왕족 중에서도 막 산 사람은 나오기 마련입니다. 조선 최고의 가문인데 성종 이후로 제대로 벼슬도 못 했으니 돈 모으고 노는 취미밖에 가질 수 없었죠. 유명한 건 역시 선조의 막장 세 아들, 임해군과 순화군 정원군(인조의 아버지)입니다. -_-; 조용히 살면 딱히 기록에 안 남으니 유명한 왕족은 개차반 짓을 했거나 역모에 이름이 나와서 죽었거나죠. 왕과 세자는 다른 왕족이 갖지 못한 권력을 누립니다. (극단적으로 보면 다른 왕족들은 이들이 없을 때를 대비한 스페어죠) 하지만 그 대신에 엄청난 격무에 시달렸죠. 특히 유학을 국시로 했던 조선이기에 그 정도는 더 심했습니다. 신하들이 왕에게 간언하는 걸 듣는 게 의식적으로든 제도적으로든 당연시됐습니다. 그걸 위해 세자 때는 물론 왕이 돼서도 유학에 대한 주입식 교육(경연)을 받았죠. 현대에도 이를 견딜 수 있는 사람은 그리 많지 않을 겁니다. 그럼에도 대부분이 그 길을 잘 따라간 걸 보면 (태어난 이상 그게 자신의 숙명이라 여긴 것도 있겠지만) 권력이란 것이 정말 놓을 수 없는 거구나 싶기도 합니다. 엇나간 세자로 양녕대군이 있습니다.. 아 물론 권력은 누리구요. 공부 안 하고 궁 바깥에서 놀고 오고 그랬죠. 태종이 달래기도 하고 질책하기도 했지만 끝내 고쳐지지 않습니다. 오히려 잘 하겠다 잘 하겠다 하다가 태종에게 덤비기까지 하죠. 사도세자와 제법 닮았습니다. -_-a 폐세자/죽음을 당한 나이도 비슷하군요. 하지만 사도세자와는 결정적인 차이가 있었으니, 좋은 대안이 있었다는 거였죠. 적장자계승이란 원칙 단 하나만 걸리는 정말 좋은 대안이요. 그리고 그 대안을 선택한 것이 태종의 가장 위대한 업적이 되었구요. 사도세자에겐 그게 없었죠. 그래서인지 양녕대군보다 더 문제가 많았는데도 차마 폐세자 못 시켰다가 끔찍한 일을 당합니다. 조선에는 27명의 왕이 있었고, 그만큼의 세자가 있었습니다. 왕과 세자로서 힘든 건 마찬가지였겠지만 각기 여러 차이점들이 있습니다. 왕 자신의 정통성이나 왕과 세자의 나이, 각자의 성격 등에서 말이죠. 영조처럼 극성으로 세자를 갈군 왕은 없습니다. 물론 한중록처럼 궁 내의 일을 자세히 다룬 기록이 없는 것도 있지만, 실록에 나올 정도로는 확실히 없습니다. 어느 왕이 세살박이를 대신들 앞에 불러서 글씨 쓰게 하겠습니까. 세자를 대한 건 정말 자기 꿈에 맞춰 자식을 갈구는 아버지의 전형적인 모습입니다. 그것도 너무 심하게 갈구는 아버지 말이죠. 세자가 공부 안 하는 걸 뻔히 아는 신하들이 세자에게 말 잘 해라, 너무 뭐라 하지 마라고 했다는 것만 봐도 가장 큰 문제는 영조였습니다. 그리고 한중록의 내용을 신뢰할수록 역겹지만 유일한 후계자니까 어쩔 수 없이 가르친다는 모습을 볼 수 있구요. 반면에 세자는 어떨까요? 어릴 때부터 공부 안 한다는 소리를 들은 세자는 양녕대군밖엔 없습니다. 그 연산군도 세자 시절엔 얌전했고, 이렇게 공부를 참 안 한 세자는 정말 찾을 수 없죠. 물론 이런 모습이 영조가 하도 공부공부 했고 그 때문에 기록이 많이 남았으며, 그 공부공부 때문에 세자가 반항한 것이라는 말도 가능합니다. 하지만 그렇게 공부공부 하는 엄한 아버지 밑에서도 공부 싫다고 어릴 때부터 말하는, 모범 답안을 (일부러든 아니든) 하지 않는 모습도 볼 수 있습니다. 영조가 아무리 갈궜다 해도 세자는 확실히 세자-왕의 재목이라기엔 무리가 있었다는 거죠. 어릴 때부터 공부 싫다고 아빠 앞에서도 말하고 놀기만 좋아했던 모습부터 이미 그르긴 했습니다. 거기다 영조가 괜찮다 괜찮다 해도 악착같이 효성 있는 세자인 척 하는 모습을 보여줘야 했습니다. 이거야 왕과 세자 아니더라도 유교 사회를 살아가기 위한 필수 덕목 아니겠습니까. 여자어에서도 그렇잖아요. 거절이 미덕인 사회에서 거절했다고 안 하면 어떻게 됩니까. 세자는 그랬습니다. 네 복잡한 문제입니다. 영조가 그리 갈구지 않았다면 놀기 좋아해도 큰 문제 없이 공부하는 세자가 되었을까요, 아니면 정말 공부를 안 해서 영조 아닌 다른 왕이라도 화가 날 정도였을까요? 그리고 영조처럼 갈구는 아빠가 아닌 자신을 사랑하는 부왕을 만났다면, 세자가 그렇게 미치지 않았을까요, 아니면 미치진 않더라도 애초에 잡학에 빠지고 사람을 때리고 죽이는 사람이 되었을까요? 후자를 완전히 무시하기엔 세자 시절과 10년의 세월을 정상인 것처럼 보냈던 연산군이 있습니다. 그 주변 상황도 참 안 좋았습니다. 역대 왕들 중에 영조만큼 안 좋은 배경을 가진 왕은 없었습니다. 60이 다 돼서도 자신을 부정하는 역적들이 있었으니까요. 그 자신에게 철저했던만큼, 세자도 철저히 키워야 했습니다. 탕평은 그의 엄청난 인내력으로 겨우 지탱됐습니다. 세자도 이런 정도의 능력은 있어야 했습니다. 웬만한 왕이라면, 영조의 이런 의지를 이을 수 없었을 겁니다. 특히 그게 조선의 왕으로 하면 안 되는 잡학을 좋아하는 왕이라면 말이죠. 그림은 왕이 할 게 아니고, 불교도 천인공노할 판국에 무당이라니요. 세자의 비교대상이 너무나도 천재였던 세손이어서 그렇지 그냥저냥 공부하는 세자였다면 저 정도까지 갔을지 의문입니다. 그 나이는 또 어땠습니까. 40대에 세자를 본 왕이 있었던가요? 아예 안 태어났다면 모를까 태어났다면 집착할 수밖에 없었습니다. 그 마음에 원자도 세자도 너무 빨리 책봉했습니다. 선조처럼 책봉을 질질 끌었다면 모를까 이것 자체도 큰 부담이 됐습니다. 물리기 힘들었으니까요. 어머니가 폐비되고 죽은 연산군도 경종도 폐세자는 되지 않았습니다. 세자의 확실한 비행, 신하들의 지속되는 요구, 그리고 왕의 결단이 필요했죠. 그런데 그 결단을 내리기엔 또 대체할 만한 아들이 없었습니다. 그저 미운 세자에게 더욱 기대할 수밖에 없었죠. +) 이 점은 신하들이 세자에게 잘해라 한 것에도 포함될 겁니다. 폐세자를 노리고 세자를 공격하기엔 대안이 없었습니다. 오히려 영조의 나이 떄문에 반대로 행동했죠. 지난 글들에서 왕과 세자 사이 정도가 아니었다면 죽지 않았을 거다는 댓글들을 달아주셨습니다. 네, 웬만하면 그랬을 겁니다. 물론 양반이든 평민이든 아버지가 저리 독하면 아들이 미칠 정도는 됐을 겁니다. 그래도 아들이 견디다 못해 자살하지 않으면 죽이진 않았을 겁니다. 어쩄든 제사를 지낼 첫째니까요. 그 부담도 세자일 때보단 훨씬 줄었을 겁니다. 돈만 많다면 미운 자식이래도 그냥 제사 때만 오는 없는 자식 정도로 여겨도 되긴 했을 겁니다. 반대로 그냥 아들바보였으면 못난 자식이래도 잘 대해줬을 거구요. 이건 영조가 자식이 못나도 사랑하는 팔불출일 경우에도 가능합니다. 신하들이 총대 메고 폐세자 요구를 할 순 없었을테니 어찌어찌 잘 넘기다가 아비가 죽으면 세자는 그대로 왕이 될 수 있었을 겁니다. 얼마나 훌륭한 왕이 됐을진 몰라도 말이죠. 마지막으로 영조의 나이도 생각해 봅시다. 영조는 결국 80이 넘는 나이까지 왕이었습니다. 효장세자가 살아있었대도 60대일 때였습니다. 손자인 정조가 즉위할 때가 세자가 죽은 지 14년 후인 25세 때입니다. 세자는 그 후로도 무려 14년을 더 벼텨서 40대가 되어서야 왕이 될 수 있었습니다. 비극의 이유라 한다면, 이게 가장 결정적입니다. 세자가 대리청정할 무렵인 50대에 죽었어도 세자가 그렇게까지 엇나가진 않았을 겁니다. 하지만 죽어도 너무 늦게 죽었죠. 그 성깔이 갈수록 심해진 채로 말입니다. 세자가 이 세월을 더 버틸 수 있었을까요? 아 물론 그 세자가 좋은 왕이 되었을지와는 별개의 얘기입니다. 정말 많은 if가 동원됩니다만, 결론은 간단합니다. 그 때의 상황은 정말 최악이고도 최악이었습니다. 영조는 수많은 열등감과 완벽주의에 사로잡혀 있었고, 너무 늦게 본 세자라 집착하게 됐습니다. 세자는 그걸 따라주기엔 너무도 모자랐구요. 영조가 닥달할수록 세자는 더 큰 고통을 겪게 됐고, 그걸 해쳐나갈 능력이 없었고 더욱 엇나가게 됩니다. 그런 세자를 영조는 사춘기 때 대리청정을 시켜서 더욱더 큰 고통을 안겨주었고 세자는 제대로 병을 얻게 됐구요. 차라리 늙은 영조가 죽기라도 했으면 모를까 영조는 참 정정하게 잘 살았습니다. 세자의 비행은 갈수록 심해집니다. 폐세자 결정을 내려도 충분했죠. 하지만 대안이 없었고, 세자가 더 미쳐갔어도 영조는 더욱 갈구는 것 외에 다른 방법을 쓸 수 없었습니다. 이러니 중간중간 칭찬도 하고 자애로운 모습도 보여주다가 다시 원래 태도로 돌아가게 되었죠. 그러다가 대안이 나타났습니다. 세손이었죠. 양녕대군은 사도세자와 비교하기엔 비행의 정도가 훨씬 약합니다. 태종이나 영조나 그 정도 비행으로도 폐세자를 감안할 정도의 왕은 되었습니다. 차이가 있다면, 대체할 게 있냐는 거였죠. 충녕대군이 있었기에 태종은 눈물을 뿌리면서 폐세자를 할 수 있었습니다. 영조는 그 대체자가 너무 늦게 나타났고, 폐세자로 끝내기엔 너무도 위험부담이 컸습니다. 결국 더 극단적인 결단을 할 수밖에 없었죠. 사적인 감정이야 당연히 들어갔겠죠. 하지만 그 과정은 참으로 주도면밀했습니다. 소름끼칠 정도로요. 아, 뭐 하나 더 큰 차이가 있긴 했네요. 태종은 양녕대군을 정말 사랑했다는 것이요. 영조는 그 반대였구요. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 혜경궁이 특이하게 생각했던 영조의 모습이 있었습니다. 가벼운 잘못 가지고는 호되게 질책하면서 큰 문제에는 그런 게 없었다는 것이죠. 사람을 여럿 죽인 걸 세자가 고백했을 때가 그랬고, 관서행이 들켰을 때가 그랬습니다. 하지만 이게 이해가 안 되냐 하면 그건 또 아닙니다. 작은 문제야 까면 그만이지만, 큰 문제는 공론화시킬수록 무제가 너무 커져버립니다. 특히 관서행이 그랬죠. 작은 문제들이야 세자를 꾸짖고 고치게 하는 방향으로 가면 됐습니다. 하지만 큰 문제였다면 정반대였죠. 고쳐지지 않고 고치는 것만으로 해결할 수 없는 거 아니겠습니까. 아예 문제의 근본을 바꿔야죠. 영조가 세손을 조선의 희망으로 생각했을 때, 세자도 자신이 살 길이 얼마 남지 않음을 느꼈습니다. 영조의 생각도 마찬가지였습니다. 문제는 어떻게 할 것인가였죠. 그냥 왕위를 잇게 한다면? 이미 연산군을 넘을 폭군이 연상됐습니다. 그렇다고 폐세자 시켜도 문제는 해결되지 않습니다. 그 뒤를 이을 것은 세자의 동생이 아닌 아들 세손이었습니다. 세손의 효심도 있겠지만, 유교 사회에서 아들이 아버지를 올리는 건 당연한 거였습니다. 그렇다면 세손이 아무리 천재여도 폐세자된 아버지의 폭거를 막을 수 있을까요? 그렇게 까고 깠지만, 신하들부터 유생들까지 세자를 비판했지만, 세자는 여전히 조선 제2의 권력이었습니다. 대리청정까지 하고 있는 실권을 가지고 있었죠. 신하들이 영조 다믕 대를 생각하지 않을 수 없었습니다. 나이로 보면 당장 내일 죽어도 상관없었으니까요. 5월에 갔던 관서행이 9월에나 알려지고, 나경언의 고변에 담긴 내용을 신하들이 몰랐을 리가 없었습니다. 그게 영조 자신에게는 가지 않았죠. 당연히 사람 죽이고 놀러다니고 하는 어느 정도의 비행은 자신도 알고 있었습니다. 하지만 그 이상은 신하들이 영조에게 말하지 않았습니다. 세자가 대리를 하고 있다고 해도 영조가 신하들을 안 만나고 있던 게 아니었는데 말입니다. +) 세자의 관서행 전 정승 세 명이 병으로 죽습니다. 관서행의 책임이라는 설도 있지만 관서행 전이었고, 어쨌든 세자와 관련이 있는 게 아닌가 하는 추측이 있죠. 김상로 등 '정조의 원수'로 지목된 신하들부터 영조의 아이를 가져서 폐세자를 노렸다는 (영화에서 물그릇 들고 있다가 종아리 맞기도 하는) 문씨녀까지, 세자를 깐 사람들이 당연히 있었을 겁니다. 하지만 딱히 이들이 뭘 왜곡하진 않았을 겁니다. 세자가 공부 안 한다, 세자는 이게 부족하다는 당연한 말을 하면 되는 거였으니까요. 이러다가 폐세자 얘기가 나오기도 했을 겁니다. 이런 죄로 김상국은 죽은 후 역적이 됐고, 문씨녀는 사약을 받습니다. 하지만 지금까지의 모습을 보면 그들이 정말 세자의 죽음에 결정적이었다는 생각은 안 듭니다. 무엇보다 이들조차도 세상이 다 아는 관서행 등을 영조에게 바로 얘기하지 않았으니까요. +) 정조 얘기할 때 하겠지만, 세자를 까긴 깐 것 같지만 영조가 이들에게 죄를 덮어씌웠고, 정조가 이들에게 복수했다고 보는 게 맞을 겁니다. 영조에겐 죄책감을 덜어줬고, 정조에겐 아버지가 그냥 미쳐서 죽은 게 아니라 모함을 받았다는 명분과 할아버지에게 향할 수 없었던 복수가 됐습니다. 신하들에게는 아무리 그래도 폐세자를 쉽게 할 수 없다는 명분이 있었습니다. 세손으로 넘기려는 영조의 마음을 아예 몰랐을 수 없겠고 그들이라고 생각 못 했겠습니다만, 그래도 아비를 죽이고 자식을 앉히는 건 상상할 수 없었습니다. 현실적인 이유로는 영조가 언제 죽을 지 몰랐다는 것이 있구요. 하지만 이게 영조에겐 너무도 큰 문제였습니다. 대리를 한다 하나 세자의 비행이 자기에게 온전히 전달되지 않는다는 것, 그게 자신의 생각보다 훨씬 컸다는 것이요. 당장 자기가 죽으면 세자가 무슨 짓을 저지를지 몰랐습니다. 그런 자신이 없어진다면? 세자가 무슨 짓을 저지를 지 알 수 있겠습니까. 세자는 이미 너무도 큰 권력이었고, 존재 자체가 문제였습니다. 세손 나이 어느덧 11세였습니다. 사춘기니 했지만 그 때는 청소년이라는 개념이 없을 때였습니다. 조선의 성인식인 관례는 15세 때부터 할 수 있었고, 세자도 그리 했죠. 아버지 숙종은 14세 때 왕위에 올랐고 대리청정도 없이 왕권을 휘둘렀습니다. 앞으로 4년만 버티면 세손은 어른이 됩니다. 이미 오래 살았지만 앞으로 더 살 자신이 있었고, 그 몇년을 자기가 뒤를 봐주면 됐습니다. 더 클때까지 봐주면 더욱 좋았구요. 자기가 더 오래 살거라 확신은 못 했겠지만, 그런 모험이 세자를 그대로 두는 것보다는 훨씬 나았습니다. 관서행과 나경언의 고변은 확실하게 폐세자시킬 명분은 못 되었습니다. 하지만 영조의 마음 속에서 폐세자는 이미 결정되었고, 세자를 없애야 할 확신을 가져주었죠. 이걸로 부족했지만, 강행해야 했습니다. 명분을 억지로 만들어서라도 말이죠. ------------------------------------------------------ "어젯밤 소문은 더욱 무서우니, 일이 이왕 이리된 바에는 내가 죽어 모르거나, 살면 종사를 붙들어야 옳고, 세손을 구하는 일이 옳으니, 내 살아 빈궁(혜경궁)을 다시 볼 줄 모르겠노라." 13일, 선희궁 영빈 이씨는 며느리에게 이런 편지를 보냅니다. 그 날 아침, 그녀는 영조를 찾아가죠. "동궁(세자)의 병이 점점 깊어 바랄 것이 없으니, 소인이 차마 이 말씀을 드리는 것이 절이에 못 할 일이나, 옥체를 보호하고 세손을 건져 종사를 평안히 하는 일이 옳사오니, 대처분을 하소서." "설사 그리하신다 해도 부자의 정이 있고 병으로 그리된 것이니 병을 어찌 꾸짖으리이까. 처분은 하시나 은혜를 끼치시고 세손 모자를 평안하게 하소서." 윤 5월 11일부터 12일까지, 세자는 영조를 죽이겠다는 말까지 합니다. 그러면서 하수구를 통해 경희궁으로 가려다 말았다 하죠. 선희궁은 다음 날 이를 말한 겁니다. 이에 영조는 바로 세자를 만나러 갔다 합니다. 이렇게 보면 영조의 행동이 충동적인 것 같지만, 그렇게만은 볼 수 없습니다. 세자 자신도 느꼈던 걸 선희궁과 혜경궁이라고 느끼지 못했을 리가 없죠. 영조가 직접 설득했든 암묵적으로든 이에 대한 얘기가 오갔을 겁니다. 이 날 영조의 말을 충실히 들었던 신하도 있으니까요. 뒤주를 들고 온, 세자의 장인 홍봉한이요. 세자의 어머니는 이렇게 아들의 역모를 알리고, 아들을 죽이라 청합니다. . 세자의 아버지는 결단을 내리죠. ------------------------------------------------- 13일, 혜경궁은 분노한 남편의 손에 죽을지도 모른다 생각했다 합니다. 세손에게 앞일을 말하고 타이른 후 왔다 하죠. 세자는 의외로 큰 말이 없었답니다. 이렇게 말했다 하죠. "아마도 자네는 다행히 살겠네. 그 뜻들이 무서워." "내가 학질을 앓는다 하려 하니, 세손의 휘항(방한모자)을 가져오라." 하지만 혜경궁은 작은 세손 것 대신에 세자 것을 가져왔고, 이렇게 말했다 하죠. "자네 아무래도 무섭고 흉한 사람일세. 자네 세손 데리고 오래 살려고, 내가 오늘 나가 죽게 되었기에 꺼림칙하여, 세손 휘항을 아니 쓰게 하려 하니, 그 마음을 알겠네." 세자는 세손이 영조의 이쁨을 받으니 그걸로 어떻게 해 보려 한 것 같습니다. 혜경궁이 정말 저런 마음이었을지는 모르겠네요. 진짜 그런 마음이었다면 일부러 기록하진 않았을텐데요. 뭐 이것 때문인지 영화에선 세자에 대해서 사랑보단 냉정한 모습을 보여주긴 합니다. 영조는 창덕궁에 도착해 선원전(선왕들의 어진이 있는 곳)에 다시 절을 올립니다. 그리고는 세자를 부르죠. 세자는 이번에도 병을 핑계댔지만, 영조는 재촉해서 오게 합니다. 영조와 세자가 만났고, 세자가 영조에게 절을 합니다. 이 때도 세자는 의대증으로 안에 무명옷을 입어서 '날 죽이고 싶었던 거냐?'는 욕을 먹었죠. 그 후, 영조는 이렇게 말합니다. "여러 신하들 역시 신(神)의 말을 들었는가? 정성왕후께서 나에게 이르기를, ‘변란이 호흡 사이에 달려 있다.’고 하였다." 그러면서 바깥을 4, 5겹으로 막게 하고, 호위병들에게도 바깥으로 칼을 뽑아들게 합니다. 이렇게 사방을 차단하고 다른 사람들의 출입을 막았죠. 그리고 세자에게 관과 신발을 벗고 엎드리게 한 후 자결을 명합니다. "내가 죽으면 조선의 사백년 종사가 다 망하겠지만, 네가 죽으면 종사는 보존할 수 있을 것이니, 네가 죽는 것이 옳으리라. 네 자결하면 조선국 세자의 이름을 잃지 않을 것이니, 속히 자결하라!" 사방을 막았지만 신하들은 급히 들어옵니다. 대신들부터 승지들, 세자 소속 신하들까지 말이죠. 심지어 세손까지 들어와 아비를 살려달라 말했고, 영조는 세손을 내보내면서 다시 못 들어오게 합니다. 그렇게 실랑이가 계속됩니다. "제가 죄가 많습니다만, 죽을 죄가 있는지는 모르겠습니다." "아버지, 살려주옵소서. 잘못하였으니, 이제는 하라 하시는대로 하고, 글도 읽고 말씀도 들을 것이니 이리 마소서." 그렇게 대들기도 하고 빌기도 하기를 여러 번, 영조의 말은 변함이 없었습니다. 이에 세자도 포기하고 자결을 시도하죠. 하지만 그것도 쉽진 않았습니다. 대신들은 비교적 소극적으로 나왔지만 세자 소속이었던 신하들은 목숨을 걸고 말립니다. 목을 매려 하면 끈을 풀었고, 머리를 박으려 하면 머리를 잡았습니다. 이들로서는 세자가 자결하는 걸 눈 앞에서 볼 수 없었죠. 영조는 이미 세자를 폐했는데 니들이 왜 있냐면서 나가라고 강요했지만 세자도 마지막 생명줄인 그들을 붙잡고 늘어집니다. 그 때문에 실랑이는 더욱 길어졌고, 영조는 결국 문제의 그 물건을 들고 오게 합니다.  뒤주였죠. 이 물건이 온 후로도 저녁까지 실랑이가 계속되었고 결국 세자는 뒤주 안에 들어가게 됩니다. 그리고, 살아서 다시 나올 수 없었죠. 훗날, 차마 그 날을 말할 수 없어서 '모월 모일'이라고 표현하게 된, 그 때 그 날의 시작입니다. * 난커피가더좋아님에 의해서 자유 게시판으로부터 게시물 복사되었습니다 (2015-10-23 07:49) * 관리사유 : 추천게시판으로 복사합니다.
