https://youtu.be/H0IRLjIomYI '그리스도 최후의 유혹'이란 스코세시의 영화가 있죠. 니코스 카잔차키스의 소설을 영화화한 작품인데, '인간 예수'를 묘사해서 크게 논란이 일었던 작품입니다. 이 영화에서 예수는 성욕이나 공명심이나 명예욕 같은 인간적 욕망에 휘둘리다가 그것을 극복하고 스스로 순교를 결단하는 인물로 그려지는데, 당연히 신성모독이란 비판이 가해졌죠. 심지어 몇몇 개신교계 극장 체인에서는 영화 상영을 보이콧 할 정도였어요. 개독들이라서 그런 것도 아닙니다. 교황청과 정교회에서도 비슷하게 비판을 했고, 실제로 그리스, 아르헨티나, 칠레 등등 크리스트교가 국교인 국가들은 대부분 이 영화의 상영을 금지했습니다. 심지어 파리에서는 몇몇 카톨릭 신자들이 작당해서 이 영화를 상영하고 있던 생 미셸 극장에 방화 테러를 벌이기도 했어요. 사실 당연한 게, 애시당초 카잔차키스의 원작 자체가 교황청과 정교회로부터 금서로 지정되었거든요. 심지어 정교회에서는 카잔차키스를 파문했으며, 사후에 카잔차키스가 정교식 장례를 치르는 것도 금지했고, 아테네에 매장하지도 못하게 막았습니다. 한 마디로 '최후의 유혹'은 기독교계에서 독성瀆聖이라고 공인한 작품입니다. 하지만 그럼에도 불구하고 적잖은 크리스천들이 원작과 영화를 감상했고 긍정적으로 평가하고 있죠. 레프 톨스토이는 러시아의 국민 작가입니다. 심지어 2016년 러시아 전역의 1600명의 시민을 대상으로 치러진 설문 조사에서도 45%의 득표율을 기록하며 러시아 최고의 작가로 공인받았죠. 그런데 정작 톨스토이는 정교회 신자가 아닙니다. 이는 톨스토이가 '부활' 등의 작품에서 공공연하게 러시아 정교회를 비판했기 때문이죠. 기실 톨스토이는 크리스트교의 근본적인 가르침과 정교회의 교리는 아무 상관이 없다고 주장하는 사람이었습니다. 삼위일체론도 부정했고, 제례 형식들이나 교회 조직도 신앙과 하등 관계가 없다고 말했어요. 당연히 정교회 입장에서는 배교자라 여길 수밖에 없었죠. 심지어 100년이 지난 지금조차도 정교회는 톨스토이에게 내린 파문을 철회하지 않고 있습니다. 재미있는 일이죠. 러시아인들이 톨스토이를 최고의 작가로 꼽는 이유는 그의 작품들이 신앙적이기 때문인데 정작 러시아 정교회에서는 톨스토이를 불신자로 간주하고 있으니. 이처럼 어떤 종교든지 종교인 이상 세속의 논리와 이질적인 자신들만의 내적 이념체계를 갖고 있기 마련이고, 이것은 우리가 일반적으로 생각하는 독실함과는 상이한 구석이 있습니다. 그 때문에 이런저런 내부 알력이 발생하고요. 부외자의 시선으로는 이해하기 어렵고, 내부에서도 철두철미하게 지켜지는 규범은 아니지만, 어쨌든 명시적으로는 해당 종교의 금기로서 간주되는 것들이 있고 그것을 관철하려는 유무형의 압박이 뒤따르죠. 당연히 이건 일률적으로 판단할 수 있는 것이 아닙니다. 종교의 근간이 도그마인 이상 근본주의적 원칙을 고수한다는 이유로 해당 종교를 비판할 수 없어요. 그건 그들만의 로컬 룰이죠. 하지만 그렇다고 그 로컬 룰을 지키지 않는 모든 신자가 신심이 얕다고 말할 수도 없을 겁니다. 왜냐하면 이건 결국 인간의 신앙일 따름이거든요. 신자들이란 불신자들과 유전구조가 다르다거나 욕구 체계가 호환 불가능한 이계인이나 초월자가 아니란 것입니다. 모두 다 똑같이 욕망하고 의욕하며 희노애락을 느끼는 사람의 아들이고, 인간적 한계를 벗어나지 못하는 선에서 '그럼에도 불구하고' 자신의 근간을 지키기로 결단한 사람들이죠. 마치 '최후의 유혹'을 느낀 예수가 그러했던 것처럼. 보다 비근한 사례를 들어볼까요. 개신교에서는 이런저런 탈속적인 규범들이 통용됩니다. 흔하게는 술이나 담배가 있죠. 가장 민감한 건 혼전순결이나 수음, 동성애, 중절 같은 성적 문제들일 겁니다. 물론 이런 것들이 성서에 명시되었다고 단언하기는 어려운 측면이 있어요. 그러나 사람이 떡으로만 살지 않듯 종교적 규범 역시도 경전으로만 구성되지 않습니다. 수도 이전이 관습헌법과 관련된 문제인 것과 마찬가지로 종교적 규범은 해당 종교의 내부적 전통에 크게 의존하죠. 법전이 다가 아니라 판례도 그만치로 중요한 겁니다. 특히 개신교처럼 개교회주의를 고수하고 있고 경전 해석의 자유가 만인에게 주어져 있으며 사제의 계급성을 인정하지 않는 평민적 종교는 그런 전통 규칙의 지위가 높을 수밖에 없죠. 실제로 상당수의 개신교인은 카톨릭 신부들이 술과 담배를 기호로 즐긴다는 이유로 존경하지 않아요. 자신들은 평신도인데도 안 하고 사는데 저 치들은 사제 주제에 방종하게 산다는 거죠. 그 정도의 구속력이 있는 지침이란 겁니다. 마찬가지로 혼전순결, 반동성애, 중절 금지, 수음 금지 등은 한국이든 미국이든 유럽이든 크리스트교계에서 공공연하게 천명되는 원칙이에요. 지키는 사람이 많지 않아 사실상 사문화 되었다고 한들 '사실상 사문화'와 진짜 사문화는 광년 단위의 격차가 있습니다. 어쨌든 오늘날까지도 저런 규범들이 각 교인에게 위압과 제약을 가하고 있거든요. 예컨대 저만해도 사춘기 이전부터 혼전순결과 수음 금지를 부모님께 권면 받았어요. 심지어 어머니는 수음이 뭔지도 모른 채 몽정을 한 초등학교 6학년을 데리고서 혹시 수음을 한 거라면 다음부턴 그래선 안 된다고 일깨우셨죠. 그게 관성이 되어서 지금까지도 수음을 한 적이 없어요. 물론 이건 이례적인 사례지만 여하간 그 정도의 정서적 압박이 가해졌다는 겁니다. 이게 저만의 개인적인 사례도 아닐 테고요. 아마 여성의 경우 특히 성적 억압을 더 강하게 받았겠죠. 실제로 저희 집도 여동생에게 더 엄격했으니까요. 이외에도 금기는 다양했어요. 일요일엔 상품 구매가 금지되었고, 스타크래프트나 창세기전 시리즈 같은 배교적 게임도 제재를 받았고, 교회 끝나고 애들하고 PC방 가면 욕을 먹었고.. 그런 게 신심을 증명하는 제례였죠. http://www.healthlife.co.kr/month02_section01_view.html?no=767&PHPSESSID=8ff37fe9d888570e34982501b4eb8886 이러한 규범들은 해당 종교에서 내적으로 불문법적 체계를 이루고 있는 것이 엄연한 현실입니다. 하지만 그렇다고 신심의 척도로 기능할 수 있느냐, 그로부터 이탈했을 경우 불신이나 배교 행위라고 말할 수 있느냐는 단언하기 어려운 문제일 겁니다. 최소한도 해당 종교 내에서 제의적 맥락을 체득하고 있는 이들 사이에서 가까스로 가늠할까 말까 할 문제이지, 종교적 열정이란 것이 어떤 조건에 놓여 있는지 알기 어려운 외부자들이 논해봐야 변죽을 울릴 수밖에 없지요. 당연히 논할 수는 있지만 장님 코끼리 만지기 이상이 안 될 겁니다. 그 이상을 논하기 위해서는 그만큼 타인의 삶을 이해해야겠다는 결의가 있어야 합니다. 내부를 논하기 위해선 먼저 내부를 알아야 하는 것이죠. 어떤 면에서는 도리어 신자'임에도 불구하고'가 아니라 신자'이기에' 일탈적일 수 있어요. 지금까지 암시했던 것처럼 신앙을 유지한다는 것은 상당한 극기와 자기부정을 요합니다. 특히 크리스트교 계열 같은 일신교는 인본주의가 아니라 신본주의이기 때문에 본인의 욕망에 정직한 것 자체가 죄악이고 세상만사를 신의 관점에서 판단해야 하죠. 자기 결정이란 있을 수 없으며 자신을 배반하고 섭리에 순응해야 해요. 이건 당연히 내적으로 상당한 정신적 스트레스를 가하고요. 스스로의 사고와 욕구와 갈망을 부인하고 윤리적 규범에 자신을 제물로 바쳐야 하는 해체의 과정입니다. 하지만 인간이기에, 그것에는 적절한 해방구가 필요합니다. 현대로 올수록 기성종교들의 교조성은 약화되고 신도와 사제에게 적용되던 이런저런 금기들도 해체되고 있는데, 그런 것들 역시도 마찬가지일 겁니다. 우리 모두 '사람의 아들'이라는 걸 인정하는 것이죠. 그렇게 종래에는 거부되었던 인문적 관습들도 하나의 삶의 방식이자 구원에 이르는 길로 승인되고요. 사도 바울은 유태교 전통 율법의 허상성을 논하면서 오직 행위자 본인의 믿음만이 구원의 척도라고 주장했습니다. 왜냐하면 율법은 신앙과 윤리라는 명분으로 제도적 억압을 가하여 궁극적으로는 이국인과 불신자를 배척하고 민족주의적 패권주의를 관철하는 프로크루스테스의 침대로 전락했다고 보았기 때문입니다. 쉽게 말해 남을 가혹하게 단죄하면서 스스로의 도덕적 확신을 확증편향적으로 강화시키는 위선을 율법주의가 조장하고 있다는 것이죠. 이런 폐쇄성을 탈피하여 모두에게 입교의 문을 열어주는 방법이 각자의 신앙을 있는 그대로 인정하는 존중이었고요. 구원은 각기 내적으로 감당할 문제이지, 타인이 규범적 잣대로 측량할 수 있는 대상이 아니라는 결론을 내린 것입니다. 즉 자기 부정을 근간으로 삼는 폐쇄적인 도그마의 근원을 거슬러 올라가 역설적으로 자기 긍정의 근거를 찾아냈다는 것이죠. 그런 급진적 전회를 통해서 크리스트교는 소수의 사제만이 카르텔을 이루는 민족 종교가 아니라 빈자도 죄인도 악인도 포괄하는 보편 종교가 될 수 있었고요. 이렇게 성취한 보편성을 다시 그들만의 천국으로 축소하려는 시도야말로 배교적인 신성모독일 겁니다.
