전 1편이었던 에너미 언노운과 에너미 위드인을 모두 플레이해봤고, 전작의 인기 모드였던 롱 워도 플레이해봤습니다. 리메이크 전의 엑스컴으로부터 영향을 받은 비슷한 작품들도 꽤 즐겨본 편이었습니다. 그러니 제 평가의 기준은 전작보다 얼마나 나아졌는가, 특히 롱 워 모드보다 더 괜찮은 후속작이 되었는가에 집중해서 이야기해볼까 합니다. 모드가 만능은 아니라고 생각하지만, 본편보다 모드가 훨씬 나은 대표적인 게임이 엑스컴이었거든요. 첫 인상은 꽤 좋았습니다. 얼핏 플레이해봐도 무기 개조, 다양한 대원들의 커스터마이징, 매력적으로 디자인된 새로운 외계인들 같은 변화는 이 작품을 흥미롭게 만들었습니다. 스토리텔링에 있어서도 1편에 비하면 다채롭고 이해하기 쉬운 편이었습니다. 그런데 튜토리얼이라 할만한 구간을 넘기고 게임의 엔딩을 볼 때까지 쭉 플레이하면 정말 후속작다운 볼륨인지에 대해서 의심하게 되더군요. 거치형 콘솔로 출시하면서 상당히 간략화되었던 1편과 비교해도, 2편은 PC로 출시한 후속작인데도 전작에서 계승하지 못한 것들이 상당히 많습니다. 대표적으로 전투기 운영 및 UFO 요격, 간단한 퍼즐이었던 건축, 무인 드론을 지상군에 운용한다거나, 확장팩에서 선보인 MEC 강화병이나 EXALT 같은 제3세력이 모두 사라졌습니다. 배경이 달라진 후속작이라도 얼마든지 만들어낼 수 있는 것들을 무작정 없애고 단순화시켰어요. 개발진 스스로 감명 받았다던 롱 워 모드의 장점도 제대로 계승하지 않았습니다. 새로운 공용 무장 추가나 더 세분화되고 다양해진 병과는 도입되지 않았습니다. 그저 롱 워 개발자들이 발매 당일부터 모드로 '따로' 제공했죠. 기관단총 추가나 장교 시스템이 그리 만들기 어려운 요소인가요? 물론 출시일부터 좋은 완성도의 모드가 제공될 수 있는 환경을 마련한 건 장점이고, 개발진이 추구한 좋은 방향이라 생각합니다. 그런데 모드 개발자들에게 재미있는 모드를 만들어달라고 모드 툴만 만들어주면 게임의 완성도가 올라가는 건 아니거든요. 또 플레이하면서 게임 템포 조절에 상당히 실패했다고 생각합니다. 초반의 아둥바둥하는 재미가 금방 희석되고, 중반부터 숨 찰 정도로 진행이 빠릅니다. 고 난이도를 플레이하면서 꽤 어렵다고 생각했습니다만, 그걸 떠나서 1회차 플레이부터 이것 저것 건드려볼 여유가 안 생겨서 중반에 난이도를 낮추고 새로 시작해야 했습니다. 기승전결에서 기에서 결로 바로 넘어가는 게임 같아요. 전투에 있어서도 마찬가지인데, 물론 턴제 게임에서 무작정 지루한 턴 넘기기가 미덕은 아닙니다. 전작은 고 난이도를 돌파하는 방법이 무작정 경계로 참호전으로 일관하는 전술이었고, 이러한 턴 제한은 꽤 좋은 해결책이죠. 그런데 상당수의 작전에서 무작정 전진하면 전멸 혹은 큰 피해를 감수해야 하는 적은 잔뜩 만들어두고 턴 제한만 더 심하게 걸었습니다. 이러니 사람에 따라선 조금만 플레이해도 지치고 피로한 전투가 되어버리죠. 또한 최적화 문제를 거론하지 않을 수 없습니다. 이렇게 내놓으면 안 될 수준이에요. 요구되는 사양도 그래픽 퍼포먼스에 비하면 터무니 없이 높습니다. 보통 제가 고르는 1080p 해상도에서 프레임 드랍이 나올 정도로 형편 없습니다. 권장 사양 이상의 PC에서 해상도 빼고 다른 옵션을 모두 조절하는 데에도 문제가 있다면 꽤 심각하죠. 거기다가 버그는 분당 1회라고 칭해도 될 만큼 많고 광범위합니다. 그냥 웃고 넘어갈 버그는 유머로 넘기면 그만이겠지만, 게임을 새로 불러와야 해결되는 버그들도 장난 아니게 많습니다. 심지어 불러와도 해결이 안 되는 버그들도 있어요. 아예 재실행해야 하는 버그도 있더군요. 참고로 2편은 올해까지 발매일을 연기해서 더 시간이 주어진 작품이었는데도 이 지경입니다. UI도 문명5 초창기 시절처럼 최악입니다. 다른 장면으로 넘어가기 위해서 필요도 없는 화면을 여러 번 지나쳐야 되요. 반복 플레이를 추구하는 게임이 등장 인물들의 대화가 생략되지도 않아서 매번 똑같은 말을 들어야 하고, 어떨 때에는 턴마다 시간을 잡아먹습니다. 중요한 컷신 같은 건 1회차부터 생략이 가능한 걸 고려하면 바보 같은 구성이죠. 무엇보다 1편과 달리 2편은 패드 지원은 예정되어 있어도, 기본적으로 마우스와 키보드에 중점을 둔 PC판 전용 게임입니다. 고 해상도에서 폰트나 아이콘 크기부터 작아서 보기 불편한 점도 그냥 완성도가 떨어지는거죠. 또한 아주 대놓고 확장팩 혹은 후속작을 예고하는 결말은 너무 노골적이라서 우스울 정도에요. 심지어 제대로 된 복선도 없이 그냥 막 튀어나온거라서 리메이크 전의 구 엑스컴을 즐겨본 유저가 아니라면 이해조차 되지 않을 겁니다. 아까 말한 전작보다 나아진 스토리텔링이 이거 하나로 몽땅 날라가는 것만 같아요. 여담으로 한국어판 번역도 문명 비욘드 어스와 라이징 타이드, 그 이전에 문명5부터 거슬러 올라가는 오역의 역사를 되풀이하고 있습니다. 엑스컴 1편만 해도 훨씬 괜찮았는데 대사가 있는 인물 수부터가 다섯 손가락 안에 드는 게임이 이렇게 오역이 난무하는 건 문제가 좀 크죠. 그러나 기준을 조금만 낮춰서 1편보다 더 나은 게임인가에 대해서 이야기하면 전 그렇다고 봅니다. 없어진 것들도 많지만, 그만큼 새로 생긴 것들도 많거든요. 또 게임을 엉망으로 만들지도 모르는 밸런싱도 중요하게 보는 편인데, 1편에 비해선 더 나은 편입니다. 그것만으로도 더 몰입해서 플레이할 수 있었으니까요. 만일 앞으로 괜찮은 모드, 특히 롱 워 정도 되는 대형 모드가 등장할 수만 있다면 더욱 평가가 올라갈 수 있을 겁니다. 물론 그 전에 패치로 한숨 나오는 최적화와 버그 문제부터 고쳐야겠지요. 저는 문명5나 엑스컴 eu에서 그랬듯이 일부러 덜 추가한 것이라고 생각합니다
엑스컴도 ew가 포함되서 나왔으면 바로 고티급 이었을텐데 파이락시스가 수익성을 노리고 일부러 좀 뺐다고 생각해요
그래도 진짜 잘만든 후속작이라는 생각엔 변함이 없습니다 오랫만에 정말 재미있는 게임을 하네요
