방을 치우다가 유물을 하나 발견했습니다. 아이젠전기의 DAP라는 것인데요. (요즘 말하는 DAP와는 다른 용례인 것 같습니다..) 무려 64MB의 메모리에 패럴렐 포트로 연결하는 mp3 플레이어입니다. 심심해서 1.5V 배터리를 끼워봤더니 동작을 합니다. 게다가 집안 구석에 있는 windows XP 컴퓨터의 패럴렐 포트에 물려보니 심지어 데이터 전송도 됩니다! 그리고 그것으로 음악을 들어 보고 깜짝 놀랐습니다. 잃어버린 음악의 꿈을 다시 찾은 느낌이라고 할까요? 저 녀석 이후에 삼성, iOPS, 코원, 아이리버 등 다양한 mp3 플레이어를 썼었습니다. (그러나 주머니 사정으로 고급모델은 아니고 중저가 모델을 썼습니다.) 그 이후에는 주로 삼성 휴대폰으로 음악을 들었고, 지금은 LG V20을 씁니다. 그런데 색깔빠진 모니터처럼 맛없고 밍밍한 음악이 나와서 제 나이와 망가지는 귀 탓으로 생각했었는데, 저 유물 DAP에 mx400 짝퉁 이어폰을 끼웠더니 예전의 느낌이 살아나더군요. LG V20은 음악 성능을 강화했다고 해서 기대했었는데, HiFi DAC 켜고 번들이어폰으로 들었을 때 왠지 핀란드식 한증막에 앉아있는 갑갑함이 느껴져서 실망하고 아무 이어폰이나 꽂은 다음 대충 듣고 있었습니다. 근데 유물 DAP는 안좋은 코덱으로 인코딩하고 비트레이트도 떨어지는 옛날 mp3 파일도 따뜻한 느낌으로 아티팩트를 부드럽게 감싸주는 것 같더군요. 그리고 3D 이펙트도 없는 것 같은데 스테레오 분리가 잘 되면서 입체감이 굉장히 좋습니다. 리버브가 살짝 들어가는 느낌도 드는데 자연스럽고, 일부러 울린다는 느낌은 아닙니다. (소리가 끝날 때 울리는 느낌은 별로 없습니다.) 하긴 당시에 기능도 떨어지고 디자인도 투박했지만 유럽에서 무슨 상을 받았다는 기사를 읽은 것도 같습니다. 하지만 배터리를 끼워 두면 이틀이면 끝나고 작은 용량에 데이터 옮기기 매우 귀찮은 것은 엄청난 단점입니다. 최근에 고가의 DAP가 많이 발매되고 있는데, 제 생각엔 극한의 HiFi를 추구한다면 저 옛날 mp3 파일의 거친 음색이 더 흉해질 것 같은 생각이 듭니다. V20에서 그랬듯이요.. 저 유물 DAP처럼 좀 안좋게 인코딩된 mp3까지 부드럽고 따뜻하게 울려주는, 그런 mp3 플레이어가 혹시 있을까요?
