"삼가 보건대, 요동의 자그마한 오랑캐가 엄한 형벌에 복종치 않아 멀리 6군의 군사가 출동하고 황제께서 직접 출동하시게끔 하였습니다. 다만 오랑캐들은 속임수를 잘 쓰는바, 이에 대해 잘 방비하여야만 하니, 그들이 입으로 항복한다고 말하더라도 성급하게 항복을 받아들이지 말아야만 합니다. 지금 장맛비가 내리고 있으니, 지체해서는 안 됩니다. 오로지 제군(諸軍)을 엄하게 절제해서 성화같이 속히 진격하되, 수군과 육군이 함께 진격해서 그들이 미처 생각지 못하고 있을 때 진격한다면, 외로운 평양성쯤은 곧바로 함락시킬 수 있을 것입니다. 만약 고구려의 근본 뿌리인 평양성이 넘어간다면 그 나머지 성들은 저절로 무너져 곧바로 평정할 수 있을 것입니다. 혹시라도 가을장마를 만날 경우에는 몹시 곤란할 것입니다. 군량은 다 떨어지고 강적인 고구려가 앞에 있고 말갈이 뒤에 있는데, 머뭇거리면서 결정짓지 못하는 것은 상책이 아닙니다" - 병부상서(정3품) 단문진 3월에 죽으면서 양제에게 저런 충고를 했다고 합니다. 딱딱 맞아들어가죠. 항복한다는 걸 믿지 마라, 시간을 끌면 안 된다... 하지만 양제는 둘 다 어겼죠. 수나라의 백십삼만대군, 이게 불가능한 수치는 아닙니다. 하지만 그 중국, 그 수나라라도 엄청나게 무리한 수치는 맞죠. 거기다 오래오래 준비한 게 아니라 급히 준비한 전쟁입니다. 안 그래도 오랑캐 땅-_-인 요동에 가기도 힘든데, 보급을 제대로 하기는 훨씬 더 힘들었죠. 그나마 수군을 이용한 보급이 가능했지만 급히 배를 만든다고 많은 사람들이 죽었다고 합니다. 요동까지 가는 데도 이런 상황인데, 방어선을 무시하고 강공하는 상황에선 어떻겠습니까. 보급부대가 따라갈 수가 없죠. 이래서 나름대로 혁신적인 방법이 동원됩니다. 식량을 짊어지고 가는 거였죠. 이들은 무려 백일치의 식량을 들고 갔고, 여기에 무기 등 다른 보급품도 메고 가야 했습니다. 사람마다 3석 이상의 무게라 하니... 한 석당 10kg로 따지더라도 어마어마하죠. 이걸 어찌 다 들고 가겠습니까. 병사들은 버리기 시작했고, 버리면 죽이겠다고 하자 땅에 묻어 버립니다. 이들이라고 안 먹으면 죽는다는 걸 왜 몰랐겠습니까. 들고 가다 죽을 것 같으니 그랬겠죠. 이걸 해결할 방법이 둘이나 있긴 했습니다. 첫째는 전통의 약탈이었죠. 전근대에 보급부대가 따라오지 못 한다면 적의 땅에서 돈 주고 사 먹거나 뺏을 수밖에 없었습니다. 하지만... 고구려는 이걸 불가능하게 만들었죠. 고구려는 이미 수도가 두 번이나 털렸던 나라입니다. 백제 공격할 때도 수도로 강공해서 이겼으니, 그 위험성을 잘 알고 있었죠. 35만(혹은 30만 5천) 대군은 고구려의 모든 역량을 동원해도 막기 힘든 대군이었습니다. 정면승부는 할 수 없었고, 그 힘을 최대한 빼야 했죠. 네, 청야 전술입니다. 그리고 두번째 방법은 그들이 남진하는 사이에 없어져 버립니다. --------------------------------------------------------------- "나는 본디 고구려에서 성을 튼튼히 지키고 들판을 깨끗이 비운 채 우리 군사를 기다리고 있을 것으로 생각하였다. 지금 그들 스스로가 죽을 곳으로 들어왔으니, 그들을 멸망시키고 아침을 먹겠다." 내호아는 수군을 이끌고 평양으로 향합니다. 상륙하자 고건무가 이끄는 고구려군이 기다렸는데, 저렇게 말 하면서 격파했죠. (저번 편에서 수군이라 했는데 아닙니다. - -a 고구려 수군은 중국의 수륙협공에 별다른 힘이 못 되었죠) 고구려군이 이것가지도 계산하고 유인한 건지, 야전으로 안 되겠으니 작전을 바꾼 건지는 모르겠습니다. 신이 난 내호아는 4만(혹은 5만)을 이끌고 직접 평양성을 공격하려 합니다. 별동대와 함께 공격하기로 했었고, 주변에서도 합류할 때까지 기다리자고 했지만 무시합니다. 그가 밀고 나가자 고구려군은 싸우는 척 하다가 다시 패합니다. 신이 날 대로 난 내호아는 그 날 밤에 약탈을 허락했죠. 하지만 평양성은 4중으로 이루어져 있었으니... 외성만 먹어 놓고 마음 놓아 버린 겁니다. 지 딴에는 두 번이나 이겼으니 설마 덤비겠냐 했겠죠. 하지만 고구려군은 병력을 보존하고 있었고, 이 모든 게 다 작전이었으니... 그 날 밤, 고건무는 500의 결사대를 이끌고 적을 기습합니다. 겨우 500이냐 하겠지만 성 내에서 매복한 거였고 방심한 적에겐 이걸로 충분했죠. (물론 북쪽을 방비하느라 그만큼 수도 평양에서도 쓸 병력이 적었다는 건 맞겠습니다만) 내호아의 수군은 정말 탈탈 털려서 달아났고, 배로 돌아간 이후에는 다시 오지 못 합니다. 고구려군도 더 공격하진 않았고 말이죠. "내호아의 군사가 패하여서 먼저 물러나지 않았다면 평양성의 바깥에 진영을 치고서 우문술 등의 제군과 달려와 응원하면서 호응하여서 살수에서의 낭패는 당하지 않았을 것이다" - 자치통감 이 의미는 정말 컸습니다. 만약 이들이 육군과 합류할 수 있었다면 보급 문제가 상당 부분 해결될 수 있었을 테니까요. 최소한 평양 앞까지 왔다가 바로 돌아가진 않았겠죠. 살수대첩을 있게 한 전투입니다. -------------------------------------------------------------------- 압록강까지 가는 걸 고구려군이 그냥 두지는 않았습니다. 압록강 근처에 있는 오골성에서 뒷치기를 시도했죠. 우중문은 이걸 예측하고 일부러 약한 말들을 배치해서 유인한 후 격파합니다. 이것만 봐도, 아니 애초에 별동대를 맡은 것만 봐도 우중문이나 우문술의 능력은 충분했습니다. 양제가 바보였고 고구려가 더 훌륭히 막아낸 것일 뿐이죠. 압록강까지 오는 데만 해도 지칠 대로 지친 그들에게 고구려의 거물이 나옵니다. 양제가 영양왕 고원과 함께 언급했던, 온다면 반드시 붙잡으라고 했던 대신 을지문덕이었죠. 을지문덕은 항복하겠다고 한 후 돌아갑니다. 전편에서 썼듯이 (그리고 이후의 상황을 보면 알 수 있듯이) 그냥 항복이 아니라 왕을 데리고 입조하겠다는 거였겠죠. 그러고 돌아가겠다는 을지문덕, 수군의 내부에선 갑론을박이 벌어집니다. 저걸 잡아야 되나 말아야 되나로 말이죠. 우중문은 잡으려 했지만 상서우승(3품?) 유사룡이 말립니다. 사신으로 온 자를 죽이면 안 된다고 말이죠. 이런 걸 보면 수나라의 패인은 대국의 위엄을 지키려는 것도 꽤 큰 걸 알 수 있습니다. 양제부터가 이름이 관대하가 아닐까 싶으니까요. 물론 이 경우는 좀 다르긴 합니다. 예나 지금이나 사신을 죽이면 안 되죠. 사실 사신으로 그리 큰 거물이 올 거라고는 생각도 못 했을 겁니다. 이 때 을지문덕을 잡거나 죽였으면 정황이 바뀌었을까도 재밌는 떡밥이죠. 기록이 부족해서 확신할 순 없지만, 이 정도로 대담한 행동을 한 걸 보면 애초에 자기가 죽더라도 뒷 계획을 다 짜 놓지 않았을까요? 그 짧은 시간에 을지문덕은 수군의 상황을 파악했습니다. 군량도 떨어지고 지쳤다는 것을 말이죠. 우중문은 뒤늦게야 생각을 바꿔 "의논할 게 더 있다"면서 다시 불렀지만 육지로 간 토끼가 돌아올 리가 있겠습니까. 이걸로 확실한 방침이 세워집니다. "장군이 10만의 병력을 거느리고 와서 자그마한 적도 격파하지 못한다면 무슨 낯으로 황제를 뵈옵겠소?" - 우중문 우문술은 상황이 이러니 돌아가자고 했지만 우중문은 거부합니다. 그대로 밀고 나갔죠. 을지문덕은 이걸 파악하고 일곱 번을 일부러 져 줍니다. 이렇게 수군은 압록강을 건너고 청천강을 건너 평양성이 보이는 곳까지 가게 됩니다. 30리, 한국식으로 10리가 4km로 보면 정말 코 앞까지 온 것이었죠. 하지만... 그냥 무작정 달려온 적들이 오랜 역사를 자랑하는 평양성을 공격할 장비가 있었겠습니까. 군량도 없고 수군은 연락도 안 되고 말이죠. 을지문덕은 사자를 보내 철수한다면 왕과 함께 입조하겠다고 합니다. 그리고 사자를 통해 시를 하나 보내죠. 네, 그 유명한 수나라 장수 우중문에게 보내는 시, 여수장우중문시與隋將于仲文詩입니다. 神策究天文 신책구천문 귀신같은 책략은 하늘의 이치를 깨달았고 妙算窮地理 묘산궁지리 신묘한 셈은 땅의 형편을 다하였도다 戰勝功旣高 전승공기고 싸움에 이겨 공이 이미 높으니 知足願云止 지족원운지 원컨대 만족함을 알고 그만두기를 바라노라 +) ... 일베 안 합니다. 병법에서 따지는 것이 세 개 있죠. 하늘과 땅, 사람. 천시, 지리, 인화입니다. 하늘을 알고 땅을 알았다면서 칭찬해 주고, 니가 큰 공을 세웠다면서 띄워 준 겁니다. 하지만 그게 아니라는 걸 모를 리가 없었죠. 정말 반어법의 극한을 보여 준 겁니다. 이런 굴욕을 당하고도 그 말대로 돌아가야 했습니다. 그 정도로 상황이 안 좋았으니까요. 그나마 저 시와 거짓 항복이 명분을 주긴 했습니다. 그게 아니었다면 그들 모두가 고구려 땅에서 뼈를 묻어야 했을 테니까요. 자치통감고이에서는 혁명기라는 책을 인용하며 다른 얘기도 해 줍니다. 고구려군이 성에 항복을 뜻하는 깃발을 꽂고는 5일 후에 지도와 호구 등의 문서를 들고 성문을 열겠다고 했답니다. 하지만 5일이 지난 후에는 싸움을 뜻하는 깃발을 세웠다고 합니다. 10일을 날린 거죠 (...) 그러면서 이렇게 말했답니다. "배와 양식이 모두 패몰되어 수나라 군사들이 모두 돌아갔는데 공은 지금 무엇을 기다리고 있는가?" 저게 맞다면 그 10일도 수나라를 아예 굶어죽이는 좋은 방법이었던 것이죠. 결국 우중문은 싸움을 포기하고 철수합니다. 평양 근처까지 오긴 했지만 얻은 건 아무것도 없었고, 오히려 고구려군의 역공을 걱정해야 했습니다. 우문술은 이걸 생각하고 방진을 치면서 철수했다고 합니다. 단순히 도망친 게 아니라 방어를 튼튼히 하면서 천천히 간 것이죠. 이 정도면 그들도 할 만큼 했습니다. 고구려군이 더 잘 했을 뿐이죠. 고구려군은 그런 수군을 사방에서 찌르면서 피해와 피로를 누적시킵니다. 살수, 청천강에서는 이 진형을 깰 수밖에 없었습니다. 강을 건너야 했으니까요. 고구려군은 이 때를 노립니다. "적이 물을 건너서 오면 적이 물 안에 있을 때 맞서지 말고 절반은 건너게 만들고서 치는 게 이롭다." - 손자병법 행군편 살수대첩이 흔히 수공으로 적을 몰살시킨 전투로 그려지는데 그건 어렵습니다. 단기간에 댐을 쌓아서 적을 쓸어버리는 건 지금도 힐들 거니까요. 만화 창천항로에는 하비성 공략전에서 발목이 담길 정도면 충분하다고 말 합니다. 수공은 그렇게 하는 것이죠. 거대한 물에 다 휩쓸려 갈 정도는 필요 없었습니다. 물살이 조금만 빨라져도 물에 빠지거나 움직이는 게 힘들어 집니다. 그 정도로도 충분했죠. 수군이 강을 절반쯤 건넜을 때, 고구려군이 다시 나타납니다. 이건 도저히 막을 수가 없는 것이었죠. 여기서 수군은 사실상 궤멸당합니다. 남은 이들이 하루만에 압록강까지 도망갔다고 하니 그 후는 그저 도망일 뿐인 걸 알 수 있죠. 물론 그 후에도 계속 공격을 받았을 거고, 요동성까지 겨우 돌아간 이는 불과 2천 7백명이었습니다. 모든 걸 잃고 몸만 돌아간 것이었죠. 그나마 왕안공, 설세웅 등 후방을 맡아 더 큰 피해를 막은 게 보이긴 합니다만 그 정도였죠.  양제는 당연히 분노합니다. 우중문 등 패장들은 묶여서 끌려갔고, 직위를 잃고 일반 백성으로 깎입니다. 을지문덕을 보내주자고 한 유사룡은 참수당했구요. 이렇게 2차 여수전쟁은 고구려의 대승으로 끝이 납니다. 정말 누구도 예측 못 했을 대승이었죠. ----------------------------------------------- "양제의 요동 싸움은 군대를 일으킨 성대함이 예전에 없었던 일이다. 고구려가 한 모퉁이에 있는 조그마한 나라로서 이를 막아내고 스스로를 보전하였을 뿐만 아니라 수의 군사를 거의 다 없앨 수 있었던 것은 문덕 한 사람의 힘이었다. 『좌전』에 이르기를 “군자가 없으면 어찌 나라를 다스릴 수 있으리오?”라고 하였는데 참으로 옳은 말이다. - 김부식 을지문덕은 참 특이한 인물입니다. 살수대첩의 상황을 보면 수나라에서 알 정도의 거물이었는데, 그 출신이 어딘지 알 수 없습니다. 이거야 뭐 이해할 만 한데 더 큰 문제가 있으니, 살수대첩 이후의 상황도 모릅니다. (...) 진짜 살수대첩이 있는 2차 여수전쟁 때 갑툭튀 했다가 바로 사라진 겁니다. 이름도 文德으로 결코 평범한 이름이 아닌데 말이죠 (그래서 아들 이름을 이렇게 위대하게 지어도 되나 - 그럴 만할 인물이 될 거임 하는 전설도 있더군요) 대패했다고 수나라 역사서(수서)에서 묻었다고 하기에도 출신까지 묻어버리는 건 좀 심하죠. 김부식이 관심이 없었던 것도 아닙니다. 삼국사기 열전의 첫째는 판타지 수준인 김유신이고, 그 다음이 바로 을지문덕입니다. 고구려 중에선 맨 처음인 거죠. 위만 봐도 김부식이 그를 얼마나 대단히 여겼는지 알 수 있죠. (백제 쪽으로 처음 나오는 건 의외로 흑치상지네요) 거기다 김부식은 한국측의 기록이 없다면 중국 걸 복붙했지만, 있으면 한국 걸 우선했습니다. 그가 이른바 [구삼국사]도 참고한 걸 생각하면, 당시 고려에서 을지문덕에 대한 기록이 없는 수준이었다고 봐도 될 겁니다. 희한한 일이죠. 물론 후대에 그에 대한 게 있긴 합니다. 평양 출신이라구요(조선 때의 신증동국여지승람). 하지만 신빙성이 떨어질 수밖에 없죠. 이래서 다양한 학설이 나옵니다. 저로서는 그가 아웃라이어(아웃사이더?)로 보는 데 마음이 더 쏠립니다. 그러니까 기록이 없지 않았겠느냐는 거죠. 이에 대한 걸로는 선비족의 [울지]씨 출신이 아니겠냐는 게 있습니다. 이민족 출신이라는 거죠. 여기에 평원왕의 온달과도 엮어서 생각해 볼 수 있습니다. 바보 온달이라고 하는데 진짜 지적장애인이 싸움 잘 한다고 장군이 되었다고 생각하긴 힘들죠. 평원왕이 귀족들을 누르고 고구려의 혼란기를 끝낸 만큼, 온달도 단순 바보가 아닌 평원왕이 아웃라이어들을 끌어들인 대표로 보는 겁니다. 이걸로 보면 온달이 평원왕 죽고 바로 죽령 이북을 되찾겠다면서, 지면 돌아오지 않겠다는 게 충분히 이해가 되거든요. 평원왕의 비호 아래 성장한 만큼, 확실한 전공을 올리지 못 하면 대접 받을 수 없을 테니까요. 온달 얘기가 길었는데 을지문덕도 이런 경우였다면? 평원왕의 정책이 성공해서 정말 높은 곳까지 오른 용이었다면 하는 거죠. 물론 큰 반론은 있습니다. (어차피 결론 안 나는 문제죠) 을파소에서 볼 수 있듯 을씨는 고구려의 귀족 가문이었으니까요. 을지의 지는 존칭어로 보고, 기존의 귀족 가문 출신으로 보는 거죠. 이것도 충분히 설득력이 있습니다. 신라의 골품제에 볼 수 있듯 아무리 잘 나가는 신진세력이라도 그 정도의 자리에 오르긴 힘들 거니까요. 이후의 기록들이야 야사에 전설들이니 뭐 제대로 믿을 수가 없구요. 어떤 사람이었을까요? 기록이 없는 게 안타까울 뿐입니다. 물론 남아 있는 기록만으로도 그가 얼마나 위대한 인물인지 알 수 있지만요. ---------------------------------------------------- 대승을 거뒀지만, 고구려에게 긍정적인 상황만은 아니었습니다. 통일 중국의 가공한 힘을 맛 봤으니까요. 이기기 위해 고구려의 꿀땅인 요동부터 평양까지 청야 전술을 써야 했습니다. 복구하기 쉬운 게 아니었죠. 거기다 작전이라 해도 평양성이 한 번 털렸습니다. 인적 피해는 몰라도 물적 피해는 고구려가 그냥 넘길 수 있는 게 아니었죠. 저 평양성 전투에서 고구려가 적의 입성을 허용한 것부터가 이 전쟁이 얼마나 어려웠는지를 말 해 줍니다. 자세한 기록이 없어서 왜 그랬는지는 알 수 없지만, 어느 쪽으로 분석해도 마찬가지죠. 북쪽에 병력을 쏟느라 정말 소수의 병력밖에 남지 않아서 그랬다면, 실패했어도 수륙협공이 얼마나 효과적이었는지를 말 해 주죠. 병력은 충분했어도 적 육군과의 합류를 막기 위해, 빨리 섬멸하기 위해서 그랬더라도 마찬가지입니다. 이 전쟁은 고구려에게 있어서도 살추뼈취, 살을 주고 뼈를 취한 전쟁이었던 겁니다. 그렇게 수나라의 뼈를 깨뜨렸다기엔, 바로 다음 해에 또 쳐들어 옵니다. 물론 전쟁의 피해는 수나라에도 무시할 수 없는 것이었고, 계속되는 전쟁으로 수나라가 자멸하지만, 통일 중국이 그 정도의 힘을 계속 쏟아부을 수 있다는 것에는 변함이 없죠. 정말 장난이 아닌 전쟁을 이겼습니다. 하지만 그 후의 상황도 정말 장난이 아니었죠. 평양성에서 대승을 거둔 고건무는 영양왕의 동생이고 훗날 영류왕이 됩니다. 전쟁영웅인 그가 당나라에 대해 온건책을 편 걸 보면 이 전쟁에 대한 그의 생각을 알 수 있을 겁니다. 그러다 강경파에 당하지만요. 정말 힘든 전쟁을 이겼지만, 이건 끝이 아니었습니다. 시작일 뿐이었죠.
