"내가 들으니 안시성은 성이 험하고 병사가 강하며, 그 성주의 재주와 용맹은 막리지의 난에도 성을 지키고 항복하지 않을 정도이다. 막리지가 공격하였으나 그를 굴복시킬 수 없었기 때문에 성을 그에게 주었다고 한다." 안시성의 성주는 을지문덕보다 더 알려진 게 없습니다. 당태종의 저 말이 성을 잘 지켰다는 것 외에 유일한 정보라고 생각해도 될 겁니다. 그의 이름부터가 알려지지 않았죠. 김부식도 그걸 참 안타까워했구요. 양만춘이라는 이름이 나오는 건 임진왜란 이후죠. 출처는 [태종 동정기], [당서연의] 등 중국의 책들입니다. 하지만 연의는 소설일 것이고, 중국에서 그 진짜 이름을 알고 있었던 건지, 양만춘으로 [설정]한 건지 알 수 없죠. 설정이겠죠? 우리도 이름이 없으면 안 되니 양만춘이라는 이름을 계속 쓰고 있으니까요. 이렇게 이름도 안 알려졌지만, 당태종이라는 동아시아 역사에서 손 꼽히는 명군을 홀로 막아낸 엄청난 업적만큼은 지금까지도 길이 전해지고 있죠. 저 위의 태종의 말이 맞다면 당시 꽤나 잘 알려진 인물이긴 했을 겁니다. 연개소문의 쿠테타에 반대해서 공격까지 받았지만 잘 막아내서 인정받은 인물로 말이죠. 그래서 태종은 안시성의 방어가 강할 테니 더 남쪽의 건안성을 공격하는 게 어떻냐고 합니다. 하지만 이세적은 후방이 걱정되니 안시성을 먼저 깨뜨려야 한다고 주장했고, 태종은 그 말을 들어줍니다. 안시성주의 능력은 전투가 시작될 때부터 볼 수 있습니다. 황제가 직접 온 걸 보자 북을 요란하게 치고 마구 욕을 해 댔다고 합니다. 이 정도로 성 내를 확실히 장악하고 있었고, 잘 싸울 자신도 있었다는 거죠. 그 자신감은 헛된 게 아니었습니다. 당군의 공격이 계속됐지만, 안시성은 굳건히 버텼죠. 이대로 시간이 지난다면 지금까지의 승리도 소용 없어지는 거였죠. 당군 내에서도 다른 방안이 나옵니다. 앞서 항복한 고연수, 고혜진이 압록강의 오골성, 더 나아가 평양으로의 직공을 주장합니다. 이도종 역시 수군을 이용해 압록강으로 갈 것을 주장했죠. 하지만 장손무기가 반대합니다. 아직 신성, 건안성 등에 고구려군 10만여가 있는데 요행을 노리면 안 된다면서 말이죠. 태종도 그의 손을 들어주었죠. 무엇보다 수나라의 전례가 있으니까요. 결국 답은 계속 안시성을 공격한다였습니다. +) 이들이야 고구려가 이대로 멸망하겠다 싶었을 텐데 안시성에서 막아내 버렸으니... 고연수는 돌아가는 길에 죄책감에 병이 들어 죽습니다. 고혜진은 당에서 벼슬을 하며 살았구요. 하지만 계속 공격해도 안 됐죠. 고구려군의 야습을 예측해서 막아내기도 했는데, 뭔가 지는 얘기만 하니까 작은 승리라도 넣어놓은 느낌입니다. 결국 당군은 새로운 카드를 꺼내드니, 토산을 쌓는 거였습니다. 밤낮으로 50여만명이나 동원했음에도 60여일이나 걸렸죠. 고구려군의 방해를 막기 위해 공격은 계속됐구요. 하루에도 6~7번씩 싸웠지만 다 막혔고, 온갖 공성기로 성 내의 방어물들을 부쉈지만 얼마 안 가 복구했죠. 토산을 성보다 더 높이 쌓자 성 안에서도 성벽을 더 높게 보강합니다. 그럼에도 토산은 갈수록 높아져서 성을 내려다보고 공격할 수 있었다고 합니다. +) 이 때 동원된 50만명 때문에 이글루스에서 엄청난 키배가 벌어졌었죠. 당군의 규모와도 연결되는 문제니까요. 대체적인 결론은 연인원(중복 생각 않고 기간 동안 동원된 인원을 모두 더한 것)이라는 거였구요. 이렇게 열심히 쌓았건만 시간이 지나면서 일부가 무너져 버립니다. 이 여파로 성벽도 일부 무너졌는데, 고구려군은 과감하게 이 틈을 노려 역습합니다. 무너진 곳으로 나와서 토산을 점령해버린 것이죠. 오히려 당군을 위에서 공격할 장소가 하나 더 생겨버린 겁니다. 자기들이 만들어 준 거죠. (...) 토산을 관리하던 자는 이도종 휘하의 부복애였는데, 마침 그 때 사적인 이유로 거기 없었다고 합니다. 태종은 분노해서 그의 목을 베었고, 다시 성 공격을 했지만 여전히 답이 없었습니다. 이러니 책임자였던 이도종이 직접 죄를 청했죠. 하지만 조카이기도 했고, 공도 여럿 세웠는지라 용서해줬죠. 하지만 더 이상 답이 없다는 걸 깨닫기도 했을 겁니다. 어느새 9월, 날이 추워지고 있었죠. 당군이 안시성으로 향한 건 6월 말부터 7월이었습니다. 다른 성들도 공격했고 가운데 주필산 전투도 있었으니 그 기간 동안 온 힘을 다 쏟은 건 아니겠죠. 그래도 무려 3개월이나 되는 기간을 막아낸 것이었습니다. 태종의 의지를 성 하나로 꺾은 것이죠. 여기에 전쟁을 포기해야 할 이유가 하나 더 생깁니다. 몽골 쪽의 국가 설연타 때문이었죠. 당과 동서돌궐의 대립과 이이제이 속에서 성장한 국가였습니다. 당군이 한 차례 토벌하기도 했고 역시 이이제이로 분열을 시도하기도 했었죠. 태종은 고구려를 치기 전에 그 사실을 알리며 공격할 테면 공격하라고 협박헀고, 당시 칸인 진주비가가한은 깨갱합니다. 연개소문도 이런 대립을 잘 알아서 당이 쳐들어오자 손을 잡으려 했지만 거부했죠. 그런데 그가 9월에 갑자기 죽어버립니다. 그가 죽고 아들 둘이 나라를 나눠 다스렸는데, 남쪽을 맡은 발작(...)은 순식간에 형을 죽이고 나라를 통합했고, 당을 공격했죠. 이러니 별 수 없었습니다. 패배를 인정하고 돌아갈 수밖에요. "만일 위징이 있었다면 나에게 이번 원정을 못하게 하였으리라." 위징이야 명신으로 유명하죠. 적벽 후의 조조를 떠올리게 만드는 말이네요. 정작 전쟁 시작하기 전에는 저번에 위징이 (이 땐 대상이 설연타였지만) 전쟁을 막은 건 잘못된 거였다고 했지만요 (...) 안시성주는 성 위에서 돌아가는 태종에게 절을 하면서 예를 갖추었고, 태종은 그의 공과 능력을 칭찬하며 비단 100필을 주었다 합니다. 뭐 훈훈하군요. 태종이 화살로 눈을 잃었다는 야사도 있긴 하지만요. 하지만 그냥 돌아가진 않았습니다. 점령한 성의 백성들과 항복한 무리들도 이끌고 돌아가니 그 수가 기록에 따라 최소 7만에서 10만에 이릅니다. 그만큼의 백성을 뺏긴 것이고, 복구도 더 힘들게 만든 것이죠. 점령당하거나 항복한 고구려의 성이 10개, 전사자가 4만 정도라 하니 고구려가 입은 피해를 짐작할 수 있죠. 안시성이 얼마나 큰 역할을 했는지 알 수 있는 부분입니다. 당군의 피해도 적지 않아서 전투로 수천명이 죽었고 병 등으로 죽은 이가 수만이었다고 합니다. 아예 십만 명 중 수천명만 남았다는 기록도 있구요. 기록마다 다르고 과장이 얼마나 들어있을지는 알 수 없지만요. 최소한 고구려를 쉽게 칠 수 없다는 건 확실히 알 수 있는 피해였겠죠. 이렇게 1차 여당전쟁은 끝이 납니다. ------------------------------------------------------------- 함락되거나 항복한 성이 10개, 여수전쟁 때와는 참 다른 모습입니다. 여러가지 이유가 있을 겁니다. 우선 시작부터 있었던 이세적의 우회기동이 있죠. 요동성으로 바로 가는 길은 늪이 많아서 강을 건너기가 힘들었고, 고구려군이 그걸 보고 방비하는 것도 쉬웠습니다. 이세적은 이걸 위해 북쪽으로 몰래 강을 건넜고, 고구려군이 미처 깨닫기 전에 진격해 버렸습니다. 덕분에 태종의 본대는 기습당할 걱정 없이 강을 건널 수 있었죠. 이런 식으로 당군이 요동 방어선에 대한 작전을 잘 짠 게 컸겠죠. 당을 세우고 주변 나라들을 제압하면서 쌓은 경험들도 컸을 거구요. 거기다 고구려군이 야전에서 계속 당했고, 요동성이라는 큰 성이 무너지면서 다른 성들까지 무너지는 모습도 나왔죠. 그 외에도 추측만 할 수 있는 고구려 내부의 사정도 영향이 있을 겁니다. 애초부터 양국의 체격은 달랐고, 외교로 봐도 고구려를 도울 수 있는 유목민족들은 다 당에 당하거나 고개 숙이고 있었습니다. 그나마 해법이 될 지 모르는 신라와의 화친은 고구려에서 거부했죠. 물론 그러고도 고구려에선 열심히 했고, 칸이 바뀌는 큰 행운이 있긴 했어도 설연타가 당을 공격한 것도 그 성과였습니다. 하지만 그 정도였죠. 그럼에도 고구려는 잘 싸웠고, 요동 방어선은 답이 없다는 걸 잘 보여줬습니다. 요동성을 비롯한 중심부는 함락되었지만, 결국 안시성을 넘지 못 하면서 더 이상 확대되지 않았습니다. 안시성 쪽이 주공이라서 그렇지 버틴 성은 안시성뿐만이 아닙니다. 북쪽의 신성과 요하 하류의 건안성은 야전에서 깨졌다고 나오지만 함락당했다고는 나오지 않습니다. 성이 열 개나 넘어가긴 했지만, 달리 말 하면 반 년 동안 성 열 개를 점령했을 뿐이고, 압록강으로 평양으로 가는 길을 뚫지 못 한 겁니다. 괜히 고구려의 자존심이 아닌 거죠. 결국 태종은 방침을 바꿔야 했습니다. 요동 방어선은 광개토대왕 때부터 공들여 만들었습니다. 수나라와의 전쟁과 태종의 전쟁 위협 속에 고구려는 이 방어선을 강화했죠. 631년부터 16년이나 걸린 천리장성입니다. 헌데 이 천리장성은 그 정체를 확실히 알 수가 없습니다. 만리장성이나 고려의 천리장성처럼 장성長城의 흔적을 찾을 수 없거든요. 현재 천리장성으로 추측되는 건 북쪽 끝이라 할 부여성부터 내려오는 노변강 유적입니다. 흙으로 쌓은 토성의 형태인데, 일단 이게 천리장성의 흔적이라는 게 정설로 굳어지고 있긴 합니다. 하지만 역시 부족하죠. 이것부터가 긴 성벽이긴 했을까 하는 의심이 있고, 아래로 바다까지 이르렀다는 기록과 달리 남쪽에는 제대로 나오는 게 없거든요. 지금까지 안 나왔는데 앞으로도 나올 리도 없구요. 그래서 말이 장성이지 성과 성을 잇는 벽을 쌓은 것 정도로 추측되고 있죠. 여기서 더 나아가서 장성 자체가 없었고, 고구려가 쌓은 수많은 성들을 장성이라고 일컬은 걸로 보는 주장이 나옵니다. 이 둘이 계속 대립하고 있죠. 어느 쪽이든 방어의 중심은 장성 그 자체가 아니라 많이도 쌓은 성들의 연계라는 데에는 동의합니다. 애초에 성벽이 아무리 높아도 길기만 한 건 전쟁 자체에는 큰 도움이 안 되니까요. 우리 역사의 국가들은 많은 성들을 세워서 서로 연계하는 식으로 적들을 상대해 왔습니다. 고구려가 요동 방어선에서 한 방식도 그런 것이고, 발견되는 수많은 성들을 보면 상당히 정교하게 짠 것으로 보입니다. 평성과 산성을 조화하고, 큰 성과 작은 성들을 연계해 군사부터 행정까지를 맡는 것이죠. 이 성들의 전방에는 적의 공격을 탐지하는 보루들이 있었구요(위에 이세적의 우회기동이 바로 이걸 무력화시킨 거죠). 이것이 수와 당이라는 초강대국을 막은 고구려의 자존심이었죠. 천리장성이 정확히 어떤 형태였으며, 여당전쟁에서 얼마나 큰 위력을 발휘했는지는 연구가 계속 진행돼야 할 겁니다. 1차 전쟁이 끝나고도 2년이나 더 걸려서 완성시킨 걸 보면 전쟁에 아무런 효과가 없는 헛짓은 아니었다는 것 정도만 확신할 수 있겠죠. 이후에도 당의 공격은 계속됐지만, 요동 방어선에 대군을 정면으로 들이박는 방식은 더 이상 없었습니다. (하려고는 했죠) 대신에 다른 방식을 써야 했죠. 이 방어선을 무너뜨린 건 당의 힘이 아니었습니다. 고구려 자신의 내분이었죠. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 요동에 병력을 들이부었지만 안 됐습니다. 태종은 고구려에 대한 욕심을 버리지 않았지만, 수양제처럼 생각 없이 밀어붙이는 사람이 아니었죠. 당은 두 가지로 방침을 짭니다. 요동에 대한 공격 자체는 계속했지만, 국운을 걸 정도의 대군은 아니었습니다. 치고 빠지기였죠. 잽을 계속 날리는 거였지만, 그게 당에게나 잽이었지 고구려에게는 아니었죠. 이렇게 고구려에 피해를 누적시키고 농사를 제대로 짓지 못 하게 하는 거였습니다. 한편으로는 수군을 보내 요동 후방을 공격합니다. 역시 치고 빠지기였습니다. 이렇게 고구려에 소모전을 강요합니다. 이렇게 되면서 고구려의 후방에 있는 신라의 중요성이 갈수록 올라갔습니다. 후방에 제 2전선을 만들어 고구려의 병력을 분산시킬 수 있고, 수군을 보낼 경우 호응할 수 있었으니까요. 이러면서 고구려와 백제에게도 신라는 확실히 없어져야 될 존재가 됐습니다. 이미 당의 대군을 한 번 박아냈습니다. 신라는 끈 떨어진 신세가 되었죠. 양국은 신라에 대한 공세를 계속합니다. 이렇게 되면서 신라는 더욱 몰렸고, 당에 더욱 기대게 됩니다. 당 역시 신라의 중요성이 올라간 상황에서 그냥 망하게 둘 순 없었죠. 구원을 청하는 제후국을 망하게 놔두면 황제국의 위신은 떨어지고, 대고구려전에서 가장 중요한 장기말이 사라지는 거니까요. 648년, 신라에서 거물을 당으로 보냅니다. 김춘추였죠. 그는 태종과의 만남에서 중요한 약속을 받아 냅니다.
