니다. 비옷도 불티나게 팔리고 있었고, 호두과자 장사와 꼬치 장사도 호황을 누리고 있었네요. 트위터와 홍차넷을 통해 저 소식을 들었을 때, 가야겠다고 생각했지만 게으른 제 몸을 움직이기에는 그렇게 끌리지가 않더군요. "박근혜의 혼을 빼놓자" 어딘가 참 무서워보이는 문구지 않습니까? 제가 모르는 수많은 단체가 움직인다는 사실에 망설여지기도 했습니다. 가지 않아도 될 수많은 이유가 있었지만 저는 가고 싶었습니다. 가야 된다고 생각했습니다. 굳이 그 감정을 풀어놓자면, 일종의 부채의식이 제일 크겠지요. 이명박 전 서울 시장이 대통령에 취임하고 얼마 안있다가 전국적 규모의 촛불시위가 일어났지만 저는 거기에 참가하지는 않았습니다. 광우병 파동은 사람들의 호들갑으로 밝혀졌고, 현재 촛불은 어떤 광기와 어리석음의 상징으로 적지 않은 사람들에게 남아있지요. 안타깝게도. 그 논쟁을 볼 때마다 저는 무의식적으로 안도합니다. 하마타면, 내가 후회할 짓을 할 뻔 했구나. 하마타면, 욕을 먹을 뻔 했어. 이 방파제 뒤에 숨을 때마다 저는 제 자신한테 질려버리고 맙니다. 정말로 비겁하기 짝이 없잖아요. <송곳>의 이수인이 군대에서 매복훈련을 하던 그 떄, 슬금슬금 기어오던 그림자를 향해 차마 방아쇠를 당기지 못했고 그것이 자신의 병사들이었다는 걸 깨닫고 난 후의 감정과 정확히 일치합니다. (저는 이 글에서 <송곳>의 인용을 많이 하게 될 겁니다) 나의 머뭇거림이, 의도하지 않은 현명함으로 덮어지는 이 상황. 그래서 책임지지 않아도 된다는 이 사실이 오히려 책임을 더 상기시켜요. 나는 신중한 것도 지혜로운 것도 아니고 그저 용기가 없었을 뿐이라는 사실이 더 날카롭게 저를 찌르는 겁니다. 그 동안 세상에는 수많은 사람들의 슬픔과 울분이 있었고 어떤 사람들은 이를 나누고자 했습니다. 나누고 싶어하지 않는 사람들을 향해 소리쳤고, 덮어버리려는 사람들에게는 계속해서 뚜겅을 열어젖혔죠. 촛불 시위 이후에도 시위할 거리는 많았고, 여기저기서 함께 해주라는 목소리들이 있었습니다. 저는 그 때마다 참 화가 났고 슬펐어요. 그렇지만 공교롭게도 그 때마다 저는 바빴고, 귀찮았습니다. 세상은 늘 그렇게 있던 대로 흘러가고.... 그렇지만 저는 여전히 분노할 줄은 알았습니다. 그래서 모니터를 향해 일갈했죠. 이 천하의 파렴치한들아!! 여기 이렇게 분노하는 나의 댓글을, 사람들의 댓글을 보아라....!! 가끔은 밖에 나가서 물대포를 맞고 버스 벽 앞에 가로막힌 사람들과 함께 하는 기분도 들었지만, 이제는 그런 동지의식을 갖지 못해요. 저의 분노는 너무나 안전하고 편안한 곳에서 터지고 있거든요. 먹다 남은 피자를 전자렌지에 돌리면서 저는 경찰을 욕하고 정부를 욕합니다. 그렇게 서릿발 같은 댓글을 남기고 나면, 데워진 피자를 우물거리며 유머 게시판에서 심쿵하게 만드는 고양이 움짤을 보며 껄껄댑니다. 혹시 아나요. 여기 숨어서 활동하는 국정원 직원이 제 댓글을 보고 움찔!! 할 지도 모르죠. 긴장했을지도요? 느지막히 오후 세시쯤 면도를 하며 저는 열심히 생각했습니다. 그래, 가긴 가야겠다, 그런데 나는 왜 가야할까. 박근혜씨를 싫어하는 대회가 열린다면 저는 4강 안에 들 자신이 있습니다. 저는 단 한번도 박근혜씨의 이름 뒤에 대통령이란 직함을 붙인 적이 없습니다. 안티로서의 어떤 곤조가 있죠. ("년"이나 "닭"이라는 비하는 과한 것 같아서 하지 않을 뿐입니다) 그래, 나를 무시하고 있을지도 모르는 박근혜씨를 생각하며 동기의식을 부여하자. "대통령님, 현재 피지알에서 왕천군이란 아이디의 유저가 불온한 댓글들을 달고 있습니다." "내버려두세요, 뭐 사람들이 알지도 못하는 사이트에서 그런 일개 회원이 욕한들 그게 현재 여론에 무슨 위협이 되겠습니까." 어, 그래. 그렇다면 내가 한번 보여주갔어. 내래 이 분노를 현장에서 직접 터트려주겠단 말이야... 저는 좀 삐뚤어진 근성이 있어서 마이너스의 동력으로 움직이는 사람입니다. 좋으니까 뭘 하기보다는, 참을 수 없고, 짜증이 나니까 움직이는 편이죠. 스타를 연습했던 것도 즐거워서였다기보다는 까부는 제 친구를 조져놓지 않으면 견딜 수가 없어서였습니다.  인간에 대한 존중은 두려움에서 나온다, 이 말을 곱씹어봅니다. 아, 그렇다고 제가 박근혜씨에게 두려운 존재가 되어서 존중을 받겠다는 건 아닙니다. 그럴 수나 있겠어요. 이 명제가 참이라면 대우도 성립할 겁니다. 두려워하지 않으면, 존중하지 않는다. 버스랑 물대포 가지고 나를 쫄게 할 거라면, 나는 쫄아주지 않겠어. 박근혜씨를 내가 "존중하지 않음"을 보여주는 겁니다. 짜증을 공포로, 공포를 존중으로 착각하는 사람에게 인상을 좀 쓰고 썩소를 날려줘야겠다는 생각을 합니다. 그래도 좀, 현실성이 부족합니다. 아무리 우연에 우연이 겹쳐도 강철멘탈의 그 분께서 제 까짓게 전하는 기운을 받아들이실리가요. 이번에는 조금 더 마주치기 쉬운 사례들을 떠올려봅니다. "폭도 새끼들 또 광주사태를 못잊고 모여서 부들부들한당께~" "종북좌빨 집합!! 전 장군께서 탱크를 모셔야 저 거지 발싸개들이 저렇게 난리 꼬라지를 안치지" 와우. 효과가 직빵입니다. 면도기를 쥔 손의 움직임에 더 신중하지 않으면 켄신처럼 멋진 흉자욱을 남길지도 모릅니다. 그렇지만 역시 극단적이에요. 이건 제가 싫어한다기보다는, 딱하게 여기는 부류라서 저는 금새 차가워집니다. 거울에 서린 김을 닦아내며, 제가 "극혐"하는 댓글들을 생각해봅니다. "뭐 저런다고 바뀌는 게 있을까요? 이번에도 물대포 맞고 그렇게 끝나겠지요" "참.....저래도 어차피 경찰버스에 막히고 또 언론들은 다른 뉴스 흘리고 말겠죠" "시위한다고 뭐가 바뀌었으면 박근혜는 벌써 열번도 더 하야했을 듯" 눈을 감은 뒤 면도기를 내려놓고 깊은 날숨을 뱉어봅니다. 이게 진짜 할 소리인가? 키보드 워리어새끼들이...... 의욕은 장전되었습니다. 여기에 굳히기 한방으로 제 친구가 실제 했던 말을 떠올려봅니다. "아니, 다 알겠다고. 그런데 키보드로만 그렇게 백날 떠들지 말고 차라리 시위라도 나가든가?" 덥수룩한 수염은 푸르스름한 흔적만 남았습니다. 면도기 광고 모델처럼 제 뺨을 어루만지며 상태를 확인합니다. 출발하면 되겠군요. 저는 좀 교활한 편이라, 많고 많은 군중에서 경찰이 저를 잡았을 시에 둘러댈 변명도 이미 생각해놨습니다. 제가 좋아하는 버거킹 치즈콰트로가 세일 중이었고, 저는 그걸 버거킹 종로지점에서 사먹다가 호기심에 따라갔을 뿐이라구요. 아무리 싼 변호사 수임료라도 3900원보다야 더 나가겠죠. (부당거래를 본 이후 국선변호사는 믿을 수가 없게 되었습니다.) 좀 많이 늦게 출발한데다가, 버스가 서울역까지밖에 가지 않아서 미리 햄버거를 사가지고 목적지에 도착합니다. 서울광장은 이미 비옷들만 가득하고 사람들은 행진을 하고 있습니다. 아, 미리 도착해서 비옷이라도 좀 받아놓을 걸. 그렇지만 괜찮습니다. 전 노란색 점퍼를 입고 있었으니까, 이 색깔 하나만으로도 뭘 주장하는지 충분히 보이지 않습니까. 행진 대열에 아무렇지 않게 섞여듭니다. 그런데 제가 있는 곳의 인파는 앞으로 걸어나가진 않고, 제 옆에서는 남색 조끼를 입은 사람들이 노래하고 춤을 추고 있습니다. 보던대로 빨간 머리띠, 의외로 어린 사람들. 아, 이게 노조로구나. 금속노조인가? 아니면 민노총? 확인은 못했습니다. 아무튼 제가 있던 대열은 노동자 관련 단체였던 건 틀림없습니다. 그런데, 거기에 서 있을 수록 저는 점점 뻘쭘해집니다. 이들의 손짓에, 이들의 구호에 응답을 하지 못하겠던 거죠. "박근혜 퇴진!!!!!!!!" "노동개악 중단하라!!!!!!!" 댓글로는 수도 없이 개탄했는데, 이 간단한 말이 목구멍 바깥으로 나오지 않습니다. 도착한지 얼마 안되서 뻘쭘한 탓일까. 조금 더 있어 보기로 합니다. 배도 고프니 햄버거를 먹습니다. 식었지만 적당히 느끼하고 맛있습니다. 그렇게 햄버거를 먹고 있을 동안 열댓명은 한 쪽에서 열심히 안무를 추고, 어딘가에서 확성기를 타고 목소리가 공기를 때리고, 제 주위의 사람들은 굳게 준 주먹을 리듬에 맞춰 휘두릅니다. 이상합니다. 퀴어 퍼레이드에 갔을 때는 아는 사람 쥐뿔도 없었지만 퍼레이드를 하면서 즐겁게 소리치고 노래도 따라불렀는데. 왜일까요. 왜 나는 이 안에서 "우리"가 될 수 없는 걸까요. 앞으로 가봅니다. 저는 노조가 아니니까 그런 걸지도 모릅니다. 광화문 4차로를 막아선 버스가 보입니다. 호텔쪽까지 가봅니다. 별로 붐비진 않으니 앞으로 가는 건 어렵지 않습니다. 갑자기 매운 공기가 눈코를 확 건드립니다. 어렸을 때 집 근처에서 시위가 자주 일어나 최루탄이 생소하진 않은데, 그래도 좀 놀랐습니다. 후퇴해야겠습니다. 뒤쪽의 인파로 다시 갑니다. 피켓을 들고 있는 아저씨들은 길에서 꼬치를 먹고 술잔을 나눕니다. 투쟁과는 좀 어울리지 않는 생경한 광경에 오른쪽으로 갑니다. 거기에는 어린 학생들이 있습니다. 교복을 입고, 뽀송뽀송한 얼굴을 한 아이들이 하얀색 비옷을 입고 물대포를 보고 있습니다. 앞쪽에서는 무언가를 쩌렁쩌렁 외치는 사람들이 있고, 휘날리는 깃발 아래에서는 저마다의 구호가 울려퍼집니다. 갑자기 구고신 소장의 환영인사가 떠오릅니다.  만화 속 상황보다 훨씬 얌전했는데도, 이 현실이 이렇게 낯설 수가 없습니다. 어느 쪽으로 가야할까..... 어느 쪽에 있어도 여기다 싶은 곳은 없다는 걸 알았습니다. 이건 비옷을 입느냐 안입느냐의 문제는 아니었습니다. 그냥 저한테는, 이 투쟁에 낄 만한 껀덕지가 없었던 거죠. 동탁을 치자고 각국의 제후들이 모였지만, 막사 안으로 들어선 저는 한나라 중원대륙의 사람이 아니었던 겁니다. 소속을 떠나서, 저에게는 여기 모인 사람들과 나눌 수 있는 근본적인 뭔가가 없었던 겁니다. 박근혜씨에 대한 얄팍한 혐오뿐이었어요. 거기에서 소리 치고, 박근혜씨 물러나라고 하는 게 두려운 건 아닌데, 차마 거짓말을 할 수는 없겠더라구요. 여기 모인 이 사람들은 다 뺏긴 것들이 있습니다. 더 이상은 안된다고 느꼈겠죠. 부글거리는 뭔가가 있습니다. 저한테 없는 것이요. 뭐가 됐든 상관없고, 만의 하나 이 시위가 어떤 타격을 입힌다면 그걸로 충분할텐데도, 저는 이 사람들의 구호를 외치지 못했습니다. 만약 여기서 이 사람들을 따라 박근혜 퇴진을 외친다면, 제가 제 자신을 속이는 걸테니까요. 같은 말이어도 그 분노의 정도가 다르니까요. 저는 아직 뭘 뺏긴 적이 없습니다. 물론 눈에 보이는 건 없어도 분명히 국민 모두가 분노할 꺼리는 있죠. 그런데 그런 것 가지고서는 누군가의 진하고 탁한 울분에 스리슬쩍 끼어들 수가 없었습니다. 애초에 엄청난 투쟁을 각오하고 나선 건 아니었습니다. 날도 안좋은데 사람들이 별로 없으면 좀 그러니까, 머릿수 채우는 걸로도 의의가 있지 않을까 정도의 생각이었죠. 우아아아아 하면서 전경들과 몸씨름을 해야 시위다워지는 건 아니지 않습니까. 민주주의는 원래 쪽수 게임이죠. 쪽수를 보태면 그래도 기본은 한다고 생각했는데, 그게 아니더군요. 이건 나 혼자만의 "시민의식" 가지고서는 어떻게 할 수가 없더군요. 굳이 이 자리에 나올 이유도 없는 인간이, 어설픈 책임감으로 뛰어들만큼 만만하지 않았던 겁니다. 뭘 어쩌지도 못하고, 코리아 연대였나, 빨간 깃발 아래에 서있는 사람들 옆에 서서 물대포를 바라보고만 있었습니다. 사진을 찍는 저에게 옆사람이 어느 쪽에서 왔냐고 묻더군요. 의심스러울 만도 합니다. 박근혜 퇴진을 그렇게 외쳐대는데 복창도 안하고, 주머니에 손을 끼워넣은 채로 멍하니 서있다가 사진을 찍는데 미심쩍어보일만도 하죠. 트위터에 올라온 민중총궐기 소식을 보고 왔는데 어디에 있어야 할 지 몰라서 여기 있다고 대답했습니다. 딱히 화답도 냉대도 없는 해명의 시간을 가진 후, 그는 그대로 계속 복창했고 저는 저대로 멍때리다가 자리를 벗어났습니다. 한 삼십분 있었을까요. 결국 햄버거 투어가 되었습니다. 저 없이도 밀려든 사람들로 시위는 맹렬해질테고, 머릿수를 채운들, 말하지도 박수치지도 않는 저는 유의미한 세력은 못됐을 겁니다. 음, 이제 알겠어요. 왜 구고신이 이수인이 노조를 만들고 싶다고 했을 때 말렸었는지. 좋은 사람 되고 싶다고 해서 뭐가 다 되는 건 아닌데. 두 히어로의 말에 부끄러움만 한 가득 안고 갑니다. 저는 그럴 수가 없네요. 좀 아쉬운 것도 있습니다. 누군가에 대한 적개심보다는, 더 나은 세상을 약속해주는 구호였다면, 저 같은 비겁자도 그래도 목소리를 낼 수 있을지도 모르는데. 좀 치사한 민주주의로도 뭘 할 수가 없네요. 저는 묻어가는 것도 못합니다. 뭐가 묻어야 묻히기라도 할텐데, 그게 안되네요. 어쩌면 좋을까요. 아무 깜냥도 없이 들이댔는데, 현실에서는 이렇게 졸렬하게 발만 담그다가 햄버거 봉지조각만 남기고 왔습니다. 그나마 키보드 워리어를 벗어날려고 했지만 제가 될 수 있는 민주시민은 온라인에서나 가능한 걸까요. 화내는 건 의외로 어렵군요. 비겁한 제 자신을 퉁치기 위해서 세월호 유족 분향소에라도 좀 다녀오면 나아질까요. 저는 슬퍼하는 건 잘 하는 편이거든요. 절망도 체념도 성장도 못하고 턱 걸려있는 저는, 앞으로 어떻게 해야 세상이 바뀌었으면 좋겠다는 목소리를 낼 수 있을까요. 모르겠습니다. 어른이 되지 못한 건지, 어른이 되어버린 건지. 언제나 누군가를 존경만 하고, 그렇게 채무자로서 생계를 도모하며 저는 살아갈 수 밖에 없을까요. 저를 대신해, 그리고 스스로를 위해 그렇게 외쳐주시는 분들께 늘 감사하면서도 부끄럽습니다. @ 저는 영화 보러 갑니다. 그래서 내일 오후까지 댓글 못달아요. 내일 조조로도 영화 볼거라서. 007이 소문만큼 재미없지 않았으면 좋겠네요. 2008년 촛불시위가 무지의 결과라고 생각하신다면 사실 지금 시위도 별반 다르지 않습니다. 박근혜 정권에서 하려는 거 다 통과시켜도 별 일 안 생겨요. 갑자기 부당해고가 쏟아지고 중고등학생들이 우경화되는 일 같은 건 없습니다. 예상과 다르게 법 몇 개랑 맞물려서 오히려 정말 청년고용이 늘 수도 있죠. 그런 거 따지자고 시위하는 게 아닙니다. 큰 흐름에 저항하는 것이죠. 2008년 촛불 시위가 광우병이 뭔지 몰라서 몇백만이 선동 당한 걸로 폄하되고 있는 이상 시위에 대한 편견은 지속될 겁니다.
