https://n.news.naver.com/article/469/0000763522?sid=104 미국 의회 234년 역사상 처음으로 하원의장직에서 해임되는 굴욕의 주인공이 된 케빈 매카시 전 의장은 애초부터 의회 내에서 환영받지 못했다. 같은 당인 공화당 내 강경파는 올해 1월 의장 취임 때부터 ‘지나치게 타협적’이라는 이유로 틈만 나면 그를 축출하려 기회를 노렸다. 여당인 민주당도 공화당 하원 지도부가 도널드 트럼프 전 대통령이 주창하는 ‘마가(MAGA·미국을 다시 위대하게)’ 극단주의를 벗지 못했다며 그를 비판해 왔다. 3일(현지시간) 양쪽은 모두 궁지에 몰린 그를 외면했고, 연방하원의 ‘의장 해임 가결’은 그 결과였다. 2002년 캘리포니아 주의회 의원에 당선된 매카시 전 하원의장은 2006년 자신이 15년 동안 보좌한 빌 토머스 의원 은퇴로 공석이 된 캘리포니아 22선거구 하원의원에 출마해 9선 고지에 올랐다. 2014년 하원 진출 8년 만에 원내대표로 선출되며 각광받기 시작했다. 2018년 다시 원내대표로 뽑혀 지난해 공화당의 중간선거 승리에 기여했다. 한때 ‘호위무사’ 소리를 들을 정도로 2016년 공화당 대선 후보 경선 당시부터 트럼프 전 대통령과 가까이 지냈지만, 캐릭터는 달랐다. 연초 하원의장 선거 당시 트럼프 전 대통령이 지지했는데도 당내 강경파들 반대로 15차례 투표 끝에 간신히 의장직에 앉았던 건 이런 이유가 컸다. 강경파를 회유하려 의원 각자에게 해임 결의안 제출 권한을 부여했고, 그 때문에 임기 내내 그들 눈치를 봐야 했다. -------- 매카시 의장은 최소한 넘지 말아야할 선은 넘지 않고 타협점을 찾으려 했던 정치인으로 보이는데 어찌보면 안타까운 일인지도 모르겠습니다. 하원 다수당은 공화당이 221석이고 공화당 의원 대다수(210명 반대·3명 불참)가 해임에 반대했지만 당내 강경파 8명이 민주당(208명 찬성·4명 불참)과 함께 해임 찬성표를 던지며 해임이 확정됐어요. 소수 강경파에 결정권이 넘어간 꼴인데 아마도 민주당이 똥볼을 찬것으로 보입니다.
