 삼국시대의 5세기는 고구려의 전성기와 신라 백제의 살아남기로 요약할 수 있습니다.  광개토대왕은 복수에 성공하고, 백제의 아신왕은 영원한 신하가 되겠다고 맹세합니다. 하지만 아신왕이 그럴 양반이 아니어서 계속 덤볐지만, 다 실패했죠. 고구려 대신 가야와 왜까지 끌어들여서 신라를 공격했지만 여기에도 고구려가 개입했으니... 덕분에 내물 마립간과 신라는 고구려의 도움으로 살아납니다. 이후 고구려는 신라를 속국으로 여겼구요. 하지만 신라는 이걸 거부합니다. 늑대 쫓아내려고 호랑이를 불렀지만, 그대로 먹히긴 싫었죠. 눌지 마립간은 고구려의 지지를 받고 왕위에 올랐지만, 오히려 고구려에게서 벗어나려 했죠. 하지만 그걸 혼자서 할 수 있겠습니까. 백제는 어땠을까요. 그 원한을 잊을 순 없었을 겁니다. 언제든 그 복수를 하려고 벼르고 있었겠죠. 복수를 떠나서 고구려의 힘에 백제 자체가 무너질 수 있는 상황이었구요. 427년, 장수왕은 평양으로 천도합니다. 고구려 입장에서야 척박한 땅 대신에 낙랑군이 있었던, 한반도 최초의 도시라 할 평양으로 옮긴 거지만, 신라와 백제 입장에선 이젠 자존심이고 복수는 둘재 문제였죠. 일단 살아남아야 하니까요.  433년, 눌지 마립간과 비유왕이 동맹을 맺으니 이것이 나제동맹입니다. 개로왕은 이걸 넘어서 북위에도 고구려를 쳐 달라고 국서를 보냅니다. 북위는 5호 16국의 혼란을 끝내고 화북을 통일한 나라입니다. 하지만 고구려가 대놓고 적대한 것도 아니고 국력이나 명분이나 딱히 할 필요가 없었죠. (일단 남조가 먼저였죠) 오히려 이걸 알게 된 장수왕의 어그로를 끌어 버렸으니... 국서를 보낸 3년 후인 475년, 장수왕은 남진해서 개로왕을 죽입니다. 개로왕은 그 전에 아들 문주를 신라로 보내 구원을 청하게 했고 신라의 구원을 받는 데 성공하지만, 그 전에 끝나 버렸죠. 이렇게 백제는 오랜 수도를 잃게 됩니다. 그 이후에도 남진을 계속하지만, 신라나 백제를 끝장내지는 못 했죠. 신라를 공격하면 백제가 도와주고 백제를 공격하면 신라가 도와줬으니... 그렇다고 고구려가 한반도에만 신경쓸 수 있는 상황도 아니었구요. 화북의 통일왕조 북위가 세워진 상황에서 고구려의 좋은 날은 다 갔습니다. 수도가 털린 적이 두 번이나 있는데 그 두 번이 다 서쪽에서 온 거였죠. 남북조에 대한 외교에 많이 신경 썼고, 북위가 고구려를 딱히 적대하지 않았으니 별 일이야 없었지만요. 나제동맹 때문에 그 이상은 힘들었지만, 그래도 광개토대왕-장수왕-문자왕으로 이어지는 5세기는 고구려의 최전성기였죠. 하지만 6세기가 되면서 고구려는 상황이 바뀝니다. 특히 중반이 되면 왕위를 둘러싸고 다툼이 일어나고 반란도 일어나죠. 반면 신라와 백제는 힘을 기르고 있었으니... 500년, 지증 마립간이 즉위합니다. 사로국을 신라로, 마립간을 왕으로 만든 왕이죠. 501년, 무령왕이 즉위합니다. 무덤으로 유명하죠 (...) 백제는 무령왕 - 성왕으로 이어지면서 부흥했고, 신라는 지증왕 - 법흥왕으로 이어지면서 본격적으로 나라다운 모습을 갖추게 되었죠. 그리고 540년, 진흥왕이 즉위합니다. 양국은 반격을 시작합니다. 목표는 백제의 숙원이었던 한강 유역이었죠. 고구려는 내부적으로도 혼란이었을 뿐만 아니라 강성해진 돌궐에 신경을 쓰고 있을 때였습니다. 551년, 양국은 북진, 한강 유역을 점령하는 데 성공합니다. 백제는 하류를, 신라는 상류를 차지했죠. 신라는 죽령으로 대표되는 소백산맥을 넘게 되었고, 백제는 그립던 한성을 되찾은 순간입니다. 성왕은 얼마나 기뻤을까요? 하지만... "느이 신라 xx놈들 554년 옥천 땅에서 우리 고조 할아버지 성왕을 죽여서 어따 묻었어?" 진흥왕은 백제가 있던 한강 하류까지 점령해 버렸죠. 신라의 배신으로 보는 게 보통입니다만, 반론은 있습니다. 내부사정으로 먹어놓고 그 땅을 포기했고, 신라가 그걸 집어먹었다는 것이죠. 일본서기에서 한성을 포기했다는 것, 신라 쪽에서 오히려 성왕이 배신했다고 하는 점 등이 근거입니다. 어느 쪽이든 백제가 별 저항을 할 수 없었던 건 맞겠구요. 성왕은 그러고도 딸을 시집보내는 등 참다가 554년 충북 옥천 관산성을 공격하죠. 왜와 대가야 병력까지 함께 한 공격이었습니다. 하지만... 성왕이 신라군의 기습으로 성왕이 전사하고, 그 기세를 탄 신라군의 기습으로 백제군은 대패하게 되니... 죽은 자만 좌평 넷을 포함한 2만 9천 6백 명이라고 합니다. 좌평은 지금의 장관급으로, 과장이 들어갔다 하더라도 그 후의 상황을 보면 백제가 정말 엄청난 타격을 입은 게 됩니다. 한강 유역을 지키던 병력도 동원한 점, 성왕이 죽은 지 3개월 후 고구려가 백제를 공격한 점, 황초령비에 고구려로 추정되는 나라가 축하한 점 등으로 신라와 고구려의 밀약을 추정하기도 합니다. 만주의 상황 때문에 남쪽을 신경 쓸 수 없으니 차라리 신라와 손 잡는다는 것이죠. 성왕의 한강 포기설과 함께 재미있는 부분입니다. 하지만 삼국에게 한강 유역의 의미가 크니 속단할 순 없는 부분들이죠. 이렇게 나제의 균형은 신라 쪽으로 확 기울어 버렸죠. 신라는 한강 유역이라는 노른자위를 차지했고, 중국과 직접 외교를 할 수도 있게 됩니다. 이후 고구려와 백제의 협공을 받으면서도 끝까지 지켜낼 정도로 중요하게 여겼고, 끝내 승리한 원동력이 되어 주었죠. 이 영향은 남쪽에도 미칩니다. 백제와 신라가 성장하면서 변한 지역에 있던 소국들에게 영향을 주게 됩니다. 네, 가야죠. 가야의 정확한 의미가 무엇인지는 지금도 학설들이 많습니다. 명칭도 가라, 임나 등으로 다양하구요. (누군가에겐 임나라는 말을 썼다는 것만으로도 임나일본부설을 긍정하는 게 되는 모양입니다만. 가야라는 명칭이 고정된 건 고려 때로, 왕건이 이 지역들을 ~가야로 칭했습니다. 가야연맹이 아직 널리 쓰이긴 하지만, 가야제국이 힘을 얻어가고 있죠. 諸國, 여러 나라들이라는 의미입니다. 자기들의 이름을 가지고 독자적으로 행동했다는 것이죠. 금관국, 반파국(대가야)으로 대표되는 강대국들이 있고 이들을 중심으로 움직이긴 했지만 그게 오랜 기간 동안 이루어진 것도 아니고, 오히려 자기들끼리 힙을 합해 강대국인 금관국(혹은 안라국)을 치는 사건도 있었습니다. 포상팔국의 난이라 하는데 신라의 구원으로 이겨냈죠. 이런 식으로 오랜기간 단일맹주를 중심으로 한 운명공동체가 아니었다는 겁니다. 연맹이라는 말을 그대로 쓰는 학자도 이를 부정하지는 않고, 기존과 다른 형태의 연맹설도 나오고 있죠. 이들은 서로 싸우기도 하고 함께 강대국에 의지하기도 하면서 역사를 이어갔습니다. 신라에 붙기도 했지만, 주로 백제와 손 잡은 게 보입니다. 백제의 국력도 국력이겠지만 신라가 낙동강 유역을 노렸으니 그런 거겠죠. 고구려 때문에 백제가 약해지고 신라가 아직 큰 힘을 얻지 못 했을 때는 나름대로 세를 불리기도 했습니다. 신라와 가까운 금관국(금관가야)이야 신라에 밀려 약해졌지만, 고령의 반파국(대가야)는 서쪽으로 전라도에 진출하기도 하고 (다른 소국이 생긴 거라는 주장도 있습니다) 중국에 독자적으로 조공을 하기도 하는 등 힘을 키웠죠. 하지만 6세기가 오면서 상황이 달라지죠. 백제와 신라가 힘을 키우면서 이들을 본격적으로 압박하게 됩니다. 532년, 금관국이 신라에 항복한 게 대표적이죠. 이 시기 신라는 창원까지, 백제는 진주까지 진출했다고 합니다. 반파국은 물론 다른 소국들의 생존에 빨간불이 켜졌죠. 남쪽의 나라들, 특히 함안의 안라국(아라가야)은 왜의 사신을 불러 회의를 엽니다. 고당회의, 안라회의라 불리죠. 왜를 통해 백제와 신라를 견제하려던 거였죠. (임나일본부의 모티프로 추측되는 부분이죠) 이후에도 백제에서 남쪽 7국과 왜의 사신들이 모여 2차례 회의를 합니다. 사비회의라 불리죠. 이걸 통해 자기네의 독립과 신라로부터의 안전보장 등을 요구합니다만, 성왕부터가 가야를 노리고 있었으니... 오죽하면 고구려와 손 잡아서 나제동맹이 고구려군을 막는 독산성 전투도 있었습니다. (...) 이렇게 필사적으로 움직였지만 결국 백제의 영향 아래 놓이게 되었죠. +) 저 안라국은 금관국, 반파국에 밀려 알려지지 않지만, 상당한 강대국이었습니다. 오죽하면 가야사의 권위자인 이영식 교수는 연맹설 최대의 피해자라고 (...) 하고, 백승충 교수는 지역연맹체설로 남쪽의 맹주는 안라국이었다고 주장합니다. 관산성 전투로 백제가 큰 피해를 입으면서 남쪽의 승자도 신라가 됩니다. 진흥왕은 빠르게 가야를 정복했고, 562년 대가야가 신라장군 이사부~♪에게 멸망당하면서 끝이 납니다. 성왕의 뒤를 이은 위덕왕은 이를 막으려 했지만 실패했죠. 이렇게 진흥왕 대에 신라는 크게 발전했고, 한반도의 주도권을 거머쥡니다. 백제는 이제 원수를 고구려에서 신라로 바꾸게 되었구요. 이후 백제와 고구려의 공격에 시달리지만 (화백회의로 폐위된 진지왕-김춘추 할아버집니다-의 뒤를 이은) 진평왕이 이걸 잘 막아내었죠.  "그런데 최근 몇 년간 은밀히 재화를 움직이고 아랫사람들을 이용해서 노수(弩手, 쇠뇌를 쏘는 사수)를 양성하고 병기를 수리하니, 이것은 무엇을 하기 위함인가? "이 같이 모욕적이고 무례한 글에 대해서는 붓으로 답변할 게 아니라 칼로 답변해야 합니다" - 강이식 영양왕은 과감하게 선제공격을 시도합니다. 요서를 1만의 병사로 선제공격한 것이죠. 문제는 이에 분노해 30만 대군으로 고구려를 치니, 598년의 1차 여수전쟁입니다. +) 저기서 나오는 강이식의 존재는 논란의 대상입니다. 수나라에 대한 선제공격을 지휘한(여기선 5만으로 임유관=산해관을 공격했다고 합니다) 진주 강씨의 시조인데, 족보와 신채호의 조선상고사에서밖에 등장하지 않거든요. 신채호가 출처라고 한 사료는 현존하지 않구요. 일단 실존인물로 받아들이긴 하지만요. 이 1차 여수전쟁은 별다른 전투 없이 끝납니다. 수군은 요수=요하까지 왔지만 지치고 병에 걸려서 전쟁도 못 해보고 퇴각합니다. 십에 팔구가 죽었다고 하니 과장이라 해도 큰 피해를 입고 갔다는 걸 알 수 있죠. 영양왕은 타이밍 맞춰서 자신을 요동 분토糞土의 신하라고 해서 명분을 만들어줍니다. 똥밭이라고 생각하면 되는데 그냥 안 좋은 땅이다 뭐 그렇게 받아들이면 되겠습니다. 이후 문제는 고구려를 달랠 생각으로 까칠해지기 전처럼 대했죠. 이 때문에 고구려가 일부러 유리할 때(여름) 어그로를 끈 게 아닌가 하기도 합니다. 이렇게 수나라와 잘 살길 바랐겠지만, 그 아들놈이 참 막 나가는 놈이었으니... 백제와 신라에겐 참 아쉬운 순간이었습니다. 위덕왕은 수가 고구려를 친다니 잘 됐다고 사신 보내서 고구려를 깠지만 안 됐죠. 그 후에 다시 사신을 보내서 자신들이 지원하겠다고 했지만, 문제는 "이미 용서했다"면서 거부합니다. (...) 그걸 알게 된 영양왕은 백제를 공격했구요. 나름 여유가 생겼으니(영양왕 즉위년에 온달이 신라 공격하다 죽습니다) 신라도 공격했죠. 백제와 신라는 고구려가 중국에 신경쓸수록 좋았습니다. 이제 고구려를 공격할 능력은 물론 의지가 있으니 매달릴 수밖에요. 신라의 경우는 문제의 아들 양제에게 고구려를 공격해 달라고 빕니다. 이게 진평왕 때 원광이 쓴 걸사표죠. 이렇게 6세기가 끝납니다. 참 다사다난했죠. 나제동맹은 끝이 났고, 신라와 백제는 원수가 됐습니다. 가야는 없어졌죠. 그리고 중국에는 4백여년만에 초강대국, 슈퍼파워가 재림합니다. 중국의 여느 통일왕조가 그랬듯, 요동에 강력한 나라가 있는 걸 싫어하는 나라들이었죠. 7세기는 6세기보다 더 했습니다. 아예 시대를 바뀌게 됩니다. 그리고 한반도에 있는 한민족의 나라, 이런 정체성이 만들어진 시작이 7세기였습니다. 절대 빼놓을 수 없는 세기죠.
