보아온 바 채식주의자들은 크게 두 가지 깨달음으로 인해 채식을 시작하고 또 전파하는 것 같습니다. 1) 공장식 대량 도축 체제로 야기되는 자연과의 원초적 연결감의 박탈 및 환경 파괴 2) 더 많은 고기를 목표하는 식습관이 신체 기능 유지 및 수명 연장(즉, 건강)에 좋지 못하다는 이론 1)에 있어서, 저는 채식주의자들의 의의를 대체로 부정하지 않습니다. 이성이 감성보다 우월하다는 것은 근현대인의 오랜 오만이며 다양한 곳에서 깊은 연결감을 느끼는 삶이 그렇지 못한 삶보다 풍성한 것임은 자명합니다. 그러고보니 동물을 키워본 적은 없지만 저도 연결감에 대한 작은 기억이 있네요. 어릴 때 가족들과 횟집을 갔는데 광어인지 무언지 모를 어떤 생선이, 그러니까 얼음별 대모험에 나오는 그 우주 생선 모습으로 접시에 내어져, 여전히 눈과 입을 끔뻑이며 스스로 살아있음을 미약하지만 강렬하게 어필하는 모습, 다른 사람들은 아무렇지 않게 떠들며 그 포를 뜬 살을 젓가락으로 집어가는 모습에서 분명 '이건 아닌 거 같다'는 느낌을 받았음을 기억합니다. 그건 단순히 측은지심이나 혐오감이라고 단정할 수 없는 감정이었죠. 물론 그 뒤로 회를 안 먹게 되었다거나 그런 건 아닙니다. (그런 형태로 내어져온 회는 그 이후 본 적이 없긴 하네요) 단지 나에게도 계기가 될 수 있는 사건이 있었고 내가 택한 방향은 채식주의자들과 반대로 (의식적으로) 연결감을 떼어놓는 쪽이었지만, 적어도 벼가ㅡ특정 과정을 거쳐ㅡ밥이 된다는 사실은 아는 사람이란 얘기입니다. 아무튼 저는 동물, 나아가 자연에 대해 연결감을 갖는 사람을 절대 괄시하지 않습니다. 오히려 내가 못가진 부분을 가진 사람이라고 생각하죠. 그럼에도 불구하고 저에게 있어 육식이 스스로 저버리지 못해 유지하는 관성적 삶으로 격하될 일은 없습니다. 단적으로 말해 고기는 이 파편화된 세계와 비루한 나의 삶에 있어 몇 안되는(그리고 가장 큰) 연결감을 선사하는 매개체이기 때문입니다. 고립되고 우울한 어떤 사람이 식욕 충동을 조절하지 못하는 경우는 흔하죠. 아무 생각 없이 사는 사람도 뭘 먹을지는 고민합니다. 먹는 것에조차 관심이 없어진다면 그건 정말 정서적으로 위험한 상태일 수 있습니다. 먹는 걸로 스트레스를 푼다는 말은 곧 그 어떤 힘든 상황에 처해있는 사람조차도 식사시간 만큼은 끝까지 남을 안도의 시간이라는 뜻입니다. 그리고 대체로 고기가 주는 즐거움은 빈자도 부자도 노인도 젊은이도 모두에게 해당하는 공통 분모입니다. 그런 즐거움을 조금 줄여 세계의 유지에 기여하자는 주장이 전혀 터무니없다고 여기지 않습니다. 하지만 그건 어떤 사람들만 해낼 수 있는 조건입니다. 바로 삶의 다른 영역에서 세계와의 연결감을 얻을 수 있는 사람들 말입니다. 따라서 이것은 계급의 문제입니다. 삶이 다른 곳에서 이미 충만한데 돈까스 대신 샐러드를 먹는다고 해서 무슨 상관이겠습니까? 그러나 어떤 사람에겐 한 주나 한 달에 한 번 먹는 돈까스가, 국밥이, 삼겹살이, 치킨이 삶의 가장 소중한 순간일 수 있는 것입니다. 삶을 변화하는 것은 모두에게나 같은 값을 치르는 일이 아닌 것입니다. 여담이지만 게임에 대해서도 같은 생각을 합니다. 온라인 게임이 유일한 스트레스 해소 창구인 건 솔직히 사회적으로나 개인적으로나 그리 좋은 징조는 아닙니다. 그래서 어떤 사람들은 말합니다. 야외 활동을 하고 누군가를 대면해서 실제로 만나라고. 그게 여러 이유로 안되는 사람들이 게임에 더 몰두할 수 밖에 없는 건데 말입니다. 본질을 외면했기 때문에 이 같은 당위는 곁다리에 맴돌 수 밖에 없는 것이죠. 따라서 2)와 같은, 채식이 건강식이라는 주장 역시 사실 여하를 떠나 곁다리적 관점이라고 봅니다. 물론 그건 '고기를 먹어야 건강하다'라는 고정관념에 대한 반발이고 실제로 엘리트급 운동선수들은 붉은 고기를 식단에서 배제하기도 하죠. 그러나 놀랍게도, 우리 평범한 사람들은 건강한 식단에 그렇게까지 관심이 없습니다. 건강식이라고 뱀술을 타 마시고 이상한 보조식품을 사 먹는 건 실제 효능이 아니라 건강식(괴식)을 구하는 모습에서 나오는 자기만족을 위함입니다. 고기도 마찬가지입니다. 조코비치가 글루텐 프리 식단을 한다는 둥, 르브론이 돼지고기를 먹지 않는다는 둥, 유명 선수나 연예인 누가 비건이라는 둥 하는 얘기는 헬창들이나 관심있을 소리고 일반인들이 '고기를 먹어야 힘이 난다'는 말을 하는 건 그냥 고기가 먹고 싶기 때문입니다. 실제론 고기는 '이 X같은 세상의 한 줌 위안이 되는' 정서 안정을 위해, 같이 먹는 이들과의 교감을 위해 섭취하는 것입니다. 전부는 아닐지라도 고기를 안 먹고 20년 더 사는 삶보다 고기를 양껏 먹고 20년 덜 살아도 된다는 사람은 많습니다. 사실 보통 사람들에게 건강이란 신체 기능의 최적화가 아닌 단지 고통의 회피만을 의미하며 장수가 그 필요조건인 것은 아닙니다. 아무튼 지금 채식주의가 본질적인 변화를 불러오지 못한다고 비판하고 있지만 본질적인 변화를 불러올 수 있다고 믿는 사람들이 늘어남에 따라 상당 부분 세상이 변화한 것도 사실입니다. 10~15년 전을 생각해보면 채식주의는 편식이나 유난으로 매도되었고 비건 식당도, 식단도 거의 없었으며 채식주의자들은 츄라이 츄라이에 시달려야 했죠. 채식주의가 비판의 대상이 되었다는 사실은 그것이 사회적으로 진지하게 논의될 주제가 되었음을 의미합니다. 왜 채식하고 싶지도 않은데 강제하냐 라는 말은 웃깁니다. 채식주의를 동등한 삶의 방식으로 인정한다면 일반식주의자들이 평생 당할 강요보다 채식주의자들이 이미 더 많은 강요를 더 당해왔음을 부정할 순 없기 때문입니다. 그렇지 않다는 건 결국 나에게 방해 안되게 짜져있으란 말 밖엔 되지 않는 거죠. 그리고 '나에게 방해 안되게 점진적으로 일어나는 변화' 따윈 존재하지 않습니다. 요컨대 채식주의에 대한 동의/비동의에 앞서 그런 격한 비난 자체가 이미 시대에 뒤떨어졌음을 의미합니다. 좋건 싫건 이제는 대등하게 대해 주어야 될 이념에 대할 태도가 아닙니다. 이를테면 금주법과의 비교는 언어도단입니다. 금주법은 술을 제조하고 판매하는 것을 금하는 법입니다. 굳이 비교하자면 주창하는 논리가 당위에 기대고 있어서 그렇지 술/담배의 마이너화에 빗대는 게 더 맞습니다. 인간의 욕망은 통제의 대상이 아니라는 말을 진지하게 하는 사람은 이제껏 살면서 실제로 마주해본적 없는 수준의 초자유주의자이거나, 세상사를 한꺼풀도 모르는 애송이거나 둘 중 하나일 것입니다. 어느 쪽이든 세상은 그들 뜻대로 움직이지 않습니다. 우리는 현재 (거의) 상아를 팔아서도 고래를 잡아서도 안된다는게 보편적 인식인 세상을 사니까요. 동물권 보호와 기후 위기를 지적하며 일어난 채식주의자들이 어쩌면 그러한 선구자일 수도 있습니다. 그러나 어찌됐건 나는 고기를 먹을 겁니다. 채식주의자들이 설파하는 연결감은 '나'에게는 닿지 않는 사치품이며, 다른 차원에서 최대한 비생산을 하는 마당에 육식을 즐기는 게 문제일 것도 없다고 생각하기 때문입니다. 이 말이 이기적으로 느껴진다면 주변에서 담배의 해악을 아무리 알리고 값을 올려도 그것이 인생의 유일한 낙이기에 끊을 생각이 없는 아저씨들을 생각하면 됩니다. 저도 그런 아저씨들을 좋아하진 않지만 비난은 못합니다.
