데빈 타운센드를 대체 어떻게 정의해야할까요? 불세출의 기타 신동, 스티브 바이의 제자, 스트래핑 영 래드 이후 수 많은 프로젝트들을 성공시켜온 천재 싱어송 라이터, 조 새트리아니의 뒤를 이을 기타 치는 데빈은 약관의 나이로 스티브 바이의 총애를 받으며 밴드에 참여 한 이후 본인의 첫 밴드 스트래핑 영 래드를 만들어 독립해나갑니다. 여기서 충격적이였던 것은 기타 실력뿐만 아니라 클린과 그로울링을 자유롭게 구사하는 극강의 보컬 능력까지 갖췄었단거였어요. 거기에 더해 인더스트리얼 메탈을 기반으로 온갖 장르를 혼합한 고유의 스타일을 그때부터 보여주고 그걸 계속 해서 발전시키기 나가기까지! 이후에는 SYL등 중복되던 자신의 밴드들을 접고 데빈 타운센드 프로젝트로만 앨범을 발표하고있습니다. 데빈의 음악을 처음 들었던 것은 컨셉 앨범인 Ziltoid the Omniscient였는데 커피를 찾기 위해 지구를 침공한 외계인과 캡틴 스펙타큘러의 이야기를 담은 이 앨범은 그야말로 충격이였어요. 악기들을 질주시키며 만들어낸 빡세고 장엄한 멜로디 속에서도 끊임없이 존재감을 발산하는 코믹함이 즐거웠고 세상에 이런 앨범을 어떻게 만들어냈을까 싶었죠. 이후 그의 이전 앨범 그리고 이후 앨범들까지 섭렵하며 완전히 팬이 되었다지요. 그리고 작년에 나온 Z2앨범은 Ziltoid the Omniscient의 후속격인 작품입니다. 개인적으로 가장 좋아하는 앨범인 Deconstruction 이후 나온 Epicloud부터는 이전까지의 과격한 분위기를 조금씩 지양하며 밝은 팝적인 모습을 더 보여주고있는데 이 앨범은 그런 시도들의 연장선상으로 봐도 무방합니다. 사실 이런 분위기는 Ocean Machine - Biomech와 같은 초창기 작품들에서도 보이는만큼 아주 색다른 건 아니지만요. 앨범은 더블 앨범으로 구성되어 긴 러닝타임을 자랑하지만 완급 조절을 잘해 피곤함이나 지루함과는 거리가 멉니다. 뒷 앨범의 앞 앨범에 비해 부족하다는 생각은 들지만 크게 뒤쳐지진 않아요. 다만 한가지 아쉬웠던 점은 Ziltoid the Omniscient에서 보여줬던 그 코믹함이 많이 사라져있단거네요. 특히 뒷 앨범에서 가장 기대한 부분이였는데 이 점에선 많이 기대에 못미쳤습니다. 하지만 나쁘진 않았어요. 이 대머리 괴수가 앞으로는 또 어떤 음악을 내놓을지 기대가 큽니다. 더불어 내한 공연도 언젠가 다시 오지않을까 기대도 해보지만...뭐 안오겠죠?;;; p.s 명색이 메탈팬인데 프렌테!나 처치스 노래만 올린게 맘에 걸려 하나 올립니다. 글마저도 귀찮아서 최근 쓴 간단리뷰를 가져오는 걸로...ㅠㅠ  추천수: 3 Warning: Use of undefined constant no - assumed 'no' (this will throw an Error in a future version of PHP) in /home/redtea/html/a_skin/video/view.php on line 154 |
