PGR21에 썼다가 지웠던 내용입니다. 조금 보충하면서 다시 올립니다. 다른 내용들도 좀 수정해서 올려보겠습니다. 가축화된 포유류는 어떤게 있나? 재레드 다이아몬드의 "총,균,쇠" 책에 나와있는 내용을 참조로 정리해 봤습니다. 안나 카레니나의 법칙 (가축화된 초식 포유류) “행복한 가정은 모두 엇비슷하고 불행한 가족은 불행한 이유가 제각기 다르다” 톨스토이의 소설 “안나 카레니나”의 첫 문장 입니다.” 결혼생활이 행복해지려면 수많은 요소들이 성공적이어야하고 그 중 한가지라도 어긋난다면 그 나머지 요소들이 모두 성립하더라도 그 결혼은 행복할 수 없다는 뜻에서 이런 말을 한거죠. 부부가 서로 성적으로 끌려야하고, 돈, 자녀교육, 종교, 인척 등의 중요한 문제들이 모두 합의될 수 있어야만 행복할 수 있다는 말이겠죠. 그럼 진짜 행복한 사람은 드물거에요. 돈이 많다고 다 행복한 건 아니고 돈이 많은 사람들 중에 아주 극히 일부는 불행하겠네요..아주 아주 극히 일부.. 가축화한 동물들은 그 특징들이 모두 엇비슷하고 가축화하지 못했던 동물들은 그 이유가 제각기 다르다는 것을 말하기 위해 재레드 다이아몬드는 “ 총,균,쇠”에서 위의 문장을 썼나봅니다. 몸무게 45kg이상 되는 가축화된 대형초식포유류 총 14종이고 이 중 전세계에 두루 퍼져있는 가축은 양, 염소, 소, 돼지, 말 총 5종뿐입니다. 그밖에 특정지역에 사는 9종 (단봉낙타, 쌍봉낙타, 라마&알파카, 당나귀, 순록, 물소, 야크, 발리소, 인도소) 이 있습니다. 치느님이 되시는 닭도 있지만 닭은 조류니까 우선 제외하구요. 인간의 모든 문화권에서는 동물을 애완동물로 키우고 가축으로 키우려는 전통이 있어서 우리 선조들은 이미 수많은 동물을 실험해보았을거라고 봅니다. 즉 전세계에는 148종의 대형초식포유류가 모두 가축화할 후보였고 그 가축화 실험은 이미 우리 선조들이 4500년전에 다 끝냈다고 보면 되는거죠. 지금은 가축화된 동물 빼고는 전부 부적합했던 것입니다. 심지어 오늘날 우리들이 자부하는 더 세련된 기술을 가지고도 더 가축화에 성공한 동물은 없습니다. 식성 – 육식성 포유류은 단 1종도 식용으로 가축화되지 못했습니다. 체중 450kg의 소를 키우려면 옥수수 4500kg이 필요하지만 체중 450kg의 육식동물을 키우려면 옥수수 45000kg을 먹고 자란 초식동물 4500kg이 필요합니다. 다만 개는 예외인데 개은 가축이기보단 애완동물이나 수렵용입니다. 그리고 개는 잡식성이라하네요. 원래 개는 쓰레기를 먹여서 키웠죠. 또 코알라처럼 즐겨먹는 식물이 너무 까다로우면 안됩니다 성장속도- 고릴라와 코끼리는 음식을 가리지 않고 많은 고기를 얻을 수 있는데 다자라는데 무려 15년이상 걸립니다. 코끼리는 길들여지긴 했지만 이들을 교배하고 다시 새끼를 키우기엔 코끼리가 너무 늦게 자라서 차라리 야생코끼리를 잡아 길들이는게 더 빠르다고 합니다. 감금상태에서의 번식문제 – 우리 불쌍한 호구형 치타는 길들이기도 쉽고 주인에 대한 충성심도 깊으며 지상에서 가장 빠른 동물인만큼 수렵용으로 개보다 월등히 뛰어납니다. 다만 갇혀있는 치타는 번식하지 않는다고 하네요. 차라리 야생에서 잡아서 길들여야하다고하니…치타는 복잡한 구애과정을 거쳐야지만 암컷이 배란을 하고 교미가 된다고 합니다. 감금상태에서는 도저히 할 수 없는 일이라고 합니다. 근래에 우리나라 동물원에서 어렵게 번식에 성공했다고 합니다. 팬더도 감금상태에서 번식이 힘든데 이들도 비슷하게 아주 복잡한 구애과정을 거쳐야만 암컷이 아주 짧은 기간만 배란이 되고 교미가 가능하다고 합니다. 보통 동물원내에서는 서로 관심이 없다네요. 그래서 팬더에게 다른 팬더들의 교미장면을 시청각자료로 보여주어 배란을 유도하고 교미에 성공했다네요. 팬더에게 일종의 팬더 AV를 상영한거죠. 골치아픈성격 – 회색곰의 고기는 값비싼 별미라고 합니다. 회색곰은 770kg까지 나가고 주로 초식성이고 비교적 빨리 자란다고 합니다. 하지만 다자란 회색곰은 난폭하고 사람을 죽인다고하네요. 아프리카들소는 빨리 성장하여 금방 1000kg가 되지만 아주 위험하고 예측할 수 없는 성격을 가졌다고 합니다.실제 아프리카에서 가장 사람을 많이 죽이는 야생동물 순위에 아프리카 들소가 5위안에 든다고 하네요. 하마 또한 4톤이나 나가는 초식동물이지만 해마다 사자보다도 더 많은 사람을 죽이는 난폭한 동물이라고 합니다. 야생당나귀랑 얼룩말도 사나운 성격으로 가축화되지 못했다고 합니다. 특히 얼룩말은 엄청 사납고 실제 동물원에서도 사육사를 마구 물더라구요. 겁먹는 버릇 – 신경이 예민한 종들은 감금상태가 되면 그 충격으로 죽어버리거나 탈출하려고 울타리를 마구 들이받다가 머리가 깨져 죽는다고 합니다. 사슴과 영양류가 이에 해당한다고 합니다. 특히 가젤은 걸핏하면 정신없이 내닫고 벽이건 뭐건 닥치는대로 들이 받는다고 합니다. 사회적구조 – 가축화된 대형 포유류의 조상들은 대부분 무리를 이루어 살고 무리의 구성원들이 위계질서가 발달했으며 중복되는 행동권을 갖는다고 합니다. 위계질서가 있으므로 우두머리에 잘 따르는 습성은 인간을 지도자로 따르게 한다는 특징이 있습니다. 그리고 서로 배타적인 영역권을 두지 않기 때문에 서로 싸우지도 않고 한꺼번에 많이 모아둘 수 있어 목축에도 적합하다고 합니다. 고양이과 동물들은 세력권을 가지고 생활하기 때문에 가축화가 힘들다고 하네요. 또 일부 영양류나 사슴류는 교미철이 되면 수컷끼리 세력권을 형성하고 무섭게 싸우기 때문에 가축화를 할 수 없다고 합니다. 코뿔소는 역시 사람을 죽이는 사나운 성격, 느린 성장 속도와 세력권에 대한 행동까지 도저히 목장에서 키울 수 없는 동물입니다. 말 대신 코뿔소가 아프리카에서 가축화되었다면 아마 흑인들이 말대신 코뿔소를 타고 전세계를 정복했을지도 모르죠. 좀 다른 이야기지만 코뿔소의 뿔이 정력에 좋다는 일부 동아시아 사람들(중국, 우리나라, 일본) 때문에 지금도 수많은 코뿔소들이 밀렵되고 있습니다. 너무나도 안타까운 일이에요. 구석기 수렵채취시대 남자는 176cm 여자는 165cm 정도 되던 평균키가 농경사회로 진입한 후 곡물 중심의 탄수화물만 먹어야 했던 일반 농민은 동서양 가릴 것 없이 남자는 150cm 대 여자는 140cm 대로 작아졌습니다. (인구는 폭발적으로 늘었습니다. 물론 왕이나 귀족들은 키가 컸어요. 사치품인 고기를 먹으니.) 20세기 들어서야 신대륙에 대규모 목축을 하게 되었고 신선한 고기를 저장하고 운송하는 수단도 발달하게 되었으며 무엇보다도 각 집마다 냉장고라는 특별한 도구가 생겨 일반인들도 고기를 쉽게 먹을 수 있게 되었습니다. 고기를 다시 먹게 된 현대에 와서야 비로서 인류의 평균키가 구석기 시대만큼으로 회복된 겁니다. 소 과거 추위에 강한 양과 염소를 많이 키웠습니다. 소는 기본적으로 추위에 약한데 유럽의 일부 추운 곳에서는 농경에 하지 않음에도 축사를 지어서 여름에 힘들게 만든 건초를 먹이면서까지 소를 키우기도 했습니다. 이토록 소에 매달린 건 맛이 있어서 입니다. 소고기는 일종의 사치품이죠. 인간은 기본적으로 잡식성이지만 고기를 많이 먹게 된 것이 뇌용량증가와 뇌 발달에 결정적인 역활을 했다고 여겨지죠. 신석기 이전 육류 섭취가 많던 인류가 신석기 농경사회로 진입하면서 소를 농경에 필요한 도구로 사용하면서 지배층들이 아주 여러가지 논리로 소를 못 먹게 합니다. 조선시대에도 마찬가지로 농경사회라 소를 못먹게 하죠. 세종대왕같은 소고기 덕후님이 계셨어도 일반 백성들은 소고기를 못먹게 했습니다. 목축을 하는 문화권이 아닌 이상 농경을 하는 문화권에서 소를 못잡게 했지만 이는 일반 사람들이고 지배층 등은 소를 많이 먹었습니다. 그러니 사치품이 된거죠. 고대 그리스 아테네에서는 아주 특별한 날에만 소고기를 먹을 수 있었다고 합니다. 축제 때 소를 대량으로 잡아 일반 시민들도 그날은 소고기를 먹었죠. 일종의 복지 사업이랄까? 고대 로마에서는 서민으로 부터 출발해서 귀족이 된 일종의 신참자들이 귀족들에게만 생기는 병인 통풍이 왔을 때 주변에 자랑을 하고 다녔다고 합니다. 통풍은 와인과 쇠고기를 많이 먹으면 생기는 질환으로 당시 소고기를 충분히 먹을 수 있다는 걸 나타낼 수 있는 부의 상징 같은 거였습니다. 돼지 돼지는 모든 문화권에서 많이 먹는데 유독 더운 이슬람권만 못먹게 합니다. 돼지의 기생충들이 인간과 공유가 잘되어 기생충의 숙주가 되고 기생충으로 유발되는 질병을 잘 퍼트립니다. 무엇보다도 더운 날씨에 돼지고기가 잘 상해서 돼지고기를 먹고 질병에 걸리는 사람도 많았다고 합니다. 또 돼지가 더위에 약해서 키우는데 물이 많이 필요하다고 하네요. 물이 부족한 이슬람권에서는 돼지를 키우기엔 많은 부담이 되었을 겁니다. 일부계층의 사치를 위해서 소중한 물을 대량으로 소모시키는 돼지사육은 더운 이슬람권에서는 불합리하게 보였을거에요. 그래서 이슬람이 흥하고 나서 아예 코란에서 금지를 시킨 것으로 여겨집니다. 돼지는 실제 초식동물이고 상당히 깨끗한 동물인데 인간에게 길들여진 단 한종만 잡식성이고 인간들이 과거엔 돼지를 쓰레기랑 인분을 먹여 더럽게 키워서 그런 겁니다. 현재 우리가 먹는 돼지는 빨리 자라고 사료를 먹여서 고기가 연하고 맛있습니다. 하지만 우리나라 제주도 등에서 인분으로 키우던 일명 똥돼지는 자라는데 시간이 많이 걸리고 실제 고기가 질겨서 맛이 없었다고 하네요. 지금의 맛있는 흑돼지는 우리가 먹는 현재 일반 돼지종과 교배종이고 사료를 먹이고 빨리 도축해서 먹는 거라 아주 맛있다고 합니다. 말 말은 실제 식량으로도 사용되지만 거의 운송수단이나 이동수단으로 사용되어 왔습니다. 특히 전쟁에서 무기로서 강력한 영향력을 발휘했습니다. 경마나 마차경주처럼 오락에도 기여하는데 이는 좋은 품종에 대한 경쟁을 촉발시킵니다. 우수한 말은 아랍종이 많은데 현재 경주마의 대부분의 조상인 서러브레드도 아랍 말에 기원합니다. 척박한 땅 아랍에 왜 말이..원래 말이 귀했던 아랍에서 전쟁무기로서 말의 중요성을 인식하고 말을 텐트 안에서 소중한 과일과 물을 먹이며 조심스럽게 키웠습니다. 중앙아시아나 이베리아반도의 우수말을 얻어와서 품종을 개량했죠. 아랍은 물과 식량 등 자원이 부족한 척박한 땅이라 잔인하게도 아주 소수에 종마 수컷만 남기고 모든 수컷은 죽여버렸습니다. 새끼를 낳을 수 있는 암말만 주로 키웠고 이 암말을 타고 전쟁을 했죠. 실제 십자군전쟁 때 유럽의 십자군은 덩치가 큰 수컷들을 기병에 사용했고 이슬람군대 중 일부는 이런 암말로만 구성되어 있어서 일부 발정난 수컷들이 자신의 십자군 진영을 버리고 상대방의 이슬람 군진영으로 달려가는 우스운 일도 있었다고 하네요. 이렇듯 아랍의 말은 극한 환경에서 살았지만 사람들에 의해 오랫동안 조심스럽게 품종 개량되었습니다. 부족마다 서로 우수한 말에 대한 자부심과 경쟁하는 문화도 있어서 더더욱 좋은 말들이 육성되었다고 합니다. 척박한 땅에서 인간에 의해 계속 품종이 개량된 아라비아말은 상대적으로 덩치도 작고 날렵하고 지구력도 쎈 우수한 경주마의 조상이 된겁니다. 많이들 아시겠지만 아메리카의 토종 말들은 1만년전 전부 멸종해버립니다. 영화에 말을 타는 인디언들이 나오는데 이들의 말은 16세기이후 아메리카에 진출한 유럽인들이 데리고 온 말들 중 일부가 탈출해서 북미평원에 살게 되고 이를 인디언들이 길들여서 사용한 겁니다. 아주 오랫동안 북미에는 말이 없었어요. 하긴 가축화된 말 이외에는 유라시아대륙이나 아프리카에서도 얼룩말이나 프셰발스키(몽고야생마)같은 몇종은 빼고는 전부 멸종되었습니다. 인간과 달리 초식동물들은 거친 식물을 먹이로 합니다. 이 거친 식물은 Cellulose 등의 식이섬유로 구성되어있는데 말이 식이섬유이지 사람들은 먹어봐야 소화도 못시키고 흡수도 안됩니다. Cellulose는 탄수화물이긴 하지만 워낙 단단히 결합되어 있어 우리 소화액으로는 단당류로 분해하기 힘들고 분해하는 효소가 포유류에는 아예 없어 에너지원으로 사용하기 힘듭니다. 사람들이 이런 거친 식이섬유를 먹으면 그대로 변으로 나옵니다. (뭐 찢어지게 가난하다는 말은 여기서 기원한 걸로 먹을게 없는 우리 선조들이 소화 안되는 거친 섬유질의 피근목피를 너무 많이 먹고 피똥을 싸다가 그런 겁니다.) 초식동물은 다른 동물과 먹이감을 놓고 경쟁을 피하기 위해 이런 거친 식물을 먹이로 선택했습니다. 돼지고기는 아랍 뿐만 아니라 한반도에서도 키우는 것을 그리 좋아하지 않았는데,
일단 품종자체가 그리 잘 크지 않았고, 사람이 먹는 것을 먹여야해서 먹을 것도 없는 동네에서는 돼지 사육을 싫어했다고 하더군요.
