발단은 기계 번역을 그대로 갖다 쓴 외국 게임. 여기서 armor를 '기갑'이라고 번역한 데 있었죠. 사실 기갑은 기계화된 장갑 전투 장비, 즉 장갑차나 탱크, 또는 (미래의 물건이지만) 강화복 같은 것을 일컫는 말입니다. 그냥 armor가 아니라 mechanized armor, 또는 mobilized armor라는 뜻이죠. 이것을 그냥 방어용 부품 armor의 번역어로 채택했으므로 많이 거슬릴 수밖에 없었습니다. 그래서 한국어 번역을 해주겠다고 자원하고, 직접 번역을 하면서 어떤 말이 가장 어울릴지 생각해 보았습니다. Armor를 번역하는 가장 흔한 말은 장갑 (裝甲)입니다. 그러나 이것은 손에 끼는 장갑과 헷갈리는 문제가 있습니다. 실제로 예전에 개발했던 로봇 게임에서, 기획서에 그냥 '장갑'이라고만 써 놨더니 아티스트가 벙어리 장갑을 그려온 적이 있을 정도죠. ('그리면서 이상하다고 생각 안 했어요?' '이상하긴 했는데 로봇도 손은 있으니까...') 거기다 장갑은 일본에서 armor를 번역하며 엉터리로 만든 말이라 개인적으로 마음에 안 드는 말입니다. 뜻 풀이를 해 보면 ‘갑옷을 걸치다’라는 동사여서, 명사인 armor에 대한 올바른 번역이라고 할 수 없거든요. 일본인들은 한자의 하나하나의 뜻은 잘 알지만 사용법(중국어 문법)은 잘 몰라서, 2글자 이상을 붙여 놓으면 말이 안 되는 단어를 만들어 쓰는 경우가 많습니다. 특히 서양 문물을 들여오던 개화기 때 이렇게 만들어낸 한자어가 많고, '장갑'도 그 가운데 하나죠. 그래서, 한자 종주국인 중국에서는 어떻게 쓰는지 알고 싶어 구글 번역기로 Armor를 중국어로 번역해 봤습니다. 회갑(盔甲), 갑(甲), 개(鎧), 철갑(鐵甲) 같은 여러 단어들이 나오지만 역시나 일본식 한자어 裝甲은 없네요. 한편 우리나라 고대 역사서에는 주로 개(鎧)라는 말을 쓰고 갑(甲)도 많이 쓰입니다. 하지만 한 음절 단어는 동음이의어가 많아서 쓰기 좀 그렇죠. 특히 '개'는... 패판(棑板)이라는 말도 있는데, 이것은 아이템 종류 말고 방어력이라는 스탯으로도 쓰이는 게임 속 용도와 맞지 않는 단점이 있습니다. 그래서 그 둘을 붙인 개갑(鎧甲)이라는 말을 쓰기로 했습니다. 거의 안 쓰이기는 하지만 엄연히 사전에도 등재되어 있는 단어고, '장갑'처럼 다른 단어와 헷갈릴 일도 적으니까요. 농사 용어로 개갑 (開匣)이 있긴 한데 어차피 그쪽 분야에서만 쓰이는 전문 용어인데다, 군사 용어 개갑보다도 사용량이 적을 정도. 그렇게 번역해서 게임사에 넘긴 지 2년이 지난 결과, 지금은 완전히 정착해서 이 게임을 하는 모든 한국인들이 '개갑'이라고 부르기 시작했습니다. 그러고 나니까 이 번역어가 좀 더 널리 퍼져나가서, 일본식 한자어 '장갑'을 완전히 대체했으면 좋겠다는 소박한 욕망이 생기네요.
