1940년 5월 독일과 프랑스의 전투는 제2차 세계대전 첫번째 메인이벤트라고 불릴만한 전투입니다. 요약하면  1. 조공 - 독일 B집단군 ( 29개사단, 전차사단3개 ) 이 벨기에와 네덜란드를 통해 프랑스로 침공하는처럼 대규모 기만공격을 함. (독일 공수부대가 글라이더를 이용해 벨기에에 위치한 그 유명한 에방에말요새를 기습한 작전도 이 기만 공격의 일환이었습니다.) 프랑스과 영국 주력군은 벨기에-프랑스 군경을 넘어 벨기에군과 함께 벨기에 영내의 딜방어선으로 독일 침공을 막으려고 이동함. 2. 주공 - 독일 A집단군 ( 45개사단, 전차사단7개 ) 이 독일주력군으로 아르덴숲을 통과하여 상대적으로 방어력이 약한 프랑스 마스 (뮤즈, 뫼즈)강 방어선을 돌파, 조공인 독일 B집단군을 주공으로 알고 이를 방어하기 위해 벨기에의 딜방어선으로 전개한 영국군, 프랑스군을 후방으로부터 포위섬멸. 연합군 정예 (프랑스기동군, 영국대륙원정군) 200여만명 와해. 3. 독일 C집단군 (19개사단) 프랑스 최강 방어요새인 마지노선을 견제하여 많은 프랑스군을 마지노선에 묶어둠. 더 자세히 보면 아래와 같이 요약할 수 있습니다. 이 작전은 전쟁 후 "지헬슈니트 (낫질)" 라 불리게 되었습니다.  1940년 5월10일 독일의 개전으로 시작해서 1940년 6월21일 프랑스는 독일에 항복합니다. 현대 역사상 가장 압도적인 승리로 평가받습니다. 나폴레옹시대의 전통을 이어받아 독일을 견제하던 강력한 육군 강국, 프랑스가 이 전투 이후 제2차세계대전에서 사라져버립니다. 연합군에는 엄청난 손실로 제2차세계대전을 장기화하게 된 이유 중에 하나죠. 당시 독일은 히틀러가 정권을 잡고 1935년 3월 베르사유조약파기, 징병제도입 1936년 3월 비무장지대인 라인란트지역 진군 1938년 3월 오스트리아합병 1939년 3월 체코슬로바키아의 보헤미아, 모리비아지역 합병 1339년 9월 폴란드 침공 1939년 9월 독일이 폴란드를 침공함으로써 드디어 영국과 프랑스는 독일에 선전포고를 합니다. ( 다음해인 1940년 5월까지 영국-프랑스연합군과 독일군은 서로 큰 충돌없이 각각 전쟁을 준비하죠. ) 독일에 대한 선전포고는 히틀러의 예상밖에 일이었고 1차세계대전처럼 양면전쟁이 일어난다는 뜻입니다. 독일에겐 다행히도 폴란드를 침공하는 동안 프랑스가 독일에 본격적인 병력을 투입하지 않았습니다. 그럼에도 불구하고 프랑스, 영국과 달리 해상으로부터 자원수급이 원활하지 않은 독일에게 장기전은 1차대전처럼 필패로 이어질 수 밖에 없었습니다. 또 1차대전의 독일 패배로 베르사유조약에 따라 독일국방군은 10만명으로 축소되었다가 1935년 이후에 베르사유조약파기를 선언하고 전력을 증강 중이어서 독일 군수뇌부는 폴란드와의 개전도 놀라운 일인데 프랑스와는 적어도 1944년 정도는 되어야 어느 정도 싸움이 된다고 생각하고 있었습니다. 하지만 1940년 5월 10일 독일의 침공으로 전격적으로 프랑스와 전쟁이 시작되고 맙니다. 1940년에 독일과 프랑스 (당시 프랑스 동맹군인 영국의 지원군도 포함) 전투 결과는 양쪽 군대의 규모와 질로 설명할 수 없는 특별한 전쟁입니다. 전격전의 신화를 낳았죠. 총력전이라는 현대의 전쟁에서 군사적으로도 경제적으로도 프랑스와 영국에 휠씬 뒤쳐지는 독일이 승리한 매우 특별한 전쟁이었습니다. 적어도 1940년 당시 전력 면에서는 세계 최강의 육군은 프랑스, 세계 최강의 해군은 영국이었습니다. 1940년 승리에 독일 지휘관들조차 어리둥절했고 히틀러 자신도 기적이라고 말했습니다. 독일군에게 절대 예견된 승리가 아니었습니다. 여러가지 원인이 우연히 맞물리면서 독일에 행운을 가져다 준 것 뿐입니다. 1940년 독일은 전격전이라는 이름의 전술로 아르덴삼림지대를 돌파 프랑스군을 격파하고 완벽한 승리를 거두었습니다. 1차대전과 비교해 6년넘게 싸워도 점령하지 못했던 프랑스를 1940년 독일군은 단 6주만에 해냈습니다. 군대의 규모나 무기의 질로만 따진다면 독일군이 더 강하고 프랑스군이 약했냐면 꼭 그렇지도 않습니다. 1940년 5월 당시 육군만 비교해도 프랑스는 대략 600만, 독일은 약 400만명 ( 베르사이유조약으로 육군10만 해군1.5만명에서 급속히 증강) 병력동원하였습니다. 프랑스는 영국정예의 대륙원정군 50만과 네덜란드, 벨기에군의 지원까지 받았습니다. 독일군 독일 : 육군 420만, 공군 100만, 해군 18만, SS무장친위대 10만 - 서부전선에 300만 투입 연합군 프랑스 : 610만 - 이중 독일의 공격이 예상되는 북동부전선에 224만명 배치 영국 : 대륙원정군 50만, 대부분 북동부전선에 배치 네덜란드 : 40만 벨기에 : 65만 실제 전투가 벌어질 당시 독일은 상대적으로 병력집중이 되었지만 공격측임에도 불구하고 방어측인 연합군에 대해 병력은 열세였습니다. 병력 독일 (135개사단) 300만 vs 연합군 (프랑스, 영국, 네덜란드, 벨기에, 151개사단) 400만 야포 독일 7,378 문 vs 연합군 14,000 문 전차 독일 2,439 대 vs 연합군 4,204 대 공군 독일 2,589 대 vs 연합군 1,453 대 ( 후방대기 가용전력은 연합군 훨씬 많았습니다. 연합군은 1차대전과 같이 장기소모전에 대비해 많은 수의 항공기를 예비로 두었습니다. 반면 독일은 대부분 일시에 2/3 이상 투입하죠. 실제 보유한 가용 전투기와 폭격기 대수는 독일 3,578 대 vs 연합군 4,469 대 ) 이 당시 독일에 판터니 티거니 하는 최강전차는 아직 개발되지 않았고 독일과 연합군 둘 다 장난감 같은 전차들이 대다수 ( 독일전차 수량의 2/3가 기관총과 20mm 기관포가 달린 10톤미만의 I, II 전차였습니다. ) 였으며 실제 전력이 되는 전차는 소수에 지나지 않았습니다. 오히려 연합군 전차들이 장갑면에서 훨씬 우수했습니다. 다만 독일 전차들이 훨씬 뛰어난 기동성을 가지고 있었고 모든 전차가 무전기를 갖추고 있어서 연계공격이 가능하여 기동전에 우월했습니다. 전에 코끼리 예를 들었죠. " 코끼리도 14~24Hz의 주파수 범위에서 대화를 나눕니다. 저주파 일수록 멀리 신호가 전달되므로 코끼리는 낮에는 4km 밤에는 10km거리에서 의사소통이 가능하다고 합니다. 코끼리 무리가 군대처럼 움직인다고 하는데 인간이 들을 수 없는 초저주파로 의사소통을 하면서 움직인다고하니 놀라울 따름입니다. 이는 송수신길이가 긴 일종의 무전기를 가지고 있는 것과 같습니다. 마치 2차세계대전 초기 프랑스나 소련을 침공한 독일 전차부대가 자신의 성능이 낮은 전차를 가지고 집단 전술을 사용하여 적군의 우수한 전차들을 각개격파해 물리친 것에 비교할 수 있겠네요. (당시 독일군은 각 전차마다 무전기가 있고 연합군은 부대장 전차에만 무전기가 있었다고 합니다. ) 코끼리가 일대일로 싸워도 무시무시한데 집단전을 하면 거의 무적이겠네요. 백악기 시대의 티라노사우르스와 현재의 코끼리가 한시대에 살았다면 거의 비등하거나 코끼리가 우세하단 말을 들었는데 충분히 근거가 있어 보입니다. " 이를 종합해보면 집중적으로 모든 자원을 투입한 공군은 독일이 우세한 편이었고 육군은 병력과 장비의 질이나 수는 오히려 연합군이 더 우세한 것을 알 수 있습니다. ( 해군은 압도적으로 연합군이 우세했구요.) 다만 독일군의 병력 운영 전술이 연합군에 비해 월등히 뛰어나 이런 특별한 결과가 나온 것 같습니다. 오늘날 많은 국가가 기갑, 기계화부대, 공군의 합동작전을 핵심교리로 채택하고 있습니다. 하지만 1940년 당시 이런 전술은 생소한 것이었습니다. 독일과 프랑스의 대결 직전 1차대전 승전국인 프랑스는 참호전의 교훈으로 더욱 더 참호전에 집중하여 마지노선이라는 거대하고 완벽한 참호를 만들었고 1차대전 패전국인 독일은 참호전을 피하기 위해 1차대전 당시 소규모 돌파부대를 이용해 효과를 본 후티어전술을 더욱 발전시키고 규모를 키워 기동전에 집중하게 되었습니다. 그럼에도 불구하고 지헬슈니트작전은 독일군수뇌부에게도 너무나도 모험적인 시도로 보였습니다. 지헬슈니트 작전을 만든 사람은 당시 A집단군 참모장인 만슈타인 중장 이었습니다. ( 만슈타인은 원수까지 오르며 2차세계대전 최고의 지휘관 중 하나로 뽑히는 사람입니다. 밀덕 사이엔 전신으로도 불리죠. 전술적 차원에서 대부대를 이용한 기동술을 거의 예술적인 기교로 부린다고까지 평가받습니다.) 처음 독일 육군 수뇌부들은 지헬슈니트 작전을 무모하다고 채택하지 않았습니다. 복잡한 군부의 파벌투쟁으로 채택이 아니라 아예 만슈타인중장을 문책했죠. 육군참모총장이 될만한 충분한 연배였던 만슈타인은 좌천되어 아직 편성중 보병부대인 38군단 군단장으로 쫓겨납니다. 원래 계획은 황색작전으로 1차세계대전의 독일 작전 (슐리펜계획) 과 유사합니다. 독일과 프랑스는 오랫동안 전쟁 ( 나폴레옹전쟁, 보불전쟁 등등) 을 해온 사이이므로 서로의 침공로에 대해서 잘 알고 있었습니다. 그만큼 독일과 프랑스의 국경선들은 대비가 잘 되어있었습니다. 그래서 1차대전 때 독일군은 프랑스군의 방비가 상대적으로 약한 벨기에 ( 네덜란드는 2차세계대전과 달리 1차세계대전내내 중립을 지키면서 피해을 입지 않았습니다. ) 쪽으로 침공하여 파리에 근접할 정도로 부분적인 성공을 거두었죠. 그래서 1940년 독일군 수뇌부는 프랑스의 방비가 철저한 독일과 프랑스국경의 마지노선을 정면 공격하는 대신 1차대전처럼 벨기에로 우회할 계획을 수립합니다. 하지만 1940년 1월 황색작전의 세부적인 내용이 비행기추락사고 ( 일명 메헬렌사건 ) 로 연합군측에 넘어갑니다. 프랑스를 주축으로 하는 연합군은 어느 정도 예상했던 독일의 작전이라 더 확신을 가지고 벨기에로 나아가 독일군을 맞이하는 작전 ( 딜-브레다 계획) 으로 대응하게 됩니다. 이에 독일군은 부득이하게 작전을 변경해야한다는 압박을 받았고 히틀러의 지원을 받은 만슈타인의 지헬슈니트작전이 채택되게 됩니다. 이미 작전입안자는 좌천되고 작전은 폐기상태였으나 독일국방군의 수뇌부를 견제하고 싶어하던 히틀러에 의해 전격적으로 지헬슈니트계획은 채택되고 큰 성공을 거두어 그 후 히틀러의 독일국방군에 대한 영향력은 커지게 되었죠. 이렇게 커진 독일 국방군에 대한 히틀러의 영향력은 나중에 독일 패망의 이유가 되기도 합니다. 아무튼 당시 마지못해 채택한 지헬슈니트작전이라 독일군 수뇌부는 계획 자체에 의구심이 가득차 있었고 이런 완벽한 승리를 예측하지도 못했습니다. 심지어 시한부 작전이라 마스강 돌파가 지체되면 작전은 즉각 폐기되고 기갑군단들을 해체해서 보병부대에 재할당해 사용할 예정이었습니다. 소뒷걸음치다 쥐잡는 꼴이라고나 할까요? 우연히 성공한 작전이죠. 작전계획을 수립한 사람을 배제하고 여러가지 제약을 달아서 실패할 뻔한 이 지헬슈니트 작전은 많은 난관에도 불구하고 구데리안 등의 뛰어난 기갑지휘관들에 의해 추진되고 완성되었습니다. 아무튼 당연히 프랑스와 독일은 오랫동안 전쟁을 해온 사이라서 아르덴산림지역을 통과하는 독일의 공격에 대비해서 프랑스도 어느 정도 방비를 하고 있었죠. 아르덴삼림지역에 벨기에 2개사단, 프랑스 4개의 기병사단, 2개 기병여단을 투입 지연전술을 쓰고 스당으로 대표되는 마스강변을 따라 강력한 방어시설을 갖추고 있었습니다. 하지만 독일 전차부대에 "손가락으로 튕기지말고 주먹으로 쳐라" 말이 있는 거처럼 일반적인 공격이 아니라 강력한 공군의 지원을 받으며 전차사단 7개를 쑤셔넣으면서 스당을 돌파하여 대서양해안까지 진격해 벨기에로 진출한 프랑스 주력군의 배후를 차단해버립니다. 특히 이런 전격전은 처음이라 기습으로 불러온 충격이 프랑스군을 패닉을 만들어서 마스강 돌파가 더 용이했습니다. 이 당시 위에 언급한 구데리안이라는 유능한 장군이 기갑군단장으로 3개의 전차사단을 지휘했습니다. 자칫 실패할 수도 있던 지헬슈니트작전에서 독일군 가장 남측이며 최좌익인 스당을 돌파하고 스당남쪽에서 반격해오는 프랑스기갑부대도 와해시켜버리고 대서양까지의 진격을 지휘했습니다. 그 유명한 롬멜장군이 마스강을 돌파해서 진격하던 7개 전차사단 중 하나인 제7전차사단을 지휘했습니다. 벨기에와 프랑스 북부에서 포위되었던 200만 이상의 영국과 프랑스의 군대는 와해되고 모든 장비를 잃고 영국군 10여만명, 프랑스군 수십만명이 됭케르크 통해 영국으로 철수합니다. 됭케르크의 기적이라고 부르는데 이건 기적도 아닙니다. 강력한 영국대륙원정군 50만명은 사실상 당시 영국육군의 전부였고 이 지헬슈니트작전에 의해 완벽하게 붕괴되고 독일군 포로가 되는 걸 피해 단지 10만여명이 영국본토로 몸만 빠져나왔습니다. 영국본토에서 적어도 육군은 무기도 병력도 없는 공백상태가 되어버립니다.
