 이는 저의 주관적인 의견입니다. 저는 최근 사이시옷을 볼 때 마다 '저 사이시옷이 들어가는 게 온당한가?'를 생각하고는 합니다. 이 사이시옷 어쩌고 하는 것은 맞춤법 '규정'이겠지만, 우리 사회에서 이런 것은 으레 '법칙'처럼 여겨지기에, 그 '법칙'과 같은 성격은 없어졌으면 하기에 '사이시옷 법칙'이라고 부르고 싶습니다. 제가 언어(국어)학자는 아니지만, 배운 것과 주워 들은 것을 종합해 본다면, 사잇소리는 '현상' 이었지 '법칙'이 아니었던 것 같습니다. 언어란 것은 사용자 개인, 집단 수준에서 동기화되지 않는 부분이 있다 보니 온갖 불규칙적인 현상이 일어나기 마련입니다. 국어 맞춤법에는 이런 원칙이 있다고 들었습니다: '표기와 발음을 같게 하라'. 언어의 불규칙적인 부분을 학문적으로 정리해서 법칙화하는 것도 중요한 일이겠지만, 현실과 맞지 않는 법칙은 혼란을 낳다가 고쳐지거나 없어지는 것이 순리가 아닐까 하는데요. 그 혼란을 보여주는 것이 첨부한 짤입니다. 최소한 일관적이기는 해야지 않겠습니까? '자릿값, ... 과잣값'이든지, '자리값, ... 과자값'이어야 하죠. 예전 한겨레 신문이었나...? 영부인의 '여사'호칭 논란 때의 어느 뚝심 있는 언론사가 생각나네요. 그와 정 반대에 있는 나약한 객관, 그리고 나약한 주관을 보여주는 장면이라 하고 싶습니다. 저는 '나뭇가지'가 '나무가지'보다 입에 착착 붙어서 다들 그렇게 쓰다 보니 '나뭇가지'가 된 것이지, 다른 대단한 이유는 없다고 생각합니다. '예수님'이 '예숫님'이 아닌 것은 마찬가지로 우리가 그렇게 부르기 때문입니다. 이들은 어떤 규칙에 의해 이렇게 된 것이 아닙니다. 또 찾아 보면 어떤 규칙을 따르는 일반적인 사례로 있다가 어느 순간 고유해지는 것들도 많을 것입니다. 여기서 저는 '모든 반지를 지배하는 단 하나의 반지'는 학문적 시도로는 의미가 있겠지만 현실을 지배하는 방식으로는 있어서는 안 된다고 생각합니다. 사족이지만.. 이 '법칙'을 보면 우리나라가 특히 그런지는 모르겠으나, 어쨌든 살면서 느끼는 건데 '객관'이 곧 '권위'가 되고 그 권위에 기대고 싶어하는 사람들이 많습니다. 더 나아가 '주관'을 죄악시하는 경우도 생겨나죠. 우리 시대의 투기장인 포털 뉴스 댓글에서 싸울 때도 보면 그렇지 않습니까? '내가 마음에 안 드는' 일에 불과한 것을, '저것은 잘못 됐다'고 욕합니다. '내 생각'보다도 '어떤 사실'이 더 권위가 있다고 믿다 보니, 거기에 호소하고 의지하는 것 같습니다. 세상에는 사실만이 중요한 게 아닌 경우도 많거든요. 자기 주관에 당당한 삶을 살아갔으면 좋겠습니다. 그리해야만 다른 주관도 존중하게 되고 사회가 더 살기 좋은 곳으로 변할 수 있지 않을까 합니다.
