(정확한 시점은 모르겠습니다) 4월에 다시 요하로 나아가니 그 수는 30만, 역시 내호아의 수군도 포함한 수륙협공이었습니다. 우선 이전 전투에서 유일하게 공을 세웠다는 왕안공을 요동성 북쪽의 신성에 투입합니다. 고구려군도 수만명을 동원해 성에서 나와 맞섰지만, 왕안공이 기병 1천을 동원해 격파합니다. 고구려군은 성 안으로 후퇴했고, 성은 포위당했죠. 이렇게 요동성을 고립시켰고, 본대가 강을 건너 요동성을 포위합니다. 한편으로 설세웅에게 별동대를 맡겨 압록강의 오골성으로 가게 했죠. 수는 엄청나게 많이 줄었지만, 기본적인 방침은 전과 같았습니다. 하지만 결정적으로 다른 게 있었으니... (...) 고구려를 신경 쓸 수가 없는 상황이 된 겁니다. 여기에 병부시랑 곡사정은 양현감과 친했던 것을 걱정해서 (혹은 실제로 내통했는데 그게 걸릴까봐) 고구려에 투항해 버렸죠. 병부시랑인만큼 수군의 상황을 아주 잘 알고 있던 자였습니다. 수군은 공성무기부터 많은 무기, 자재들을 버리고 급히 돌아가야 했습니다. 나름대로 고구려군의 뒷치기를 막으려고 진을 걷지 않고 밤에 몰래 후퇴했죠. 고구려군은 계략인가 의심하고 수의 병력이 워낙에 많은지라 거리를 두고 추격하다가 본대가 요하를 다 건넜다 싶자 뒤를 공격, 큰 피해를 입힙니다. 고구려도 두 차레의 전쟁으로 지칠 대로 지쳐 있었을 겁니다. 수나라의 내부 사정 덕분에 빨리 끝났으니 다행이었죠. 그래도 이번에도 성 하나도 뺏기지 않았습니다. 역시 정말 잘 싸운 거죠. 하지만... ----------------------------------------------------------- "신미에 조서를 내려 백관들로 하여금 다시 고구려를 정벌하는 일에 대해 의논하게 하였는데, 며칠이 지나도 감히 말하는 자가 없었다. 무자에 조칙을 내려 다시 천하의 군사를 징발하여 모든 길을 따라 모두 나오게 하였다." 614년 2월 (...)  "아 저번에 아슬아슬했던 거 봤잖아? 한 번만 더 밀면 돼. 올해는, 올해는 진짜..." 에 뭐 그런 거죠. 양현감의 반란은 막았지만, 그와 함께 거병했던 이밀 등의 반란이 계속되고 있었습니다. 이래서 대부분의 병사들이 제 때 모이지 못 했고, 모인 자들도 탈영병이 줄을 이었죠. 이 때 그나마 잘 돌아갔던 게 계속 싸웠으면 어떻게 됐을지 모르겠지만, 고구려도 더 이상 전쟁을 할 마음이 없었습니다. 매년 대군을 동원하는 그 능력에 기가 꺾일 수밖에 없었고, 그간 고구려가 받은 피해 역시 너무 누적돼 있었기 때문이었죠. 거기에 수나라의 상황도 안 좋은 것도 알고 있었으니 적당히 숙여주면 양제도 물러날 거라 생각했겠죠. 결국 투항한 곡사정을 보내는 결단을 내립니다. 곡사정에겐 미안한 일이지만요. 양제는 곡사정을 거열형으로 죽인 후 삶아서 신하들에게 먹게 합니다. 아첨하는 자들은 배가 부를 정도로 먹었다고 합니다. 양제가 이 정도로 물러난 것만 봐도 그가 처한 상황을 알 수 있습니다. 이 때 고구려에서 영양왕의 입조를 약속했는데 애초에 지킬 리가 없는 약속이었죠. 이래서 또또 다시 고구려를 칠까 말은 했지만, 이루어질 수 없는 꿈이었죠. 온갖 반란이 중국을 휩쓸고 있었으니까요. 양제는 반란을 피해 장강 이남의 강도로 피난 갔고, 거기서 실의에 빠져서 술이나 처먹고 살게 됩니다. 이러니 반란은 더욱 더 크게 일어났고, 자기들끼리도 싸우는 군웅할거의 시대가 다시 와 버렸죠. 양제는 장안을 서도로, 낙양을 동도로 하고 강남의 강도까지 삼도를 정하고 손자들을 배치했는데, 강도 이외의 남은 두 곳도 군웅들에게 먹혀 버렸죠. 왕세충은 낙양을 먹었고 장안은 양제의 이종사촌형이었던 이연이 먹습니다. 이연은 양광을 폐위하고 손자 양유를 황제로 앉히죠. 그렇게 정신이 나가 있던 양제는 결국 측근에 의해 죽게 되니... 우문술의 아들 근위장 우문화급이 난을 일으킨 것이었죠. (우문술은 그 전에 죽습니다.) 618년의 일이었습니다. "내가 무슨 죄를 저질러 이 지경이 되었는가?" "폐하는 종묘를 버리고 천하순행을 그치지 않으면서 오직 대외원정에만 여념이 없었습니다. 안으로 음사(淫奢)를 그치지 않자 백성이 기댈 곳을 잃게 되고 사방에서 도둑이 창궐하게 되었습니다. 그런데도 간신의 말만 믿고 간언을 하는 자를 물리쳤으니 이 어찌 죄가 아니라고 하겠습니까?" - 마문거 "듣고 보니 짐이 천하의 백성을 저버린 것이 사실인 듯하다. 그러나 너희는 높은 영예와 많은 봉록을 누렸는데도 어찌하여 이런 일을 벌인 것인가? 과연 누가 주도한 것인가?" "하늘 아래 모든 사람이 원망하고 있으니 어찌 한 사람에 그치겠습니까?" - 사마덕감 이 말을 들은 양제는 죽음을 피할 수 없음을 알고 그래도 황제니까 목은 자르지 말라면서 독주를 달라고 합니다. 안 된다고 하니까 목을 매고 죽었죠. 폭군의 허망한 끝이었습니다.  그가 죽은 후 삼도의 군웅들은 황족을 옹립했다가 선양의 방식으로 나라를 세웁니다. 그 중 장안의 이연이 세운 나라가 바로 당唐이죠. -------------------------------------------------------------- 長白山頭知世郎 純著紅羅錦背襠 장백산 아래에서 나(지세랑)는 비단옷 대신에 농부의 옷을 입었다. 橫槊侵天半， 輪刀耀日光。 긴 창이 하늘의 반을 가리우고, 전쟁무기를 실은 수레들이 분주하게 움직이네. 上山吃獐鹿， 下山食牛羊。 산 위에서 노루와 사슴을 잡고, 들에서는 소와 양을 잡으며 평화롭게 지냈는데. 忽聞官軍至， 提劍向前蕩。 문득 들으니 관군이 도착하여 칼을 들고, 전쟁터로 사람들을 끌고 가고 있다 하네. 譬如遼東豕， 斬頭何所傷。 사람들이여, 요동에서 죽는 것을 깨달아라. 참혹하게 머리가 잘리며 부상당한 모습을. 611년 민간에서 유행했다는 무향요동낭사가(無向遼東浪死歌) "요동에 가서 떠돌다 죽지 말자라는 노래" 요수의 동쪽 조선의 지역에 대해서 우공은 황복으로 삼았고, 주왕은 버려두고서 신하로 삼지 않았다. 그러고는 기미책을 쓰면서 성교(聲敎)가 미치게 하였으니, 이는 참으로 백성을 사랑하고자 한 것이지 영토를 넓히자는 것이 아니었다. 강한 쇠뇌라도 쏘지 않으면 이치상 얇은 비단도 뚫을 수 없는 법이고, 폭풍의 마지막 힘으로는 어찌 가벼운 깃털인들 움직일 수가 있겠는가. 돌밭은 차지해 보았자 쓸모가 없는 법이고 닭갈비는 버려두는 것이 제대로 쓰는 것이다. 그런데 백성이 많고 군사가 강한 것을 믿고는 무력을 함부로 남용하였는바, 이는 오로지 병탄하는 데만 뜻이 있고 장구한 계책은 하지 않은 것이다. 무력은 불과 같은 것이어서 단속하지 않으면 저절로 불타는 법이다. 이에 드디어 억만의 군사들을 몰살시켜 한 사람도 살아 돌아오지 못하게 하였다. 부차가 나라를 잃은 것은 실로 황지의 싸움으로 인해서였으며, 부견이 자신을 멸망시킨 것은 참으로 수탕의 싸움으로 말미암은 것이다. 앞에서 울고 있는 매미를 잡으려다가 뒤에서 자신을 노리고 있는 자를 알지 못하였다. 패전하여 돌아 오는 군사들이 서로 돌아보고 과부를 조문하는 자들이 줄을 이루었으니, 의부(義夫)가 이를 갈며 장사가 팔을 걷어붙이는 바이다 - 양현감과 함께 반란을 일으킨 이밀이 내세운, 수양제의 열 가지 죄 중 일곱번째 고구려와의 전쟁이 수나라에 얼마나 큰 영향을 끼쳤는지 알 수 있는 부분이죠. 양제가 막장이었으니 망할 위험이야 언제든 있었지만, 고구려와의 전쟁에서 그 많은 인력과 물자를 소비하지 않았다면, 그 자신이 고구려에 그렇게까지 집착을 하지 않고 내정을 살폈다면 어떻게 됐을지 모를 일입니다. 중국의 대명사 중 하나인 당이 수로 바뀌었을 수도 있겠죠. 하지만 그게 아니었으니... ------------------------------------------------------ 한반도에서는 심심할 때마다 전쟁이 일어나고 있었습니다. 특히 신라와 백제가 열심히 싸웠죠. 고구려도 나제가 수를 끌어들이려 한 것에 대한 보복 등으로 여유가 날 때마다 공격했구요. 이후 연개소문이 한 말(수나라와 전쟁 중 신라가 우리 땅 오백리를 뺏었다)을 보면 신라->고구려도 분명히 있었을 겁니다. 진흥왕 때 일을 가지고 언플한 걸수도 있겠지만요. 전체적으로는 신라가 밀리고 있었습니다. 함경도 쪽 땅이야 애초에 기대를 안 했겠지만, 한강 유역을 차지한 대가로 양쪽의 공격을 한 몸에 받을 수밖에 없었으니까요. 무왕은 서동요가 맞다면 장인어른을 참 괴롭힌 거죠. 이렇게 경기도 북쪽-강원도 쪽은 고구려에 밀리고, 경기도 남쪽-충청도부터 옛 가야 지역까지도 차츰 점령해 나갔죠. 신라도 반격을 하긴 했습니다만... 애초에 진흥왕 때 넓힌 영토가 너무 컸습니다. 진평왕은 땅은 조금 잃더라도 한강 유역만큼은 지켜내면서 버티고 내정도 잘 한 편이죠. 여제의 공격이 이후에 비해 그리 적극적이지 않았을 수도 있지만요. 수나라가 무너진 상황, 고구려는 이제 한숨 돌리면서 피해를 복구하면서 남쪽에 대한 압박은 여전히 한 모양이구요. 양제가 죽고 당이 건국된 618년에 영양왕도 죽습니다. 정말 힘들게 잘 싸워 줬습니다. 평원왕과 그가 있었기에 고구려의 수명은 더 늘어났겠죠. 이제 고구려의 운명은 평양성 전투의 영웅, 영양왕의 동생인 영류왕 고건무에게 맡겨집니다. 한편 남쪽의 두 나라는 여전히 열심히 싸우고 있었죠. (...) 고구려로서는 중국의 혼란이 예전처럼 오래 갔으면 했을 겁니다. 그래야 요동을 넘보지 못 하죠. 하지만 중원에는 왜 그리도 인재가 많은지...  당 고조는 빠르게 다른 군벌들을 깨뜨려 갔습니다. 여기서 정말 최고의 활약을 보여 준 이가 있었으니, 그의 둘째 아들 이세민이었죠. 그 덕분에 수의 멸망은 또 다른 전국시대가 아닌 수당으로 하이패스 교체기가 돼 버렸죠. 삼국은 이런 중국의 정세에 빠르게 반응합니다. 영류왕은 619년부터 매해 조공을 바치면서 유화책을 폈고, 당고조가 붙잡혀 있는 수나라 사람들을 돌려보내달라고 하자 1만에 이르는 사람들을 돌려보냅니다. 이런 가운데서 도교도 고구려에 들어오죠. 백제와 신라도 621년부터 조공했고, 626년에는 고구려가 조공길을 막고 자기들을 핍박한다며 혼내 달라고 합니다. (...) 고조야 중국을 안정시키는 게 먼저였으니 고구려에 적대적이지 않았습니다. 하지만 그 아들놈은 달랐죠. 능력으로 봐도 중국의 그 긴 역사에서 손 꼽히는 명군이었고, 야망으로 봐도 그랬습니다. "니 아바디 당태종이가 형제들 쳐 죽이고 황제 된 것도 하늘이 정한 질서네?" - 연개소문, 영화 황산벌 공으로만 따지면 최고였지만 고조의 선택은 맏이 이건성이었습니다. 셋째 이원길도 이건성의 편을 들었죠. 이세민은 이들과 대립했고, 피를 부르게 됩니다. 승자는 이세민이었죠. 이건성과 이원길은 자신은 물론 가족들도 몰살당했고, 이세민은 황태자의 자리에 오릅니다. 이를 현무문의 변이라고 합니다. 그리고 불과 두 달만에 황제의 자리에 오르죠. 그 묘호도 같은 조선 태종 이방원의 좋은 롤모델이죠. 뭐 이방원은 형들은 죽이지 않았지만요. 이렇게 이세민이 황위에 오르니 --------------------------------------------------- 당태종도 처음부터 고구려를 적대하진 않았습니다. 할 일이 많았으니까요. 백제와 신라가 고구려를 탓하자 고구려에게 사이 좋게 지내라고 하고, 신라가 백제가 괴롭힌다고 하자 무왕에게 신라랑 사이 좋게 지내라고 한 정도였죠. 일단 황제의 위엄을 보이는 정도였지만, 생각이야 이 때부터 하고 있었을 겁니다. 당태종의 대외 원정은 동서를 가리지 않았습니다. 당의 건국에 도움을 주기도 했지만 다시 적대로 돌아선 동돌궐을 630년에 멸망시켰고, 이를 통해 동북쪽의 유목민들을 제압합니다. 천가한, 유목민들을 이끄는 칸이라는 명예도 얻게 되었죠. 이어 서쪽의 티베트, 위구르 쪽을 공격, 고창국과 토욕혼부터 서돌궐을 밀어버리고 비단길을 장악합니다. 티베트의 토번에게는 공주를 보내서 화친했구요. 영류왕은 이런 상황을 주시하면서, 최대한 당과 척을 지지 않으려 했죠. 628년 당태종이 동돌궐을 잡고 그들의 칸인 힐리가한을 잡은 걸 축하하는 사신을 보냅니다. 이건 고구려에게도 큰 일이었죠. 고구려와 중국 사이에 있는 유목민들이 당의 손에 넘어간 거였으니까요. 이 때 적대하지 않는다는 의미로 고구려의 지도까지 줍니다. 3년 후에 당태종이 여수전쟁 후 세운 경관(京觀)을 헐어버리라고 하자 그 말도 들었죠 . 경관은 중국에서 적을 무너뜨린 후 적병의 해골을 묻은 기념물입니다. 굴욕이라면 굴욕이었지만 들어주었죠. 그런 한편 만약의 사태에 대비해 큰 사업을 벌이니, 그것이 바로 천리장성입니다. 요동방어선을 따라 쌓은 성으로, 무려 16년이나 걸렸습니다. 640년에는 직접 태자 고환권을 보내 조공합니다. 당에서 답례로 진대덕을 보냈는데, 그는 지나가는 길마다 관리들에게 선물을 주며 산천 구경을 하고 싶다고 했다고 합니다. 관리들은 그걸 다 들어주었고, 이걸 통해 고구려의 지리를 염탐할 수 있었죠. 고구려는 이 사실을 몰랐다고 하는데, 알면서도 묵인한 것일 수도 있습니다. 영류왕은 그를 환대했고, 재상인 대대로가 세 번이나 그를 찾아올 정도로 극진히 대접했다고 합니다. 당시 당은 서쪽의 고창국을 잡았을 때로, 영류왕도 그 소식을 듣고 책 잡히지 않으려고 한 거였죠. 이런 온건책에 대한 평가는 뒤에서 따로 하겠습니다. 그의 보고를 들은 당태종은 이렇게 말 했다 합니다. "고구려는 본래 중국의 4군이었던 곳이다. 내가 수만 명의 병사를 출동시켜 요동을 공격하면, 그들은 반드시 온 국력을 기울여 요동을 구원하러 나올 것이다. 이때 별도로 수군을 동래에서 출발시켜 바다로부터 평양을 향하게 하여 수륙군이 합세하면 고구려를 점령하기가 어렵지 않을 것이다. 다만 산동의 여러 고을에 전쟁의 상처가 아직 회복되지 않았으므로, 내가 그들을 수고롭게 하기를 원하지 않을 뿐이다." 이 때가 641년, 이미 그의 마음은 정해져 있었던 것이죠. 보시다시피 영류왕이 알아서 많이도 기었습니다. 당태종이 꽤나 세게 나온 것도 이러면 고구려가 어떻게 나올지 보려는 것이었겠죠. 정확한 기록이 없으니 자세한 사정은 알 수 없지만, 꽤나 큰 사건이 얼마 안 가 나옵니다. 642년, 천리장성의 새로운 감독자가 임명됩니다. 동부대인 연개소문이었죠. 그리고 그 해에 그의 쿠테타로 영류왕은 죽게 되죠. ------------------------------------------------------ 632년, 진평왕은 오랜 삶을 끝냅니다. 왕위에 있은 기간만 54년입니다. 참 힘든 시기였고, 잘 버텼습니다. 하지만 그 뒤는 더 힘들 것이었습니다. 그에게 아들은 없었고, 신성한 골품제로 인해 여왕이 나오는 초유의 사태가 벌어집니다. 무슨 여권신장 그런 거랑은 관련 없습니다. 성골 남자가 없어서 그런 거였죠. 선덕여왕 김덕만은 여러 전설을 통해 명군으로 보이는 여왕입니다. 하지만 그녀의 재위기간 동안 신라는 멸망에 가까운 타격을 입었고, 역사에 길이 빛날 명신들이 있었지만 실권이 그들에게 있었지 여왕 자신에게 있긴 했을지 의문이거든요. 그녀가 명군이었다 해도 정말 다사다난한 일을 겪은 왕이긴 했겠죠. 그 아래에서 문무 양쪽으로 맹활약을 한, 지금은 칭송과 욕을 함께 먹는 두 명신들이 등장합니다. 문으로는 김춘추, 무로는 김유신이었죠. 그녀가 왕위에 오른 해에 무왕은 태자를 임명합니다. 그 이름 부여의자였죠. 641년에 무왕이 죽고 그가 왕위를 이으니 의자왕입니다. 무왕은 신라를 공격하면서도 (진평왕이 잘 막았다고도 볼 수 있겠지만) 신라를 멸망시킬 정도로 국력을 쏟진 않았습니다. 익산 천도 시도에서 볼 수 있듯 내부를 닦는 데 집중했던 걸 수도 있구요. 외교에서도 균형을 지켰습니다. 수에게 고구려를 쳐 달라고 하면서도 딱히 원군을 보내거나 하지 않고 관망했고, 당에서 신라를 공격하지 말고 친하게 지내라고 하자 일단 멈춰서 말을 듣는 척 했습니다. 당에 밉보일 짓까진 안 하겠다는 방침이겠습니다. 하지만 그 아들은 달랐죠. 개인적인 원한이든 정치적인 이유든 신라를 정말 "현재 동북아의 긴장은 우리 당나라가 정한 국제 질서를 변방의 약소국인 너희 고구려와 백제가 따르지 않기 때문이다." 당태종, 그리고 그 뒤를 이은 당고종은 수양제처럼 무식하게 힘으로만 밀어붙이는 이들이 아니었습니다. 이런 삼국의 상황을 잘 이용했죠. 삼국 역시 이런 상황에 맞춰 각자 믿는 바에 따라 살 길을 모색합니다. 그렇게 남은 7세기 동안 동북아는 전쟁의 소용돌이에 휩싸였죠. 그게 지나간 후 삼국 중에 살아남은 나라는 하나 뿐이었습니다.
