0. 서론 : 대기업과 중소기업의 갈림길 연봉은 매년 연봉상승률을 플러스 값으로 스노우볼처럼 굴러갑니다. 그렇기에 첫 시작을 어느 정도 연봉이 보장되는 대기업에서 시작하는 것은 상당히 중요하죠. 하지만 불행히도 누구나 대기업에 가는 것은 아닙니다. 빠르면 대학교 4학년 1학기부터 취업을 준비하여, 재학 중에 취업에 성공하면 좋지만, 취업에 성공하지 못한채로 졸업한다면 결정해야 합니다. '나는 00개월 안에, ㅇㅇㅇ 정도 규모의 기업 취업에 도전하고, 실패할 경우 눈을 낮추겠다.' 낙방의 고배를 마시며 스펙을 올리는 것은 쉬운 일이 아닙니다. 시간은 취업준비생의 편이 아니고, 시간이 지날수록, 일하지 않는 동안 어떻게 시간을 보냈는지 물어보는 면접관의 질문에 대답하는 것도 쉬운 일은 아니구요. 고시나 전문직을 준비하듯이 개인의 목표를 정하고 실패할 경우 과감하게 눈을 낮추는 것이 필요합니다. 패배감이 지속되면, 최소한의 근로의욕 또한 사라지고 더 안 좋은 결과를 맞이할 수 있습니다. 1. 중소기업 고르는 법 1-1 원하는 산업군과 직무가 없을 경우 많이 성숙되고 변화가 없는 산업군과 직무 대신, 변화가 극심한 산업군을 선택하세요. 그런 곳일수록 더 나은 조건으로 상승할 여지가 많으니까요. 더 직접적으로 말하면, IT가 유리합니다. 중공업이나 다른 산업군에 비해, 중소기업직원이 대기업가고, 대기업직원이 고연봉을 받고 스타트업으로 가는 경우가 많아요. 개발을 모른다면 운영이나 기획업무로 시작하세요. 다만 다른 분야에 비해 취미로 시작한 열정러들이 많으니 그들과 경쟁할 각오를 하시는 것이 좋습니다. 패스트캠퍼스나 클래스101을 본다면 요새는 기획자를 위한 실무 강의가 많아, 비전공자도 어필할 요소가 있습니다. 멀리보면 Coursera 같은 곳에서 PM 강의를 들어도 되구요. 하고 싶은 산업과 직무를 선택하시면, 1-2로 넘어갑시다. 1-2. 원하는 산업군과 직무, 더 명확하게는 회사가 있을 경우 자신이 정말 관심있는 분야가 아닌 이상 좋은 중소기업을 고르는 것은 어려운 일입니다. 이 경우에 자신을 경력 2-6년차로 가정하고, 가고 싶은 회사와 직무의 채용공고를 보세요. 그리고 2-6년 뒤에 자신이 이 회사를 간다고 가정하고, 어떤 중소기업을 가는 것이 좋을지 조사를 해봅시다. 조사 방법은 ① 그 회사 그 직무에 있는 직원의 링크드인을 하나씩 확인하여, 경력내에 중소기업이 있나 확인해보고, 그 기업에 신입이나 주니어 채용 공고가 있나 확인해봅니다. 그 중소기업에 입사할 수록 원하는 기업에 이직할 확률이 높겠죠? 그런데 이직과 취업은 운이 중요한지라 그 중소기업 경력이 있다 해도, 꼭 그 경력이 원하는 기업으로 연결되진 않아요. 링크드인으로 DM을 보내서 조언을 요청해봅니다. ② 경력직 채용 공고내 직무 필수 및 우대 사항을 확인하고, 필수 및 우대 사항을 충족시켜줄 수 있는 중소기업을 조사하여 지원합니다. ①. ②를 통해, 해당 기업의 정보를 주기적으로 수집하고, 조사합시다. 중소기업도 아무나 채용하지 않아요. 이러한 조사로 얻은 지식은 서류 및 면접 합격에 큰 도움이 될 것입니다. 채용 공고 유무를 확인해보고, 공고가 없다면, 회사 홈페이지의 메일로 이력서와 자기소개서를 보내는 용기도 내봅시다. 밑져야 본전이니까요. 2. 고액 연봉의 길은 중소기업에도 있다. 2-1. 나는 뱀의 머리가 될 수 있는 사람인가? 대기업에 갈뻔한 인재였기에 나는 중소기업을 하드캐리할 인재가 될 수 있을까요? 답은 No입니다. 입사 초창기부터 프로젝트를 주도해 모든 노하우나 정보가 머릿속에 가득 들어있는 사람, 타고난 친화력으로 엄청난 영업력을 지닌 사람 등 자신의 능력이 회사 내에서 대체불가하다 생각하는 사람에게는 중소기업이 대기업보다 더 나은 정답이 될 수 있습니다. (저처럼 머리는 될 수 없지만 어디서든 중간 이상은 될 수 있겠다는 어정쩡한 자신감을 가진 사람들은 어떻게든 자주 이직해서 더 좋은 곳으로 이직하시기 바랍니다. ㅠㅠ) 실제로 제가 중소기업에서 귀여운 월급에 하루하루 고통 받고 있을 때, 살아 있는 wiki 같은 존재가 회사 내에 있었습니다. 이직 후 들었던 얘기로는 그분은 매년 연봉 협상 때, 2-3000씩 올렸다는 얘기였구요. 눈치와 돌아가는 분위기로 내가 그런 존재라는 걸 확인하는 게 베스트지만, 확답을 얻고 싶다면, 회사에 퇴사 선언을 해보세요. 돈 들고서 회사가 퇴사를 만류한다면, 당신의 능력은 입증 된 것입니다. 그리고 가져야 하는 것은 2-2. 겸손은 사적인 영역에서만 공적인 영역에서 당당함입니다. 겨우 사원, 대위 따리라면 당연히 겸손해야 하는 거 아닌가? 라고 생각하지 마시기 바랍니다. 내가 대체 불가가 되는 순간, 협상의 주도권은 자신이 쥘 수 있습니다. '겸손해야 한다.', '회사라는 공동체가 우선 아니냐?'는 얘기는 쓰레기통에 버리십시오. 법인은 자연인보다 우선이 될 수 없으며, 대부분의 중소기업 대표와 임원들은 회사 사정과 무관하게 고액연봉에 외제차를 끌고다니는 탐욕러들입니다. 능력껏 당당하고, 능력껏 연봉을 받으세요. 대체불가가 될 수 없는 저는 IT 보부상이 되어 2년에 한번씩 이직을 했지만요 ㅠㅠ 저 같은 분들은 3번부터 보시면 됩니다. 3. 다닐만함의 함정에 빠지지 말자. 중소기업에 입사한 지, 2년이 지났습니다. 이제 업무도 손에 익었고, 업무에 두려움은 없습니다. 개짜증나던 서차장도 나를 자주봐서 그런지 나를 덜 갈구는 거 같아요. 일이 좋진 않지만 친한 동료들과 술한잔 마시면 그래도 버틸만 한 거 같아요. 이직 하실 타이밍입니다. 차장이 넘어가면 특수한 경우가 아닌 이상, 연봉 상승률도 미미해지고, 이직시 연봉 상승률도 보통은 줄어들어요. 사원말~과장때까지 시간은 조금이라도 허투로 보내선 안됩니다. 귀여운 연봉에 만족한다면 얘기가 다르긴 하지만, 앞으로 좋은 스마트폰도 사고, 차도 사려면 (집은 못 사겠더라구요.) 부지런히 이직 하세요. 회사에서 연봉을 많이 쳐주는 2번의 케이스가 아니라면 부지런히 이직 하세요. (직군의 특성, 산업 및 직무군의 인맥풀의 경우에 따라 이 조언은 맞지 않을 수도 있습니다.) 4. 이직할 회사를 어떻게 고를까? 4-1. 스토리나 일관성을 주도적으로 만들자. 대부분은 의도치 않게 자연스럽게 자신의 커리어가 결정됩니다. 이직하다보니 쇼핑몰 회사만 가서 쇼핑몰에 특화가 되고, 이직하다보니 지도나 네비게이션 회사만 가게 되서, 지도 관련 업무에 특화가 됩니다. 우연이 아닙니다. 채용 공고를 낸다면, 모두들 즉시 전력감을 원하기에 비슷한 동종업계 구직자를 당연히 선호하게 됩니다. 문제는 그렇게 만들어간 커리어의 도메인이 회사풀도 적고 미래가 보장되지 않는다면, 나의 능력치와 무관하게 나의 삶도 상승세를 타기 어렵습니다. 커리어가 쌓일 수록 나의 도메인을 변경하는 것이 어렵습니다. 연차가 낮을수록 적극적으로 나의 영역을 선택하세요. 그 영역에 맞는 회사의 프로젝트를 더 적극적으로 수행하고, 그에 맞춰 이직할 회사를 고르세요. 4-2. 재무제표를 보고 기업을 고르자. 기왕이면 다홍치마라고, 재무적 성과가 좋은 곳을 이직하는 것이 좋습니다. 사업이 성장세라 사람이 필요해서 채용 공고를 올리는 곳과 모두가 도망쳐서 당장 일할 사람이 필요해 채용 공고를 올리는 곳은 확실히 다릅니다. 스톡옵션이나 우리사주를 노릴 수 있는 특수한 경우를 제외한다면, 지금보다 더 큰 매출/ 큰 영업이익을 내는 회사로 이직하는 것을 권장드립니다. 3개년간 매출이 상승세이면서 영업이익을 내는 곳이면 더 좋구요. 경우에 따라선 영업 손실 중이지만, 많은 투자를 통해 엄청나게 매출을 끌어올리는 곳이 있다면 이런 기업도 좋습니다. (워라밸을 보장 받기 어려울 수 있습니다.) 4-3. 링크드인을 하자. 잡플래닛이나 블라인드를 통해 이직할 회사나 동종 엽계 현황을 확인하는 것은 기본이고, 링크드인을 적극적으로 사용합시다. ① 주기적인 업데이트를 통해, 관심 분야의 소식이나 생각을 업데이트 합시다. 자기소개서로 관심사를 어필하는 것보다, 이직 1년전에 올린 포스팅이 관심이나 이력의 진정성을 담을 수 있어요. ② 링크드인 업적을 달성할 수 있는 스펙을 올려봅시다. 앞서도 Coursera 얘기가 나왔지만, 학점인정은 되지 않아도 강의 수강 인증을 받을 수 있는 수업들이 있습니다. 인증받을 수 있는 해외자격증도 있구요. 관심사와 노력을 어필해봅시다. 0. 마무리 쓰고보니 IT 한정적인 조언이 많은 것 같습니다. 좁은 식견에 사과드리며(?), 다른 산업군의 조언은 댓글을 참고해주시기 바랍니다(?)
