여수전쟁, 여당전쟁은 고수, 고당으로도 많이 불립니다. 좀 특이하죠. 전한 후한 사이에 왕망이 고구려를 하구려라 한 것에서 볼 수 있듯 려 쪽을 중심으로 보거든요. 삼국들이 다 그렇고 고려도 그렇구요. 삼국사기 때부터 이어진 전통이기도 합니다. 지금으로 보면 한일전 대신 대일전이라고 하는 식인 거죠. 뭐 따지고 보면 결국 고유어의 음차일 뿐인데, 조선처럼 고구려 자체를 이름으로(그러니까 파생어가 아니라 단일어) 고라는 걸 못 할 거야 없습니다. 고려랑 구분하겠다 그런 것도 있을 거구요. 그래도 재미있는 부분입니다. 고라는 글자의 어감 때문일까요? 물론 그냥 고백신이라고 통일하는 사람도 있습니다. 이런 경우야 상관 없죠. ------------------------------------------ "연개소문. 그대가 천하의 질서를 어기려 하는가?" "질서? 그거이 누구레 정하는 건데?" 혼란에 빠진 타국에 개입한다는 건 전쟁의 좋은 명분이 됩니다. 대등한 나라끼리도 그럴 건데 황제국이 제후국에 끼어든다, 더 좋은 명분이었죠. 그것도 감히 신하가 왕을 시해하다니 하는 논리라면 말이죠. 당태종은 고구려 정벌을 슬슬 추진하려 했습니다. 우선 장손무기의 주장을 받아들여 보장왕을 인정했죠. 전쟁을 준비하는 데에 시간이 더 필요했습니다. 병력을 모을 시간은 물론, 여수전쟁을 잘 알고 있는 신하들을 설득할 시간이 필요했죠. 그러는 동안 하나의 명분이 그를 찾아 옵니다. 신라였죠. 643년 9월, 신라의 사신이 도착해 여제가 연합해 공격하려 한다고 전합니다. 태종이 대책이 있냐고 물으니 이렇게 답하죠. "우리 임금은 일의 사정이 궁하고 계책도 다하여, 오로지 대국에게 위급함을 알려 나라가 온전하기를 바랄 뿐입니다." 이 때까진 백제도 조공을 열심히 했고, 신라를 치지 말라고 하니까 고구려와는 달리 듣는 척이라도 했습니다. 고구려를 쳐 달라 한 것도 같았구요. 당에서는 사이좋게 지내라 정도만 했고 딱히 어느 한 편을 확실히 들진 않았죠. 하지만 이후로는 상황이 바뀝니다. 백제가 대 고구려전에 도움이 될 것 같지 않았고, 신라는 그 반대였으니까요. 신라로서는 살 길이 당에 매달리는 것 뿐이었고 대 고구려전에도 열심일 것이었습니다. 최소한 고구려의 공격을 받고 있는 것만으로도 가치가 있었죠. 뭐 아직은 쓴 맛을 보기 전이었고, 신라의 가치를 그리 크게 보진 않았을 겁니다만. 뭐 그렇게 당의 선택을 받긴 했지만... 그렇게 매달리는 만큼 당의 태도도 신라에 굴욕적이긴 했습니다. 위의 말에 대해 태종은 세 가지 계책을 말해줍니다. 첫째, 말갈과 거란을 포함한 소수의 병력으로 요동으로 쳐들어가면 된다. 그러면 1년 정도는 괜찮을 거다. 하지만 그걸로 끝이면 저들이 다시 침략해 올 거다. 둘쨰, 당나라 옷과 깃발 수천을 줄 테니 적들이 올 때 세워 놓으면 놀라서 도망칠 거다. 셋째, 바다를 건너 백제를 기습하겠다. 그런데 그대의 나라는 여인을 임금으로 삼았기에 이웃나라에게 업신여김을 당하니, 내가 왕족 중 한 사람을 보내 임금으로 삼겠다. 혼자 왕노 릇할 순 없으니 안정될 때까지 병사를 보내 보호하겠다. 셋 중에 뭐가 좋냐고 하니 제대로 대답을 하지 못 했합니다. 아무리 황제라 한들 여왕이라 업신여김을 당한다 말을 들었는데 어떻게 대답을 할 수 있었겠습니까. 뭐 김춘추 등이라면 대답을 잘 했을지 모르겠지만요. 이에 대한 선덕여왕 등 신라 지배층의 반응이 어땠는지는 나오지 않습니다. "너희 백제는 왜 고구려와 짜고 신라의 조공길을 막나?" "아 신라 저것이 싸가지 없이 노니께!" 뭐 이런 말과는 별개로 다시 고구려와 백제를 압박합니다. 이 해 11월 의자왕은 고구려와 화친을 맺은 후 한강 유역의 요충지인 당항성을 공격합니다. 전황이 어느 정도였는지는 알려져 있지 않지만, 이번에도 참 죽어라 막아내고 있었을 겁니다. 하지만 신라가 당에 구원을 청하면서 물러나야 했습니다. 당에서 사농승 상리현장을 사신으로 보냈 백제를 압박했고, 의자왕은 사신을 보내 고구려와 연합해 신라를 공격한 건 사실이 아니라고 합니다. 의자왕도 답답할 수밖에요. 명백한 내정간섭이고, 잘 싸우다가도, 아니 잘 싸워서 당에게 막히고 있었으니까요. 그의 생각에도 슬슬 변화가 옵니다. 당나라의 관심은 고구려에게 가 있었고, 당은 말만 하지 백제에 직접 해를 끼칠 수 있을 것 같진 않았을 테니까요. 한편 상리현장은 고구려에도 가서 압박을 가했죠. "신라는 인질을 보낸 나라이며 조공을 계속하는 나라이다. 그대와 백제는 군사를 철수하여야 한다. 만약 다시 신라를 공격하면, 내년에는 병사를 내어 그대의 나라를 칠 것이다." 644년 정월의 일이었죠. 연개소문은 이미 자기가 직접 가서 신라의 성 두 개를 점령한 상황이었습니다. 보장왕이 당에서 사신이 왔다고 직접 불러와야 했죠. 연개소문은 단호히 거절합니다. 이전에 다뤘듯 여수전쟁 기간에 신라가 고구려를 공격했을 수도 있을 겁니다. 신라의 수세를 강조하려고 기록에 남기지 않은 것일 수도 있겠죠. 뭐 그래도 그냥 명분쌓기용으로 진흥왕 때의 일을 말한 게 아닐까 싶습니다. 상리현장은 이렇게 말하며 다시 연개소문을 설득하려 하지만, 듣지 않습니다. "지난 일을 어찌 추궁할 수 있겠는가? 지금 요동의 여러 성은 본래 중국의 군현이었지만 중국에서는 이를 따지지 않고 있다. 어찌 고구려만 반드시 옛 땅을 찾으려 하는가?" 이후 다시 사신을 보냈지만, 이번에도 듣지 않았고 오히려 동굴에 가둬버렸죠. 뭐 어차피 연개소문이 그렇게 나오는 게 태종에겐 더 좋았을 겁니다. 돌아온 상리현장의 말을 들은 태종은 이렇게 말 합니다. 명분쌓기가 끝났음을 말하는 거죠. "연개소문이 자기 임금을 시해하고 자기 나라의 대신들을 해쳤으며, 제 백성들을 학대하였다. 게다가 이제는 나의 명령을 듣지 않고 이웃나라를 함부로 침략했으니 그를 토벌하지 않을 수 없다." 이 해 9월에 연개소문이 태종을 달래보려는 건지 사신을 보내 백금을 바칩니다. 여기에 관리 50명을 궁중 숙위로 보내겠다고 했지만(인질 개념입니다), 태종은 이를 받지 않고 왕을 시해한 자를 도우니 죄가 크다면서 사신들을 벌 주죠. 이렇게 고구려 공격이 진행됩니다. 당연히 많은 반대가 따랐습니다. 무엇보다 수나라 때의 기억이 크게 남아 있었으니까요. 태종은 그들을 설득하면서 밀어붙입니다. 장안의 부자 노인들(유력자들이겠죠)을 모아 잔치를 베풀면서 설득할 정도였죠. 전국에 반포한 조서에도 수나라와는 다르다는 걸 강조했구요. 여기에 백성들에게 피해를 최대한 주지 않겠다는 것도 강조합니다. 병사의 숙소 등을 짓는 비용을 절반이나 삭감하게 하면서 말이죠.  11월, 고구려 원정이 시작됩니다. 수군 4만 3천을 이끄는 건 형부상서 장량, 그리고 육군 6만(+거란, 말갈병 등)을 이끄는 건 당대의 명장이자 훗날 고구려를 끝내 버린 이세적이었습니다. 그리고 태종 자신도 6군을 거느리고 출정했죠. 여수전쟁과는 달리 정확한 수가 나오지 않고, 위에 수가 나온 걸 합쳐 10만 정도로 잡기도 하는데 태종이 직접 거느린 병력들도 있으니 더 많이 잡아도 될 겁니다. 여수전쟁 때처럼 많을 것 같진 않지만요. +) 이세적은 하필 세자가 이세민의 세와 같아서 세를 떼버렸고, 이적으로도 잘 알려져 있습니다. 심지어 관세음보살도 관음보살이 됐죠. 이름 좀 어려운 걸로 바꾸지 무슨 민폡니까. 이 때 태종은 여러 나라들에 조서를 보냅니다. 신라와 백제도 당연히 포함됐죠. 하지만 내용은 달랐습니다. 신라에는 644년, 5년 초 두 차례 사신을 보내 신라도 출병할 것을 명령합니다. 특히 645년에 온 것은 4월에 당군이 고구려에 도착할 것이라는 것, 신라도 그 때에 맞춰 북진하고 장량의 명령을 들을 것이라는 거였습니다. 반면 백제에게는 출병하라는 말만 할 뿐 구체적인 건 말해주지 않습니다. 백제가 고구려와 편 먹은 줄 알았는데 아니었구나 하는 은근한 협박과 함께 말이죠. 거기다 신라로 가는 사신을 안전히 보내주라는 것까지 덧붙였죠. 건드리지 말라는 거였습니다. 백제는 군사는 보내지는 않고 갑옷을 바쳤는데, 고구려를 공격할 때 군사들에게 그 갑옷을 입게 했다고 합니다. 백제산이 방어력이 좋거나 뽀대가 났을 순 있겠는데, 그보단 백제도 우리 편을 든다는 의미겠죠. 당은 이렇게 두 나라를 어떻게 대접할 지 보여줬습니다. 그리고 두 나라는 거기에 맞게 행동했죠. 백제의 위협이 계속되고 있었습니다. 김유신의 유명한 일화가 이 무렵 나왔습니다. 공을 세우고 경주로 돌아왔는데, 백제의 공격 때문에 집에도 들리지 않고 간 일 말이죠. 집을 지나갔지만, 다른 병사들도 집에 들리지 못 할 테니 들어가지 않고 대신 물을 떠 오게 해서 물 맛이 같으니 별 일 없구나 했다는 이야기입니다. 이런 상황에서 고구려를 공격한다... 고민이 많을 수밖에요. 하지만 지금은 그들의 진심과 가치를 보여줘야 했습니다. 신라는 3만의 병력을 모아서 임진강을 넘어 고구려의 수구성을 공격, 점령합니다. 그리고 백제는 그 틈을 타서 신라를 공격, 성 7개를 빼앗았죠. 십여년 후, 그들은 이 선택의 대가를 받게 되죠. -------------------------------------------------------- 이세적은 일부러 요란하게 진군하며 회원진을 통해 요동성으로 가는 척 하다가 은밀히 북쪽으로 길을 바꿔 통정진 쪽으로 도하합니다. 고구려는 이걸 예상하지 못 하고 당군이 요하를 건너 오자 놀랍니다. 이어 이도종이 이끄는 병력도 합류해서 신성 등을 공격했고, 주력은 남쪽으로 이동하며 개모성을 함락합니다. 연개소문이 원군 700명을 보냈지만 이들마저 당했죠. 한편 수군은 남쪽의 비사성을 점령하고 압록강으로 나아갑니다. 육군은 남진을 계속해 수양제의 한이 서린 요동성을 공격합니다. 고구려군도 맞서 싸워 한 차례 승리하지만, 결국 패했죠. 원군 4만명이 구원하러 왔지만 도종이 저지합니다. (이들이 입성을 했는지는 모르겠네요) 이런 가운데 태종이 요하를 건너죠. 늪지대를 건너며 설치한 다리를 철거해서 배수진 느낌으로 병사들에게 각오를 다지게 했다고 합니다. 그리고는 자신도 직접 흙을 나르고 시종 관원들에게도 그렇게 하게 했다고 합니다. 솔선수범했다는 거죠. 그렇게 다수의 공성기를 동원한 공격이 계속됩니다. 주몽의 사당에 빌면서 승리를 기원했지만 역부족이었죠. 그렇게 12일 밤낮의 공격으로 고구려군에 무려 1만의 사망자가 나왔고, 결국 요동성은 더 이상 버티지 못 합니다. 성 안의 남은 병력 1만여와 4만여 백성들이 포로가 되었죠. 수나라와의 전쟁과는 차원이 다르게 된 것이었죠. 충격이 클 수밖에 없었을 겁니다. 이 때문인지 백암성은 공격을 받자 배신해서 당에 투항합니다. 이렇게 공들여 만들고 여수전쟁 때 그렇게 버텼던 요동방어선에 구멍이 뚫리고 있었습니다. 고구려에겐 끔찍한 일이었죠. 태종은 남진해 다음 목표로 향합니다. 안시성이었죠. 고구려 역시 이 상황이 얼마나 심각한 지를 잘 알고 있었고, 모든 힘을 쥐어짰죠. 안시성을 공격하는 당군에 태종도 놀랄 정도의 대군이 나타납니다. 진의 길이가 40리에 이르렀다 하고, 그 수는 무려 15만이었습니다. 고구려를 따르던 말갈 세력까지 쥐어짜서 동원한 병력이었죠. 그들을 이끄는 장수는 북부욕살 고연수, 남부욕살 고혜진, 대로 고정의였었습니다. 욕살은 고구려의 지방행정구역인 5부를 다스리는 지방관입니다. 간단히 전부 다 고씨죠. 거물들이 대군을 이끌고 온 겁니다. 태종은 고구려군이 어찌 나올지를 이리 분석합니다. +) 이 때 태종이 고구려의 대군을 보고 두려워하자 이도종이 고구려군은 온 힘을 다 쏟은 것이니 5천명을 주면 평양을 쳐서 이길 거라고 주장합니다. 태종은 거부했다 합니다. "지금 고연수에게 전략이 있다면 그것은 다음의 세 가지이다. 첫째, 병사를 이끌고 직접 앞으로 나와서 안시성과 연결되는 보루를 쌓고, 높은 산의 험한 지세에 의지하여 성 안의 곡식을 먹으면서 말갈군을 풀어 우리의 마소를 약탈하는 것이다. 이렇게 되면 우리가 공격한다고 해도 빨리 함락시킬 수 없고, 되돌아가려 해도 늪지에 가로막히게 될 것이다. 그러므로 우리의 군사들은 가만히 앉아서 곤란한 지경에 빠지게 되니, 이것이 상책이다. 둘째, 성 안의 무리를 이끌고 야간도주를 하는 것이니, 이것이 중책이다. 셋째, 자신의 지혜와 재능을 모르고 우리와 대적하는 것이니, 이것이 하책이다. 그대들은 두고 보라. 그가 반드시 하책을 가지고 나올 것이니, 그들을 사로잡게 되는 작전이 내 눈 앞에서 벌어질 것이다." 그러면서 돌궐기병을 보내 거짓으로 패하게 했고, 고연수에게 사신을 보내 이렇게 말합니다. "나는 너희 나라의 권력 있는 신하가 왕을 시해한 죄를 물으러 온 것이니, 우리가 서로 전투를 하게 된 것은 나의 본심이 아니다. 너희 나라의 경내에 들어오니 마초와 양식이 충분하지 않아 몇 개의 성을 빼앗기는 하였으나, 너희 나라가 신하의 예절을 지킨다면 잃었던 성은 반드시 돌려 줄 것이다." 고연수 등이 이걸 그대로 믿었을 것 같진 않지만, 태종이 자신들을 달래는 걸 보고 방심은 했던 모양입니다. 고정의는 장기전으로 끌고 가 군량이 떨어지길 기다리자고 했지만, 고연수는 작은 싸움에서 이긴 후 쉬운 싸움이라면서 거부합니다. 태종의 계략에 넘어간 것이죠. 태종은 이세적에게 1만 5천을 주고 고구려군을 유인하게 한 후 장손무기 등에게 뒤를 치게 합니다. 혼란에 빠진 고구려군은 대패합니다. 태종은 소수의 병력을 이끌고 매복했다가 깃발을 들고 북과 나팔을 울려 자신이 직접 왔음을 알려 고구려군의 사기를 떨어뜨렸고, 설인귀는 괴상한 옷을 입고 고구려군을 휩쓸었죠. 이 때 고구려군의 피해는 무려 2만이었다고 합니다. 고연수 등은 남은 이들을 이끌고 산에서 방어했지만, 당의 포위에 포기하고 맙니다. 남은 3만 6천 8백을 이끌고 항복합니다. 지원을 기대할 수 없는 상황이었다 하지만 패배 후 항복까지는 하루밖에 걸리지 않았습니다. 태종은 고구려군은 3천 5백명을 받아들이고 나머지는 석방하는 파격적인 모습을 보여줍니다. (개모성 공격 때 원군으로 왔다 당한 700명도 항복하자 풀어줬죠) 수양제와는 달리 나는 진짜 관대하다가 뭔지를 보여주기 위함이었겠죠. 다 받아들이자니 다시 배반할 위험이 있거나 군량 문제도 있었을 거구요. 반대로 말갈군 3천 3백명은 생매장합니다. 우리 대신 고구려 편을 들면 어떻게 되는지 똑똑히 보라는 거겠죠. 이렇게 고구려가 온 힘을 기울인 대군이 허무하게 무너집니다. 이 충격으로 후황성 등에서 성을 버리고 달아나기까지 했죠. 태종은 이를 기념해 자신이 있던 산의 이름을 주필산으로 바꿉니다. -------------------------------------------------------- 무너지는 요동 방어선, 15만 대군의 소멸... 꽤나 충격적이지만 아무래도 패배를 숨기고 싶기에 잘 알려지지 않은 전투입니다. 거기에 안시성 전투 앞에 있기에, 절정 앞의 위기 느낌이라 충격이 좀 덜 하죠. 뭐 간단히만 보면 지휘관들이 영 아니었고, 양측의 전투력이 그 정도로 큰 차이가 났구나, 고구려는 진짜 답이 없구나 하는 거겠죠. 하지만 이걸 가지고 생각해 볼 게 꽤 많습니다. 이 전투뿐만 아니라 요동 방어선의 전투들을 포함해서 말이죠. 이제까지 전쟁에서 고구려의 대군이라도 5만 정도였고 대승을 거둔 여수전쟁에서는 정확한 규모가 나오지 않죠. 헌데 여당전쟁에서는 고구려군의 수가 여러 번 나오고, 그 수가 의외로 많습니다. 원군이 4만이 오고, 요동성은 1만명이 죽었는데 항복할 때 1만이 남아 있었고, 주필산 전투에선 무려 15만이 나왔죠. 기록들을 보면 이들이 각기 따로 동원된 겁니다. 좀 겹치더라도 다른 성들까지 생각하면 고구려가 동원한 건 30만을 넘어갑니다. 최대한 긁어모았다 하더라도 수도와 남쪽을 방비하는 최소한의 병력은 있었을 테니 고구려의 동원력은 더 커집니다. 이렇게 되면 정말 추측만 무성한 고구려의 인구와도 연결할 수 있죠. 과장은 당연히 생각해 봐야 됩니다. 아예 자기들 무리 16만 8천을 이끌고 투항했다고도 하니까요. 그럼 과장이면 또 실제 병력은 얼마나 됐을 것인가 생각해볼 수 있죠. 전사 2만 포로 3만 6천 8백이랬으니 이걸 합한 수+a가 가설이 될 수 있겠죠. 태종이 걱정할 정도의 대군이었다 하니 너무 줄여서 생각할 수도 없어요. 이러면 당군의 규모는 또 얼마나 되는지로 연결되죠. 수적으로는 딱히 꿀리지 않았다는 거니까요. 물론 여러 성을 공격하느라 병력을 많이 나눈 상태지만, 태종의 본대의 규모에 대한 논의는 곧 당군 전체의 수가 얼마냐로 이어지죠. 성들이 계속 함락되는 상황과 저 대군들을 연결시켜 보면 또 재미있습니다. 여수전쟁 때도 야전을 하긴 했지만, 1차 여당전쟁에서는 야전이 계속 나옵니다. 전에는 이미 성에서 지키고 있었을 병력이 이 때 성에 안/못 있었던 거라면? 대응이 늦어서 도착하지 못 했거나, 방어만으로는 안 되겠다 제가 이런 점들에 명확한 답을 내릴 정도는 못 되겠군요. 이런 전쟁의 흐름이나 배경이 된 천리장성에 대한 얘기는 다음 편에 하겠습니다. 주필산 전투에 대한 얘기를 더 하면서 마무리하죠. "유공권(당 말기의 서예가)의 소설에서는 ‘주필산 전쟁에서 고구려가 말갈과 군사를 연합하여 그 군사가 바야흐로 40리나 뻗쳤다. 태종이 이를 보고 두려워하는 기색이 있었다.’라고 하였으며, 또한 ‘황제의 6군이 고구려 군사에게 제압되어 거의 꼼짝 못하였네. 영공의 휘하에 있는 검은 깃발이 포위되었다고 척후병이 보고하였을 때 황제가 크게 두려워하였네.’라고 하였다. 비록 끝내는 스스로 탈출했으나 저와 같이 겁을 내었거늘 신ㆍ구당서나 사마공의 자치통감에 이를 기록하지 않았으니, 나라의 체면 때문에 말하기를 꺼려한 것이 아니겠는가." 이게 정말 허무하게 한 방으로 끝난 패배냐 하기엔 김부식부터가 반론을 폅니다. ( '-') 자치통감고이에는 이세적이 그 때 패할 뻔 했다면서, 태종이 직접 고구려군을 쳐서 승리하지 않았다면 자기가 포로가 됐을 거라고 합니다. 수당가화에도 양군이 붙었을 때 당군이 밀렸다가 역전한 거라고 하고 말이죠. 이걸로 본다면 초반은 당군의 유인책이 아니라 고구려군의 승리였고, 당군이 힘들게 이긴 게 됩니다. 당군의 피해도 적지 않았겠죠. 잘 졌지만 싸웠다 수준은 아닌 거고, 나름대로 싸울만큼 싸웠다는 거죠. ----------------------------------- 주변의 성들은 무너졌고, 구원군도 당했습니다. 이제 안시성을 도울 이는 없었죠. 하지만 성 내의 반응은 생각과는 달랐습니다. 자원을 압도적으로 많이 가진 쪽이 이리저리 오랜시간 지지고 볶고 하면서 경험치까지 만땅이 되면, 그를 웬만해선 막을 수 없다..가 제 지론인데,
당나라가 계속 경험치를 쌓아나가는 중이군요. 다만 신라가 마지막에 당나라군을 물리친 것은 정말 대단하다고 하지 않을 수 없습니다.
..하지만 이 이야기는 좀 더 먼 훗날의 이야기이고..
안시성 전투 기대할게요. :) 대하소설 읽는 것 같은 기분이에요.
