"내가 천하의 군사를 가지고도 작은 오랑캐에게 곤욕을 당한 것은 무엇 때문인가?" 당태종이 이리 말하니 이도종은 이전의 방책을 말합니다. 안시성에 집중하지 말고 별동대를 보내 평양을 직공한다는 것 말이죠. 태종은 그 때는 급해서 제대로 듣지 못 했다고 하죠. 그러면서 다시 작전을 짭니다. 고구려를 포기할 생각은 없었습니다. 하지만 수양제와는 다르게 현실을 인정하고, 다른 방법을 찾았죠. 결론은 이랬습니다. "고구려는 산에 의지하여 성을 만들었기 때문에 조기에 무너뜨릴 수 없다. 이전에 황제가 직접 원정을 나갔을 때, 그 백성들은 농사를 짓지 못했으며, 우리가 정복한 성에서는 곡물들을 수확하였으나, 가뭄이 계속되어 대부분의 백성이 식량이 부족하게 되었다. 만약 적은 수의 군대를 자주 보내어 그 영역을 번갈아 침략하여 그들이 방어하는데 지치게 만들고, 쟁기를 놓고 싸움터로 나가게 한다면, 수년 내에 천리의 들판은 적막해질 것이며, 민심은 저절로 멀어질 것이다. 이렇게 되면 압록강 이북은 싸우지 않고도 빼앗을 수 있을 것이다" 소모전이었죠. 방법은 두 가지였습니다. 요동 방어선을 적은 병력으로 공격하는 게 첫째였습니다. 그 수는 일만에서 많아야 몇 만에 불과했지만, 고구려에겐 여전히 대군이었죠. 다음은 수군이었습니다. 압록강 등 후방을 공격하게 한 것이죠. 647년에 시작했고, 648년에 다시 대군을 일으킬까 하다가 소모전을 계속 합니다. 대부분 당군이 적당히 이긴 후 빠진 걸로 나옵니다. 중국의 기록이니 패배가 누락된 것일 수도 있지만, 어차피 손해가 비슷하기만 하면 당에 이득인 게임이었습니다. 태종의 계산대로 간 것이고, 고구려가 이걸 해결할 방법은 없었죠. 연개소문은 전쟁이 끝나자마자 사신을 보냈고, 이후 매년마다 계속 보냅니다. 하지만 태종은 여전히 고구려가 정신을 못 차린다면서 거부합니다. 명분이야 뻔했죠. 당의 사신에게 무례하게 대한다, 신라를 여전히 공격한다... 아직 잘못을 뉘우치지 않았다는 겁니다. 사신에게 얼마나 거만하게 나왔는지는 알 수 없습니다만 신라 문제는 고구려도 포기할 생각이 없었습니다. 어차피 이번 전쟁도 이긴 상황, 당을 도운 신라에 대한 원한은 더 깊어질 수 밖에요. 당에겐 여전히 정말 좋은 장기말이자 명분이었습니다. 물론 신라와 화친한다고 태종이 포기하진 않았겠지만요. 그렇게 고구려가 말라가는 동안 태종은 다시 대군을 동원할 준비를 하고 있었습니다. 그러던 649년, 태종이 죽습니다. 중국사나 세계사 속의 당태종, 혹은 그 자신의 업적이나 인간성에 대한 얘기를 하려면 길겠지만 여기는 그런 얘기를 할 곳이 아니죠 ( '-') 태종은 유언으로 요하를 다시 넘지 마라, 즉 고구려를 다시 치지 마라는 말을 남겼다 합니다. 이렇게 고구려는 역사에 길이 남을 명군의 공격을 끝내 막아냅니다. 정말 간만에 고구려인들은 마음 푹 놓고 잤겠죠. 김부식은 고구려의 멸망을 평하면서 대국의 명령을 거역하고 사신을 가두는 등 겁이 없어서 전쟁을 자초한 걸 원인 중 하나로 꼽고 있습니다. 하지만 태종이 죽었을 때는 태종의 고구려 공격은 어리석은 짓이었다며 열심히 까죠. 그 자신도 생각을 확실히 정하지 못한 모양입니다. 고구려가 이길 땐 정말 그 자신도 좋고 신나지만 어쨌든 수, 당은 황제국인데 잘 했어야지 이런 느낌이죠. 이건 뒤의 유학자들도 마찬가지였구요. 사대는 하는 게 맞지만 그래도 지 마음대로 쳐들어온 대국을 이기니까 좋다 잘 한다 (...) 뭐 이런 평가들은 뒤에서 다시 하기로 하죠. 그렇게 끝이 나나 했지만... 당고종은 아버지의 유언을 지킬 생각이 없었죠. 오히려 아버지를 패배시킨 고구려에 복수(-_-)하고, 아버지도 못한 업적을 쌓고 싶었던 모양입니다. 고구려의 존재에 대한 위험을 느끼는 거야 그 자신도 마찬가지일 거구요. 그의 재위 4년, 고구려에 대한 공격이 재개됩니다. 병력은 많지 않았겠지만, 또 시작이라는 걸 확실히 알 수 있었죠. 고구려도 가만히 있지 않았습니다. 다음 해에 (아마도 당 편을 들었을) 거란을 공격했죠. 당에 넘어간 거란, 말갈을 고구려로 돌리려 한 거겠지만 당군의 구원으로 패합니다. 한편 신라에 대한 여제의 공격도 계속됩니다. 648년에 백제의 장군 의직이 신라 성 10여성을 점령합니다. 김유신이 나서서 격퇴하지만, 빼앗긴 성들을 되찾았는지는 모르겠습니다. 다음 해에는 장군 은상에게 성 7개를 빼앗깁니다. 역시 김유신이 나서서 격퇴하죠. 이 다음 해인 650년에 당에 보낸 게 치당태평송입니다. 얼마나 처절한 상황인지 알 수 있죠. 신라의 국력, 신라군의 능력으로는 이 상황을 바꿀 수 없었습니다. 김유신이 정말 열심히 뛰어주고 있지만 거기에 과장이 얼마나 될 지 알 수 없으며, 다 사실이라 해도 방어를 계속 하고 있는 것이지 열세를 만회할 정도는 될 수 없었죠. 결국 외교밖에 없었습니다. 그 중심에는 김춘추가 있었습니다. ----------------------------------------------------------------- 진지왕의 손자, 김용수의 아들, 진지왕이 잘 살았다면 이미 태자거나 왕이 되어 있었을 사람입니다. 그래도 용수도 잘 나갔고, 그 역시 승승장구해서 대야성이 함락될 때는 이미 2등 관등인 이찬에 있었습니다. 그의 세력 역시 작지 않았을 거구요. 가야계라서 약점이 있는 김유신과 결혼동맹을 맺으면서 군사적으로도 부족함이 없었구요. 645년, 그의 딸과 사위가 죽었을 때, 신라의 위기가 가득했던 순간에 그는 치열한 외교전을 시작합니다. 첫 차례는 고구려였죠. 소득은 없었지만, 다행히도 무사히 살아 돌아옵니다. 하지만 여기서 포기할 수가 없었죠. 647년, 비담의 난을 평정하고 진덕여왕이 즉위했던 해에 그는 왜로 갑니다. 우리 기록엔 없고 일본서기에만 있는 기록인데, 그 전해에 일본에서 인질의 파견을 요청했고 김춘추가 간 것이라 합니다. 일본에서 인질인 미사흔을 구하고 죽은 박제상을 기억하실 겁니다. 그를 기다린 아내는 망부석이 되었죠. 신라에게 일본은 위험한 곳이었습니다. (초기 기록이 맞다면) 건국 초부터 신라를 공격했고, 이후에도 백제나 가야와 손 잡거나 단독으로 공격을 해 왔었죠. 신라와도 교류야 있었겠지만 백제로 기울어져 있는 나라였고 이 때 백제와 신라는 원수지간이었습니다. 왜로 간다는 건 목숨을 걸어야 되는 거였죠. 그래도 이 때는 가능성이 있었습니다. 정권을 주름잡던 소가씨가 몰락했고, 634년에 고토쿠 덴노가 다이카 개신을 단행했을 때였습니다. 율령제를 비롯한 개혁을 진행하고 있었죠. 당의 선진문물이 어느 때보다 필요했습니다. 삼국 중 그 당과 연결된 게 신라였죠. 신라가 한강을 점령한 후 왜국 사신도 신라의 길을 빌려 당을 왕래하기도 했구요. (가도입당?) 왜 내부에서 친당-친신라의 움직임이 보였고 거기에 기대했다는 것이죠. 그 정도면 김춘추가 직접 갈 만 합니다. 일본서기에서는 김춘추를 외모에서나 화술에서나 훌륭했다고 전합니다. 가서 상당히 깊은 인상을 준 모양입니다. 하지만 뭔가 확실한 성과를 주진 못한 모양입니다. 이후로도 왜는 친백제 노선을 유지했으니까요. 다만 백제가 망하기 전까지 신라에 대한 침공이나 백제를 지원하는 움직임까지는 없습니다. 내부사정도 있겠지만, 당이나 신라와도 척지지 않는 선에서 사태를 관망한 걸로 분석됩니다. 왜국에 있어서도 대륙의 상황이 지난 수백년에 비해 크게 바뀌고 있었습니다. 뒤에 차차 말하겠지만, 이 전쟁이 진행되는 동안, 그리고 모두 끝난 후에는 일본도 나름의 변화를 맞이했죠. 바다 건너에 있다 하나 영향을 받을 수밖에 없었으니까요. 이러니 일본도 상황을 주시하면서 소극적인 모습을 보입니다. 아무튼 김춘추는 좋은 인상만을 주고 돌아옵니다. 바로 돌아온 걸 보면 인질은 일본서기식 과장으로 보이구요. 그리고 다시 바다를 건너죠. 이번엔 당으로 직접 가는 것이었습니다. 648년이었죠. ----------------------------------------------- "궁궐에 당도하자 춘추의 용모가 영준하고 늠름함을 보고 후하게 대우하였다." - 삼국사기 "당나라 황제는 춘추공의 풍채를 아름답게 여기고는 신성한 사람이라고 하면서 굳이 머물러서 자신을 모시게 하려고 하였지만, 극구 사양하고 돌아왔다." - 삼국유사 잘생기긴 했나 봅니다 (...) 태종은 그를 극진히 대우합니다. 대고구려 전략에 있어 신라의 중요성이 갈수록 올라가고 있었고 김춘추 그 개인의 능력도 있었을 테니까요. 김춘추의 전략도 좋았습니다. 중국의 제도를 따르는 한화정책을 하겠다고 했으니까요. 이렇게 독자적인 연호를 쓰던 것도 태화로 바꾸고 관복 등 각종 제도를 중국식으로 합니다. 또한 셋째 김문왕을 당에 남겨 태종을 숙위하게 합니다. (이전에 썼듯 인질의 느낌입니다) 이후 문무왕이 되는 김법민부터 (죽은 후긴 하지만) 유이한 태대각간이 되는 김인문까지, 김춘추의 가족들이 대당외교를 주도하게 되죠. 특히 김인문은 무려 22년이나 당에 살다 죽었지만, 끝까지 신라를 위해 일했죠. 여기서 그는 백제를 까면서 백제를 쳐 주기를 요청했고, 태종은 받아들입니다. 그로서도 고구려는 물론 백제까지 칠 좋은 명분이 생긴 거니까요. 이후 신라에서는 이 때 태종이 두 나라를 쳐부순 후 [평양 이남 백제 땅]을 주겠다고 약속했다고 주장합니다. 당에 남은 기록이 없어서 신빙성이 의심받긴 하지만, 신라가 계속 밀어붙이고 당에서도 결국 받아들인 걸 보면 그 말을 한 건 맞는 모양입니다. 선심성 공약이었을 수도 있죠. 백제를 친다는 약속도 십여년 후에야 그의 아들 대에야 지켰으니까요. 그 땅을 신라에게 준다는 약속도 지키지 않았구요. 이런 한화정책은 여제와 왜에 대한 압박이기도 했습니다. 신라가 확실히 당편이 되었다는 거니까요. 0하지만 이 때 당은 신라를 확실히 도와주지 않았고 오히려 여제에 대한 어그로만 더 커지는 거였습니다. 왜에 대해서도 그랬는데, 중국식으로 입은 사신이 가자 왜에서 열 받아서 돌려보냈다고 합니다. 왜에도 확실히 편을 정하라는 거였을 것이고, 결국 왜가 간 곳은 백제였습니다. 이후로는 버티기였습니다. 당은 반드시 고구려를 공격할 것이고 당이 이길 것이었습니다. 백제 역시 당이 공격해 줄 것입니다. 그 전까지 백제와 고구려는 신라를 계속 공격할 것이고, 그걸 막아내야 했습니다. 그에겐 정치적 동지이자 신라 최고의 명장인 김유신이 있었습니다. 그와 신라군의 능력, 신라인들의 힘을 믿을 뿐이었죠. 당군은 반드시 올 것이었습니다. 654년, 진덕여왕이 죽습니다. 이제 성골은 끝이었죠. 신하들은 우선 알천을 올렸지만, 알천은 늙고 덕이 없다며 김춘추를 추천합니다. 김춘추는 이렇게 남에게 양보 받고 세 번 사양하는 [의식]을 거쳐서 왕이 되었죠. 알천은 김유신에게 (어떤 이유로든) 밀려난 명장, 전편에 적었듯 김춘추-김유신 세력과 적당한 거래를 했을 겁니다. 애초에 김춘추는 진골 중에선 가장 성골에 가까운 계승 1순위였고, 그 자신과 김유신의 세력은 신라의 실권자였습니다. 그가 왕이 되는 건 당연한 거였죠. 자신이 신하로서 기틀을 다진 신라의 시스템에 그가 왕위에 올랐습니다. 그의 뜻대로 통치하긴 쉬웠겠죠. 이제 다시 버티기였습니다. 적들은 왕이 바뀌는 이 틈을 놓치지 않았고, 655년에 말갈까지 동원해 신라 북쪽의 성을 무려 33개나 빼앗습니다. 당에서 구원 요청을 듣고 소정방을 보내 요동을 치게 합니다. 이 덕분인지 그 이상의 공격은 없었죠. 이 성들 역시 탈환했는지 알 수 없습니다. +) 뭐 이런 점 때문에 보면 선덕여왕 때 그렇게 밀린 게 정말 그녀의 통치가 잘못된 것인지 의문이 드는 거죠 자세한 기록이야 없지만, 이후로는 좀 공격이 덜했을 것으로 추측됩니다. 이 시기부터 의자왕의 사치와 향락이 보이거든요. -_-a 백제의 내부 사정이 그리 좋지 않을 때였고, 고구려도 당과의 소모전이 재게되면서 신라에 집중할 수 없게 됐습니다. 하지만 집중하지 않았을 뿐 신라에 대한 공격은 계속된 모양이구요. 의자왕의 경우 신라에 대한 공격으로 그 정통성을 강화하려 했을 테니까요. 고구려도 신라를 포기하지 않았는지 658년이 되면 하서소경이라는 이름의 소경이었던 하슬라(강릉)이 주로 바뀝니다. 말갈과 맞닿게 되어 그랬다고 합니다. 그렇게 버티고 또 버텼습니다. 계속 당에 구원 요청을 하면서 말이죠. 이제는 고구려를 공격할 때다, 이제는 백제를 공격할 때다라고 하면서요. 그냥 살려달라고만 한 건 아니었습니다. 김유신의 경우 백제에 잡혀갔다 탈출한 조미압을 다시 보내서 정보를 캐게 합니다. 그러면서 현 백제의 상황을 보면 공격하기 쉬울 거라는 판단을 덧붙였겠죠. 실제로 백제는 당의 공격에 아무런 대비를 하지 않고 있었구요. 648년에 맺은 약속은 버티고 버티다 659년까지 지켜지지 않았습니다. 김춘추가 근심에 젖을 수밖에 없었죠. 당에 올인한 건 성공할 것이다, 될 것이다, 될 것이다, 그렇게 버티고 버텼습니다. 하지만 아직도 되지 않았죠. 이러다 당이 포기한다면 신라는 끈 떨어진 신세가 될 것이었으니까요. 10월, 그렇게 근심하고 있던 김춘추의 앞에 장준과 파랑이라는 죽은 신하들이 나타납니다. 거기서 스포일러를 말해주고 갔고, 그는 기뻐하며 그 가족들에게 큰 상을 내렸다 합니다. 백제의 멸망에는 참 이런 귀신 얘기들이 많이 나오는군요 (...) 김춘추 정도의 사람이 이쯤이면 당도 움직일 것이다고 분석 내지 예측을 못 했을 리는 없고, 저들을 띄울 만한 어떤 이유가 있었겠죠. 그렇게 660년이 왔습니다. 김춘추에겐 그 어느 때보다 기쁠 해였고, 의자왕에겐 지옥이 될 해였죠. -------------------------------------------------------- 김춘추의 시작은 백제에 대한 복수, 혹은 백제 점령이었습니다. 하지만 나당동맹을 맺으면서 그 범위를 고구려까지 넓혔죠. 이에 대한 반론이 많습니다. 처음부터 백제 병합만을 목표로 했다는 것이죠. 삼국통일 자체를 부정할수록 이걸 밀구요. 태종과 약속 받은 평양 이남 백제 땅, 이걸 평양 이남[의]로 해석합니다. 반면 삼국통일을 긍정하는 쪽에선 평양 이남[과]로 해석하죠. 일단 삼국이 진짜 서로에게 동질성을 느꼈느냐도 걸립니다. 고구려-백제까진 명분이 있지만, 신라는 다른 계열이었으니까요. 하지만 이 시기, 6세기 전후부터 중국에서 삼국을 삼한으로 하나로 묶은 건 사실입니다. 신라가 내세운 일통삼한부터 당에 항복한 고구려인들의 묘지명을 보면 삼국인들도 그렇게 느꼈나 보구요. 이런 걸 보면 일통삼한을 김춘추가 꿈꿨을 게 이상하진 않습니다. 김유신 열전에선 김유신이 어릴 때부터 그런 큰 꿈을 꿨다고 하죠 (...) 열전이라 믿긴 어렵지만, 서로를 삼한이라는, 하나의 묶음으로 분류한 이상 이걸 하나로 하자는 건 당시 남자의 로망, 제왕의 로망으로 부족함이 없죠. 신라는 당에게 절대적으로 매달리고 정말 온 국력을 기울여 당의 전쟁을 도왔습니다. 하지만 당이 배신을 때리자 놀라거나 포기하기는커녕 정말 치밀하고 치밀하게 전쟁을 준비합니다. 미리 당의 배신을 생각해두지 않았다면, 그 당과도 맞설 생각을 하지 않았다면 그럴 수 없었겠죠. 이 부분은 다 문무왕이 한 거지만, 태종 무열왕과 문무왕의 전략을 나눠서 구분하기는 힘들 겁니다. 그 둘과 함께 활동한 김유신의 존재를 생각하면 더욱이죠. 당의 힘을 빌리고 만주의 드넓은 땅을 포기한, 불완전한 통일임은 부정할 수 없습니다. 하지만 그렇게 해서 얻은 게 신라에게 어쩌다가 떨어진 것, 김춘추 등이 요행만 바란 것은 아닙니다. 굴복할 땐 확실히 굴복하고, 자신의 이용가치를 확실히 보여주고, 내외적으로 통할 확실한 명분을 만들었고, 그 당의 배신을 예측하고 반격을 철저히 계획해서 이겨낸 거죠. 그렇게 자신이 먹을 수 있는 부분까지를 먹었구요. 남이 와서 적을 물리쳐 준다... 정말 큰 행운이 필요한 일입니다. 하지만 그 행운을 잡는 건 결국 사람의 능력이죠. * 수박이두통에게보린님에 의해서 티타임 게시판으로부터 게시물 복사되었습니다 (2017-08-14 08:13) * 관리사유 : 추천게시판으로 복사합니다.
