<D.P> 열풍은 선풍적이라는 식상한 말보단 태풍에 가까웠다고 해야할 것 같습니다. 군대 이야기, 그것도 태양의 후예 같은 것도 아닌 암울하기 짝이 없는 주제로 이정도의 파급력을 낸 것은 분명 기념비적인 일입니다. 원작 만화를 몇번이나 반복해 읽으며 이 걸작이 더 빛을 보지 못한 것을 아쉬워했던 저로서도 뿌듯한 일이었죠. 그러나 시간이 조금 지난 지금 제가 내린 결론은 이 드라마는 인상깊은 드라마지만 '잘 만들어진' 드라마는 아니구나, 하는 것입니다. 첫번째, 주인공의 포지션. <D.P>의 주인공은 원작 만화의 군대 물정 다 아는 시커먼 상꺾이 아니라 표정관리 못하고 단체생활에서 성질 못죽이는 열혈계 이병으로 나오죠. 드라마라는 매체 특성상 캐릭터가 바뀌는 것 자체는 상관이 없습니다. 문제는 원작에서 많은 부분을 그대로 따온 바람에 바뀐 안준호 캐릭터의 설득력이 떨어졌다는 거죠. 원작처럼 안준호는 내리갈굼을 커트합니다. 상병이 아니라 이병이! 하극상 이야기가 아니라 조석봉에게 '우리 이러지 않기로 했잖습니까'라고 말하는 부분이 너무 어색하단 겁니다. 옳든 그르든 100일 휴가나 나갔을까 싶은 애기가 할 말이 아닌 겁니다. 원작에서 부조리와 내리갈굼에 고뇌하고 무력감을 느끼는 안준호의 모습에 이입되는 건 부조리에 녹아든 동기와의 대화가 소름끼칠 정도로 현실적이었기 때문입니다. '신병 커버쳐줬다고 잘난 줄 알지 마라. 걔 너 활동 나가면 더 털렸다. 너 걔 끝까지 책임질거 아니지 않냐.' 가해자를 천연덕스럽게 바꿔버리는 이 화법이 가해자 혹은 피해자 혹은 방관자였을 독자를 찌릿하게 자극하는 반면, 드라마의 상황은 냉정하게 보면 지 잘난 맛에 사는 후임이 유약한 맞선임 잡아먹는 것에 불과하죠. 아닌 말로 DP조 첫 사수도 줘패버렸으면서 본원인 황장수는 왜 못건드렸답니까. 20대 초반에 베테랑 강력계 형사를 방불케하는 능력을 선보이는 상병 안준호보다 열혈파 풋내기 이병 안준호의 우당탕쿠당탕 디피 생활이 더 먹힐 소재고 현실적이다 라는 지적도 타당하지만 최소 일병은 달고 이야기를 시작하거나 안준호 캐릭터를 완전히 재창조했어야 했습니다. 두번째, 원작에 지나치게 기대는 감독. <D.P>는 '어 이거 원작에서 봤던건데' 하는 장면이 엄청 많이 나옵니다. 좋게 말하면 원작 재현도가 높은 거지만 위에서 말했듯이 캐릭터만 똑 떼놓고 변했기에 딱히 그렇지도 않고, 오히려 감독의 오리지널리티에 의구심을 품게 됩니다. 특히 3화 "그 여자"는 기본 구도는 원작에서 따왔으면서 변주를 한 것이 갑자기 <타짜>를 만들어버렸죠. 화사한 여배우들이 나오면서 분위기 전환은 됐지만요. 3화는 가장 불성실한 에피소드지만 전체적인 면에서 지적할만한 건 오리지널 캐릭터들의 완성도 내지 식상함입니다. 임지섭 대위는 힘 빡 준 것에 비해 솔직히 왜 있는지도 모르겠는 캐릭터고, 한호열 상병은 어디서 본 말을 빌리자면 또 고광렬입니다. 간부들 회동씬으로 바뀌면 드라마는 <내부자들>이 됩니다. 감독의 전작이 F1 그 대사로 유명한 <뺑반>이라고 놀라는 반응이 있던데 저는 <뺑반>은 보지 않았지만 대충 명대사병 걸린 사람이구나하고 이해하면 <D.P>의 연출도 납득이 갑니다. 개별 화든 전체 흐름이든 플롯은 대충 정해져있고, 오리지널한 상황은 클리셰로 뒤덮이고, 그러면 연출자 입장에서 자아를 내보일 가장 쉬운 방법은 명대사 한방인 거겠죠. 그런데 그 명대사조차도 원작에서 토씨하나 다르지 않게 옮겨옵니다. 그러면 대사로 까일 일은 없겠으나, 솔직히 게으른 선택이라는 생각을 지울 수 없습니다. 대부분의 영상물이 원작을 너무 바꿔서 문제라는 마당에 원작을 너무 차용한게 문제인 작품은 또 처음이네요. 6화라는 짧은 화수에 원작의 많은 부분을 담고자 하다보니 전반적으로 캐릭터들이 플롯을 이끄는 게 아니라 플롯에 캐릭터들이 이끌리는 느낌도 강하고요. '수통도 안바뀌는데 (군대가) 무슨...' 이 대사는 작중 최고 명대사로 꼽힙니다. 만화에서 이 문답이 흡입력 있었던 건 투신하는 탈영병인 오성환 이병이 친구인 군종병(병장)을 찾아가 조언을 구하는 나름의 노력을 했지만 '견딜 수 있는 것은 견딜 수 있는 것이 아니다'라는 개소리나 들었다는, 마음의 편지를 투고했지만 간부가 그 개봉을 (가혹행위 일당인) 병사한테 떠넘겨서 상황만 악화되었을 뿐이라는 사전 배경이 있었고, 그를 통해 독자는 내부에서의 변화를 기대할 수 없는 군부대라는 환경에 자연스럽게 이입하게 되기 때문입니다. 여기서 수통 얘기가 나오는 건 '블랙팬서는 대대로 와칸다의 수호자였다' 같은 간접적 언급이죠. 실제로 실망한 건 바뀌지 않는 수통때문이 아니지만, 외부인인 DP조에게 얘기를 해서 뭐하냐 같은 감정인거죠. 그런데 드라마에서 조석봉은 그러한 묘사가 보이지 않으니, 진짜로 군대가 안바뀔 근거를 수통에서 찾는 셈이 됩니다. 시청자가 여기 공감하는 것은 '군대는 바뀌지 않는다'라는 사전 전제를 공유하고 있기 때문이지 작품 내적으로만 따지면 좀 성급한 결론이죠. 복수의 정당성과는 별개로 마음의 편지나 사단 신고센터 같은 곳에 투고했다 실패하는 묘사도 없으니, 연출자가 어떻게든 클라이맥스에 이 대사를 넣고자 하는 의지가 있었음이 강하게 느껴집니다. 5~6화의 고어한 연출 또한 결론을 위해 상황을 꾸겨넣는, 좋지 않은 작품의 전형적인 모습이라 생각합니다. 곁다리지만 논란이 되었던 황장수 세븐일레븐 알바씬도 그러한 작품의 전체적인 분위기를 방증하고요. 종합해보죠. 그래도 많은 사람들이 인상깊고 재밌게 본 드라마를 원작 팬이라는 입장에 서서 너무 박하게 보는 것 아니냐, 할수도 있겠습니다. 그러나 <D.P>의 두 주연이 지닌 근본적인 문제는 '얘들이 군인 느낌이 안난다'는 겁니다. 드라마건 원작 만화건 이걸 군대 부조리 고발물으로만 이해하는 것은 반쪽짜리 감상이라고 봅니다. 탈영병을 잡는 것도 같은 병사, 똑같이 부조리에 시달리고 국가에겐 인간보단 자원으로 취급받는 처지에 회유와 체포에 나서야한다는 상황 자체가 지닌 부조리함이 <D.P>라는 제목이 내포한 바일 것입니다. 그러나 드라마에선 이들이 병사 신분이라는 사실이 그저 양념에 불과합니다. 햇병아리 안준호가 상병들 상뱀이라고 부르는거 되게 어색합니다. 얘들이 병사라는 한계점에 발목을 잡히는 부분이 없어요. 그것이 오히려 이들을 극의 주역이 아닌 관측자로 만듭니다. 이들이 만약 경찰이라면, 즉 월급받고 커리어가 쌓이는 입장이라면 체포에 열정적인 이유를 굳이 설명하지 않아도 됩니다. 하지만 병사들은 남는게 하나도 없습니다. 설명이 있긴 하죠. 근무태만하다 첫 임무를 탈영병의 사망으로 놓친 트라우마라는 원작 설정. 하지만 원작에선 그뿐만이 아니에요. 개인 휴가까지 탈영병 추적에 쓰는 안준호의 미친 짓을, 그 자신 역시 가족의 굴레라는 짐에서 탈주하는 입장이라는 묘사를 통해 설득력을 배가하거든요. 드라마에도 같은 설정이 있다지만 그 묘사는 '안준호의 가정 환경이 안 좋음. 휴가 뺀 건 간부의 부조리임.' 이라는 선에서 그치니 비교가 안되고요. 그냥 안준호 개인사는 빼버리거나 시즌2로 미뤘어야 했다고 봅니다. 작품 외적으로 아쉬운 부분은 영상화가 너무 늦게 되었다는 것입니다. 원작 만화가 연재된 시기는 2015년이고 한 해 전엔 군 가혹행위 역사에 잊혀지지 않을 두 사건이 있었죠. 그리고 웹툰이 영상화 되기까지 6년 동안, 이 시기는 군대 생활 환경에 있어 그 어떤 시기보다도 큰 변화가 있었던 때였고요. 솔직히, 가장 바뀌지 않는 것은 군대나 국방부보다 '군대는 바뀌지 않는다'는 고정관념을 가진, 그리고 고정관념을 유지하고자 하는 사람들일지도 모른다는 생각이 듭니다. 군탈체포조는 이미 없어지는 추세였고 이번에 공식적으로 폐지가 되었다는데도 'DP 뜨니까 부랴부랴 ㅉㅉ' 하는 사람들의 반응을 보면서 그런것을 느낍니다. 물론 얼마 전에 보도도 되었듯이 여전히 군 내 부조리와 가혹행위가 핸드폰 쥐어주고 월급 늘었다고 없어지지 않을 것이고(그것은 모병제를 한다 해도 변하지 않을 것이고) 상당수 간부들의 인식 역시 수준 이하일 것입니다. 그러나 군 이슈를 둘러보며 제가 느끼는 것은 (자기 기억 속의) 국방부와 간부를 비난하는 모습이 현재 군복무를 하는 젊은이들에게 지지의 목소리라기보단 인생에서 만만히 욕할 상대 찾는 것에 가까운, 말하자면 적대적 공생관계라는 감상입니다. 그 모습은 입으로는 NC를 누구보다 욕하지만 손은 킹쩔수 없지 하며 결제버튼을 누르는 린저씨들과 비슷한 걸지도요. 원작 만화의 마지막은 이렇게 말합니다. '이제 당신도 목격자야.' 드라마는 같은 메세지를 전달했을까요? 저는 회의적입니다. 2. 안준호의 캐릭터 설정
안준호가 박성우 상병을 팬 거? 멘탈 날라가서 한 충동행위죠. 피씨방에서 한호열 상병한테 시발이라고 한거? 술 마시고 한 충동행위죠. 충동행위는 이 뿐이 아닙니다. 탈영한 조석봉이 황장수 조지러 갈 때, 버스터미널에서 사고가 났는데도 복귀 안 하고 쫓아갔죠. 안준호는 일관적으로 충동적으로 행동합니다. 그 행동의 근거는 지극히 자기 자신만의 판단이구요. 이 드라마에서 일관적으로 보여주는건 안준호가 상당히 충동적인 캐릭터라는 겁니다. 황장수한테는 못 개기는데 왜 다른 애들한테는 개겨? 라고 물으면 변론할 수 있죠. 안준호는 맨정신에는 지극히 정상적이면서도 맨정신이 아닐 때는 지 맘대로 하는 캐릭터라는거.
3. 임지섭 대위의 역할
첫 등장에서는 승진에 몰두하는 대위 역할이었죠. 간부가 병사한테 가불기거는 모습은 현역으로 근무한 사람들이라면 누구나 겪어봤을 거구요. 그런 임지섭 대위가 마지막에는 그동안 박범구 중사하고 반목하던것도 뒤로하고 지원해주죠. 왜? 자기가 봐도 선을 넘었다고 생각해서요. 허기영 일병이 말하잖습니까. '이거 괜찮은겁니까?' '괜찮겠냐, 더 안 괜찮아질까봐 그러는거지.' 임지섭 대위는 군대라는 조직이 갖는 한계를 현실적으로 보여주는 캐릭터입니다. 조직 세계에 편승해서 편안하게 살고 싶었지만 그럴 수 없는 이 군대라는 조직의 한계를 가장 가까이에서 보여주는 캐릭터요.
4. 한호열 = 고광렬
이면 안 되나요? 고광렬을 연상케 하는 능글능글한 캐릭터가 타짜 2006 이후로 처음으로 등장했습니다. 대충 21세 ~ 23세 라고 생각해보죠. 이런 캐릭터를 경험해본 적 없나요? 군대에서는 온갖 캐릭터를 경험할 수 있죠. D.P.의 캐릭터들에 사람들이 호응을 보내는건 저마다 경험해봤기 때문입니다. 아 맞아 나 군대에 있을 때도 저런 애 있었어.
5. 문제의 그 수통
일단, 수통 드립은 김보통 작가가 처음 한 얘기가 아닙니다. 제가 2010년에 입대 했는데 이미 그 전부터 인터넷에서는 625 전쟁 당시 수통을 넘어선 노르망디 상률 때 만들어진 수통 드립이 있었고 군대 갔다온 사람이 나도 봤다 나도 봤다 하면서 확대 재생산 됐던 이야기입니다. 대부분의 물자는 창고에 쳐박혀서 전시에 불출된다는 행보관의 말만 믿고 복무시에는 그냥 이게 맞는건가보다 하면서 써왔던거에요. 그게 D.P.에서 다시 나오니까 그 부분에서 사람들이 공감대를 느낀거죠.
6. 근본적인 문제 : 얘네들이 군인 느낌이 안 난다.
왜요? 제가 군대에서 경험한 건 상상하는 것 이상의 사람을 경험할 수 있다는 사실이었습니다. 제 경험상, 안준호라는 캐릭터는 선임병들의 마음에 드는 싹싹한 인물은 아닐지라도 털려고 보면 막상 털 것이 없어서 굳이 트집을 잡아야 하는 캐릭터입니다. 작업을 잘 하는 모습이 나오지는 않았지만, 입대 전 알바할 때 하고 싶은 말은 하는 모습을 보여주는 장면에서 여차하면 들이받는다는것도 보여줬구요. 군대에서 당하는 사람들은 들이박는 사람이 아니라 갈구는대로 갈굼먹고 위축되는 사람들이죠. 끝까지 들이박는 사람들을 끝까지 갈구는 선임들도 많지 않습니다. 왜? 피곤하니까. 저 피곤한 놈 건드렸다가 잘못하면 내가 피볼거 같으니까. 과연 헌병대 내에서 안준호랑 계급장 떼고 다이다이 쳤을 때 안준호를 제압할 인물이 몇이나 있을까요? 황장수 제껴두고 류이강은 아니겠죠? 얘네들 고작해봐야 20대 초반이고 그나마 군대니까 후임들한테 거들먹거리지 계급장 떼고 붙었을 때 질거 같으면 따로 불러서 얘기합니다. 애들 앞에서 체면은 세워달라고.
안준호가 상병들 보고 상뱀이라고 하는건 충분히 가능한 일이구요, 오히려 현실성이 없는건 야간에 막사 뒤로 불러서 애들 갈구는데 신병들이 고래고래 소리 지르는 모습이죠. 누가 그렇게 티내면서 갈구나요. 오히려 소리내지말라고 하지.
7. 체포에 열정적인 이유 : 부대에 없어도 되는 이유인데 왜 열심히 안 하죠?
박성우는 애초에 아버지가 구청장이었고 군대 삐대다 나가려고 한 사람이니까 열외라고 합시다. 한호열, 안준호가 D.P. 안 하면 부대에 짱박혀 있어야 되는데, 하루라도 더 나가려면 실적 높여야 되는게 당연한거 아닌가요? 이 친구들에게는 자연적으로 인센티브가 발생하는 겁니다. 자기들이 D.P.를 해야만 하는 이유를 입증해야만 계속 D.P.를 할 수 있으니까요.
8. 작품 외적으로 아쉬운 부분은 영상화가 너무 늦게 되었다는 것입니다.
만화의 마지막은 이렇게 말합니다. '이제 당신도 방관자야.'. 드라마는 같은 메세지를 전달했을까요? 저는 회의적입니다.
최근에도 군대 가혹행위가 기사화됐죠. 영상화가 너무 늦게 되었다? 저는 동의하지 않습니다. 이것은 현재 진행형입니다. 그래서 시청자들이 열광하는 것이구요.
"이제 당신도 방관자야."라는 메시지에 대해서는 전적으로 동의합니다. 그런데 드라마는 같은 메세지를 전달했을까요? 당연하죠. 사람들이 왜 D.P.에 열광할까요? 그 짧은 순간에 조석봉이라는 인물이 무너지는 과정에 대해서 공감했으니까요.
저는 이 드라마가 잘 만들어진 드라마가 아니라는 것에 대해서는 일정부분 공감합니다. 많은 부분을 대한민국 현역으로 근무한 사람들의 경험에 근거해서 '너네도 이런 경험 있잖아. 알고 있지? 이해하지?'하며 퉁치고 넘어가는 부분이 있어요. 하지만 메시지가 전달이 안 되었나하면 절대적으로 그건 아닙니다. 왜냐하면 앞서 말한 대한민국 현역으로 근무한 사람들이 공통적으로 갖고 있는 경험이라는 부분이 있으니까요. 너네도 방관자야라는 메시지는 그 상황에 있었던 사람들에게만 유효합니다.
우리나라 인구의 절반 이상은 이 모순을 경험하지 않았고 그렇기 때문에 '군대라는 조직의 이면에는 이런 부조리한 모습이 있다.'라는 메시지만을 전달할 수 밖에 없죠.
