https://new.redtea.kr/news/30723 에바종 먹튀 관련 뉴스가 있었는데요, 제가 그 피해자 중에 한 명이 되었습니다. 돌이켜보면 꽤 뚜렷한 신호가 있었고 수상한 냄새를 분명히 맡았음에도 '설마 거기까지..' 하는 예상을 벗어나는 바람에 피해를 좀 입었습니다. 사실 지금 돌이켜 생각해도 예상하기가 좀 어렵긴 했네요. 오랜 기간 안정적으로 영업해온 곳이라 이정도로 갑작스레 먹튀할 거라곤 생각하기 어려웠죠. 한편으론 먹튀플래그.. 를 그나마 캐치한 덕분에 피해를 최소화할 수는 있었던 것은 다행인지도 모르겠습니다. 지난 5월쯤, 올해 칠순을 맞으시는 아버지의 생신 기념으로 가을 가족여행을 계획했습니다. 코로나도 소강상태로 보였고 해서 여행지는 오랜만의 해외인 방콕. 아무래도 부모님을 모시고 가는만큼 숙소도 평소에 비해 꽤 무리해서 골랐습니다. 숙소 급을 많이 높였고 인원상 방 하나로 해결되지도 않다 보니 비용이 만만치 않더군요. 평소에는 호텔 직접예약을 선호하는 편이지만 이 정도 되면 여행사를 통하더라도 가격적으로 조금이나마 나은 예약을 찾아보지 않을 수 없었죠. 여기저기 살펴보니 에바종의 가격과 조건이 제일 좋았습니다. 처음 이용하는 곳이지만 이전부터 이름을 종종 듣던 곳이라 어느 정도의 신뢰성이 담보될 거라고 생각하고 예약했습니다. 10% 정도의 예약금을 에바종에서 바로 결제하고, 나머지 금액은 체크인시 카드로 결제되며, 코시국이니만큼 당연히도 취소가능 옵션이라고 여러 번 강조된 프로모션으로 골랐습니다. 숙박비 총액은 대략 300만원. 예약금은 30만원 가량이었습니다. [여기서 첫 번째 수상한 냄새를 맡습니다. ] 취소 가능이라고 대문짝만하게 써 놓은 상품이었지만, 예약을 진행하면서 환불규정을 꼼꼼하게 체크하다 보니 결제 후 취소나 환불이 불가능한 상품이라고 돼 있는 거죠. 일단 예약진행을 중단하고 고객센터에 (어렵게 연결하여) 확인을 합니다. 기본적으로 환불불가 상품을 주로 판매하던 곳이라 시스템상 의미없는 메시지가 남아 있을 뿐이고 실제로는 체크인 15일전까지는 무료로 취소 환불이 가능한 상품임을 확답받고 통화녹음을 남긴 후 다시 예약을 진행했습니다. 이미 마음속의 신뢰에 약간 금이 가기 시작했지만 가격이 매력적이었고, 내가 충분한 근거를 가지고 있다고 생각했거든요. 이제 에바종에서 결제는 되었고, 에바종측에서 호텔측에 내용을 확인하고 호텔 예약번호를 확정으로 받아들면 무사히 프로세스가 끝나는 겁니다. 여기서 시간이 며칠 걸리면서 약간 불안해지기도 했지만 결국 호텔 예약번호가 떴고, 호텔 사이트에 예약번호로 조회해 보니 잘 조회되는군요. [그런데 두 번째 결정적으로 수상한 일이 생깁니다.] 그 직후에 에바종에서 먼저 전화연락이 왔습니다. '호텔 확정예약번호를 드리기 전에 안내드려야 할 사항'이 있다는 겁니다. 뭔 소리야. 난 이미 예약번호를 받았다고. 하지만 모르는 척 이야기를 한번 들어봅니다. 체크인시 결제가 아니라 예약시 선결제로 조건이 바뀌었다는 겁니다. 이유는 '환율이 어쩌고.. 호텔측 요청이 어쩌고..' 라고 하는데 대충 얼버무립니다. 아니 이런 중대한 변경사항을 일방적으로 통보한다고? 게다가 예약금은 이미 받아놓고, 전액 선결제해야만 호텔 확정예약을 해 주는 것인마냥 인질로 잡아서? 하지만 난 이미 확정예약이 돼있는데? 너 그거 모르고 전화했지? 이 사람들 일처리 스타일 보소? 하는 생각이 들었지만 뭐 굳이 상담직원과 싸울 이유는 없는 것 같고 해서, '자 어디한번 할말 다 해 보시지..' 하는 심정으로 어벙하고 친절한 태도를 유지하면서 직원의 말을 들어봤습니다. 그랬더니 내용이 더 가관이네요. 선결제해야 할 금액은 숙박비 전액인데(할인같은 미끼나 보상도 없이 갑작스레 전액 선결제를 유도한다고?), 현금결제는 그 금액 그대로 에바종 계좌에 입금하시면 되지만 카드결제의 경우 3% 추가 수수료가 붙는다고 합니다. (아니 미친.. 돈을 더 받겠다고? 이렇게까지 대놓고 현금결제를 유도한다고?) 전화받으면서 바로 상황파악이 되더군요. 아.. 이 사람들 현금흐름이 안 좋구나. 지금 최대한 현금을 땡길려고 무리수를 두고 있구나. 그런데 제가 뭐 이 직원이랑 싸워서 뭐하겠습니까. 한참 듣다가 일단 한 가지만 확인했습니다. "제가 이용료를 선결제할지 기존대로 숙박시 결제할지에 대해 선택권이 있습니까?" 그랬더니 또 얼버무리면서 '호텔측 요청이.. 환율이 어쩌고.. 추후에 불리할 수..' 라고 중언부언하더군요. 어쨌든 내게 굳이 선결제해야만 하는 의무가 있는 것은 아닌 걸로 확인해준 셈이죠. "아 네 알겠습니다. 말씀주신 내용 문자로 좀 주시면 고민해 보겠습니다" 하고 끊었습니다. 직원은 제가 현금결제할지 카드결제할지를 고민하는 줄 알고 냅다 반가워하면서 끊고는 해당내용을 문자로 쏴주더군요. 정리된 걸 보니 더 어이가 없었고.. [대처를 해야겠지요] 에바종의 행태를 봐서는 3류 중소여행사가 망하기 직전에 발악하는 느낌이 듭니다. 일단 회사 사정이 안 좋다고 스스로 광고해준 격이 아니겠습니까. 그래서 이 예약을 유지할지 취소할지를 먼저 고민했는데요. 그래도 규모와 역사가 있는데 갑자기 망할 곳은 아니라는 판단 하에, 몇 가지 안전 장치를 만들려고 노력했습니다. 당연히 선결제는 거부해야 했고요. 일단 호텔측에 먼저 직접 연락을 했습니다. 안 되는 영어로 내 앞으로 예약된 사항, 추후 결제예정인 금액 등을 확인했는데, 호텔측에서는 아예 결제사항이나 취소가능여부에 대해서는 에바종측에 일임한 상태로, 자기들은 서드파티에서 알아서 결제된 숙박을 소화만 하는 걸로 표현하더군요. 호텔측에서 개별 고객에게 무슨 선결제를 요구하고 어쩌고 할 상황이 확실히 아닌 것은 확인했습니다. 에바종 사이트에 현금 또는 카드로 선결제하지 않고 '원래의 계약사항대로' 체크인시 잔금을 결제하는 것을 유지하겠다고 1:1로 간략히 남겼습니다. 그랬더니 얼마 뒤 전화가 오더군요. 또 어지러운 말로 중언부언하며 "고갱님.. 이것은 호텔 측의 요청 사항이라.. 그러실 경우 추후 호텔 측과의 커뮤니케이션이.. 언어 문제도.. " 하며 현금 선결제를 유도하길래, "아, 호텔 측과 커뮤니케이션 문제 없을 것 같고요. 저 영어 잘 합니다. 연락해 봤더니 제 숙박에는 문제가 없을 것으로 이야기하던데요." 라고 했더니 갑자기 당황합니다. "호텔 측에 직접 이야기하셨어요? 아.. 네.. 그러면 저희가 이 건은 내부적으로 검토해서 다시 말씀드리겠습니다.." 하고는 전화를 끊고 잠시 후에 그냥 선결제 없이 원래 계약대로 유지하셔도 된다는 연락이 옵니다. 별개로, 저는 이 시점까지 상담직원에게 단 한 번도 목소리를 높이지 않고 유하게 목적 달성에 성공했다는 점을 굉장히 뿌듯해했습니다. ㅋㅋ 이쯤에서 에바종이 나에게 끼칠 수 있는 가장 큰 손해가 무엇인가 고민해 봤는데, 이미 호텔에 잡힌 예약을 무단으로 취소해 버리는 사태 이외에는 딱히 시나리오가 없더군요. 망하려고 하지 않고서야 그럴 일은 없겠지만 혹시나 싶어 호텔측에다가 '내 승인 없이 에바종에서 이 예약을 취소하려고 하면 취소하지 말아달라'고 말해두려 했지만, 생각해보니 이 계약관계에서 저에게 그럴 권한이 없을 것 같아서 그렇게까지는 하지 않았습니다. 아니 뭐 설마 이정도 회사가 진짜로 그렇게 대책없이 망하겠어요? . . . 몇달 후 . . 하지만 그 일이 실제로 일어났습니다. 기사가 뜬 후에 호텔에 제 예약을 확인해보니 예약이 조회되지 않습니다. 에바종이 무단으로 제 예약을 취소한 거죠. 비슷하게 예약한 수많은 사람들의 예약이 취소되었고, 여행카페에는 여행지에 도착해서야 자신의 예약이 취소된 상태임을 알았다는 글도 올라오는군요. 현 상태, 에바종은 제 예약금 30만원을 먹튀한 상황입니다. 그들의 요구대로 순순히 현금 선결제해줬다면(그럴바에야 차라리 예약을 취소했겠지만) 300만원 전액을 먹튀당할뻔 했지만 이걸 잘 막은 거라 해야 할지, 냄새가 나는데도 굳이 똥을 찍어먹어본 거라고 해야 할지.. 일단 에바종 사이트에 취소/환불 요청을 했고(이건 아마 의미없을듯..), 카드사에 예약금 결제분에 대해 이의신청/환불요청을 한 상태입니다. 딱히 큰 금액 당한 것은 아니긴 하지만 살다 보니 이런 일에도 휘말리는군요. 긴 이야기를 쓰다 보니 너무 두서없네요. 여하튼 교훈은 다음과 같습니다.
