| Subject | 러일전쟁 - 쓰시마 해전 |
 해협은 육지 사이의 바다를 말합니다. 대한 해협은 국제적으로는 왼쪽은 대한 해협 서수로(Korea Strait Western Channel), 오른쪽은 쓰시마, 전체는 대한 해협으로 부릅니다. 한국에서는 우리쪽은 부산이라 하고, 일본에선 조선이라고 부르고 전체를 쓰시마 해협이라고 하구요. 오른쪽을 현해탄이라고도 부르는데 그 범위가 일치하진 않구요. 이렇게 쓰시마섬 근해의 쓰시마 해협에서 일어난 해전이라 쓰시마 해전이라 부릅니다. 한국에선 대한해협 해전이라고 하기도 하는데 6.25 때도 있어서 별로 안 쓰이죠. 일본의 공식명칭은 일본해 해전입니다. 보시다시피 전투의 범위가 동해까지 넓게 퍼져 있죠. 그도 그렇겠지만, 국제적으로 보면 애초에 쓰시마 해협도 일본해입니다. 정확히 말하면, 국제적으로 남해는 없어요. 제주도 서쪽은 황해고 동쪽은 일본해, 남쪽은 동중국해거든요. 동해-일본해 문제에서 우리가 알아둬야 할 부분입니다. 동해를 밀려면 국제적으로는 남해도 동해로 밀어야 해요. 일본에서 이거 가지고 한국 까구요. -_-; 자기들이 주장하는 바다 범위도 제대로 모르냐고. +) 그렇다고 일본에서 남해를 일본해로 부르냐 하면 그건 또 아닙니다. 국제적으로야 그렇다 하겠지만 걔네도 국내에선 대한 해협 정도로 끝이에요. 남해는 동중국해의 일부로 여깁니다. ... 이건 이거대로 기분 나쁘네요 이래서 한국에서도 동해 해전이라고 하기도 하는데, 역시 많이 쓰이는 건 쓰시마 해전이죠. 대마도 해전이란 말은 딱히 못들어봤네요. -------------------------------------------------- 금적금왕, 적을 잡으려면 왕을 잡아라. 부연설명이 필요없을 정도의 진리죠. 대장이 안전한 후방에 있는 지상전과 달리 해상전에선 대장선인 기함이 선두에 섰습니다. 배가 작을 때라면 몰라도 대형함끼리 붙을 때는 말이죠. 대포가 발달해도 배는 쉽게 깨지지 않고, 기함인만큼 공격력과 방어력이 함대에서 최강이었으니 더 그랬습니다. 배끼리 연락하기 힘들었던 시대에 기함이 맨 앞에서 싸워줘야 지휘하기도 좋고 사기에도 좋았죠. 기함이 그냥 뒤로 빠져도 후퇴로 착각해서 전투에 패할 정도였습니다. 범선 시대엔 일자로 장사진으로 싸우는 게 기본이라서 기함이라고 집중공격 하기 힘들었구요. 물론 그래도 기함을 집중공격하는 시도를 했습니다. 역시 쉽진 않았죠. 범선 시대엔 포위공격하기 힘들어서 정말 잘 되거나 아예 백병전을 시도해야 했고, 기선 시대에 들어선 철갑을 둘러서 대포로 뚫을 수 없었으니까요. 청일전쟁 때 정원과 진원은 해전에서 남들 다 죽어도 침몰하지 않고 탈출했고, 러일전쟁 때 미카사도 모든 해전에서 많이 두들겨 맞았지만 버텨냈습니다. 그래도 어쩌나요. 계속 시도해야죠. 청일전쟁 때 황해 해전의 승인 중 하나가 초반에 정여창이 부상당한 거였습니다. 아무리 방어력이 강해도 사람은 약하니까 기함을 집중공격하면 지휘를 무력화시킬 가능성이 높아집니다. 기선 시대니까 범선 때보다야 집중공격하기 쉬웠구요. 일본 해군은 이미 마인 대박을 한 번 했습니다. 마카로프가 기뢰에 죽지 않았다면 해전이, 전쟁이 어떻게 진행됐을지 모릅니다. 이거야 운빨이 컸지만, 일본 해군은 계속 기함을 노리는 연구를 계속합니다. 그게 T자, 혹은 丁자 전법이죠. 적의 선두를 아군의 다수가 포격하니 화력집중이 쉽고, 적의 후속함은 멀어서 아군을 공격하기 힘드니 아군의 피해가 줄어듭니다. 이렇게 오는 순서대로 깨뜨리니 아군의 피해를 최소화할 수 있죠. 정말 이상적인 전법입니다. 하지만 이게 좋은 걸 누가 모르겠습니까. 어려우니 못 했죠. 입해전이라고 할까요. +) 대항해시대 4에서 포격전을 해보면 그냥 이해가 갈 겁니다. 희한하게 게임에선 뒷배부터 잡지만요. 일본 해군은 황해 해전에서 이미 이걸 시도했습니다. 하지만 러시아군도 필사적으로 도망치면서 잘 되지 않았죠. 결국 여기서도 계속 싸워서 비프게프트를 비롯한 지휘부를 잡고 승리하긴 했습니다. 하지만 역시 이론과 실전은 다르다는 걸 알 수 있었죠. +) 쓰시마 해전에서도 T자 전법은 없었다, 언플이다는 주장도 계속 나오는 모양입니다. 사네유키 등 해전의 당사자들은 그런 말이 없었고, 해전 직후 신문에서 처음으로 나왔다고 하네요. 이 글에서는 통설대로 쓰겠습니다. 선두를 집중공격했다는 것엔 이견이 없습니다.  그리고 다시 러시아의 대함대와 마주쳤습니다. 이번엔 성공해야 했죠. 13시 55분, 도고는 적의 앞을 가로막기 위해 U턴을 시도합니다. 정확히는 α 형태였다고 합니다. 그 후속함들도 마찬가지였죠. 이렇게 기동하는 15분 동안 적의 공격을 그대로 맞아야 했습니다. 러시아군도 이걸 알고 급히 포격하려 했지만 제대로 되지 않았죠. 일본군의 의도를 파악하고 우회전해서 피하려고 했지만, 늦었습니다. 이렇게 도고의 턴을 시작할 때 기함에 올려진 것이 Z기, "황국의 흥망이 이 전투에 달려 있다. 각자 최선을 다하라"는 내용을 담은 깃발이었습니다. 러시아군은 2개의 단종진으로 이루어져 있었습니다. 일본군은 선두의 두 척을 노렸죠. 기함 수보로프와 오슬랴바였습니다. 그리고 15시경, 수보로프는 전투력을 상실, 전열에서 이탈합니다. 로제스트벤스키도 포탄에 부상을 당했죠. 작전이 성공한 겁니다. 이후 그는 수뢰정으로 옮겨집니다. 그리고 비슷한 시각 오슬랴바는 침몰합니다.  이건 N자, 혹은 乙자 전법이라 부른다는군요. 남은 함대는 어떻게든 계속 도망치려 했지만 속도에서 밀렸습니다. 일본 전함은 14노트의 속도를 낼 수 있었지만 러시아측은 빨라야 11노트, 그것도 그동안의 문제와 일본의 길막으로 제 속도를 내지 못 합니다. 일본군은 계속 앞을 가로막으면서 선두의 적을 노립니다. 전함 알렉산더 3가 그 다음이었고, 그 뒤를 이어 보로디노가 집중포격을 맞았죠. 이렇게 19시경까지 신형전함 5척 중 4척을 격침당합니다. 러시아 함대의 주력이 가라앉은 것이죠. 다행히 19시가 넘으면서 일본군 주력이 물러납니다. 살아남은 러시아 함대는 다시 블라디보스토크로 달렸죠. 하지만 그게 끝이 아니었습니다. 이들을 공격하기 위해 수뢰정 60척이 움직이기 시작했습니다. 러시아군은 불을 끄고 달렸고, 이 때문에 적을 못 찾은 수뢰정도 나왔고 서로 부딪히기도 했습니다. 하지만 이 공격 역시 유효해서 불을 켰던 전함 나바린을 침몰시키고 전함 시소이 벨리키와 다른 순양함들에 피해를 줍니다. 그리고 다음 날, 다시 모두가 나서서 러시아군을 추격, 섬멸합니다. 러시아군도 치열하게 싸웠지만, 상대가 될 수 없었죠. 자침도 잇따랐습니다. 바다 한가운데에서 한 배도 있었고, 울릉도에 상륙하고 배만 가라앉히기도 했죠. 러일전쟁사에서는 그렇게 수병들은 영웅적으로 싸웠고, 명중탄은 러시아가 더 많이 냈다고 위안합니다. 정신승리 느낌이 나긴 하죠. 28일 10시경, 로제스트벤스키에 이어 지휘를 맡고 있던 네보가토프가 항복합니다. 그리고 17시경, 로제스트벤스키가 타고 있던 수뢰정이 항복하죠. 이렇게 최고사령관까지 일본군에 잡히게 됩니다. 이렇게 쓰시마 해전은 끝이 납니다. 37척에 달했던 대함대 중 블라디보스토크에 도착한 건 순양함 1척과 수뢰정 2척 뿐이었습니다. 여기에 순양함 한 척이 근처에서 난파됐는데 러시아에선 이것도 도착한 걸로 쳐줬습니다. 격침되거나 자침한 군함이 전함 6척을 포함해 21척, 나포된 군함이 전함 2척 포함 6척이었습니다. 여기에 반대로 도망가서 중립항에 입항, 억류된 게 6척이었습니다. 그 외에 수송선 등 비전투함들도 침몰하거나 항복, 중립항에서 억류되는 등의 운명을 겪었죠. 전사자만 4830명, 포로는 6106명이었습니다. +) 특이한 걸로는 석탄수송선인 아나디르가 있는데, 무려 마다가스카르까지 도망칩니다. (...) 일본의 피해는 수뢰정 3척과 전사자 117명이었습니다. 그 외에 기함 미카사가 가장 많이 피해를 입었고 다른 배들도 피해를 입긴 했지만, 러시아의 피해에 댈 것이 아니었죠. 이 날은 니콜라이 2세가 대관식을 한 날이었습니다. 이런 기념일에 패했기에 충격은 더 컸겠죠. 그리고 일본은 이 결정적인 승리를 기념해, 해군기념일로 삼습니다. ---------------------------------------------------- 마음놓고 쉴 곳도 없이 지구의 반바퀴를 돌아온 발트 함대, 푹 쉬면서 기다리고 있었던 연합함대, 가는 길에 해협이 있어서 제약될수밖에 없었던 선택... 일본이 유리할 수밖에 없는 상황이었습니다. 문제는 어떻게 이렇게 완벽한 승리를 할 수 있느냐는 거였습니다. 함포가 나온 이후에도 배는 쉽게 침몰시킬 수 없었습니다. 임진왜란 때 그 작은 일본배들도 화포로 깨부수고 불화살을 한참 쏘거나 직접 가서 불을 질러야 했죠. 터지지 않는 포탄으로는 무력화도 힘들었습니다. 서양에서 함포전으로 유명한 칼레 해전도 포격 자체는 별 피해 없었고 그 후에 화공선 + 악천후로 인한 피해가 대부분이었습니다. 고폭탄이 발명된 후에는 나았지만, 군함의 크기는 더 커졌고 철갑을 두르면서 방어력도 더 커졌죠. 탄약고를 제대로 때리는 수준이 아니면 침몰은 힘들었습니다. 이래서 충각이 다시 등장한 거였구요. 무엇보다 밀리면 도망가면 그만이었습니다. 그리고 전함간의 포격전도 쉽게 볼 수 없었습니다. 비싸니까요. 대항해시대 때도 강력한 전열함 대신 기동성 있는 프리깃이 주로 나섰고, 어뢰 대박이 가능해지면서 수뢰정, 구축함 등 작은 배들을 먼저 보냈죠. 쓰시마 해전에서도 처음에 수뢰정을 보내려 했지만, 해협의 물살이 거세서 못 했습니다. 이후에도 전함은 최대한 아꼈죠. 쉽게 가라앉진 않지만, 괜히 나섰다가 다쳐서 수리하러 가면 공백이 크니까요. 마치 핵무기처럼, 그 자리에 있는 것만으로 효과가 있다고 할까요. 세계에서 쓰시마 해전에 주목한 이유는 이겁니다. 전함을 포함한 대함대가 서로 부딪쳐서 전례 없던 포격전을 벌인 거였습니다. 유틀란트 해전까지 세계 최대 규모의 해전이었죠. 그리고 거기서 한 쪽이 압도적인 승리를 거뒀습니다. 그것도 동양의 원숭이 일본이 말이죠. 세계가 놀랄수밖에 없는 결과였습니다. 일본은 이 해전을 위해서 모든 노력을 다 했습니다. 온갖 무리를 다 해서 영국의 최신형 전함을 산것부터가 시작이었죠. 이후 곳곳에 망루를 깔고 해저케이블을 깔아서 러시아군의 동태를 살피고 영국 등에게서 빠르게 정보를 얻어냅니다. 당시 최신기술이던 무선도 빠르게 도입, 전쟁 직전에 국산화 해서 보급했죠. +) 야기 우다 안테나라는, 1926년에 일본인 공학자에 의해 만들어진 안테나가 있었습니다. TV 안테나 생각하면 됩니다. 영미는 이걸로 좋은 레이더를 만들었는데, 정작 일본에선 이걸 무시했죠. 무선기술이나 정찰 등도 경시했구요. 함포도 일본이 러시아보다 평균적으로 사거리와 연사력 등이 더 좋았고, 일본이 개발한 시모세 화약이 좋은 활약을 합니다. 마찬가지로 일본이 개발한 이주인 신관과 함께 썼는데, 관통력은 떨어졌지만 잘 탔다고 합니다. 장갑이 약한 부분에선 러시아 게 그냥 뚫고 나간다면 일본 건 거기서 폭발했구요. +) 단점이 있다면 둘 다 너무 민감해서 자폭하기 쉬웠다는 것... 역시 일본무기다 싶습니다. 2차대전 때 연합함대를 이끈 야마모토 이소로쿠가 이 해전에 참전해서 손가락 두 개를 잃는데, 이 자폭 때문이었다고 합니다. 여기에 대량생산이 안 돼서 수공업이었다네요 (...) 여기에 일본군은 일제사격을 했습니다. 이전에는 다양한 구경의 함포를 실어 각자 쏘게 했는데, 그 대신 중앙의 통제 하에 최대한 한번에 사격하게 한 것이죠.  영국의 재키 피셔 제독은 이 전훈을 연구해 새로운 전함에 응용합니다. 최대한 큰 구경으로 통일해 일제사격을 하는 거였죠. 이렇게 1906년, 전함의 시대를 바꾼 드레드노트함이 등장합니다. 이후 열강은 거함거포주의, 최대한 큰 배에 최대한 큰 포를 놓는 사상에 빠져듭니다. 쓰시마 해전이 시대발전(?)에 나름의 역할을 한 거죠.. 한편 러시아 군함은 프랑스식 텀블홈 구조를 가지고 있었습니다. 영국식인 일본 군함에 비해 무게중심이 위라서 침몰하기 쉬웠죠. 여기에 러시아 함대는 석탄 등을 과적하고 있었고, 복원력이 더 떨어지게 됩니다. 반면 일본군은 전투 시작 전에 남는 석탄은 버렸습니다. 이렇게 피아의 장단이 뚜렷한 상황에서 일본군이 빠른 기동력을 통해 다수의 함선이 단일목표에 화력을 집중했죠. 이것이 완벽한 승리를 거둘 수 있는 요인이었습니다. ----------------------------------------------- 이후 일본군은 함대결전사상에 빠져듭니다. 한타 싸움에 이기면 전쟁에 이긴다, 바로 이기진 않더라도 제해권을 가지고 전쟁을 주도할 수 있다는 겁니다. 틀린 말은 아니고, 다른 나라에서도 주목했습니다. 하지만 일본은 그 정도가 심했죠. 쓰시마 해전은 그 좋은 근거가 되어줬습니다. 하지만 해전의 역사로 보면 쓰시마 해전이 오히려 특이케이스입니다. 전쟁은 이미 일본에 유리해져 있었고, 발트 함대는 러시아가 할 수 있는 마지막 카드였거든요. 당장 그게 안 된다는 걸 보여준 게 2차대전의 일본군입니다. 전쟁 말 결전이라 할 해전들이 있었지만, 일본은 거기에 다 패하고도 전쟁을 끝내지 않았습니다. 오히려 자폭 공격이라는 미친 작전을 세웠죠. 만약 발트 함대가 중국이나 한반도에 다른 기지를 세울 수 있었다면 상황이 달라졌을 겁니다. 하지만 발트 함대는 블라디보스토크로밖에 갈 수 없었죠. 이렇게 한 것 자체가 일본의 의도였지만, 역시 언제나 그렇게 될 순 없었죠. 쓰시마 해전처럼 적이 원하는 곳으로 예쁘게 들어올 가능성은 적었습니다. 안되겠다 싶으면 도망가면 그만이니까요. 유틀란트 해전에서 독일군이 그랬고, 미군도 일본군도 불리하면 그냥 도망갔죠. 이런 함대결전사상 때문에 일본군의 (많고 많은) 문제 중 하나가 나옵니다. 모든 무기를 결전에 최적화한 거죠. 한번에 끝낸다 생각하기에 보급, 수리 등의 문제도 경시했구요. 여기에 결전에 대비한다고 그 유명한 야마토를 그리도 아꼈습니다. 결국 똥 됐죠. 여기엔 기름 문제도 컸지만요. ----------------------------------------------- 러시아 최강의 발트 함대가 사라졌습니다. 일본은 물론 영국에게도 최고의 순간이었죠. 러시아에게 남은 건 흑해에 있는, 지중해로 나가지도 못하는 함대뿐이었습니다. 러시아가 해외로 뻗어나갈 힘이 완전히 사라진 것이죠. 한번 무너진 해군은 쉽게 복구하지 못 합니다. 러시아 해군이 제대로 복구되는 건 2차대전이 끝난 후였습니다. 반세기나 지난 후에 말이죠. 만약 발트 함대가 살아남는 것은 물론 일본 해군을 이겼다면, 역사가 어떻게 바뀌었을지 모릅니다. 전쟁까지 이겼다면 국내의 혁명을 가라앉힐수도 있고, 이후의 혁명도 막을 수 있었을지도 모릅니다. 공산혁명의 역사를 바꿀 수 있었던 거죠. 그리고 러시아 해군이 살아있다면 영국과의 관계도 달라졌을수도 있구요. 역시 1차대전의 형태를 바꿀 수도 있었습니다.
