문득 완벽하게 성공한 기업이 어떻게 완벽하게 망할 수 있는 지 의문이 들었습니다. 아이리버와 스카이 정도면, 기술력/상품성/마케팅/브랜드 가치 등 애플 부럽지 않은 경이로운 수준의 탄탄한 기업이라고 생각했거든요. 요즘 시대처럼 훨씬 작은 규모의 여러 스타트업들도 나름 대로의 성공을 꾸준히 이어나가는 사례에 비해서, 아이리버와 스카이는 지나치다 싶을 정도로 깨끗하게 망했습니다. 무슨 이유일까요? 제 기억으로는 한창 때의 아이리버의 오프라인 매장은 요즘 애플 오프라인 매장에서 느끼는 그런 느낌과 유사했습니다. 아이리버 오프라인 매장에는 항상 무료 음료수와 최신 아이리버 제품이 여러 대 있었기에 즐거운 기억이자 몹시 특별한 기억(당시에는 이런 느낌의 매장은 한국에는 유일하지 않았나 싶습니다.)으로 남아있죠. 추억보정인지는 몰라도 제가 생각하는 이러한 기기를 만드는 기업 중에서 아이리버와 스카이에 비해, 삼성, LG는 뭐랄까 아저씨 감성같아서 비교하는 것이 아이리버와 스카이에 실례같았던 수준이었거든요. 그리고 스카이와 달리 아이리버의 경우, 일본, 북미, 중국, 유럽 등에서도 활발하게 진출한 것으로 보여지는데요. 제 기억으로는 좀 허접하다 싶은 상품들을 내놓으면서 망해갔던 것으로 기억합니다. 아이리버의 경우 E100은 그냥 대량 생산한 증정품처럼 느껴졌습니다. 스카이는 베가 이전 제품과 베가 첫 제품 까지도 괜찮았다고 생각하지만, 베가 이후 제품들이 네이밍이나 컨셉이 누구한테 팔려고하는 건가?싶었습니다. 애플이 중요하게 생각하는 전략과 달리 너무 잡다한 라인업이 많아, 정말 집중해야 할 플래그십과 신사업을 잊었기 때문일까요? 당시 아이리버와 스카이의 전성기를 만들었던 사람들은 대체 왜 이후의 시대에는 몰락했을까요? 생각해보면 오늘날 2021년의 수많은 테크 기업들과 그와 유사한 기업들은 한 순간에 아이리버와 스카이 같은 길을 가게 될 수 있다는 생각이 듭니다. 그리고 이 두 기업의 한창 때와 한창 때 이후의 지지부진하다고 생각되는 모습이 어쩐지 겹쳐지거든요. 일본의 10대들은 소니를 잘 모른다던데, 한국의 10대들이 삼성과 애플 등을 모르게되는 날이 온다는 게 상상이 잘 안되네요. 그리고 너무 멀리 본 미래일 수도 있지만, 지금의 논리적으로 설명할 수 없는 테크주들은 분명 폭락하기 시작하면 닷컴버블은 비교할 수 없을 정도의 더 거대한 역사를 만들 것이라는 생각이 들거든요.
