요즘 알라딘 영화가 화제이지요. 다들 알라딘이 어떤 이야기인지 잘 아실 겁니다. 아그라바에서 도둑으로 살던 알라딘이란 친구가 있고, 자파의 음모에 빠져 동굴에 갇히게 되고, 지니와 양탄자와 아부의 도움으로 상황을 타개하고, 재스민과 사랑에 빠져서 정체를 숨기고 구혼하고, 근데 도둑놈이었다는 게 들통나서 위기에 빠지고, 그러다 결국 자파를 물리치고 메데타시 메데타시. 하지만 가만 생각해보면 알라딘은 디즈니가 만든 스토리가 아니죠. 잠깐 기억을 더듬어 보면 천일야화 같은 데 나오던 소설이란 것을 떠올릴 수 있습니다. 여기서 '같은 데'라고 표현하는 것은 알라딘은 천일야화에 원래부터 있던 이야기가 아니기 때문입니다. 프랑스인 앙투앙 갈랑이 천일야화를 유럽으로 처음 번역해 들여올 때, 이 과정을 돕던 한나 디얍이란 사람이 앙투앙 갈랑에게 따로 전해주어 추가로 포함된 이야기죠. 즉 알라딘은 천일야화 외전/동인지/패러디쯤 되는 셈입니다. 이 원작의 스토리는 디즈니의 버전과 사뭇 다릅니다. 캐릭터들 중심으로 살펴보면 빠른데요. 먼저 여기엔 자파가 없습니다. 비슷한 역할을 하는 악인이 있긴 한데 그저 사악한 마법사라고 나오죠. 이 사람은 본디 탁발승으로 신분을 위장하고 있던 것으로 서술됩니다. 재스민 역시 없고요. 그냥 공주라고 나오죠. 대부분의 민담이나 설화에서 '트로피'에 불과한 공주들의 이름이 별로 중요하지 않던 것처럼요. [엘에스디 님 제보 : 공주의 이름은 Badr al-Budur라고 합니다. ] 당연히 하늘을 나는 양탄자, 도움을 주는 아부란 원숭이, 어깃장 놓고 다니는 이아고 같은 앵무새도 없죠. 또한 지니 지니(진)는 하나가 아니라 둘입니다. 반지의 진과 램프의 진이 별도로 존재하지요. 반지의 진은 사악한 마법사가 갖고 있던 기본 템에서 나온 것이고 램프의 진은 한참 나중에 등장합니다. 좀 오래 된 알라딘 국역본 같은 것들 보면 이런 진들을 '마신'이라고 번역해놓았지요. 예전에 온게임넷 스타리그의 해설자 엄재경이 현재 조작범으로 전락한 프로게이머 마재윤을 두고서 마신이라고 별명을 붙였다가 팬들에게 '기존 별명인 마에스트로가 나은 것 같은데 마신이 뭐야 마신이 만날 별명 붙였다 하면 무슨무슨 신이래'라고 빈축을 샀는데, 어쩌면 엄재경 세대의 시각으로는 마에스트로보다는 마신이 훨씬 친숙하고 실감나는 별명이었을지도 모릅니다. 가장 결정적인 건 배경 공간입니다. 원작에선 알라딘이 중국인이며 이건 중국에서 일어난 스토리라고 명시하고 있어요. 아그라바 같은 건 없는 겁니다. 물론 알라딘을 비롯한 작중 등장인물들의 이름도 그렇고 문화적인 코드들도 영 중국 같지는 않습니다. 아마도 이 스토리가 만들어진 이슬람 세계, 혹은 사실상의 원작자로 추정되는 한나 디얍의 입장에서 중국을 상상해서 묘사한 것이기에 그런 것이겠죠. 혹자들은 중국은 중국인데 위구르족이나 중국 옆의 투르크메티스탄 같은 중국 서부의 유목적 무슬림들을 묘사한 게 아니냐는 의견을 내놓기도 합니다. 이러거나 저러거나 현대는 '하나의 중국'의 시대이므로 알라딘의 이름이 이슬람스럽든 이슬람교도든 상관없이 중국인이죠. 심지어 김용의 의천도룡기에선 페르시아 명교도 중국화 되니까 ㅋㅋ 말하자면 알라딘은 뮬란보다 앞선 최초의 디즈니 중국인인 셈이죠. 자.. 그럼 원작에 없던 요소들은 어디서 온 걸까요. 디즈니가 전부 만들어낸 걸까요? 그렇지 않습니다. 물론 천일야화에 실려 있던 알라딘이 정확히 어떤 과정을 거쳐 디즈니 알라딘이 되었는지 그 내역을 상세하게 추적하기는 어려울 겁니다. 알라딘은 소설로도, 영화로도, 애니메이션으로도, TV 드라마로도, 연극이나 뮤지컬로도 만들어진 적이 있는 등 버전이 아주 다양합니다. 또 그 과정에서 중동 계열의 이런저런 컨텐츠들이 알라딘을 차용하기도 하고 알라딘에 영향을 주기도 했고요. 대표적으로 '페르시아의 왕자' 게임 시리즈나 '욤욤 공주와 도둑The Thief And The Cobbler' 같은 애니메이션이 있죠. 그것들이 상호 어떤 관계를 맺고 있는지 일일이 추적하긴 어렵지요. 하지만 천일야화 알라딘의 코드가 처음에 어떤 식으로 영화 산업에 이식되었는지를 알려주는 고전 작품이 몇 개 있기는 합니다. 먼저 1924년 작 '바그다드의 도둑The Thief of Bagdad'이 있습니다. 시놉시스는 다음과 같습니다. 바그다드에서 도둑질로 연명하던 [아메드]라는 남주가 우연히 공주의 모습을 보게 되고 그 미모에 홀리게 되고, 신랑감 선발 대회에 [이국의 왕자]로 위장하여 출전하게 되죠. 하지만 이윽고 정체가 탄로나 식인 원숭이에게 잡아먹힐 위기에 처하게 됩니다. 알라딘과 아주 흡사한 서사구조죠. 심지어 [하늘을 나는 양탄자]도 나옵니다. 공주와 결혼하여 바그다드를 정복하려는 중국인에 가까운 '몽골 왕자'가 사용하지요.   우리가 알고 있는 알라딘의 코드들은 여기서 시작된 것입니다. 이미 이때에도 알라딘은 페르시아도 중국도 아닌 아라비아의 스토리라는 인식이 굳어져 있었다는 것을 확인할 수 있지만, 한편으로도 중국인 코드가 부분적으로나마 남아 있기도 합니다. 아시안 배우들의 출연 비중이 꽤 높기도 하고요. 당시 아시안계 여성 배우 중에서는 가장 이름값이 높았던 축이었던 중국계 2세 안나 메이 왕이 악역으로 출연하기도 했습니다. 그리고 16년 뒤인 1940년에 이 작품은 리메이크가 됩니다. 이번에는 [아메드]라는 왕자가 [자파]라는 대신의 음모에 빠져 [아부]라는 도둑과 함께 감옥에 수용됩니다. 여기서 빠져나온 아부는 자파의 함정을 피해 달아나다가 램프의 요정 [지니]를 만나 3가지 소원을 빌게 되고 결과적으로는 아메드를 구하고 아메드는 공주와 해피하게 살게 되는 그런 마무리죠. 네. 여기서부터 자파라는 캐릭터가 등장합니다. 그리고 다들 기억하시다시피 아부는 디즈니 알라딘에 나오는 원숭이 녀석이죠. 디즈니 알라딘에서 아부가 알라딘의 분신격이라는 점을 생각하면 의미심장합니다. 말하자면 원작 알라딘의 캐릭터를 아메드 왕자와 아부 도둑이란 롤로 쪼개어 병존시킨 것이 이 1940년 작이고, 이렇게 병렬적으로 존재하던 아부와 아메드를 직렬적으로 연결하여 알라딘이란 캐릭터를 일원적으로 재통합한 다음 40년 작에서 반쪽짜리 알라딘이었던 아부란 이름을 재구축 된 알라딘의 분신에다 붙인 게 디즈니 알라딘인 셈이죠. 결정적으로 이 작품에선 반지의 지니가 등장하지 않고 램프의 지니만 등장합니다. 그렇게 지니란 캐릭터가 단일인격으로 정립된 거고요. 즉 1940년경에 우리가 아는 디즈니 알라딘의 원천이 될만한 골격 자체는 완성이 되어 있었다고 할 수 있습니다. 거칠게 말하면 바그다드의 도둑들의 판본을 종합하여 애니메이션으로 리메이크 한 것이죠. 하지만 월드 미디어가 정립된 이후에 나온 디즈니 알라딘의 파급력은 어마어마했고, 그 전에 다양하게 난립해 있던 알라딘 버전과 코드들은 모두 디즈니 스타일로 통일되었습니다. 디즈니 알라딘 이후에 나온 이후 거의 모든 동화책이나 만화책에서 도둑놈 알라딘과 공주와 푸르딩딩한 지니를 묘사했고, 북아프리카인지 아라비아인지 페르시아인지 인도인지 명확하지 않은 어딘가가 적당히 배경으로 설정되었죠. 그리고 2019년 현재 우리는 알라딘의 실사 영화판을 바라보고 있습니다. 그리고 자연스럽게 알라딘을 서남아시아 어딘가의 인도스러운 이란스러운 이야기라고 받아들이고요. 어떤 의미에서 알라딘의 원전은, 정석은 이제 천일야화나 한나 니얍이나 앙투앙 갈랑이 아니라 디즈니가 된 것이죠. 지금에 와서 알라딘은 원래 '이슬람의 시각에 비쳐진 중국 이야기'라고 말하는 건 고리타분한 발상일지 모릅니다. 본디 서사라는 게, 전승이란 게, 밈이라는 게 그런 식으로 갈라지고 합쳐지고 변형되고 하면서 조금씩 바뀌고 업데이트 되는 거니까요. 나관중 이전의 삼국지들이 모두 삼국지연의에 잡아먹히고, 한국에선 삼국지연의가 이문열 평역 삼국지에 잡아먹혔듯 알라딘 역시도 바그다드의 도둑에, 바그다드의 도둑은 디즈니 알라딘에 흡수 통합 되어 흔적만 남는 게 당연한 겁니다. 어쨌거나 우리에게 더 현실적이고 창조적으로 받아들여지는 판본이야말로 정본이 되는 것이고 원래 정본이 무엇이었는지는 아무래도 좋은 것이죠. 하지만 한편으로 이런 생각도 해봅니다. 본디 알라딘이 중국 이야기에서 페르시아의 '천일야화'가 되고, 이것이 또 '아라비안 나이트'라 일컬어지게 된 것은 유럽인들의 입장에서 '아무래도 좋았'기 때문입니다. 아랍인이 쓴 중국이야기나 아랍에서 들여온 이야기나 페르시아나 아랍이나 중국이나 몽골이나 거기서 거기었던 것이죠. 그리고 현대에 와서 알라딘이 서남아시아권 어딘가를 연상시키는 이야기가 된 것 역시 마찬가지입니다. 할리웃 애니메이션의 관점에서 이슬람이든 힌디든 페르시아든 아라비아든 인도든 대충 미국과 시차 12시간쯤 나는 곳이면 어디든 상관 없었던 것이죠. 어차피 나 아닌 남은 다 '거기서 거기'니까요. 우리 입장에서 미국인은 다 미국인이고 중국인은 다 중국인이고 유럽인은 다 유럽인이듯. 혹은 서구사회에서 한중일을 다 같은 이스트 에이전이라고 묶고 어떤 차이가 있는지 잘 알지 못하듯. 이런 것들은 남의 일이면 아무래도 좋은 것이지만 우리의 일이 되면 신경이 민감해지는 그런 일들이죠. 서울 아니면 다 시골 아니냐고 진지하게 반문하는 서울 거주민이 막상 서울 전체를 싸잡아 비판하는 의견에 대해서는 '나 사는 동네는 말이 서울이지 시골만도 못해 ㅜㅠ'라고 한편으로 항변하듯. 여기서 우리는 개정과 변화라는 것이 흔히 그렇듯이 서사의 전승 역시도 마찬가지라는 것을 알 수 있습니다. 무언가 바뀌어 나간다는 것은, 새로운 것이 만들어진다는 것은, 낡은 것을 신선하게 바꾼다는 것은, 창조적이고 생산적인 만큼이나 파괴적이고 폭력적인 구석이 있다는 것이죠. 앙그라마이뉴와 스펜타 마이뉴가 동전의 양면이고 브라흐마와 비슈누와 시바가 하나이듯이요. 매끄럽고 생기 발랄한 서사에 몰입하기 위해서는 '자잘한 것'들은 곁가지 치고 지워버리고 생략하여 걸리적거리는 것이 없어야 하는 것입니다. 그 과정에서 아메드가 알라딘이 되기도 하고 아부가 원숭이가 되기도 하고 탁발승이 자파가 되기도 하고 자파가 좌파가 되기도 하고 인도인도 이랍인도 하나의 중국이 되기도 하고 그런 거고요. 이를 두고 옳고 그름을 따지기는 어려울 겁니다. 하지만 한편으로 아무래도 상관 없다면, 보다 복고적이거나 회귀적이거나 혹은 근본적인 측면을 다시금 강조하는 것 역시도 상관 없지 않을까요. 알라딘이 이슬람이든 시아파든 수니파든 페르시아든 아랍이든 중국이든 인도든 어디의 이야기라고 상관없는 것 역시 흐름이라면, 알라딘 코드가 정립되어 온 코드를 역추적해 보고 지금까지 간과된 바나 무심하게 넘긴 바를 상기시켜 보는 것 역시 하나의 흐름이고요. 그러다 보면 그 역시도 새로운 창조의 동력이 되어 어제까지 '새로움'이었던 것을 낡은 것으로 만들고 개정하고 업데이트 하여 생기를 불어넣을 수도 있겠죠. 그때 즈음이면 어쩌면 한국계 알라딘과 재스민이 인도계나 북아프리카계 알라딘과 재스민보다 '자연스러워' 보일지도 모르는 거고요. 한때나마 사람들이 삼국장군전을 보며 TS된 장비를 자연스럽게 받아들였듯. 그 와중에 그 옛날 악역이었던 몽골 왕자가 칭기즈칸으로 둔갑할지도 모르는 걸 테고요. * Cascade님에 의해서 티타임 게시판으로부터 게시물 복사되었습니다 (2019-06-11 19:56) * 관리사유 : 추천게시판으로 복사합니다.
