저도 아주 옛날에 라그나로크를 잠시나마 재미있게 플레이했었고, 좋은 추억이라 생각합니다. 그 다음으로 IMC 게임즈의 그라나도 에스파다도 서비스 초기부터 정말 재미있게 즐긴 편이었습니다. 특히 현재까지도 그라나도 에스파다는 수많은 국산 MMORPG 중에서도 칭찬할 수 있는 게임이라 생각하고요. 그래서 트리 오브 세이비어(이하 TOS)도 도전해봤습니다. 베타 테스트는 전혀 하지 않았고, 오픈 베타 테스트가 시작된 후로 잠시 플레이해봤습니다. 그런데 너무 실망스럽네요. 몇 시간 정도를 플레이하다가 도저히 못 견디고 꺼버렸네요. 일단 전투 시스템은 매우 지루합니다. 플레이 내내 눌러야 할 키는 Z가 대부분입니다. 하단의 단축바가 그렇게 많을 필요가 있나 싶을 정도로 심도 있는 전투를 경험해본 적이 없네요. 그나마 대형 몬스터가 범위 공격을 해서 피하면서 싸우는 정도는 특색 있다고 말하기도 민망한 수준이고요. 얼마 되지도 않는 전투용 스킬들도 죄다 똑같습니다. 마치 전투는 직접 매크로만 주구장창 돌리는 느낌 밖에 주지 않습니다. X로 점프까지 가능한데, X는 언덕에서 빠르게 이동하려고 써본 것 빼고는 전투에서 써먹은 적도 없습니다. 다양한 직업군을 강조하는데, 그 직업군이 계단식 구성에 머물러 있는데다가 커스터마이징이라 부를만한 것도 없습니다. 쓸데없이 이름만 다른 직업군 수보단 더 개성 있는 스킬로 무장했으며, 플레이 스타일에 변화를 줄 수 있는 직업이 하나라도 더 있는 편이 좋았을 겁니다. 그나마 제작 시스템을 직업군에 묶어두어서 차별화하려 하는데, 그냥 제작 시스템은 별개로 구분되었어야 했다고 봅니다. MMORPG의 핵심 중 하나인 캐릭터 육성은 재앙입니다. 진입 장벽은 쓸데 없이 높고, 그렇다고 자유로운 육성은 존재할 수도 없는 좋은 예에 속합니다. 누군가는 육성 시스템은 플레이어의 간섭이 많아야 자유로워진다고들 하는데요. 말도 안 되는 소리일 뿐입니다. 플레이어가 간섭하는 부분이 많으면 그만큼 최적화된 캐릭터가 나올 뿐입니다. 특히 타인과 교류하고 경쟁하는 MMORPG에선 더욱 당연한 결과고요. 오히려 더 중요한 건 캐릭터 간의 밸런싱일 겁니다. 그런데 TOS는 자랑처럼 수없이 만든 직업군을 넣기만 했거든요. 예를 들어서 필라스 오브 이터니티란 게임에선 전사에게 지능은 기술의 범위를 올려주고, 마법사에게 힘은 마법의 피해량을 올려주기 때문에 모든 직업의 모든 능력치에 의미를 부여하도록 만들어졌습니다. 그에 비해서 TOS에선 전사에게 5가지 능력치 중에서 아예 올릴 필요가 없는 능력치가 시작부터 보입니다. 제가 짧게 플레이해서 깊게 알지 못하는건가 싶어서 홈페이지를 찾아보니 예시로 든 캐릭터 육성부터가 그렇더군요. 여기에 배분 초기화조차 지원하지 않아서 단순무식하게 결정을 바꾸려면 다른 캐릭터를 처음부터 다시 키우도록 유도하고 있습니다. 심지어 기획 의도에서도 문제가 보입니다. 오픈 월드와 자유도를 언급하며 중시한다는 게임인데, 막상 게임은 그 단어들과 전혀 관계가 없습니다. 오히려 그 반대에 가깝습니다. 비좁고 단순한 맵은 아주 선형적인 플레이를 강요하고, 자유도란건 결국 비선형적인 플레이와 다양한 경험을 필요로 하는 건데, TOS의 모든 맵에서 만나볼 수 있는 건 몬스터 사냥 밖에 없습니다. 여기에 기본적인 레벨 동선도 형편 없습니다. 플레이어에게 탐험을 즐겨보랍시고 퀘스트 표시를 가려버렸는데요. 물론 의도는 이해합니다. 그런데 그렇게 세계를 탐구하면서 퀘스트를 찾을 만큼의 몰입도 없고, 퀘스트 대부분이 조잡하고 단순한 반복 사냥 밖에 없습니다. 이러니 대부분의 유저가 퀘스트를 찾지 못하고 넘겨버리다가 레벨 동선에 불만을 품죠. 개발진은 불편한 것과 흥미를 줄 수 있는 도전을 구분할 줄을 모르나 봅니다. 후자라 하면은 펀컴의 더 시크릿 월드처럼 퀘스트를 유저가 직접 고민하면서 추리하고 탐색하는 과정이 들어가야죠. TOS처럼 온 맵을 다 찾아가면서 퀘스트 주는지 대화를 걸어봐야 하는 건 '노가다'라고 불러야 합니다. 즉 다시 말해서, 시나리오도 별거 없습니다. 기억에 남는 퀘스트와 NPC가 1명도 없습니다. 심지어 요즘 온라인 게임에서조차 모든 등장 인물에 목소리를 넣는 게 기본이 될 지경인데, TOS는 모든 대사가 무음입니다. 플레이어의 몰입도를 올릴 수 있는 대표적인 방법조차 쓰지 않았습니다. 퀘스트마저도 단순 사냥, 아이템 반납, 수집 밖에 없는데 남는 게 있을 리가 없죠. 메인 시나리오조차 기억에 남는 게 없는 주인공 용사의 모험담에서 벗어나질 않습니다. 그 주제만 10년 넘게 써본 바이오웨어만 하더라도 수많은 작품이 개성이 넘치는데요. 마지막으로 로딩 좀 하면 튕기는 불안정한 클라이언트, 세세한 옵션 조절도 없으며, 다이렉트 11은 지원조차 해주지 않는 최적화도 10년전 게임을 지금 출시한다는 생각 밖에 들지 않습니다. 그나마 미적으로 아름다운 배경과 캐릭터가 내세울 수 있는 장점이고요. 버그도 심각한데, 전 게임의 시작인 캐릭터 생성 때부터 버그를 발견했습니다. 만든 캐릭터의 성별이 바뀌어 있더군요.. 제가 길게 플레이하지 않았기 때문에, 놓친 부분이 많고 잘못 알고 있는 부분도 있을텐데요. 대충 제 생각에는 트리 오브 세이비어는 복고풍으로 옛날 인기작을 다시 불러온답시고 10년 전에도 안 먹힐 게임을 이제서야 내놓은 것처럼 보입니다. 모든 시스템이 불합리하고 낡아빠졌어요. 수많은 게임이 고전 게임의 후계자를 자처하면서도 기존 시스템을 갈아엎고, 재정립하느냐 애를 쓰는데 도대체 트리 오브 세이비어는 뭘 한건가 싶어요. 심지어 이건 유료화를 앞둔 오픈 베타 테스트인데요.
