출처 : https://www.munkdebates.com/debates/progress 하늘밑푸른초원님 덕분에 들여다보게 되었습니다. 2015년 11월에 캐나다에서 Munk Debates라는 단체를 통해 이루어진 토론얘기예요. 사회자가 3000명의 관중에게 선질문을 던집니다. 인류최고의 날이 도래할 것이라고 생각하느냐. 71%가 그렇다, 29% 아니다라고 대답해요. 토론이 끝나고나서 같은 질문을 던져 누가 선전했는지를 판단하는 형식이에요. 낙관론자는 스티븐 핀커(하버드교수, 뇌과학자, 심리학자), 맷 리들리(과학저널리스트)이고 비관론자는 알랭 드 보통(철학가, 작가), 말콤 글래드웰(작가)입니다. 스티븐이 먼저 시작합니다. 아래 댓글 조금 수정해서 가져올게요. [미래가 밝아보인다고 주장하는 스티븐 핑커의 근거] : 언론을 통해 바라보는 세계는 어둡습니다. 그건 언론이 비행기사고가 날 때는 앞다투어 보도를 하지만 비행기가 이륙하는 것을 보도하는 언론은 없기 때문입니다. 우리의 미래를 제대로 보려면 데이타를 보아야 합니다. 열 가지 정도 들 수 있습니다. 1.150여년 전에는 인간의 평균수명이 30년이었지만(영아사망률이 높아 그렇다고는 하지요) 현재는 70년입니다. 2.천연두는 현재 멸종되었습니다. 앞으로 더 많은 질병이 자취를 감출 것입니다. 3.200여년 전 전 세계 85%가 절대빈곤층이었습니다. 지금은 10%에 불과하고 2030년 경에는 0%에 수렴할 것이라고 합니다. 4.전쟁도 줄어들고 있습니다. 선진국이 전쟁을 하지 않은지는 70년이고 강대국들이 전쟁을 멈춘지는 60년, 내란이나 내전은 여전히 존재하지만 옛날보다 덜 파괴적이고 숫자상으로도 적습니다. 전쟁으로 인한 연간사망자는, 세계 2차 대전 당시 십만명 당 300명, 1950년대에는 22명, 1980년대에는 5명으로 꾸준히 줄었고 현재는 0.2명, 시리아조차도 요즘에 들어서 2000년대 수준으로 상승했을 뿐입니다. 5.폭력성도 전세계적으로 감소를 보이고 있어서 지난 30년간 수치를 보면 살인률이 절반으로 줄었다고 합니다. 6.민주주의지수에 의하면 세계 인구의 60%가 개방적인 사회에서 살고 있습니다. 지금껏 가장 높은 수치입니다. 7.지식입니다. 1817년에는 17%의 사람들만이 기본적인 교육을 받았지만 현재는 80%에 이르며 비율은 급속도로 상승하고 있습니다. 8.인권입니다. 세계의 많은 나라들이 아동노동, 사형, 인신매매, 여성에 대한 폭력, 할례, 동성애자차별, 또는 그 이외의 비인간적인 행위에 대한 담론에 주목하고 있습니다. 9.성평등입니다. 세계적으로 여성은 더 많은 교육을 받고 결혼시기가 늦어지고 있으며 경제적으로 윤택해지고 더 많은 파워와 영향력을 발휘하고 있습니다. 10.마지막으로 지능입니다. 모든 나라의 지능지수가 10년마다 3포인트씩 증가하고 있습니다. 위에서 언급된 명제들은 착실하게 향상되고 있고 기술은 역동적으로 발전하고 있습니다. 유전학, 뇌과학, 인공지능은 진보하고 있고 데이타를 근거로 하는 합리적인 정책구현이 실현되고 있죠. 기술진보로 인한 디스토피아는 공상과학에나 나올 법한 이야기들이고 몇몇은 해결이 가능하기도 합니다. 핵무기에 대한 공포가 대단하다지만 일본 나가사키 이후 한 번도 전쟁에 이용된 적이 없으며 이란을 포함한 16개 나라가 핵무기개발중단을 선언했고 핵무기는 80%이상 감소했습니다.(오잉? 그렇군요..) 기후변화가 인류진보에 있어 중요한 변수로 작용할 수 있겠지만 많은 경제학자들은 갖가지 정책으로 해결가능한 문제라고 말합니다. 그리고 문제에 대한 인식이 상당히 퍼져서 미국의 기후변화부정은 역대 최하입니다. [낙관론자들에 대한 우려 : 알랭 드 보통] : 낙관론자들에 의하면 인간은 네 가지에 대해서 커다란 승리를 이룰 것이라고 합니다. 지식, 빈곤타파, 전쟁과 질병의 종식. 그런데 저의 반박은 이래요. 저는 스위스사람입니다. 스위스는 네 가지 문제들을 다 해결했죠. 스위스는 환상적인 교육, 의료시스템을 자랑하고 소득도 엄청납니다. 그치만 여전히 스위스는 천국이 아닙니다. 제 1세계국가문제라고 할 수 있는데 스위스가 가진 문제 때문에라도 우리는 미래를 마냥 낙관할 수만은 없습니다. 스위스는 왜 완벽하지 않은가? 왜냐면 멍청함은 이성으로 없앨 수가 없기 때문입니다. 계몽주의에 의하면 인간에게 옮고 그름을 가르치면 그대로 따른다고 하지만 우리의 무지는 그보다 질깁니다. GDP가 상승한다고 해서 빈곤문제가 해결되지는 않습니다. 인간탐욕의 풍경은 피없는 전쟁을 방불케 합니다. 훌륭한 치료제가 있음에도 불구하고 스위스사람들은 여전히 질병으로 죽습니다. 기술의 발전으로 불멸의 수퍼지능이 탄생한다고 해도 그것은 인간이 아닐 것이고 우리 인간은 앞서 제가 말한 모든 사라지지 않는 문제에 결박당해 살 수밖에 없습니다. 마냥 낙관하는 것, 완벽주의는 실수를 저지르고 흠이 있으나 서로 용서해주고 보듬어 줌으로써 문제를 극복하는 인간에게 있어서 어쩌면 위험한 사고일지도 모릅니다. 자신이 완벽하다고 생각하고 완벽한 배우자를 찾아다니는 사람을 생각해 보십시요. 그건 인간적이지 않습니다. 우리가 왜 꽃을 좋아합니까. 아름다움을 뽐내다가도 실망스운 몰골로 시들어버리기 때문입니다. 완벽함에 열광하는 이유는 불안전한 존재임을 알기 때문일 겁니다. 인간이 완벽할 수 있음을 믿는 이들만큼 우리에게 위협이 되는 이는 없습니다. 우리가 모든 문제를 해결할 수 있다고 믿는 과학자나 정치인들이야말로 위험한 이들입니다. 진정한 인류진보를 꾀하는 이들은 겸손하고 자신이 겸손한만큼 타인의 결점을 이해할 줄도 아는 이들일 겁니다. 우리 인간이 얼마나 나약한 존재인지를 아는 것은 매우 중요합니다. 이 자리에 많은 과학자들이 계시지만 우리가 정말 논의해야 할 것은 지혜이며 어떤 철학을 가져야할 것이냐입니다. [낙관론자 맷 리들리의 논거] : 대머리 영국인과 꼬부랑머리 캐나다인 중 누가 더 좋냐는 설문조사가 없는 건 유감입니다 ㅋㅋ. 제가 어렸을 적엔 미래가 정말 암울해 보였었습니다. 인구는 폭발한다 그러지 기아가 만연해 있지 농약은 암을 유발시키지 사막은 점점 황폐화되고 석유는 고갈되고 우림지역은 사라지고 산성비 내리지 오존층은 악화되지 핵전쟁 나서 내 정자가 힘을 잃고 말 것 같았죠. 십년, 이십 년이 지나고 나면 대부분의 공포가 틀렸고 과장이었다는 것을 알게 됩니다. 세상은 어른들이 말하는만큼이나 나쁘지 않았습니다. 오히려 점점 더 좋아졌죠. 지난 50년간 인간수명은 매일 5시간씩 늘어났습니다. 우리의 가장 큰 불행이었던 영유아사망률은 2/3가 줄었고 말라리아사망률은 지난 15년간 60% 줄어들었어요. 기름유출사건 같은 건 대단히 큰 문제도 아닙니다. 교통체증, 비만 같은 경우 풍요로움에 수반되는 문제이죠. 많은 발전은 천천히 조금씩 일어납니다. 그러나 갑자기 일어나는 사건들은 뉴스가 되죠. 자동차 사고는 뉴스가 돼도 영아사망률감소는 뉴스거리가 되지 못합니다. 스티븐이 말한대로 우리는 점점 더 스마트해지고 깨끗해지고 평화로와지고 부유해지고 자유로와지고 더 평등해지고 있습니다. 평등해지고 있다고요? 네. 전세계 빈부격차는 줄고 있어요. 왜냐면 가난한 나라의 빈곤층은 잘 사는 나라의 빈곤층보다 빠르게 나아지고 있기 때문입니다. 아프리카는 마치 수 십년 전의 아시아처럼 요즘 엄청난 경제기적을 이루고 있습니다. 모잠비크는 현재 2008년보다 60% 더 잘 삽니다. 에티오피아는 매해 10% 경제성장률을 보이고 있고 선진국들의 성장률이 살짝 후퇴했다고는 하지만 우리는 급속히 번영하고 있습니다. 그치만 저의 미래에 관한 낙관론은 이런 옛날 자료에 기초한 것이 아닙니다. 왜 이런 이노베이션이 일어나고 있냐가 근거입니다. 우리가 머리를 맞대 새로운 아이디어를 만들어 내는 노력들이 발전의 원동력이고 우리는 이런 아이디어의 세계에 이제 막 발을 내딛였을 뿐입니다. 우리는 더 이상 북미나 유럽에 의존할 필요도 없습니다. 인터넷은 사람들 사이의 소통을 원활하게 하고 수많은 아이디어를 양산해 냅니다. 우리나라에선 사백만명의 사람들이 전자담배 덕분에 금연을 할 수 있었습니다. 금연에 가장 효과적인 방법이고 커피만큼이나 안전합니다. 중국인이 발명했죠. 진보는 환경파괴를 수반하지 않느냐고 반문하시겠죠? 아닙니다. 환경주의자들에 의하면 많은 나라들이 환경적으로 개선되었다고 합니다. 수풀도 많아지고 야생동물도 많아지고 물과 공기도 더 깨끗해졌습니다. 동물멸종비율도 100년 전에 비해 줄어들었습니다. 환경주의자들 덕분이죠. 부유한 나라일수록 환경이 개선되고 있습니다. 심각한 환경문제는 가난한 나라에서 일어나고 있습니다. 인구는 어떻습니까? 제가 살아온 동안 인가증가율이 2%에서 1%로 줄었고 현재 아프리카의 출생률은 급격히 떨어지고 있습니다. 세계인구는 20세기에 4배로 불었지만 21세기에는 두 배가 안될 것이며(에잉.... 이건 좀.. 70억의 두 배는 140억인뎅..) 유엔은 2080년 경엔 더 이상 인구가 늘어나지 않을 것으로 내다보고 있습니다. 인구통계란 게 참 재미있어요. 영유아사망률이 적을수록 사람들은 작은 가족을 계획하고 인구증가율은 줄어들고 농업생산량은 점점 더 좋아지고 있습니다. 요즘엔 옛날보다 68% 적어진 경작지로도 50년 전에 먹던 양만큼 생산하는 것이 가능합니다. 자연을 더 보호하게 되죠. 온타리오 주 만한 땅에 수경재배를 하면 나머지 땅을 야생동물에게 양보해도 좋을 지경입니다. 지구는 더욱 푸르러지고 있습니다. 인공위성이 보고한 바에 의하면 현재의 지구는 30년 전보다 14% 더 푸르러졌습니다. 특히 아프리카지역에서요. 지금까진 ‘좋군’하고 들으셨겠지만 토론 중에 분명 터닝 포인트 얘기가 나올 겁니다. 사람들은 그럽니다. 우리 세대는 부모세대보다 더 힘겹게 살고 일찍 죽거나 급작스런 환경파괴를 경험할 것이라고요. 제가 터닝포인트가 뭔지 알려드리지요. 모~~든 세대는 원래 터닝포인트가 있다고 합니다. 옛날이 좋았지 미래는 암울해 모두들 이럽니다. 인간은 과거는 행복한 기억들로 미래는 암울한 진단으로 필터링을 합니다. 이것은, 우리 세대는 분명 터닝포인트를 겪는 특별한 세대라고 믿는 희한한 나르시시즘입니다. 제가 보기엔 넌센스예요. [말콤 글래드웰의 낙관부정론] : 두 분에게 이름을 지어드리자면 Mr. and Mrs. Pollyanna가 좋을 것 같아요(동화책 여주이름인데 아주 낙천적인 소녀라고 하네요 ㅋ). 이상하게 여기 여자가 없어서리...2015년인데... 누가 Mr. 이고 누가 Mrs.인지는 여러분의 상상에 맡기겠지만 대충 머리만 봐도 누가 누군지 알겠네요 ㅋ. 말씀하신 거 전부 동감합니다. 두 분의 관점에선 절대적으로 옳죠. 리들리씨는 영국 상원에 속하신 분이고 핀커씨는 영국 상원과 죽이 잘 맞는다는 하버드에 계신 분이지 않습니까. 두 분 앞에 최고의 나날이 펼쳐져 있으리란 걸 의심하는 분은 안 계실 거예요. 캐나다에도 최고의 앞날이 열려 있습니다. 지도자자리에 엄청난 업그레이드가 있지 않았습니까. 유감스럽게도 우리 모두 캐나다 사는 것은 아니지요. 저는 미국에 살고요. 방금 미공화당대통령후보들의 토론을 지켜보셨지만 남미사람들에게 그건 사실이 아닙니다. 우리가 역사적으로 진보했다는 건 물론 사실입니다. 두 분이 들려주신 모든 말씀들은 틀린 데가 한 군데도 없죠. 지금까지는 분명 진보해 왔습니다. 그러나 우리는 과거를 논하자는 것이 아닙니다. 미래에 관해 이야기 중입니다. 미래가 마냥 좋을 것이라고 낙관하는 건 나이브합니다. 우리는 '지금과 다른' 미래에 직면하게 될 것입니다. 최근에 IT보안업계에 있는 사람들과 이야기를 나눈 적이 있는데 요즘 걱정되는 게 뭐냐 물었더니 불가리아의 한 틴해커가 전 세계인들의 크레딧카드를 도용해서 사용하고 있다고 그게 골치라고 합니다. 참 무서운 게 어떤 개인이나 국가가 북미 전기시스템을 해킹해서 일주일 간 전기가 끊기는 걸 상상해 보세요. 누군가가 401번 도로의 수많은 차량시스템을 해킹해서 교통대란을 일으킨다고 상상해 보세요. 예를 들라면 엄청 많아요. 최근에 과학저널을 읽었는데 아프리카에서 셀폰을 가지고 과거에는 절대 해보지 못했던 벼라별짓을 다한다고 하더군요. 아프리카의 테러단체인 보코 하람과 같은 무장단체에는 더 없이 유용한 디바이스이죠. 물론 많은 질병이 치료되고 있고 기근도 사라지고 있지만 사람들이 두려워하는 건 이런 문제가 아닙니다. 문제는 기후변화예요. 멕시코에 사상최대의 허리케인이 들이닥쳤는데 이와 같은 재앙이 바로 우리의 문제입니다. 무서운 엔진을 단 인간활동이 가뭄에 강한 농작물을 생산가능케도 하지만 기후변화라는 완전히 새로운 레벨의 재앙을 불러일으키기도 합니다. 위험은 줄어들고 있는 것이 아니라 구조가 바뀌고 있는 것입니다. 폴리아나부부의 말씀은 더 이상 정확할 수 없을 정도로 진실되고 맞는 말씀이지만 그건 결국 반쪽 이야기에 불과합니다. 우리가 토론해야 할 것은 바로 위험의 본질이 어떻게 바뀌었냐는 것입니다. * * * 이제 반박할 시간이에요. 스티븐의 차례입니다.
