암탉이 울면 집안이 망한다 했습니다. 서양사까지 연결시키는 건 무리고, 동양사에서 나온 여군주들을 보면 뭐 그럴 법도 합니다 (...) 나라를 망하게/망할 수준으로 했거나, 그냥 허수아비였거나, 성깔이 지독해서 권력을 마음대로 휘두르고 신하들을 숙청하고 뭐 그랬죠. 근데 그럴 수밖에 없어요. 군주를 남자가 계승해야 되는 사회에서 여자가 군주가 된다는 건 왕위계승 상황이 흔들릴 수밖에 없는 상황이라는 겁니다. 이미 비정상적인 상황이라는 얘기죠. 이러니 권신에게 이용당하는 허수아비가 되거나 실권이 있어도 어려운 상황을 헤쳐나가야 됩니다. 정말 자신의 능력으로 (물론 기본적으로 씨는 최고급이어야 하지만) 했다면? 남존여비의 사회에서 그런 뜻을 품겠다는 것만으로도 충분히 독하다는 얘기고, 정상적인 방법으로는 하기 힘들 것이며, (그게 옳든 그르든) 당연히 숙청해야 될 반대파가 많을 겁니다. 통치할 때 난이도가 높은 건 마찬가지구요. 이후 당연히 남자가 통치를 하는 [안정적인] 시대가 되면 이런 여군주들을 까는 게 당연하게 되죠. 여자라는 명분으로 뭐든 갖다붙일 수 있거든요. 여기에 정말 잘못했던 것까지 더하면 되구요. 한국사 최초의 여군주는 선덕여왕입니다. 그래서 많이도 띄우죠. 하지만 현대에 알려진 것과 달리 그녀에 대한 평가는 그리 좋지 않습니다. ----------------------------------------------- 삼국의 중앙집권은 제도로는 율령, 사상으로는 불교로 이루어졌습니다. 왕이 곧 부처니 왕에게 충성하라, 왕즉불 사상이 유행했죠. 신라는 법흥왕부터 진덕여왕까지 불교식 왕호를 썼고, 승려였던 일연은 이걸 중시해서 이 전을 상고, 이 시기를 중고, 이후를 하고로 했습니다. 왕호만이 아니었죠. 진흥왕은 스스로를 전륜성왕이라 칭했습니다. 석가모니가 부처가 되지 않고 왕위를 이었다면 전륜성왕이 됐을 것이다에서 나온 왕으로 백제의 성왕, 발해의 문왕도 자칭할 정도로 유행했습니다. 전륜성왕에겐 네 등급이 있다 합니다. 금륜 은륜 동륜 철륜이죠. 진흥왕은 첫째에겐 동륜이라는 이름을, 둘째에겐 사륜(혹은 금륜)을 줍니다. 왜 동생이 금륜이냐 해서 금륜 쪽은 잘못된 거고 (유사에선 사륜밖에 안 나오기도 하고) 사륜을 철륜에 연결시키기도 합니다. 그리고 왜 금은이 없이 동부터 가냐 해서 일찍 죽은 아들 둘이 더 있었던 게 아니냐 하기도 하구요. 법흥왕을 금륜, 진흥왕을 은륜에 대응시키기도 하죠. 화랑세기 필사본에선 여동생 은륜공주가 등장하지만 여자한테 이 이름을 줬을까 하는 건 둘째치고 필사본은 위서로 기울고 있으니. 동륜태자는 일찍 죽었고, 아들이 셋이 있었지만 어려서 그런지 둘째 사륜이 왕위를 이으니 진지왕입니다. 하지만 4년만에 죽었죠. 삼국유사에서는 도화녀와 비형랑 설화를 통해 진지왕이 음탕해서 폐위되었다고 쓰고 있습니다. 일단 기록돼 있으니 이에 따르고 있지만 근거는 유사 뿐이고 사기에는 딱히 그런 모습이 보이지가 않죠. 이래서 참 다양한 가설들이 나옵니다. 정치 싸움 쪽으로 말이죠. http://comic.mt.co.kr/view/20743/desc/2 설화는 만화로 재밌게 봅시다 ( '-') 진지왕의 뒤를 이은 건 동륜의 첫째아들 진평왕이었습니다. 사륜에게 잠시 갔던 왕좌가 동륜의 아들에게 돌아온 것이죠. 그렇다고 십대 초반의 애가 뭘 하긴 힘들었을 것이고, 동륜태자계열의 파벌 vs 진지왕의 파벌로 보는 겁니다. 진흥왕이 죽었을 땐 후자가 승리했고, 4년만에 반격을 당했다는 것이죠. 그렇다고 피로 피를 씻는 싸움까진 아니다 싶은 게 진평왕은 진지왕의 아들 김용수(혹은 용춘)을 중용했단 말이죠. 비형랑 설화를 여기에 대입하기도 합니다. 도깨비들 무리는 진지왕의 파벌이고 진평왕은 그걸 이끌던 용수를 중용한 것이고, 용수도 비형랑처럼 능력 있고 충성을 다 했다는 것으로요. 이후 용수를 시작으로 진지왕의 후손들이 잘 나간 걸 보면 저런 설화를 덮을 수도 있었을 건데 그대로 남은 걸 보면 음탕하긴 했던 건가 싶긴 한데 그렇다고 저거 말고는 나오는 게 또 없기도 하니 ( '-')a 재밌지만 머리 아픈, 답이 안 나올 문제죠 뭐. +) 김용수나 김용춘이냐, 아예 다른 사람이냐... 70년대부터 정설은 동일 인물이란 것입니다. 용수 쪽이 맞는 걸로 보이구요. 화랑세기 필사본을 둘을 다른 사람으로 쓰고 있고 위서론의 주요 근거 중 하나입니다. 자 이렇게 왕위에 오른 진평왕, 그의 이름은 백정이었습니다. 석가모니의 아버지 이름이었죠. 왕비는 마야부인, 석가모니의 어머니 이름이었죠. 이렇게 그 가족의 이름을 다 석가모니의 가족에서 따 와서 짓습니다. 자, 이제 석가모니가 될 아들만 태어나면 됐는데... 무려 54년의 재위기간, 70 직전까지 간 나이에도 태어나지 않았죠. 후비로 승만부인을 들였는데도 안 됐습니다. 성골 남자가 없어졌다고 하니 남동생들도 일찍 죽었나 봅니다. 에고... 결국 딸이라도 푸시해 줘야죠. 이걸 반대로 보기도 합니다. 여자가 왕위를 잇는 것에 대한 반응이야 뻔했죠. 그걸 덮을 정도로 신성하게 만들어야 했습니다. 즉, 아들 낳기를 포기하고 딸 승만에게 왕위를 잇게 하기 위해 저렇게 했다는 것이죠. 이건 골품제에도 연결됩니다. 신분제야 어느 나라든 있었지만, 왕족과 귀족은 물론 같은 왕족 내에서도 오를 수 없는 벽이 오랜 기간 유지되는 건 불가능합니다. 진흥왕의 직계인 김용수도 진골이었습니다. 진지왕이 폐위돼서 그렇다, 진골과 결혼해서 그렇다 가설이 있지만 어느 쪽이든 기준이 빡빡해도 너무 빡빡하죠. 이걸 박혁거세부터 28대 동안 계속해 왔다? 중앙집권 전의 왕족은 가장 힘이 센 귀족이었는데 말이죠. 중앙집권을 강화하고 영토를 넓히면서 골품제의 형태가 갖춰졌을 것이고, 성골과 진골 수준까지 간 건 꽤나 후대로 봅니다. 법흥왕부터 시작해서 다양한 학설들이 있고 현재 통설이라 할 건 바로 이 때입니다. 이기동 교수의 학설이죠. 진평왕이 아버지 동륜태자를 띄우고 그 후손인 자신들을 성골로 띄웠다는 거죠. 그렇게 띄웠는데 자기도 동생들도 아들을 낳지 못 했다... 혹은 딸에게 왕위를 주기 위해 성스러운 어느 쪽이든 성골은 그렇게 오래 갈 수 없는 운명이었습니다. --------------------------------------------------------------------- "나라는 여인을 임금으로 삼았기에 이웃나라에게 업신여김을 당하고, 주인이 없어지면 도둑이 들끓는 것처럼 해마다 편안할 때가 없다." - 당태종 "하늘의 이치로 말하면 양은 굳세고 음은 부드러우며, 사람의 경우로 말하자면 남자는 존귀하고 여자는 비천한 것이니 어찌 늙은 할멈이 규방에서 나와 국가의 정사를 처리할 수 있겠는가? 신라는 여인을 세워 왕위에 오르게 하였으니, 진실로 어지러운 세상에서나 있을 일이다. 나라가 망하지 않은 것이 다행이었다. 『서경』에 말하기를 “암탉이 새벽을 알린다.”고 하였고, 『역경』에서는 “암퇘지가 껑충껑충 뛰려 한다.”고 하였으니, 어찌 경계할 일이 아니겠는가." - 삼국사기 사관 논 "과인은 불행하게도 아들이 없이 딸만 두었다. 우리나라 옛 일에 선덕과 진덕 두 여왕이 있었지만, 이는 암탉이 새벽을 알리는 것과 가까운 일이라 본받을 수는 없다." - 헌안왕이 사위 김응렴(경문왕)에게 왕위를 물려주며 엄... (...) 그렇게 해도 즉위는 순탄치 않았던 모양입니다. 진평왕이 죽기 8개월 전, 아찬 둘이 일으킨 반란을 선덕여왕의 즉위와 연결시키기도 하고, 당태종은 즉위하고 4년 후에야 그녀를 책봉해 줍니다. 모란꽃 설화과 왕이 된 후라면 이것과 연결시킬 수 있습니다. 책봉해주는 대신에 여자라고 깐 거죠. 유사에서는 이걸 그녀의 신통력으로 띄워주지만 그보다 중요한 건 여왕이라 무시당했다는 겁니다. +) 모란꽃 설화의 시기는 둘로 나뉩니다. 삼국사기에서는 진평왕 때, 삼국유사에는 왕이 된 후죠. "지금 그대 나라는 여자가 왕위에 있으니 덕은 있지만 위엄이 없구려. 그래서 이웃나라가 침략을 꾀하고 있는 것이오. 그대는 빨리 돌아가야만 하오." - 자장의 황룡사 9층탑 설화 그녀에 대한 많은 설화는 이걸 이겨내기 위한, 통치의 정당성을 만들기 위한 것일 겁니다. 모두 그녀가 얼마나 똑똑한지, 백성들에게 인기가 얼마나 많았는지를 말해줍니다. 여기에 영묘사에 첨성대, 황룡사 9층탑을 지었죠. 9층탑의 건설 이유가 위에서 보듯 여왕이라 업신여겨 침략을 받으니 그걸 이겨내기 위함이라 합니다. 중국에서 귀국한 자장은 이런 걸 도우면서 최초로 모든 승려들을 관리하는 대국통의 자리에 오르죠. 그녀가 잘 했느냐 못 했느냐를 떠나서, 그녀에게 실권이 진짜 있었을까부터가 의문이 듭니다. 즉위하고는 대신 을제에게 국정을 맡겼거든요. 즉위했을 때 나이는 많으면 50대로 추측되는데 말이죠. 즉위 초에는 백성들을 구제하고 사면령을 내리는, 민생을 생각하는 정책이 보입니다. 건축이죠. 분황사, 영묘사, 황룡사 9층목탑, 첨성대 같은 것들이요. 고구려 백제와의 싸움에선 개구리 우는 소리로 백제군의 침입을 예상하는 모습도 있긴 하지만 (이것부터가 백제군이 가까이 접근했다는 얘기고) 전투는 장수들에게 일임하고 있습니다. 이런 점들로 봐서 국방과 내정은 능력 있는 신하들에게 맡기고 자신은 사상적인 구심점과 선덕, 덕으로 다스리는 자애로운 군왕의 모습을 보여주는 것으로 나누기도 합니다. 긍정적으로 본다면 이렇고 부정적으로 보면 실권은 귀족들에게 있고 자기는 자신과 왕실의 신성시에만 힘쓰는 것이 되죠. 진짜 그럴지, 나눴다면 어느 정도로 나눴을지=왕의 실권이 얼마나 됐을지에 대한 확실한 근거 역시 없습니다. 신하들에게 맡긴다는 부분만 해도 그렇죠. 선덕여왕 때 중용된 김유신과 김춘추는 결국 큰 일을 해냅니다. 이들도 진평왕 때부터 기용된 이들이고, 진평왕의 유산을 그대로 이은 건지, 그녀 자신의 선택으로 그들을 중용한 건지, 실권이 그녀에게 없었고 그들이 귀족 세력의 중심으로 실권을 장악해 간 건지... 이걸 확실히 알 수 있는 부분이 없습니다. 일단 그녀의 선택이 맞지 않겠냐 싶습니다만. 그리고... 그녀가 어떤 왕이었든 전쟁 중일 때, 그것도 지고 있을 때 좋은 평가를 받을 수 있을 리가 없습니다. 그녀의 재위 11년, 백제가 무섭게 공세를 취하면서 더 심해질 수밖에요. 순식간에 성 40개를 잃었고, 이어 대야성까지 잃었습니다. 이겨내지 못하면 명군이라 해도 순식간에 암군이 될 밖에요. 영묘사 등 선덕여왕의 업적으로 불리는 건 후대로 가면 그녀의 실정의 근거가 됐습니다. 전쟁이 한창인데 그런 대형 토목공사를 벌여서 돈을 날렸다고 말이죠. 유학자들에겐 그게 다 불교 관련인 것도 큰 문제였을 거구요. 그럴만한 근거도 있습니다. 9층탑을 세운 건 643년, 백제에게 40성과 대야성을 잃은 다음 해입니다. 그런데 백제에 비단과 보물을 줘서 아비지라는 장인을 불러서 만들었다 합니다. 이해가 가지 않는 일이죠. 계속 밀리고 있건만 그 적국에 재물을 주면서 큰 탑을 쌓고 하늘에 빌기만 하고 있습니다. 하필 643년이라서 그렇지, 그 전이라 해도 이해가 안 가는 일이죠. +) 탑 쌓는 걸 지휘한 사람이 김용수입니다 웬만한 왕이라도 불만이 생길 상황입니다. 다른 생각이 들 수 있는 상황이죠. 그런데 즉위할 때부터 문제됐던 중요한 결격사유가 있습니다. 여자잖아요. 여자라서 힘이 없어서 이렇게 된 겁니다. 당에 구원을 청하자 당에서도 여자라고 깝니다. 여자... 여자... 네 여자가 왕이 된 게 문제입니다. 그녀의 방식이 어느 것이었든 나라가 위급할 때는 큰 권력과 능동적인 모습을 보여줄 왕이 필요했습니다. 그녀의 능력과 정책을 긍정적으로 생각하더라도, 아쉽지만 그녀가 편히 통치를 할 수 있을 때가 아니었습니다. 645년, 당과의 동맹에 올인했고 당은 고구려를 칩니다. 신라는 백제를 걱정하면서도 고구려를 공격했죠. 하지만 당은 패했고, 백제의 뒷치기로 다시 일곱 성을 잃습니다. 반란 일어나기 딱 좋을 때죠. "여왕은 나라를 잘 다스릴 수 없다." 비담은 관등으로 두번째인 이찬으로 646년 11월에 최고 관직인 상대등에 오릅니다. 하지만 불과 2개월만에 염종과 난을 일으키죠. 여왕은 그 말을 듣고 두려워 했고, 급히 김유신을 불러 토벌하게 합니다. 하지만 정작 그 왕이 그 달 8일에 죽었죠. 반란군에 죽은 걸로 보기도 하고, 원래 중병을 앓고 있어 비담이 그 틈을 타 난을 일으킨 것으로 보기도 합니다. 이 비담이 누구인지, 왜 난을 일으킨 건지 역시 자세한 말이 없습니다. 그래서 정말 온갖 추측들이 나오죠. 역시 귀족들의 다툼이라는 측면에서요. 우선 비담이 상대등이라는 직위에 오르고도 왜 반란을 일으켰는지가 문젭니다. 선덕여왕과는 어떤 관계인지, 그를 토벌한 김유신(+김춘추)과는 어떤 관계인지 말이죠. 정말 다양한 추측과 설정이 나올 수밖에 없습니다. 드라마에서는 연인 관계로 다뤘다면서요 (...) 일단 김유신, 김춘추 파벌을 근왕파로 보고, 비담은 귀족세력으로 봅니다. 상대등은 귀족들의 수장으로 왕권과 대립할 수밖에 없었죠. (상대등에 맞서 왕권 강화를 위해 키운 게 시중이죠) 비담은 그런 중앙 귀족들의 대표고, 중앙집권 과정에서 그 반대인 자들, 지방세력인 김유신이나 몰락한 세력인 김춘추를 키웠다는 겁니다. 그 둘이 대립했고, 신라와 선덕여왕의 상황이 최악인 상황에 들고 일어났다는 거죠. 이런 기존 귀족vs근왕파 신흥 귀족들의 대립이 그럴듯 하긴 하지만 확실하다 할 근거는 없죠. 같은 편이었다가 비담이 뒤통수 친 걸 수도 있고, 같은 편이었는데 소외되었을 수도 있는 거니까요. 저 여자라는 게 선덕이 아닌 진덕을 뜻하는 것일 수도 있습니다. 여왕은 죽을 때가 됐고 성골 남자는 여전히 없었기에 다음을 잇는 건 김국반의 딸 승만이 이을 것이었습니다. 여기에 반대했다는 것이죠. 진심으로 더 이상 여왕은 안 된다 생각했을 수도 있고, 그 스스로가 왕위에 오를 거였다면 김춘추급의 계승순위를 가진 자가 아닐까 싶습니다. 이 쪽도 그럴 듯 하죠. +) 저 김국반은 동륜의 셋째입니다. 삼국유사에는 선덕여왕의 남편(!)을 음갈문왕이라고 적고 있습니다. (갈문왕은 조선의 대원군처럼 쓰거나 왕의 장인, 동생 등에게 주던 직위였습니다) 창녕조씨의 족보에 시조 조계룡이 선덕여왕의 남편이라 돼 있습니다. 여기선 무려 5남 2녀를 낳았다네요 (...) 경주 김씨 김인평 설도 있는데 조씨를 하사받은 것으로 조계룡=김인평이라 보기도 합니다. 여기에 다른 설도 있는데, 저 음飮자를 반飯자의 오기로 보고 반갈문왕, 즉 김국반으로 보는 설입니다. 삼촌과 결혼했다는 거죠. 성골을 위해 근친혼이야 뭐 ( '-') 하지만 부인이 따로 있고 그 아래서 진덕여왕을 봤으니... 아무튼 선덕여왕이 처음부터 왕이 될 운명은 아니었을 테니 결혼은 했을 테고, 자식 없이 남편이 먼저 죽은 게 아닐까 하네요. 이렇게 선덕여왕은 세상을 뜹니다. 권력에 대한 그녀의 욕심이 얼마나 있었을지 알 순 없지만, 정말 힘들고 힘든 삶이었음을 충분히 짐작할 수 있을 겁니다. 외적의 침입은 계속되고, 신하고 당이고 자기를 여자라 무시하고... 최초의 여왕이란 점과 긍정적인 설화들로 많이 띄워주는 왕이지만, 그 이면에 있는 그림자는 큽니다. 그래도 어떻게 어떻게든 버텨냈고, 김유신과 김춘추를 선택한 건 (자신의 의지가 얼마나 있었든) 최고의 선택이었습니다. 그녀에 대한 긍정적인 설화가 잔뜩 남아 있는 이상, 그녀가 어느 정도든 잘난 사람이었다는 걸 부정하긴 힘들 겁니다. 물론 이것조차도 자신들을 키워줬기에 김춘추-김유신 쪽에서 남겨준 것일 수도 있겠지만요. 이제 다시 여왕이 왕위에 오릅니다. 진덕여왕이었죠. 그녀의 시대에 신라는 또 다른 발전을 합니다. 진흥왕 때 설치했던 품주가 집사부로 강화돼 행정을 총괄하게 되었죠. 높은 관리들은 아홀(사극에서 손에 들고 있는 긴 막대기예요)을 가지게 했고, 새해에 왕에게 하례를 하는 의식도 시작됩니다. 김춘추가 당에 갔다 온 후 중국의 여러 제도를 받아들이면서 한 것이죠. 이렇게 신라는 중앙집권의 길로 더 나아가게 됩니다. 이름이나 방식만 약간 바뀌지 고려 조선으로 이어지기도 했구요. 하지만 이게 어디 여왕을 위한 것이겠습니까. 그녀는 마지막 성골이었습니다. 그 뒤를 이을 건 그래도 혈통으로 성골과 가장 가까운 이, 그리고 가장 큰 권력을 쥔 귀족이었습니다. 김춘추는 그 두개를 모두 가진 자였죠. 그가 진덕여왕 때 닦아 놓은 중앙집권은 그의 집권 후에도 큰 힘이 되었죠. 첫 여왕이고 온갖 긍정적인 설화를 가진 선덕여왕, 안 그래도 막장으로 가던 나라를 정말 최악으로 만들어버린 진성여왕에 밀려서 진덕여왕은 존재감이 떨어집니다. 하지만 의외로 셋 중 역사에 가장 큰 영향을 미쳤다 할 게 바로 진덕여왕의 재위기간 동안 이루어졌죠. 그녀가 한 건 정말 아닌 것 같습니다만 ( '-') 뭐 그녀의 재위기간 동안에도 신라는 계속 밀리고 있었고 당나라에 더욱 비비게 됩니다. 치당태평송, 정말 눈 뜨고 보기 어려운 굴욕적인 칭송도 했죠. https://namu.wiki/w/%EC%A7%84%EB%8D%95%EC%97%AC%EC%99%95#toc 뭐 그렇다고 마음까지 준 건 아니었지만요. 654년, 진덕여왕도 재위 8년만에 죽습니다. 이제 성골은 없었고 진골 중에서 덕망 있는 이가 해야 했습니다. 첫번째 후보는 알천이었습니다. 아마 진평왕 때부터 큰 활약을 했을 명장으로 추측됩니다. 선덕여왕 때 신라군의 에이스로 등장하지만, 의자왕 즉위 후 고구려와 백제의 맹공 속에 김유신에게 밀려납니다. 그래도 상당히 좋은 능력과 혈통, 세력을 갖췄는지 그가 처음으로 후보가 되었죠. 하지만 나이가 너무 많고 덕이 없다며 김춘추를 내세웁니다. 이런 패턴을 보면 애초에 서로간에 거래가 돼 있었지 싶습니다. 김춘추는 세 번이나 사양하는 정말 흔한 패턴을 보여준 후 왕위에 오릅니다. 진흥왕의 둘째에게 갔던 왕좌는 진평왕 때 첫째 동륜에게로 돌아왔고 두 여왕을 낳았습니다. 이제 다시 진지왕의 손자, 김용수의 아들 김춘추에게 왕좌가 돌아왔죠. 후의 신라인들은 당나라의 딴지에도 불구하고 그에게 태종이라는 크나큰 묘호를 바치죠. 그의 위치가 어느 정도인지 알 수 있는 부분입니다. 이렇게 김춘추, 그리고 그의 동반자 김유신의 시대가 본격적으로 시작됩니다. ------------------------------------------------------------ 김춘추 얘기를 하려고 했는데 여왕들 얘기만 했네요.
