하도 지인들에게 여행 가려는데 샌프란시스코가 안전한지 알고 싶다고 묻는 질문을 많이 받아서 한국 신문하고 유튜브에 검색을 해봤습니다. 샌프란이 안전하지 않다는 한국 유명 유튜버 동영상과 한글 기사가 최근 한두달 사이에 연달아서 주루룩 나와서 충격이었는데, 다 핵심 메시지가 똑같습니다. "좌파가 망쳤다", "진보이념이 도시를 망하게 했다". 단언하고 말하는데 이건 정치적인 선동이지 실제 도시의 실상이 절대로 아닙니다. 그게 아니더라도 그냥 조회수 올려 돈 벌려는 수준의 영상이고요. 저야말로 애초에 정치야 관심 없고 그냥 돈 벌려고 미국 사는 사람이지만, 내년에 미국 대선과 샌프란시스코 시장 선거가 예정되어 있서 그런지 어이없을 정도로 가짜뉴스가 한국까지도 퍼져나가는 기분입니다. 특히 폭스뉴스나 일론 머스크 타입의 대안우파들은 캘리포니아의 지배적인 정치정당인 민주당을 싫어하니 샌프란시스코를 진보진영이 망쳐놓은 도시로 낙인찍는데 진심이고, 반드시 그래야만 하니까요. 미국이나 한국이나 정치병 걸린건 똑같은거 같습니다. 지역주민으로서 말하자면, 올해 여름 8월정도 지나면서 분위기가 완전히 회복세로 접어든게 체감이 될 정도입니다. 한 골목 건너 계속해서 새로운 카페, 레스토랑, 바가 생기는게 보이고 노숙자들도 현저하게 줄어든게 느껴집니다. 재팬타운에는 새로운 와인바가 생겼고, 금요일엔 포트 메이슨에 야간 푸드트럭 축제가 열리고, 지난 달에는 오라클 파크에 야구 보러 갔다왔는데 도대체 좌파니 진보 어쩌고랑 이게 뭔 상관입니까. 저랑 같은 도시에 살아본게 맞는가 의심스러울 정도입니다. 물론 올해 5월까지는 테크 레이오프가 지속되면서 확실히 도시에 문제가 있었습니다. 그리고 여전히 텐더로인같은 슬럼가는 끔찍하고 유니언 시티 쪽 도심 중앙부는 여전히 별로인 느낌입니다. 월그린이나 작은 마트들에서 칫솔까지 자물쇠를 잠궈놓은건 충격이기도 하고요. 전 이 지역의 나쁜 면들에 대해서 조금도 부인하지 않습니다. 노숙자 보고 피해 걷기도 귀찮고, 더 엄격한 공권력이 집행되기를 저도 이 동네 사는 사람으로서 간절히 바랍니다. 하지만 샌프란시스코는 원래 그런 도시입니다. 샌프란시스코 전체 면적이 서울시의 1/5 수준일 정도로 물리적으로 작은 도시인데 그 안에 화창한 날씨, 언덕, 도시, 안개, 바다, 비싼 물가, IT기업과 다양성까지 우겨놓아 지멋대로 난장판인 곳입니다. 심지어 기후까지도 바다 근처와 내륙이 언덕에 따라 미묘하게 서로 달라서 이 온화한 해양성 기후 속에서도 서울시 구 하나만한 거리에서 서로 기온이 섭씨 10도 넘게 차이나는 날이 있을 정도입니다. San Francisco Bay Area Microclimates라고 구글에 검색해보면 알 수 있습니다. 같은 서울시에서 같은 날에 어떤 동네는 섭씨 20도이고 다른 곳은 30도라고 그러면 믿어지십니까? 미국 도시 중에 가장 복잡한 곳을 서울 강남의 눈으로 보려니 이런 참사가 일어나는게 아닌가 싶습니다. 미국에서 서울을 찾고 서울에서 미국을 찾아봐야 답 안나옵니다. 물리적으로도 사회적으로도 양면적이고 복잡다면한게 도시의 생리이니 그 차이들을 서로 느끼고 자신에게 맞는 장소를 인생 살면서 찾아나가면 되는데 왜 이렇게 서로 못잡아 먹어 안달이요 희화화에 열중인지 모르겠습니다. 저는 서울 안에서조차 급지를 나누고 여기는 상급지요 저기는 말만 서울이지 지방이다 이런 말들을 처음 한국 가서 듣고 어이가 없었습니다. 세계가 만화마냥 스토리가 단순하고 주인공들의 급을 나눌 수 있다면 얼마나 이해하기 쉽겠습니까. 그런데 제가 샌프란시스코에서 월세 400만원 내면서 살아보고 느끼는게, 반대로 미국인들에게 다 쓰러져가는 손바닥만한 서울집이 대지지분이 높고 재건축 가치가 있어 20억이라고 해봤자 절대 이해 못합니다. 여러분도 샌프란시스코에서 월세 400만원 내면서도 저축하고 돈을 번다면 이게 무슨 걸리버 여행기도 아니고 뭘해서 돈을 버나 싶을 겁니다. 원래 서울이나 샌프란이나 그렇게 사는 동네입니다. 이해를 포기하고 즐기기 시작하면 편합니다.
