 죽음이란, 노화란 뭘까요. 여러가지 대답이 가능하겠지만 기억에 남는 멋진 해석을 보여준 것을 꼽자면 '왓치맨'에서 등장인물 홀리스 메이슨이 사망하는 장면입니다. 이 사람은 젊은 시절엔 나이트 아울이라 불리는 히어로였으며, 자경단으로서 '나름의 정의'를 실현했지요. 하지만 세월엔 장사가 없는지라, 나이든 뒤엔 자신보다 젊고 정력 넘치는 히어로들에게 자리를 물려주고 은퇴합니다. 그리고 동료들은 메이슨을 '리스펙'하는 의미로 그의 전신을 조각한 골든 트로피를 선물하지요. 이것이 그의 평생 자랑거리가 됩니다. 비록 늙고 지쳐 더 할 수 있는 일도 더 하고 싶은 일도 없는 초라한 여생을 살아가야 합니다만, 그래도 이 트로피가 있기에, 모두가 그의 공헌을 잊지 않고 기억한다는 증거물이 있기에 인생을 헛산 게 아니라고 자부할 수 있는 것이죠. 그리하여 그는 무기력하지만 여유로운 노년을 보냅니다. 자신의 이름을 이어받고 자신을 존중해주는 2대 나이트 아울과 술을 나누고, 동네 아이들을 귀여워해주며 자선을 하고.. 그렇게 적당히 살아가죠. 하지만 어느 핼러윈 데이, 그는 집을 습격하기 위해 찾아온 양아치들을 사탕을 받으러 온 꼬마들로 오인하고 문을 열어주었다가 린치를 당해 죽게 되죠. 살해 수단은 아이러니 하게도.. 그의 전 인생과 명예를 증거하던 골든 트로피였죠. 메이슨의 죽음은 우리가 가진 역량과 능력이란 지극히 한시적으로 왔다 가는 덧없는 진Djinn에 불과하단 것을 일깨워줍니다. 예컨대 나이트 아울 시절의 메이슨이었다면 저런 족보도 없는 양아치들쯤이야 우습게 박살 낼 수 있었을 겁니다. 하지만 그건 수십 년 전 이야기고, 이미 노쇠한 메이슨은 변변한 저항조차 못하고 살해당하죠. 바닥에 쓰러진 독거노인의 버둥거림 속에서는 나이트 아울의 성명절기였다는 절륜한 레프트 훅의 자취를 찾아볼 수 없습니다. 수백 수천 수억 번을 휘두른 끝에 가격의 모든 것을 이해하여 나온 펀치인데도 불구하고 말이죠. 우리가 가진 여러 가지 미덕과 장점과 전문성도 그렇게 사라질 것입니다. 내가 숱한 난관과 훈련을 반복한 끝에 손안에 움켜쥐었다고 생각했던 나의 능력이 이미 모래처럼 빠져나갔다는 것, 마치 비현실적인 초능력처럼 홀연히 왔다가 홀연히 갔다는 것, 그리고 처음부터 그건 내 능력이 아니었단 것을 깨닫게 되겠죠. 아 옛날이여... 노인을 위한 나라는 없는 것이죠. 이런 절대적인 무력이야말로 노화고 죽음일 테고요. 그런 숙명 앞에서 늙은이가 선택할 수 있는 모범적인 우회책은 '트로피'를 남기는 것입니다. 즉 자신을 존중하고 공경하는 후손들과 후배들과 사회 공동체 안으로 들어가는 것이죠. 비록 현재 아무것도 할 수 없는 폐물이 되었을지라도 과거 팔팔했던 시절 자신이 쌓은 경력과 위업과 명예를 기억해주는 사람들이 있다면 자신의 전성기는 영원한 것이니까요. 그래서 그들은 설쳐대지 않습니다. 어차피 자신이 실제로 할 수 있는 것은 없는 이상 나대봤자 체면만 깎일 뿐이고, 그저 어르신으로서, 원로로서 위엄을 잃지 않는 겸허한 태도를 고수하면서 사람들의 존중 어린 시선을 만끽하는 게 최선이라는 것을 아니까요. 도리어 아무것도 할 수 없다는 노년의 특성 그 자체가 사람들의 존경을 얻어내는 데에 필수적입니다. 그는 무능력하기에 누구도 지배하고 가해하고 탄압하지 않을 테니까요. 누구에게도 위험하지 않은 존재만이 사람들을 안심시키는 법이죠. 그렇게 '커뮤니티'에 귀의하는 것이고요. 그야 간혹 물정 모르고 젊은 시절마냥 날뛰는 이도 없는 것은 아닙니다만, 그들은 곧바로 커뮤니티에 의해 단죄됩니다. '나이를 먹으려면 곱게 먹어야지'라고. 찰스 바클리가 그린과 듀란트에게 빈축을 사듯이. 메이슨도 이러한 사실을 알고 있었습니다. 그러하기에 설쳐대지 않고 국으로 가만히 찌그러져 있으면서 2대 나이트 아울의 겅호를 받고 동네 아이들과의 우정을 누리며 본인은 그저 무능력한 할배고 모두에게 안전한 존재라는 것을 광고했죠. 사람들의 인정하에선 여전히 영예로울 수 있으니까요. 하지만 이런 '트로피'는 역시나 객관적인 실재는 아닙니다. 그저 사회적 인정이고, 사람들의 '관념'에 불과하다는 점에서 커뮤니티즘이죠. 누구에게도 기댈 수 없고 비빌 언덕이 없는 상황에서 늙은이는 여전히 똑같이 무력합니다. 따라서 이것은 어디까지나 우회책이 될 수밖에 없습니다. 실상 모래밭에 머리를 박는 타조와도 같은 것이죠. 통시적으로 일 개인이 어떤 업적과 '레거시'를 남겼든 간에, 물리적으로 작동하는 현실 앞에서는 아무 의미가 없으니까요. 가령 마이클 조던이 전성기 시절에 쓰리핏을 두 번 했든 어쨌든 간에, 지금은 맥기 따위에게도 파리채 블로킹 두 자릿수 쯤 찍히고는 탈진할 겁니다. 물론 사람들은 '저 친구 전성기에 뭘 했는지도 모르는 것들이 50 먹은 사람 데려다가 뭐하는 거야. 이건 공평하지 않아'라고 어이없어할 겁니다. 하지만 그런 '사람들'이 존재하지 않는다면? 자연에는 공평함이란 없으므로, 그냥 맥기>>>>넘사벽>>>>> 조던이죠. 그리고 똑같은 일이 미래에 반복될 테고요. 결국 트로피란 실체가 없는 것입니다. 내 인생을 증언해준다고 믿었던 골든 트로피는 사실은 내 두개골을 깨부수는 금속뭉치에 불과했던 거죠. 이같은 사실들은 역설적으로 우리의 젊음이 설명 불가능하다는 것을 암시합니다. 설명이 불가능한 객체이기에 우리에게 이유 없이 오기에 이유 없이 가지요. 그 냉엄한 사실을 인정하든 못하든 상관없어요. 어차피 물은 아래로 떨어지고 해는 서쪽에서 지고 시간은 무정히 흐르기만 하니까요. 순간을 기억하는 이들, 젊음을 무한히 반복시켜주는 이들이 모여 제의를 통해 시간을 고정하려 하지만, 그래 봐야 핼러윈 데이에 사탕을 받으러 온 꼬마들과 다를 바 없는 것이죠. 메이슨의 죽음을 지켜줄 수 있을 리 없는. * 영화에서는 이걸 영웅적인 분투로 그렸는데, 작품의 주제나 서사의 전개 흐름을 미루어놓고 볼 때 부적절하다 싶습니다. 넘나 느끼한 것.. 어차피 위엄 좀 보여줘봐야 상대는 동네 양아치들인지라 가오 안 산다능.. * Toby님에 의해서 티타임 게시판으로부터 게시물 복사되었습니다 (2018-08-28 11:08) * 관리사유 : 추천게시판으로 복사합니다. 흥미진진하고 즐거운 글 잘 읽었습니다. 감사합니다 :)
그런데... 메이슨 영감님의 마지막이 영웅적이었던가요? 저는 초라함, 허무함을 보여주려는 의도로 이해했었거든요.
격투+회상+BGM을 섞어 표현해서 영웅적인 부분도 있지만, 마지막에 음악이 끝나고 무자비하게 후려치는 부분에서 '아.. 인생 덧없구나' 그런 생각을 했던 기억이 납니다 ^^;
왓치맨 얘기하고 나니 얼티밋판 블루레이 사고 싶네요. 집에는 일반판만 있어서리..
