1592년 4월 13일, 절영도(현 부산광역시 영도구) 부산진첨사 정발은 절영도에서 사냥을 하고 있었습니다. 길고 끔찍한 전쟁의 시작을 목격하게 되죠. 처음에는 세견선인 줄 알았지만, 그렇다기엔 규모가 너무 컸죠. 정발은 뭔가가 일어났음을 느끼고 성으로 돌아가서 농성을 준비합니다. 주변에 이 사실을 알리고, 군사와 백성들을 성으로 불렀으며, 휘하의 배 세 척을 자침하고 일본인들(다 도망가서 넷밖에 없었지만)을 붙잡아 놓습니다. 적들은 절영도에 정박한 채 하루를 보내고, 다음 날 새벽 공격을 시작하죠. 이것이 부산진 전투의 시작이고, 임진왜란의 시작입니다.  부산진순절도 부산진성의 병력은 5~600명에서 많아도 1천명 이내로 추정됩니다. 반면 적은 고시니 유키나가가 이끄는 일본 1군, 1만 8천 7백명이었죠. 다 상륙한 건 아니겠지만, 일부만 보내도 상대하기 힘든 대군이었습니다. 일본군은 우선 성을 정찰하였는데, 각종 총통과 활로 무장하고 성을 지키는 모습을 보고 물러났다고 합니다. 이 때 동래성에서 그랬던 것처럼 길을 빌려달라면서 항복을 종용하기도 했다고 합니다. 정발은 화살로 대답했죠. 상륙지에서 밤을 보낸 일본군은 묘시(새벽 5~7)부터 공성을 시작합니다. 조총을 끊임없이 쏘며 전진했고, 조선군은 총통과 활로 맞섰죠. 1차 공격은 적이 성에 오르기 전에 막아냅니다. 땅에 깔아둔 마름쇠 덕분이었죠. 하지만 다음 공격은 더 거셌습니다. 적은 사방을 포위했고, 근처의 높은 곳에 올라 성 내로 조총을 쏴댔습니다. 피해는 늘어만 갔고, 조선군의 수는 너무도 적었습니다. 부하들은 성을 버리자 했지만 정발은 오히려 결사항전을 외칩니다. 성을 버리는 자는 베어버리겠다면서 말이죠. 마침내 북문이 뚫렸고, 적이 성 안으로 밀려듭니다. 정발도 끝까지 싸우다 적의 총에 맞아 쓰러졌구요. 향년 40세였습니다. 그의 첩인 애향은 이를 보고 자살했구요. 애향의 종인 용월도 그녀를 따랐다 합니다. 정발의 시신은 일본군이 온전히 보존하여 고향으로 보내줬다고 하구요. 부산진성은 이렇게 함락됩니다. 정발과 함께 싸웠던 부사맹 이정헌을 비롯해 병사들은 대부분 최후까지 싸웠고, 전사합니다. 살아남은 이들은 학살의 피해자가 됩니다. 일본군은 감히 맞서 싸운 성을 없애버리려 했죠. 살려달라고 빌어도 베고 밟아죽였고, 개와 고양이도 남기지 않으려 했습니다. 부산진 전투의 공으로 내세운 게 수급(목) 8천에서 3만까지 가는데, 수야 엄청난 과장이겠지만, 엄청난 수가 학살당했다는 걸 느낄 수 있습니다. 그나마 오후가 되니까 학살을 금지했다고 합니다. +) 부사맹은 관직이 정해지지 않은 종8품 무관입니다. 이정헌은 남쪽의 군비를 강화하는 과정에서 정발의 요청으로 성에 들어와 있었는데, 도망가려면 도망갈 수도 있었겠지만 함께 싸우고 죽었다 합니다. 원래 부산진성에 있을 사람이 아니어서 그가 부산진에서 전사한 게 알려진 건 훨씬 나중의 일이었다고 합니다.  약 4시간, 정발과 부산진성 군민들이 버틴 시간입니다. ------------------------------------------------------------- 임진왜란의 시작으로 많은 사람이 알고 있지만 그만큼 주목은 받지 않는 전투입니다. 열심히 싸우기는 했지만 수가 너무 적었고, 일본군에 별 피해를 주지도 못했으니까요. 세견선으로 오인했다는 것, 병력 수가 너무 적었다는 것 등에서 조선이 전쟁 준비를 하지 않았다는 느낌이 들 수밖에 없구요. 여기다 정발에게 불리하게 나온 기록도 있구요. 술 먹고 상황파악도 제대로 못 했고, 도망쳤다는 것부터 다음 날 적이 공격하고 나서야 알았다는 안 좋은 얘기들이 있었습니다. 조선 초기의 혼란을 보여주는 부분들이죠. 하지만 위에서 쓴 대응만 봐도 그게 아니라는 걸 알 수 있습니다. 공격 직전에야 알았다면 배를 자침하고 화포를 준비하고, 성 밖에 마름쇠를 깔아놓는 등의 대응은 못 했겠죠. 이런 점에서 최근에는 절영도로 사냥을 나간 것부터가 놀러 나간 게 아니라는 평가를 받고 있습니다. 군사훈련의 일환으로 보는 거죠. 이런 인식이 바뀌고, 열심히 싸우다 전사한 걸로 인정받는 데는 시간이 많이 필요했습니다. 조정은 한동안 정발은 물론 송상현의 행방을 모르고 있었습니다. 살아남은 사람이 거의 없었으니까 더 그랬겠죠. 1592년 말까지도 그가 정말 죽었나 의심받고 있었고, 그 후에도 전사했겠지~ 이런 느낌입니다. 생존자의 증언은 있었습니다. 가은산 등 3명의 생존자로 시체 속에 숨어 있다가 포로가 됐는데, 학살이 금지돼서 겨우 살았다가 17일에 풀려났다고 하죠. 이들의 증언에는 세견선으로 오인했다는 내용도 없고, 정발이 목숨을 바쳐 싸웠다는 것을 확실히 말해주죠. 이 증언이 정확히 언제 나왔고, 조정에 전달됐는지는 알 수 없지만요. 휴전이 되면서 그 정발을 상대한 적의 증언도 나옵니다. 황신(黃愼)은 강화교섭을 맡으면서 일본, 특히 고니시 유키나가 측과 계속 접촉합니다. 이 과정에서 평조신(平調信)이라는 자에게 정발과 부산진 전투에 대한 얘기를 들었다고 하죠. 적장조차 감동할 정도로 처절히 싸우고 나라에 충성을 다한 정발, 이런 이미지가 다름 아닌 그를 상대한 적을 통해서 나온 것이죠. 부산에서 우리는 크게 좌절했다, 패했다는 얘기가 여기서 나온 걸로 보입니다. +) 다만 송상현처럼 실록에 그 모습이 보이진 않습니다. --------- 이 평조신은 대마도주 소 요시토시의 가신인 야나가와 시게노부입니다. 고니시-요시토시와 함께 외교 부분에서 이름이 계속 올라오죠. 인터넷에서 정발의 일화를 소개할 때 마쓰라 시게노부가 나오는데 아무리 봐도 오류 같네요. 황신은 전후에 통신사로 간 적 없었고, 휴전기간 때 야나가와 시게노부와 계속 만나고 통신사로 일본에 갔었습니다. 뭣보다 상대가 평조신이라고 하는데, 마츠라 시게노부는 송포진신입니다. 큐슈의 다이묘 중 하나죠. (신장의 야망 하신 분들, 큐슈의 송포륭신의 아들입니다) 다이묘인 만큼 고니시 유키나가가 이끄는 1군에 병력을 이끌고 참전했구요. 평조신->이름이 시게노부네?->1군 중에 시게노부 있네? 얜가 보다. 이런 과정을 통해서 나온 오해인 것 같네요. 야나가와보다 마쓰라/마쓰우라 시게노부라는 얘기가 훨씬 많네요. --------- 1603년, 정발의 아내 임씨는 조정에 억울함을 호소합니다. 싸우다 죽었는데도 제대로 인정을 받지 못 했고, 오히려 도망쳤다는 말이 많으니 정발이 억울해서 눈을 감지 못하겠다면서요. 이래서 재조사에 들어갔고, 당시 경상좌수사 이영은 (위에서 적은) 가은산의 증언을 올립니다. 그리고 1615년, 정발을 충신 대열에 수록해야 된다는 건의가 올라왔고, 받아들여집니다. 이 즈음에는 확실히 충신으로 인정받은 것이죠. 이후 인조 대인 1624년에 송상현을 모신 송공사에 함께 모셔지게 되고 이름도 바뀌게 되니, 부산의 충렬사(忠烈祠)입니다. 이후 숙종 대에 정발에 대한 얘기가 다시 올라오게 됩니다. 시작은 좀 웃긴데, 송상현은 이조판서(정2품)로 추증되었는데 정발은 받지 못했다고 동래의 선비들이 상소를 올린 거였죠. 헌데 (정확한 시점은 몰라도) 정발에게도 병조판서가 추증되었고 (...) "변방의 백성들이 어리석고 소홀히 하여 잃어버린 것이다"고 판단합니다. +) 다만 이후에 계속 논의가 되고 있는 걸 보면 전달 과정에서 뭔가 문제가 있지 않았나 하는 생각도 드네요. 이후 의정부좌찬성(종1품)으로 더 추증해 줍니다. 정발에 대한 논의는 계속되었는데, 이를 이끈 사람이 다름 아닌 송시열이었습니다. 그는 나라를 위해 죽은 정발, 그를 따라 죽은 첩 애향, 그녀를 따라 죽은 종 용월, 이들의 죽음에 큰 감동을 느낀 모양입니다. 거기다 적에게까지 칭송을 받은 게 더해줬죠. 성리학의 상징, 송시열이 본 모습이었죠. 직접 묘갈명(묘비에 죽은 이의 행적을 쓴 글)을 썼고, 그 마지막은 이랬습니다. "내가 명(銘)을 짓지 않으면 누가 파묻힌 일을 드러내어 알리겠는가" 이후 숙종 12년, 정발은 시호를 받게 되니 충장忠壯이었습니다. 그의 활약과 충성이 이렇게 인정받게 된 것이죠. ----------------------------------------------------------------- https://pgr21.com/?b=10&n=332378 이 부산진 전투를 다룬 만화가 있죠. 저렇게 무쌍난무까진 하진 않았더라도, 장수인데도 총에 맞아 전사한 걸 보면 다가가지 못할 정도의 활약을 보인 것 같습니다. 난전 중에 맞은 것일 수도 있겠지만요. 이 사람이 전사하지 않고 계속 활약했으면 어땠을까? 하는 부분에서 정발은 꼭 들어가는 인물입니다. 임진왜란 전, 일본의 동태가 심상치 않자 시도했던 불차채용-순서나 차례를 따지지 않고 특별히 채용-에 그 역시 이름이 올라옵니다. 이순신의 파격적인 승진의 시작이었던 그 불차채용에 말이죠. 능력과 충성을 인정받고 있었다는 겁니다. 그 때 그가 최전방에 배치된 것도 이 때문이었을 겁니다. 당시 그의 품계는 정3품 절충장군으로, 수사와 동급이었습니다. 종3품이 임명되는 첨절제사(첨사)에 그가 임명된 거죠. 일본을 제일 먼저 상대하는 만큼 고르고 골라서 보낸 것이죠. 적을 막진 못 했지만, 기대에 부응하는 충성심을 보여줬구요. 4시간 만에 패하긴 했지만 이 역시 짧은 시간이 아닙니다. 1천도 안 되는 병력으로 그 시간을 버틴 것도 대단한 거지만, 그가 싸웠다는 것 자체가 중요한 부분입니다. 일본군이 한양을 점령한 게 상륙 20일만이었습니다. 만약 처음부터 정발이 항복했다면, 혹은 도망쳤다면 이게 하루, 빠르면 이틀까지도 당겨질 수 있었을 겁니다. 임진왜란의 시작으로 가볍게 지나가는 게 정발과 부산진 전투지만, 결코 가볍지 않은 것이죠. 일본군은 부산진성을 파괴하고 왜성을 다시 쌓습니다. 이 왜성을 토대로 부산진성을 개축했구요. 원래의 부산진성은 흔적만 겨우 찾을 수 있을 정도입니다. 그래도 부산진성이 있었던 동구 좌천동에는 정공단이 있어, 충렬사와 함께 흑의(黑衣)장군 정발과 부산진에서 순절한 이들을 기리고 있죠. https://terms.naver.com/entry.nhn?docId=546854&cid=46622&categoryId=46622 ------------------------------------------------------------- 부산진을 확보한 적은 교두보를 넓히기 위해 서쪽으로 향합니다. 서평포와 다대포였죠. 이 중 서평포에서 무슨 일이 있었는지는 알려지지 않습니다. 적과 싸웠는지, 그냥 무너졌는지 말이죠. 다대포에서 있었던 일은 그나마 알려졌지만, 역시 많은 부분이 베일에 쌓여 있습니다. 부산포에 상륙한 적이 병력을 나눠서 육지로 공격해 온 건지, 바다에서 후속병력이 상륙해서 공격했는지 등이 말이죠. 다대포 역시 부산의 중요한 입구였고, 병력은 부산진보다 더 배치돼 있었습니다. (보통 800명 정도로 추측합니다) 최전방이고 급할 때긴 했지만, 자세하게 나오는 게 없으니 안타까울 뿐이죠. 다대포순절도 같은 것도 없습니다. 알려진 것은 두가지입니다. 다대포진성이 공격받고 함락당했다는 것, 그리고 다대포 첨사 윤흥신이 적과 맞서 싸우다 전사했다는 것이죠. 윤흥신은 중종 때 권신인 윤임의 아들입니다. 여인천하 때 문정왕후와 윤원형의 정적이죠. 윤임은 인종의 외숙부고 윤원형은 명종의 외숙부였고 차기 왕 자리를 두고 다툽니다. 윤임의 세력을 대윤이라 부르고 윤원형(+문정왕후)의 세력을 소윤이라 불렀죠. 애초에 인종이 세자로 뻔히 있는 상황인데 세력다툼을 했다는 것 자체가 -_-; 윤원형과 문정왕후가 문제인 것인데... 인종이 즉위하고 1년도 안 돼서 죽고 명종이 즉위했으니... 대윤은 숙청당하게 되죠. 윤흥신은 이 때 나이가 어려 죽지는 않고 노비가 됩니다. 다행히 선조 때 윤임이 복권되었고 다시 관직생활을 할 수 있었죠. 하지만 제대로 배울 기회가 없었나 봅니다. 1580년, 진천 현감으로 있다가 파직되는데, 그 이유가 문자를 제대로 몰라서였다고 합니다. 2년 후에도 파직되구요. 그의 능력이나 노력은 알 수 없지만, 이런 걸 보면 참 힘들게 살았을 것 같습니다. 그리고 그가 잘 알려지지 않은 이유도 여기에 있을 수 있겠구요, 그의 공을 말해 줄 가족이나 친한 이들이 없었을 것 같거든요. 이런 그가 임진왜란 때 다대포에 있었죠. 그리고 나라를 위해 싸우다 전사합니다. 혼란이 진정된 후 그가 전사한 사실이 어느 정도 알려지긴 했습니다. 하지만 그의 충성이 인정받은 건 한참 뒤의 일이었죠. 1757년, 조엄은 동래부사로 충렬사를 참배하면서 의문을 가지게 됩니다. 분명히 징비록 등에는 윤흥신이 전사한 것으로 나오는데, 충렬사에는 없었다는 것이죠. 전사한 이들은 노비까지도 함께 모셔져 있는데 말입니다. 하지만 시간이 너무 지났고, 그에 관련된 자료를 아무리 찾아도 찾을 수 없었다고 하죠. 4년 후 경상도 관찰사가 되어 윤흥신을 표창할 것을 건의하기도 했구요. 그러다가 겨우 기록을 찾아내어 [윤공유사]를 남기게 됩니다. 이렇게 윤흥신에 대한 재조사가 시작되었고, 1765년에는 부산첨사로 온 이해문이 윤공단을 만들게 되었죠. 비슷한 시기 동래부사로 온 강필리 역시 충렬사를 참배하면서 같은 감정을 느낍니다. 그 역시 최대한 자료를 찾았고, 범어사에서 그를 모시고 있는 걸 알게 되었죠. 선비들은 모르는데 산의 스님은 오히려 알고 있다면서 슬퍼하였고, [윤공사절기]를 써서 알렸구요. 이런 노력 끝에 조엄은 영조에게 윤흥신을 충렬사에 함께 배향해 줄 것을 건의합니다. 대신들이 모두 따르고 임금도 따랐다고 하니 그 사이에 정말 많은 노력을 한 것 같습니다. 그게 1772년, 임진년부터 무려 180년 후였죠. 그들의 노력이 있었지만, 전투의 양상이 크게 알려지진 않았습니다. 아쉬운 부분이죠. 그래도 그가 목숨을 바쳤다는 것은 알 수 있었죠. 당시 성 안에는 동생 윤흥제가 함께 있었고, 형과 함께 싸웁니다. 첫 날(14일로 추정됩니다) 적이 포위해서 공격했고, 놀랍게도 이를 막아냅니다. 하지만 다음 날에는 더 많은 적이 올 것이었죠. 부하가 성을 버리길 요청했지만, "죽음이 있을 뿐이다."면서 거부합니다. 결국 적이 다시 오고, 병사들은 도망갔지만 그들 형제는 끝까지 싸웠다고 합니다. 결국 적의 칼에 당했고, 윤흥제는 형을 안고 죽었는데 팔이 풀리지 않아 함께 합장했다고 하구요. 다대포성은 현재 흔적만 남아 있고, 이것도 파괴된 후에 다시 쌓은 성의 흔적으로 추정됩니다. 그래도 조엄의 노력으로 그의 이름이 다시 알려졌고, 윤공단이 그 자리에 남아 있어서 이 전투가 있었던 게 잊히지 않게 되었죠. https://terms.naver.com/entry.nhn?docId=539985&cid=46622&categoryId=46622 ---------------------------------------------------------- 부산진 전투와 다대포 전투는 임진왜란을 시작한 [육전]입니다. 여기서 의문이 생기는 부분이 있죠. 이 둘은 경상좌수영 소속이라는 거죠. 이 두 전투와 동래성 전투까지 가는 과정에서 경상좌수군이 바다로 움직이는 모습은 보이지 않습니다. 우선 생각해 볼 것은, 적이 너무 많았기에 요격을 포기했다는 것입니다. 정발부터가 배를 가라앉혔고, 박홍도 부산진이 무너진 후 동래성으로 가려 했었죠. 적선이 너무 많고, 상륙한 이상 자신의 성을 지키고 육군과 함께 싸우려 했다... 아마 기본적으로 생각해 볼 수 있는 부분입니다. 하지만 그게 모두 계획된 것일 수도 있습니다. 전쟁 전, 이순신에 관련된 일화가 하나 있습니다. 일본은 수군이 강하고 조선은 육군이 강하니 수군을 폐하자, 신립이 주장한 수군전폐론이었죠. 이순신은 이걸 강력히 반박해서 안 됐구요. 그런데 이게 완전히 없어진 건 아니고 경상좌수영에서 이루어진 거라면? 명종 대와 임진왜란 당시를 비교해 보면 경상좌수영은 많은 부분에서 변했습니다. 울산에 있던 본영이 부산의 해운포(현재 부산시 수영구 수영동)로 옮겨졌고, 수사 바로 밑인 첨절제사(첨사)가 부산포와 다대포에 배치됐습니다. 다대포는 원래 만호(종4품)가 맡았는데, 이 때는 첨사(종3품)가 맡고 있죠. 부산진은 위에서 썼듯 특별히 정3품에게 첨사를 맡깁니다. 12개 관포가 소속돼 있었는데 이 중 8개가 부산-울산에 있었구요. 즉, 전쟁에 대비해 경상좌수군의 주력을 부산에 집중한 거죠. +) 보통 경상좌수영을 설명할 때 소속 진포를 7개로 설명하는데, 이게 언제 변경된 건지는 모르겠네요. +) 경상우수영은 8관 16~20포로 그 두 배 이상이었고, 전라좌수영은 5관 5포로 (본영 포함) 11개였으니 경상좌수군과 규모가 비슷하다 할 수 있겠네요. 전라우수영은 16관 12포였습니다. 여기에 이런 자료도 있습니다. http://lyuen.egloos.com/v/4571363 경상좌수군의 병력을 파악할 때 육군처럼 기병과 보병으로 파악하고 있다는 것이죠. 그 시기를 임진왜란 직전으로 추정하고, 병력 역시 더 정확하겠죠. 두 첨사가 곧바로 농성으로 대항했다는 점, 수사 박홍이 육지로 움직였다는 것, 적의 침입에 맞춰 경상좌수군이 육지에서 육군과 함께 맞서도록 계획되었다는 걸 생각할 수 있는 부분입니다. 물론 생각해 볼 것은 수군의 움직임만이 아닙니다. 적이 동래로 오는 동안, 동래성 전투의 전후과정 동안 경상좌도의 병력이 어떻게 움직였는지가 정말 중요하죠. 계속 연구가 이루어지고 있고, 앞으로도 계속 진행돼야 할 부분입니다. 흔히 나오는 것처럼 송상현만 열심히 싸웠고 나머지는 다 도망갔다... 이런 형식은 아닙니다. 그렇다고 통쾌하고 기쁜 이야기는 아니었지만요. 정발과 윤흥신이 끝까지 싸운 것은 물론 백성을 지키고 국가에 대한 충성하기 위해서였을 겁니다. 하지만 그냥 뒷일 생각 없이 그냥 싸운 건 아닐 겁니다. 적의 침입을 위에 보고하고 주변에 알리고 자기가 맡은 일을 한 것이겠죠. 버틸 수 있다면 원군이 올 때까지 버티는 것이고, 버틸 수 없다면 아군을 위해 최대한 시간을 끄는 것이었습니다. 후방에서 적을 무찌를 병력이 모일 때까지 말이죠. 동래성 전투를 보면 그게 어떻게 진행됐는지를 볼 수 있습니다. 일본군은 부산진을 점령하고 동래성으로 향합니다. 경상도 내에 적침이 알려졌고, 조선군도 분주히 움직이고 있었죠. 동래부사 송상현은 농성을 준비하면서 원군을 기다렸구요. ------------------------------------------------------------- 정말 오랜만입니다.
