(중략) 나는 사람들이 인문학의 위기를 한탄할 때마다 내가 가르쳤던 야간학교 학생들을 생각한다. 인문학의 위기는 인기 있는 주제다. 이런 기사들은 항상 위기가 대학에서 일어나고 있으며 대학 캠퍼스 안에서만 해결될 수 있다고 가정한다. 인문학의 미래에 대해 비관론자들과 의견이 다른 사람들조차도 동일한 가정을 공유한다. 인문학을 변호하는 이들도 늘 교실에서 일어나는 일들을 지적한다. 나도 한때는 비슷한 생각을 했다. 더는 아니다. 오늘날의 상황은 사람들이 과도하게 합리주의와 알고리즘적 사고를 추구하는 데 반발했던 19세기의 위기와 놀랍도록 유사하다. 당시는 경제적 최적화를 위한 열망이 사람들을 공장과 '검은 악마의 공장'으로 몰아넣던 산업혁명의 시대였다. 반란은 격렬했다. 하지만 대학에서는 일어나지 않았다. 그것은 사회 전체에서 일어났다. 이는 이성의 시대에 종지부를 찍고, 창의성, 예술, 음악, 시를 찬양하고 인간의 존엄성을 중히 여기는 낭만주의의 부상을 의미했다. 그 후 100년 동안 창의성은 합리성보다 더 존경받았다. 예술가는 은행가보다 더 존경받았다. 문화는 상업보다 더 근본적인 것으로 여겨졌다. 이는 단지 시인과 음악가에 국한된 일이 아니었다. 아동노동과 다른 착취적 관행을 제한하는 법률도 통과됐다. (오늘날 착취적 IT기술로 가장 많은 피해를 입고 있는 건 어린이들이지만 아직 이를 규제하는 법은 없다.) 노동운동과 다른 인문학적 프로젝트들도 힘을 얻었다. 여느 때와는 달리 사람이 먼저인 시대였다. 이성의 시대를 이끌었던 전문가와 산업가들은 충격을 받았다. 그들이 예상하지 못한 상황이었다. 하지만 그들이 바로 인문학 부흥의 실제 원인이었다. 그들은 사람들이 자신들이 하라는 대로 순순히 따르리라 생각했다. 인간을 끝없이 조작하고 통제하는 게 가능하다고 생각했다. 수익이 최대화되기만 하면 얼마나 큰 고통이 가해지는지는 신경 쓰지 않았다. 하지만 인간은 저항했다. 그들은 반문화counterculture를 번성시켰고 결국 그 반문화는 주류가 됐다. 이 중에서 대학에서 일어난 것은 거의 없다. 위기와 해결책 모두가 사회 전반에서 일어났다. 학자들은 아마도 가장 늦게 알아차렸을 것이다. 그들은 보통 그렇다. 오늘날 우리에게도 비슷한 것이 필요하다. (중략) 그래서 나는 인문학의 위기가 대학 교실 안에서 해결할 수 있는 것이라고 가정하는 몽상가들을 보면 참을 수 없다. 인문학을 좀 더 '엔터테인먼트'로 만든다거나 현실에 좀 더 유용하게 만든다거나 하는 프로젝트들에 대해 학생들은 이미 자신들이 어떻게 생각하는지 말해왔다. 그들은 그런 말에 속지 않는다. 인문학 관련 전공의 수가 줄어드는 추세가 인문학을 사랑하는 (나같은) 사람들에게 걱정거리라는 걸 부인하진 않는다. 그러나 나는 18살 학생에게 전공으로 영문학을 선택하도록 설득하는 것이 인문학 성공의 기준이라는 생각에 동의하지 않는다. 이는 외려 인문학 전체를 조롱하는 일이다. 젊은이들이 언젠가는 인문학이 공부할 가치가 있다고 결정할 수도 있다. 하지만 그것은 인문학적 사고가 우리 사회에 스며들기 시작한 후의 일이 될 것이다. 아카데미아 바깥에서 인문학이 번창할 수 있을지에 대해 회의적인가? 이것이 가능할까 의심스러운가? 사실은 이미 일어나고 있는 현상이다. 나에게는 내부자 정보도 있다. 내 형 데이나1는 수십 년 동안 지역사회에 인문학을 전파하는 일을 해왔다. 그가 캘리포니아 계관시인이었을 때 그는 캘리포니아 곳곳을 돌아다녔는데 캘리포니아에 있는 58개 카운티 전부의 현장 프로젝트에 참석했다. 그전까지는 아무도 그렇게 하지 않았다. 하지만 데이나는 늘 그렇게 활동하곤 했다. 그는 내가 아는 누구보다도 대학 밖에서의 인문학에 대해 많은 걸 직접 경험했다. 도서관, 지역 극장, 커뮤니티 센터, 워크숍, 교회, 독서 그룹, 기업 및 기타 현실 세계 환경에서 사람들과 직접 대면했다. 그는 사람들이 알고리즘과 기기가 제공하지 못하는 지혜와 영양을 갈망하고 있다고 한다. 그러나 인문학은 이를 제공할 수 있다. 이것이야말로 진정한 인문학의 위기이며, 이제 끓는점에 도달했다. 나는 데이나만큼 많은 곳을 돌아다니진 않지만 사람들과 온라인에서 교류하면서 똑같은 이야기를 듣는다. 사람들은 IT기술이 제공할 수 없는 것을 원한다. 테크 업계가 제공하는 기기가 인간을 조종하기 위해 제 구실을 못할 정도로 엉망이 될수록 인문학적 대안에 대한 갈망은 높아질 뿐이다. 결국 대학 관리자들도 이를 알아차릴 것이다. 그리고—이 다음 부분은 충격적이니 자리에 앉아서 읽길 권한다!—학생들(그리고 부모들)은 변화가 마침내 올 때 이를 받아들일 것이다. 100년 전 미국으로 이민 온 사람들이 자녀들에게 더 나은 교육을 제공하기 위해 아끼고 저축했던 것을 생각해보라. 그리고 '리버럴아츠liberal arts'는 교육에 필수적인 것으로 여겨졌다. 물론 대학에서도 기술적인 걸 배울 수 있지만 인문학적 학습이 제공하는 엄숙함과 더 넓은 관점 없이는 자신의 모든 능력을 진정으로 계발할 수 없었다(인문학의 일부로 가르쳤던 생각하기, 쓰기, 의사소통 기술도 마찬가지다). 그런 인문학적 학습에 대한 존중은 다시 돌아올 것이다. 하지만 인문학이 세상에서 그 저력과 가치를 입증한 후에만 돌아올 것이다. 지금이 바로 그 순간이다. 여러 생각이 드게 하는 글 소개해주셔서 감사합니다.
인문학, 그리고 인문학 전공자가 대학이라는 (첨단) 지식생산기지에만 갇혀 있지 말고, 인문학을 수요하는 사람들이 있는 "사회"로 진출하고 그들 사이로 스며들 필요가 있으며, 나아가 어쩌면 그럼으로써도 인문학 지식의 발전과 번영이 가능하다는 주장에 동의합니다.
곧 인문학 박사과정을 시작할 저도 (아직 논문을 출판해본 적은 없지만) 학자들끼리 논문을 통해 그들만의 리그에서 치열하게 토론하고 끝나면, 이게 사회에 무슨 쓸모가 있을까 자주 생각합니다.

저자가 말한대로 IT 독재(?)에 대한 반발로 인문학 정신이 다시 각광받을 수도 있겠지만, 그렇다고 해서 전문 인문학자를 길러내는 대학원 교육, 심지어는 인문학 학부 교육에 더 체계적이고 장기적인 투자가 꼭 이뤄지진 않을 수도 있을 것 같습니다. 어쩌면 한국에서 있었던 힐링, 웰빙 유행처럼 인문학을 통한 "IT 디톡스" 정도의 인문학 유행 정도만 있을지도 모르죠. 그런 소비를 위해 성장하고 길러지는 인문학자와 인문학 지식이, IT/AI 기술처럼 사회적 효용이 크면서도 이론적으로 첨단을 다릴 수 있을지는 회의적입니다.
물론 그럼에도, 다른 학문과 기술처럼 인문학이 사람들에게 어떤 실질적 효용을 가져다 줄 수 있을지, 어떻게 사회에 긍정적이면서도 구체적인 영향을 미칠 수 있을지 "산업적"인 고민을 해야 한다는 데에는 깊이 동의합니다.
